SELENA WOKE TO THE SOUND OF SOMEONE YELLING HER NAME.
She opened her eyes, but they didn't seem to focus on anything. Everything was fuzzy, it was like she was woken too soon.
A blonde figure ran up to her and helped her sit up, "Selena! S, are you okay?"
"Jason." Selena mumbled, looking around, "What happened?"
Where was Cato?
"You did it." He helped her stand, but she was still weak. Jason had to keep an arm around her so she wouldn't fall, "I don't know how you did it, but you saved the city."
She wasn't sure how she did it either. The memory of that boy, of his name, seemed to slip away the moment the smoke cleared.
"And Cato?"
Jason shook his head, "I'm sorry."
While Selena was dealing with the volcano, Jason had tried to free Cato by cutting off his arm. He wrapped his belt around his bicep to keep him from bleeding out, but nothing helped.
Cato laid in his arms, turning to stone. And Jason couldn't do anything to save him.
He wanted to blame Selena. She was the one who showed up out of the blue, and began to change the dynamics of their lives.
He wanted to leave her behind.
But she was apart of something bigger, that much was clear.
Cato's body was absorbed by the Earth, no doubt Terra's doing.
"We need to get back to camp." Jason stated, "Something is happening. Something bad."
Selena stared down at the now dormant volcano. Tears streamed down her face as it hit her, only two of them were going back.
She started something she didn't want to finish.
"I don't understand." She whispered, "I still don't remember anything."
Jason scoffed and stepped away from her, "Is that really what you're worried about right now? Cato's dead, Selena! Because of you, he's gone. You released Terra, and who knows what's going to happen now."
She wiped at the tears on her cheeks. It was all for nothing. She didn't get her memories back, and she lost Cato in the process. Not to mention, she doubt Jason was ever gonna trust her again, or those back at Camp Jupiter.
Maybe she wasn't meant to belong anywhere.
It was a long, awkward trip home for the remaining two demi-gods. Selena cried on the plane, trying not to think of Cato and his jokes, how he always tried to make light of bad situations.
He vouched for her, and she let him down.
She tried not to sob harder when she thought back on their first interaction,
"Um, what exactly does it mean—your standing for me?"
"I guarantee your good behavior," Cato explained with that bright smile of his, a smile that could get anyone to feel better, "I teach you the rules, answer your questions, make sure you don't disgrace the legion."
"And...if I do something wrong?"
"Then I get killed along with you," He answered,
He paid the ultimate price, and now who knows how things are gonna be around camp.
Would they kick her out? Banish her? Kill her?
"It happens." Jason stated, not looking at her as they took a taxi ride back to the hill by camp, "Quests are dangerous. Campers die."
"It was all my fault." Selena whispered, her voice hoarse from the crying,
"Yeah, it is, but it was always supposed to happen this way." Jason sighed as they crossed over the Golden Gate Bridge, "I can be mad at you all I want, but it's not going to change things, Selena. Something bigger is going on, and we have to figure it out before it gets worse." He stared out the window, "I thought we'd have more time since the Titan War this summer, but I think the Great Prophecy is starting."
"The Great Prophecy? Like the one from the temple?" She asked him,
He nodded, "I think you just jumpstarted the prophecy. Like Octavian said, every time someone tries to interpret it, something bad happens."
Selena wasn't ready to enter camp yet. But as the two stood outside the gates, Jason gave her a comforting nod, like he was saying 'I won't let anything happen to you'.
The whole world stopped as they entered the gate. Everyone stopped and stared, and the whispering started.
Three left, but only two came back.
It wasn't long before Reyna came riding up on her unicorn, "Jason, you're back!" She observed the two, "Where's-"
"We should talk in the principia." Jason stated before Reyna could finish her question.
They all made their way over, and Reyna sat at the table. Jason and Selena stood in front of the cluttered table.
The two Greyhounds, Argentum and Aurum, growled at Selena. She swallowed nervously, glancing at Jason for some help.
Reyna whistled to get them to calm down before addressing the two, "Tell me everything."
So they did. They told her about travelling to Italy, taking on the dragon and the Lamia. Then came the story about Gaea on Mount Vesuvius. And how they lost Cato.
More tears came to Selena's eyes as Reyna lowered her head in defeat, "We shall hold a celebration for Cato. For his sacrifice."
"There's also something else we need to discuss." Jason stated,
"And what is that?"
"Gaea... and the Great Prophecy."
