Your Fault/ Last Midnight - Into the Woods AU

**There's a lot to unpack here. But let's just throw away the whole suitcase.

Baker: Hideo
Jack: Roshan
Witch: Dana
Little Red: Emika
Cinderella: Hammie

This song essentially explains the plot. Just go with it. I'm excited.**

"Yes! He's the one to blame!" Hideo hissed with anguish.

How did he get here? How did things come to this? His eyes fell upon the young girl in the wolfskin cape - Emika Chen. She held in her arms the newborn child of Hideo and his wife. Well, just Hideo now, since his wife...

No. He couldn't think about it. He'd lose his mind.

Then there was the young maiden - Hamilton - who had the slippers as pure as gold. Yet another stranger Hideo had crossed paths with.

And then Dana Taylor. The enchantress who had cursed Hideo and his wife, damning them to a childless life for eternity.

Calloused fingers ran over the silky material of the scarf in his hands. The scarf that Hideo's wife had left with, one hundred paces ago. Well, one hundred paces for them...and one footstep for the Giant. One devastating footstep.

He couldn't stand to look at the young man who had lured the Giant down here. The one who planted the beanstalk. "It's because of you there's a Giant in our midst," he rasped, blinded by rage, "and my wife is dead!"

The young lad, Roshan, shook his head. "But it isn't my fault! I was given those beans! You persuaded me to trade away my cow for beans!" He reflected back on their exchange, on Hideo's desperate need for a cow as white as milk. "And without those beans there'd have been no stalk to get up to the Giant in the first place-!"

"Wait a minute!" Hideo interjected. "Magic beans for a cow so old that you had to tell a lie to sell it, which you told!" he hissed, getting in Roshan's face. "Were they worthless beans? Were they oversold? Oh! And tell us who persuaded you to steal that gold!"

"So it's your fault!" Emika piped up.

       "No-"

"So it's your fault!" Hideo agreed.

         "No!"

"Yes, it is!" "It's not!" "It's true!"

"Wait a minute, though, I only stole the gold to get my cow back from you!" Roshan accused Hideo.

             "So it's your fault!" "Yes!"

"No it isn't! I'd have kept those beans, but our house was cursed!" Hideo whipped around to face Dana. "She made us get the cow to get the curse reversed!"

Dana examined her nails. "It's his father's fault that the curse got placed and the place got cursed in the first place!"

"Oh, then it's his fault!"

"So..."

"It was his fault!"

"Oh..." "Yes it is, it's his, I guess!"

"Wait a minute, though-" Roshan thought. "I chopped down the beanstalk, right? That's clear, but without any beanstalk, then what's queer is how did the second giant get down here in the first place- second place?"

"Yes..." "How?" "Hm..." "Well..."

"Who had the other bean?"

"The other bean?"

"The other bean..."

"You pocketed the other bean!" Roshan jabbed a finger at Hideo's chest.

"I didn't-! Yes, I did..."

"So it's your-"

"No it isn't, cause I gave it to my wife!"

"Then it's her-"

"NO IT ISN'T!" Hideo's outburst made Emika cower from arguing.

"Then whose is it?" asked Hammie.

Hammie...

"Wait a minute..." Hideo pondered, glancing at her. "She exchanged that bean to obtain your shoe, so the one who knows what happened to the bean is you!"

Hammie's eyes were wide. "You mean that old bean that your wife-? Oh, dear, well- I never knew and so I threw- well, don't look here!"

"So it's your fault!"

"But-"

"See, it's your fault!"

"But-"

"And it isn't mine at all!" Roshan cheered.

"But what?" Hideo asked.

Hammie huffed. "Well, if you hadn't gone back up again-" she pointed to Roshan.

"We were needy-"

"You were greedy! Did you need that hen?"

"But I got it for my mother!"

"So it's her fault then!" Emika sighed.

Hammie persisted. "Yes, and what about the harp in the third place?!"

"The harp, yes..." Hideo said.

"She went and dared me to!" Roshan accused Emika, who took immediate offense. "I dared you to?" "She dared me to! She said that I was scared to, she dared me!"

"No, I didn't"

"It's your fault!"

"WAIT A MINUTE!"

"If you hadn't dared him to-"

"If you had left the harp alone-"

"If you hadn't thrown away the beans-"

"We wouldn't be in trouble in the first place!"

"Well, she's the one who raised the beans in the first place!" Hammie called out into the whirlwind of argument.

Everyone faced Dana. "Yes, it's you who raised the beans in the first place!" they huffed, swarming. "It's your fault! You're responsible, you're the one to blame, it's YOUR FAULT!"

"Shhhh...." Dana shushed, turning to face them. In her arms she held the baby, whom Emika had left in the basket amidst all the arguing.

The witch began to quietly sing to the baby.

     "It's the last midnight
It's the last wish
It's the last midnight
Soon it will be boom
Squish!"

"Told a little lie..." she glared at Hideo-
"Stole a little gold-" then Roshan.
"Broke a little vow-" and then Emika.
"Did you?"
"Had to get your prince," she accused Emika.
"Had to get your cow," she hissed at Hideo.
"And to get your wish
Doesn't matter how
Anyway, it doesn't matter now
It's the last midnight
It's the boom
Splat!
Nothing but a vast midnight
Everybody smashed flat!
Nothing we can do
Not exactly true
We could always give her the boy!" she launched at Roshan.

"NO!" Hammie yelped, reaching for Roshan to protect him.

"No, of course what really matters is the blame
Someone you can blame
Fine, if that's the thing you enjoy
Placing the blame
If that's the aim
Give me the blame
Just give me the boy!"

"No!" cried Emika, wrestling out of Hideo's protective grasp to reach for Roshan.

"No?
You're so nice
You're not good
You're not bad
You're just nice
I'm not good
I'm not nice
I'm just right
I'm the witch
You're the world
I'm a hitch
I'm what no one believes
I'm the witch
You're all liars and thieves
Like his father
Like his son will be, too
Oh, why bother?
You'll just do what you do

"It's the last midnight
So, goodbye all
Coming at you fast, midnight
Soon you'll see the sky fall!"

"Here, you want a bean?" Pulling a bean from her pocket, she flicked it to the ground. A tiny beanstalk sprouted from the earth.

"Have another bean-" and again.

"Beans were made for making you rich!"

One, two, three more...

"Plant them and they soar
Here, you want some more?
Listen to the roar
Giants by the score!
Well, you can blame another witch...

"It's the last midnight
It's the last verse
Now, before it's past midnight
I'm leaving you my last curse

I'm leaving you alone
You can tend the garden, it's yours
Separate and alone
Everybody down on all fours

All right, mother, when?
Lost the beans again!
Punish me the way you did then!
Give me claws and a hunch
Just away from this bunch

And the gloom

And the doom

And the boom

Cruuunch!"
