Riiiiiiiiing.
Silence.
Riiiiiiiiiing.
Asher heard the phone ringing from the other room, quickly walking over to answer it. "Hello?"
Hammie's voice on the other end practically made Ash melt. "Dr. Asher, please," she was begging
"This is Asher Weisenbachfeld," Ash answered.
He heard Hammie sigh. "Dr. Asher, vis-a-vis what Roshan did- or rather, hasn't done-"
"Hamilton, how are you?"
But Hammie was focused. "You must exorcise a devil, 'cause it inhabits Roshan's daughter," she pleaded, glancing at her child and sighing. As much as she loved Emika, Hammie was beginning to see just how much their daughter was growing to be like Roshan.
Asher quickly whipped out a notepad and pen. "Uh-huh. Uh-huh."
"Please come to our house," Hammie requested. "And talk a bit with Emi, it's a slight exaggeration, but she's sick in the head," she said bitterly. She thought of how other people might say, What a lovely tight-knit family! "Oh, sure, sometimes, you'll think she's wonderful, but she's wild! I'm sure she's Roshan's child..."
Minutes later, Asher was on the way. Hammie told her daughter that a psychiatrist was coming to talk to her. But Emi wasn't having it. "What should I say to the man?" she asked. "Should I be mean to the man?"
"Just be yourself," Hammie reassured.
Emika cocked her head to the side. "I'll be myself?"
"Stop asking questions," Hammie said. "Be yourself!"
"I'll be myself!" Emika said, her smile suddenly coming back.
Hammie scoffed and rolled her eyes, straightening out her apron. "Don't be disgusting. Be yourself!" Ding dong. "Go, gogogo!"
Emika rushed to the door and plastered on a smile. The man was tall, and had the most piercing blue eyes. Could he read Emika's thoughts? "Hello to my house," she mumbled. "So good of you to travel on account of my unraveling, now let's eat some food!" she gestured him inside.
"Let's talk," Ash offered to Emika.
Hammie greeted Asher from the kitchen. "I think, before the food gets cold,"
Ash's heart did a fluttery thing when he met Hammie's eyes. Time to jaw. First, I'll extend my paw...
It was all Ash could do to stay conscious. I think she's holding it so tenderly I'll probably faint...if so, I'd rather die in this position than remain the saint. You think- you know I'm not! Although, I must be showing better-than-the-norm restraint...
Oh, what a lovely table. Such a romantic table, they all thought together. "Knives in place, lots of space to spread out and eat,"
"Notice how our eyes discreetly..." Hammie and Ash blushed and turned away from each other.
"Please come to our house!" all three joined together. "The dinner's on the table, we will talk if we are able to, but probably we won't. We sit..."
Asher crossed his arms. The kid looks pretty miserable...
Emika eyed Ash warily. Uninspired...
"Ain't that the truth?" Ash chuckled. Did I say that out loud? Emika thought to herself.
"We're tired," they all said. Emika flicked Ash's hand from her shoulder.
"I think the room looks just a wee bit small," Asher observed. "This girl agrees," Hammie joined in.
"Adieu," Ash and Emika said, gesturing Hammie into the other room. She scoffed, but obliged. "I'll wait outside and hold the food."
"I do not eat at all at times like these," Ash explained.
"The worst is through," Hammie reassured her daughter, ruffling her hair.
"There's work to do," Ash reminded Hammie with a clearing of his throat. Hammie met his eyes once more.
"I'll wait..."
She'll wait, Ash thought.
They'll wait, Jason observed.
"I'll wait for you," Hammie said with a soft smile, eyes on Asher as she finally departed.
"Mr. Asher," Emika said, snapping him out of his trance. "I get apoplexy thinking of my father. I resemble him in far too many ways," she said with aggravation. He thought of her vain, grumpy father. "His sad demeanor, the way he acts the swine...at least his room is cleaner than mine," she giggled softly. Ash laughed, validating Emika's joke. Then she frowned and got serious again. "Is it fatal? Do you see real similarities between us? He and Tremaine live like...Well, I think it's clear..." Ten months ago, Roshan had run off with his friend, divorcing Hammie in the process. That had put Emika under the impression that love was gross. But then she kept hearing Hideo Tanaka on the radio...ugh. She couldn't hold it in anymore. She rose from the table. She paced frantically. "What do I do? What do I say? How do I ask? What do I hope for?" she took a quick breath. "Is it my mind? Love isn't free! If love isn't blind, what do I see-?!"
"STOP!"
Ash grabbed her by the shoulders and set her on the kitchen counter.
"Look around you! No one's screaming at you! So you feel alright for about ten minutes, if you feel alright for ten minutes, feel alright for twenty minutes! Feel alright for forty minutes! Drop it and smile!" He took Emika's hands and pulled her to her feet, swaying his arms with hers in some goofy dance. "Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life? Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life? Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life?" he paused expectantly.
Emika stayed planted. Dumbfounded.
"...is this therapy?"
At that time, Hammie entered. "Chop chop chop chop chop I chopped it! It's a gourmet version of chicken merengo! Took me all day," she set the dish on the table. I'll say it was worth the time! I lie..."
Roshan stalked in from the living room and rolled his eyes. "Why is he always here?" he asked, gesturing dismissively to Asher.
"The psychiatrist returning," stated Tremaine omnisciently. "Returning...five sessions later..."
At another session, Asher sat Emika down, per usual. "Try to forget all things homely," he pleaded of her. "Try to forget all things snide. Nothing's as good as you recall. Count what's good, then divide! If you count, it's alright! You can figure out the world, you can add and subtract at will, you can cover up the past!" he took her hands. "You can kill the pain very easily!" Emika rolled her eyes. "Is this therapy?" she asked in response.
"Right, this is therapy!" they all sang at her.
"So scram!" she commanded, shooing everybody away except for her psychiatrist.
She took a breath. "Asher, as regarding your intentions to my mother," she eyed him meaningfully. "Are they everything a woman would desire?" Asher blushed, but Emika continued with a knowing grin. "Her hand is ready, it only needs a ring. I'll buy confetti and sing! I'm embarrassed, it's not my responsibility to ask you, but I wonder if it's ever crossed your mind?"
After a few more moments of Emika's prodding, Ash snapped. He stood and pced the kitchen. "What do I say? Where do I look? Why do I laugh? How do I answer? Is it my mind?Love isn't free! If love isn't blind, what do I see-?!"
"Stop!" Now Emika grabbed Ash by the shoulders. "Look around you! A lot of nice furniture," she gestured at the dining room. "Someone's bringing you dinner. Someone brought you your lunch, someone's washing your laundry, washing your socks!" She flicked Asher's arm. "Jesus Christ! Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life? Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life?"
Ash grinned and joined in, finally seeing Emi's point. "Why don't I feel alright for the rest of my life? Whoo!"
Everyone joined in on this moment of realization for Asher. "Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life? Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life? Why don't you feel alright for the rest of your life?" It became a party, a wild, happy dance. "Feel, feel, feel, feel alright! Feel, feel, feel, feel alright! Feel, feel, feel, feel alright! Feel alright for the rest of your..."
Life!"
