**I love the musical Guys and Dolls and I wanted to do something like this. I was gonna make this based on I'll Know, but Sue Me has been stuck in my head all day so here we are.
TW: Hammie and Asher get in an argument. Kinda. Enjoy.**
Hammie crossed her arms. "Ash, why can't we elope right now?" she asked. For fourteen years - fourteen! - they had been engaged. He had proposed to her not long after the NeuroLink shut down, but Hammie didn't know she'd be kept waiting for this much time.
Of course, without Warcross, there had been nothing to hold them up. When Asher lived with this family, the money he made off of local games was what put food on their table. And now, those local games weren't coming to the rescue. So Ash, now with a fiancee, was struggling. In an act of desperation, he had gotten into online gambling with the hopes of making some money.
"Because, well, I gotta go to a prayer meeting," Ash said. See, he had lost a bet, but not a bet for money. He had challenged a certain ex-Demon Brigade captain to win the heart of the Brigade's most recent Wildcard. If Max succeeded, Ash would have to attend a meeting to be convinced out of illegally gambling. And this was the sticky situation he found himself in now.
"Ash," Hammie groaned, "this is the biggest lie you ever told me!" She placed her hands on her hips.
"But I promise you, it's true!" Ash pleaded.
Hammie scoffed and turned away. "You promise me this, you promise me that, you promise me anything under the sun..." she was starting to get impatient. "Then you give me a kiss and you're grabbing your hat and you're off to the races again!" She sighed sadly, looking out the window. "When I think of the time gone by..."
"Hammie," Asher stepped forward, trying to comfort her. "Hammie-"
"And I think of the way I tried..." Hammie stepped away before he could put his arms around her.
"Hammie!"
"I could honestly die!" Hammie said, backing away from him.
Ash sighed and stopped trying to fight back. "Call a lawyer and sue me, sue me," he said. "What can you do me," he shrugged. "I love you. Give a holler and hate me, hate me," he moved closer now. "Go ahead, hate me, I love you..."
"The best years of my life I was a fool to give to you," Hammie snapped back, but didn't move away. She looked into his eyes, searching for any hint of the man she fell in love with.
"Alright, already," Ash sighed, "I'm just a no-good nick, alright, already, it's true, so nu...?" he stepped forward and gently took her hands. "So sue me, sue me, what can you do me? I love you."
Hammie rolled her eyes and wrenched out of his grasp. "You gamble it here, you gamble it there. You gamble on everything, all except me!" she rambled. "And I'm sick of you keeping me up in the air, 'till you're back in the money again!" she continued, near tears. "When I think of the time gone by..."
"Hammie, Hammie..."
"And I think of the way I tried..."
"Hammie!"
"I could honestly die!" She wouldn't look at him now.
"Serve a paper and sue me, sue me," he begged, trying so hard to get her back. "What can you do me, I love you. Give a holler and hate me, hate me. Go ahead, hate me, I love you."
Hammie whipped around. "When you wind up in jail, don't come to me to bail you out!" she said, angry.
"Alright, already, so call a policeman," Ash gave in. "Alright, already, it's true, so nu? So sue me, sue me, what can you do me?" He wasn't going to let her leave. Not after how long they'd been together, not after how close they'd grown. He wasn't gonna let a gambling website break them apart. "I love you."
Her eyes softened, if only for a moment before she steeled herself. He's joking, she told herself, and continued on her tangent. "You're at it again, you're running the game, I'm not gonna play second fiddle to that!" she rushed toward the door of their house. "And I'm sick and tired of strolling around," she grasped the handle, turning back to him pointedly. "And I'm telling you now that we're through!" she turned the handle. But...then she paused. Is this really what she wanted to do? Her angry expression softened once more, longer this time. "When I think of the time gone by..."
"Hammie, Hammie," he met her at the door.
She didn't want to fight back any more. What was the use? She sighed sadly. "And I think of the way I tried..." Her voice was softer now, weaker.
"Hammie," he said softly, taking her hand. Hammie didn't resist.
"I could honestly die..."
He placed a hand under her chin, lifting it so she would meet his eyes. "Sue me, sue me, shoot bullets through me," he murmured, now so close to her. "I love you." He, very gently, pressed his lips to hers.
When they parted, Hammie, stood there for a moment, studying Ash's eyes. Where would she go if she didn't have him? What would she be? She'd have nothing. She'd be nothing. She fell into his arms, quickly hugging him close to her. She couldn't abandon him now. She couldn't abandon him ever.
