Keep Calm and Carry On

(Historic Event - London Blitz, 1940)

The kids are away in the country, when will we see them again?

It's so very hard to be parted but hopefully they are well?

They come in the night the bombers out of the London sky

Each must now seek their shelter prepare for the coming din.

Some like a Morrison shelter for when the roof caves in

Stick it under the table, a couple can get in.

Some's got one in the garden, you can get a family in

But most'll make for the stations deep below the ground

Cheek by jowl with the neighbours deep, deep underground.

You have to get there early to find a decent place

Through the streets in darkness, they've shut off all the lights.

And in the dark there's silence, all we can do is wait.

Then there's the wail of the sirens, we know that they're on their way

Latecomers race for the shelter or try to just carry on.

We do our best to stay cheerful, 'Keep Calm and Carry On'

But we know what's coming is dreadful and some won't make it through

We've lost sight of life as we knew it but just have to muddle through.

Next it's the drone of the engines, we imagine what's overhead

That first they'll be dropping incendiaries to set our City alight

Set fire to our homes as a guiding light for heavier bombs to come.

And our homes will be bombed to rubble and families buried beneath

And we'll search amidst the wreckage for bodies or sign of life

Night after night it will happen but life must still go on

And we'll carry on tomorrow until they come again

And death will be back again and again but London must carry on.
