Mt. Delight (SC Part 5)
**Jasuke! At camp, there was a trail on the campsite marked "Mt. Delight Trail." We only went up there once, and only a specific elective was allowed to go there more than once. But it was a long hiking trail leading up to the most gorgeous mountain view ever, and you could sit right on the cliff edge. Anyway, on with the show.**
Sasuke and Jax had made a deal to hang out at that evening's free time. And so they did. They had spent the majority of their free time together, after all. They met at two benches that were satisfyingly centered between Arethusa and Devil's Den. Seriously, they counted the steps: Ninety-five for Sasuke and ninety-six for Jax. Perfect.
On this specific free time, though, about halfway through camp, the benches were left to bask in the August sun.
"I found this really cool place that I want to check out," Jax had said, before leading Sasuke to a patch of grass in a far corner of the camp. A rocky path slipped through the trees, up, up, up into the distance, with a sign stuck in the gravel that read MT. DELIGHT TRAIL.
"Are we allowed to go up there?" Sasuke asked. "I don't see any counselors."
"Well," Jax shrugged. "Doesn't matter. We just won't get caught," she said and grinned.
Soon, their sneakers crunched against the rocks and soil as they walked in step along the path. The trail inclined ever so slightly, with nothing but nature on all sides.
There was something about the green of the trees. The gentle hushhh of the wind. The freshness of the air, the evening warmth, that gave everything a dreamlike quality. One spoken word might have chipped the ambiance as if it were delicate china. Jax and Sasuke looked around, their breath stolen, entranced like young kids their first time at Disney World.
Within a few minutes, the soil turned to solid rock and the trees cleared away. The rocks dropped to create a steep cliff that swept over the forest. As far as the eye could see were hills, mountains, trees, fields. Blue sky, spanning on and on for forever this way.
Jax stepped closer to the cliff's edge. "Wow," she said softly, in unison with Sasuke.
She sat down on the rocky earth, her silvery eyes still taking in everything. The open air, the sunshine, the view that placed her on top of the world. Was she dreaming?
Sasuke sat down next to her. "I'm really glad we came up here," he said.
Jax nodded. "Definitely."
His eyes flicked to look at her. In all its majesty, the view had nothing on Jax. The view hadn't spent hours with Sasuke. The view didn't make him feel like he wasn't alone. The view isn't what made him breath deep and steel his nerves.
"Jax?" he asked.
"Yeah?"
"Can I do something that might be kinda crazy?"
"Shoot."
And for a split second, Sasuke's lips touched Jax's cheek. Her skin was so soft, and that's all Sasuke could think about in that moment. It distracted him, up until now, from noticing the blush dusting Jax's cheeks.
Then a corner of Jax's lips turned up. She, slowly and silently, rested her head on Sasuke's shoulder.
And Sasuke wrapped an arm around her shoulders. He braced for the familiar worry to come flooding through him, sounding the alarm, the panic of what this meant for his friendship with Jax. But...it never came. Here, in this moment, in the sun, alone with Jax, everything was fine. Nothing was wrong. Everything was perfect.
