Chess - Hasher

**This one has been in my Drafts for a long time. No trigger warnings. Enjoy :)**

Ash leaned over the chessboard, brows furrowed with concentration. Sitting across from him was Hammie, who was giggling as she watched her boyfriend try to determine his next move.

"I challenge you to a game of chess," Ash had challenged so bravely that morning. "I've been practicing." Hammie smiled. "Okay, sure. But don't take it too personally when you lose."

So far, Hammie had claimed two of Ash's pawns, both knights and a rook as her own. Ash had knocked out a pawn and Hammie's queen ("She's more valuable than all the pawns combined!").

Asher eventually used his bishop to claim the spot of one of Hammie's pawns. His triumphant smirk faded when, before he could even move his hand away, Hammie's rook knocked the bishop from the board.

     "Damn," he cursed softly.

Hammie giggled, that familiar competitive spark in her eyes.

Ash moved one of his pawns diagonally, knocking out a knight that was threatening his queen.

     Hammie's smile never once faltered.

"It's not all about knocking out pieces, you know," she said, her lips curling into a smile.

      "I beg to differ."

"Oh yeah?" As Hammie said this, she picked up her rook and moved it one space to the right, directly in line with Ash's king but not taking any of his pieces.

     "What was that f-"

     "Checkmate."

     "Shit."

Indeed, Asher's king had nowhere to go from its spot on the edge of the board without being in danger of Hammie's pieces. Should he move to the left, her remaining knight was there, waiting to put him in check. A pawn waited to the right. Her second rook waited should he move diagonally, and a bishop kept him from doing the reverse.

     "How did y-"

"Remember, don't take it too personally," she grinned.
