Upon the Plane of Ecliptick

(Found poem extracted from a letter by Issac Newton to Richard Bentley, dated 10 December, 1692)

The matter of our planets

and all the Universe

scattered through the Heavens,

each particle innate,

gravity and space throughout,

all fall down.

Supernatural Sun,

the center of the orbs,

a blind design

turning into comets,

and comets into planets,

upon the plane of Ecliptick.

Were all the planets

swift or slow,

or all their motions understood?

Adjust those things together,

that cause to be not blind;

That Harmony of Systeme

that was the choice of chance.
