au chapter. The new professor (1)
EXTRAS. AU CHAPTER:
THE NEW PROFESSOR (1)
The sun was already high in the sky when Sade returned from her morning run, nervously looking at her watch. The student had decided to take a little side trip today, but she hadn't considered the fact that it would waste so much time. Hurrying towards her dormitory, she frowned slightly as she saw her roommate searching frantically in her wardrobe.
"Oaklynn? Why did you make such a mess-"
"Haven't you heard the news?" the young woman cut her off abruptly, jumping up and down in excitement, her arms full of all kinds of clothes. "Mr. Bautista has a substitute!"
Sade frowned even more as she put her bag away, retrieving some clothes in the process to get into the shower.
"In the middle of the year?" she asked, surprised at the sudden change of professor. "And what does that have to do with you? You don't even have him in class-"
"Apparently he wanted to continue to devote himself to research." cut her off again Oaklynn as she put what looked like the fifth coat of mascara back on her lashes. "But that's not the important thing, people say the substitute is awfully good looking." she continued, hopping towards her.
Sade's mouth formed a simple O as her roommate continued to crowd around their room getting ready to make a "good impression" on the new teacher.
The two young women had completely opposite characters, but that hadn't stopped them from getting along very well. Oaklynn was studying graphic design while Sade was studying international relations, with a long list of minors and extra-curricular activities that she voluntarily inflicted on herself. And that's why she had decided on another whim to enrol in Mesoamerican Studies, having bought many books on the subject during the summer holidays.
"Okay love, I'll let you get ready." said Oaklynn kissing her cheeks, retrieving her bag on the way. "I'll save you a seat, don't worry."
Opening the door to their room, she ran her hand through her hair for the umpteenth time before turning abruptly to Sade. "Is my cleavage revealing?"
The young woman shook her head, suppressing a smile. "A lot."
"Great! Hurry up, I'll see you later."
Sade sighed before locking herself in the bathroom, moving as fast as she could so as not to be that late. With any luck, she'd make it to the last of the arrivals before the auditorium door closed. Puffing herself with perfume, she collected her things before scurrying down the corridors, praying to all the gods that the class hadn't started yet.
Please, please, please.
The young woman bit her lip when she saw the door closed, closing her eyes briefly before huffing. She hated being late, it meant she had to walk across the room with everyone watching. Gathering her courage, she rapped lightly with her fist before opening the door, unable to help but widen her eyes at the filled seats. Usually the class didn't attract this many people, but here the amphitheatre was packed. And the reason, she found it immediately when her gaze turned to the desk that stood not far from the front door, a dark-haired man leaning against it. The man she assumed was the professor turned his head towards her, his expression unreadable, his brown eyes looking her up and down.
What an impression I make of arriving late.
"You must be Sade Udaku?" he asked after a moment, his gaze still locked in hers, a small smile on the corner of his lips.
The way he had said her name made her hair stand on end, making her forget for a moment where she was. A rich accent that seemed to have already taken its toll as she heard a few people in the audience audibly sigh in delight.
Is this still a course on Mesoamerican cultures or?
The young student couldn't find the strength to answer, simply nodding her head and swallowing slightly. She couldn't express how embarrassed she was to have all eyes on her just because she had the stupid idea of taking a trip this morning.
"You didn't do your essay too I suppose?" he added, crossing his arms, his muscles tensing through the fabric of his shirt.
Sade opened her mouth before closing it again, taking out of her binder the ten-page essay her former teacher had requested. Approaching him, she let out a small "No, I did it" before handing it to him. The substitute continued to stare at her for a moment before retrieving the paper, unable to hide his surprise when he read the first few lines. Squinting, he turned his attention back to the student who wondered if she had left a mistake in her essay, her expression somewhat apprehensive.
"Really good. You can go sit down." he finally said, following her with his eyes as she hurried upstairs to Oaklynn, who had brought a girl to sit on the floor so she could save a place for her in the auditorium crowd.
"Breathe." she whispered to her with a slight laugh, seeing her hide her face in her hands.
"I wanna die."
"Don't be dramatic, I'm late all the time."
Sade gave a bored look to her roommate who continued to smile mischievously at her before pulling out her computer, keeping her eyes from glancing towards the front of the room.
The class passed quietly, the teacher who introduced himself as José Mejía surprisingly captivating the attention of students who had never attended the class before. There was that hint in his voice, beyond the accent, which already made listening more pleasant, which made people want to listen to him. It was moments after he had asked the students to do some research that she realised he was reading her essay, causing her to stress. Turning her attention back to her screen, Sade fought the urge to look up to see his reaction, hoping to determine what grade she would get.
"Sade." called Oaklynn softly, jostling her shoulder slightly.
"Hmm?"
"The professor is looking at you."
The young student widened her eyes, raising them slightly before returning them to her computer, meeting the mysterious gaze of their new teacher.
"I wrote shit-"
"Or you've written something amazing and he can't believe his eyes. Plus, he was checking you out when you walked into the lecture hall-"
"You're talking nonsense Lynn."
"Studies are your specialty, mine is men, I know what I'm talking about."
Sade didn't want to believe her friend's words, although she could feel the man's gaze on her from where she stood. Eyes that looked at her surreptitiously, searching for hers behind the glasses whose reflection prevented her from knowing if she was watching him in return.
"You know, I played that story on Choices. I think the title was Queen B or something. The main character is in a relationship with one of her teachers, who's super hot by the way, and they do some really naughty stuff. For example, he's already taken her on his desk before-"
"Oaklynn!" the young woman snapped in a low voice as she heard what her roommate was sharing. "I'm not going to have an affair with my teacher! It's forbidden-"
"It's forbidden where? This isn't high school, you're totally allowed, you're both adults and have been vaccinated. You-"
Embarrassed, and thankful for her skin complexion that surely hid the burns on her cheeks, she buried her head in her hands. She couldn't deny it, the professor was attractive, very attractive even, but that was where it ended.
"Why are you telling me this? Weren't you as interested in him as more than a few of the people who filled this room to the brim?" she finally asked, stopping herself from looking at Mr. Mejía.
"He's hot. But Mr. Hot only has eyes for you right now, and any little groupies who want to convince themselves otherwise need only to open their eyes wide."
"Oaklynn-"
"Thank you for your attention and I'll see you next time." the teacher announced to the surprise of the other students who let out a few "Is it time already?"
Even Sade had not seen the time go by, yet it was indeed two hours of class that she was enduring with Mr. Bautista. Putting her things away, she hurried down the stairs after Oaklynn, hoping to leave the lecture hall without attracting the attention she had received for being late. But as she approached the door, she heard the substitute call out to her.
"Miss Udaku, a word please?"
His question was more like an order than anything else, leaving no room for possible opposition. Oaklynn frowned slightly as she looked at her, her eyes alternating between her position and the professor's before a smile split her lips. She made an obscene gesture with her hands, causing Sade to widen her eyes and turn her head slightly to see if the man had noticed, sighing in relief as she saw him looking at some papers on his desk. Her roommate blew her a kiss before disappearing into the crowd of students after closing the door, plunging the room into a heavy silence.
"Come closer please, I'm not going to bite you." he told her with a slight chuckle, seeing her almost glued to the now closed door, avoiding his gaze like the plague.
Sade moistened her lips slightly before walking over to his desk, keeping her eyes glued to the floor.
This is so embarrassing.
A clearing of his throat caught her attention as the professor continued to observe her behaviour, unable to hide his amusement at her reactions. As he opened his mouth, she quickly cut him off, letting herself succumb to the stress eating her up inside.
"I'm so sorry I was late. And I'm so sorry if the test was crap-no, I shouldn't use that word. I didn't have time to proofread my papers this morning-"
"Because you went running in the woods?
About to answer, Sade immediately closed her mouth at his question, frowning. Dumbfounded, she didn't answer right away, looking for something to say.
"I saw you running this morning when I was doing my own jogging. Pretty good endurance."
"Thanks." she blurted out, still stunned, especially since he had to watch her for a long time to know she had stamina.
"And your test wasn't crap, as you say. On the contrary. That's what I wanted to talk to you about, by the way." he continued, his gaze remaining constantly on her as he spoke, taking in every inch of her face. "It's a really good job. Done with diligence... and passion."
His tongue deliberately flicked on the last word, sending an electric shock through her body. The atmosphere seemed strangely charged, leaving her almost panting.
What the fuck is going on?
"Thank you very much, it means a lot since I spent so much time on it," she finally replied, smiling thinly before continuing, "Though I couldn't make my part about K'uk'ulkan any more exhaustive since the books I borrowed didn't really mention him. Which is a pity for a god as interesting as him."
Sade stopped abruptly as she realised she was rambling, giving him an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I got a little too enthusiastic."
"No big deal. Actually, I could tell you more things about him."
Her interest visibly piqued, the young woman widened her eyes slightly, making him smile a little wider.
"Do you have any books to recommend?"
The man gave a small pout at her question before answering, "I do, I could lend them to you. But I have other information that I've been able to gather from," he paused in his sentence, seemingly searching for words. "personal research."
Nodding gently, the young woman gave him a sceptical look, pursing her lips. She definitely wanted to hear more about K'uk'ulkan, but being in a confined space, alone with him ― she didn't really know what to expect, Oaklynn's words sinking a little deeper into her brain. But her curiosity still took precedence over whatever concerns she had.
"I'd love to hear more."
José Mejía gave a simple smile before nodding, lifting himself off the desk he was leaning against. He searched for a few books in his briefcase before handing them to her, an unreadable fog in his eyes.
"I've got a few things to do this evening, but you can meet me tomorrow after my six o'clock class here," he said, watching her flip through the pages of one of the books he'd passed her, the spark of curiosity shining brightly in her eyes.
Seemingly satisfied with what she had been able to read, she closed the book before looking up at him, a big smile on her lips. "I'll be there, Sir."
