Where the hell is my afterlife?!
SUICIDE, ALCOHOL, AND DROWNING TW. ITS SAFE TO READ AFTER THE DASH. (—)
~
You couldn't swim.
That thought hung deeply in the back of your mind as you carefully paddled out into the middle of the lake. It was midnight, full moon dangling in the sky and giving off a silvery light.
Why are you out here? In a canoe at midnight, over a freezing lake with no life jacket?
Simple. You wanted this.
You were sick and tired of the way your family treated you. Your father had died in the streets- robbed, shot, and left to die in his car. After that, everything got worse. Your college grades plummeted, and your mother began to smoke more frequently and turned to alcohol for comfort. Your sibling was absolutely unbearable to be around anymore, with how petty and annoying they were.
They made you feel like you were nothing. And you KNEW you weren't, but what could you do to get away? Nowhere and no one in this world could make you happy again, and you knew it.
You stick your hand into the icy water. This would be painful, but you didn't have any rope and didn't want to leave a mess of blood anywhere. This was the only way.
You take in a shaky breath. It was now, or never. Maybe you'll find peace in whatever oblivion awaiting for your arrival.
A tear slips from your eye as you murmur a soft goodbye to the world and let the canoe tip over. Your body instinctively rebels, panicked breaths drawing in water that tasted faintly of dirt and grass.
It's so pretty, you think as you gaze at the moon one last time. Your lungs scream for air, but your heart screams for the relief it's about to earn. A shame it's the last time I'll see it.
—
A shame, really. That soul wasn't really ready for it to end.
How can you tell?
I hear it's cries from the depths of the void. Normally, I would let them sit for a moment to come to terms with their death before passing them onto their next life... but I think I will speed things up a bit.
Are you sure? I don't want to get in trouble with the higher ups. Time says to wait at least 500 years.
Trust me, darling. You don't get in trouble for something they don't know about.
—
At first, there is nothing. No sight or hearing, neither feeling, smell or taste. You can't even feel your own body as your conscience drifts in the never ending black.
You hear soft whispers. They're melancholy, as if they're telling a sad secret that few others know. You feel the intent, but no words at all. However, the heavy presence of comforting.
Soon, you hear something.
Bubbles shifting, making noise from some sort of liquid. You could also hear the full humming of electricity around you.
The next sense that comes back to you is feeling. The sliding of wires against your body. They seemed to be attached to you, and you could feel the energy flowing into you from where they were attached. However, you couldn't taste a single thing and you couldn't even feel your tongue or lips.
Slowly, your eyelids slide open. They're quickly shut when you're met with light- certainly not blinding, but much more than there was inside of that strange void you were asleep inside of for so long. You carefully open them again, and begin surveying your surroundings.
You're in a test tube thing. A large one, filled with a clear fluid that was tinted slightly gray. Plenty of wires lead from the sides to your body. You look down... and instead of seeing your flesh, you see pearly white bone. You jolt in surprise, stirring the water and the cables, which are relatively loose against your bones.
You see a ribcage, and a glowing white light coming from the inside, where your heart would be if you were still human. With a bit of experimentation, you find that you're still able to move your limbs freely, although in sluggish and weighed down motions. Maybe because of all this fluid, or because you were freshly 'reborn.'
Reborn. Wow, what a concept.
You peer through the glass separating your containment chamber to see rows apon rows of other chambers just like yours. You can see the silhouettes of sleeping figures in various shapes and sizes. What the hell is this? Were you just reborn into the matrix?? This isn't what you signed up for.
Suddenly, the LED lights illuminating the interior of your tube steadily glow brighter as you hear a muffled buzzing sound from the outside. The container shifts, and sends you floating gently to the side of it. You notice you're being moved into what seems like an elevator.
As you're moved down, you press yourself against the glass and look through. It's dark out there, but it seems like there are several thousands of people sleeping in pods. Just what was all of this? Were you prisoners? Were you in cryostasis on some voyage through the stars?
The elevator halts it's descent. With a couple more beeping sounds, the fluid in the container is slowly drained from the capsule. The air is cold, but surprisingly not uncomfortable. Maybe because you don't have skin anymore?
You hear a voice coming from what sounds like a speaker in the capsule. It's feminine, calm, and clear. "Subject C-5385, Please carefully remove the cables connected to your body. Your capsule will be opened soon."
You're a test subject? Was this like all of that undertale fan-fiction where sans and papyrus are test subjects made by the Royal Scientist? Your memories of undertale were a little fuzzy and distorted, but you're sure this wasn't how it went. You had a damn serial number. That meant there were thousands and thousands of other... people here too.
You pull off each of the wires carefully. It stings a little, and you can feel the flow of vitalizing energy stop being poured into you. The light in your ribcage flickers, which causes some concern in you, but it doesn't feel very threatening.
The capsule opens with a hiss, glass lid lifting upwards. Steam pours out. You take a careful peek outside; there's a pathway illuminated with white that leads forward, where you can distantly hear footsteps and soft murmurs. You tentatively step out and walk slowly in that direction, feet making soft clacking noises against the ground.
You exit the dark hallway into a smaller room with a person in a lab coat and a gas mask. They have glowing white eyes, dark grey skin, and droopy goat's ears coming from the side of their head. They have snow white that cut short. Their clothes look neat and pristine, with a name tag that says 'Dr. Cohan.'
They smile at you. "Hello, little one. Here, put this on, please." They hand you a long, white t-shirt with your serial code on the left sleeve, and some black shorts. "Once you're done, head out into the next room. Once everybody from your batch has emerged, sorting will begin."
Sorting????? Batch????? What kind of (cool as fuck) nightmare is this?! You hoped nothing too bad would happen.
You slide on the clothes, and you get the privilege to look at yourself in the mirror. You definitely have the same body type as a sans... short, although not very stocky. Your bones were sleek and slim although they weren't fragile. You had sharp teeth, no scars, and the eyelights in your skull were tinted a peach color.
"Nervous?" Dr. Cohan asks gently, placing a hand on your shoulder. You flinch, but slowly nod in confirmation. He laughs, and his voice sounds a bit like the soft tinkling of bells. "Don't worry, you'll be fine. Nobody gets hurt during sorting. It's just to make sure you have a role that would suit you and keep any disabilities in mind."
You try to speak, but nothing comes out. The doctor notices, giving your shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "You'll learn to talk soon. All of us are programmed to understand speech at our time of creation, so learning how to communicate should be easy enough."
You hear another buzzing sound, and the Doctor flinches. He gently pushed you to the doorway that would lead you out of his little room. "Sorry, little one, but I have to provide clothing for the next subject. You have to go on, now. I'll see you again soon after the sorting."
You look at him hesitantly, before opening the door.
Time to take a step into your new life, you suppose.
