II.2 Sagea Aurist

Sagea catches the sunset as she climbs the biggest tree she has ever seen in her life.

Her focus is on keeping a tight grip on the branches to avoid a long fall; but in the back of her mind, she couldn't care less. After what happened on Auroris, nothing really scares her now. A fall from a giant tree wouldn't make her panic.

She found the tree by crossing the land bridge on the first try. It's the biggest one on the bridge located halfway across, surrounded by others in varying sizes. The roots spiral from the ground and split off into branches, hanging over the edge with dense vegetation. The leaves are dark green and two times larger than her hand stretched out.

Sagea isn't just climbing the tree for her enjoyment.

She's looking for a flower.

On her walk between continents, she spotted dozens of flowers littered around one tree. They still look fresh and appear to have fallen from the crown of the tree.

Sagea climbs up with the goal of finding more flowers that are flourishing.

She isn't worried about damaging her suit either. During her escape from the stratus vessel, she jumped out at the last moment when the vessel grazed the top of the trees. She made a desperate attempt to reach out for a sturdy branch, but they kept snapping. They did slow down the speed of her fall, and it caused a less damaging impact. The whole time she fell, her clothes didn't receive any scuffs, scratches or tears.

It's irrational to be scared of trees. They saved her life. Jarl's bold personality change on Auroris has given her the courage to embrace new and dangerous things. She thought the attack from the Psyke neytives was another cause for that courage.

Once Sagea reaches the crown, she sees something moving below her.

She hides inside the first layer of leaves and sees who's crossing the bridge. He has an average build and black hair with a few patches of red strands. There are spikes along his back covering his spine. She knows he's the Inphernos neytive. It looks like he's in a hurry to get across before sunset.

She should do the same. Finish the climb to beat the high tide. Instead, she plans on setting up her little shelter inside the tree. If she can find the flowers first, she can rest easy and sleep closer to the sky.

The Inphernos neytive disappears past the other trees.

Sagea turns her attention back to the branch in front of her, but stops abruptly to see another neytive.

It's the Ra-Dimar she met in the Dining Pavilion.

He's dawning his new suit and has linen wrapped underneath him. She notices him moving in a disoriented manner. He's trailing the Inphernos neytive while keeping his distance.

Sagea's interest peaks again. She wants to follow them and figure out what the Ra-Dimar neytive is going to do if he runs into the Inphernos neytive. During their first interaction, he was hiding something from their first interaction and she still wanted to learn more about him. She hopes he's not like the more aggressive neytives who were chosen for the Knyghts Voyage.

With the sun almost gone, she knows it will have to wait.

Heaving herself up, branch after branch, Sagea is in the crown of the tree. Phase fills the sky faster than she can breathe. She couldn't see anything at this point, but something amazing happens.

The tree comes to life.

The flower she's been looking for blooms behind several leaves and fills the dark with a red glow. It has six thin pedals that make a curved hexagonal shape, a small black pistil in the center and copper colored stamen. Connected to the receptacle is a long black stem, with rounded leaves and sharp thorns pointing down.

More flowers light up inside the tree. She can only imagine in her mind what it looks like from a distance. It must be some sort of beacon. A natural beacon.

The last flower that opens up appears next to her, brushing two petals against her hand.

Sagea places two fingers on the stem and plucks it from the branch. The flower continues to pulsate its radiant glow. She brings the petals to her face and inhales the aroma.

Her senses heighten up more. It wasn't just the scent of the flower. She can feel vibrations in the tree, down to the massive roots. The rustling of every single leaf can be heard from where she is. The colors around her become more luminous and vibrant. This sudden display of nature frees her of her worries as she places the flower petals against her lips.

Sagea removes the thorns and takes one of her small braided strands of hair into her hand. She pushes the stem into a knot and places it behind her earlobe.

At the start of the dial, her hair was green-brown. She changes it to red-pink after finding the flower. It's the closest color to match the beautiful plant.

Behind her is a perfect spot to rest. Two branches intertwine with each other where she can sleep and not be afraid to fall over.

Sagea takes her pack off and props it against the wood.

Once she's seated and comfortable, she zips her jacket up. Zaccur told them about the functions their outfits can offer them. On the first phase, she was surrounded by cold air that made it difficult to get some sleep. Thanks to her jacket's adjustable feature for multiple climates, she got some much needed sleep during the next phase. She can't believe she forgot what the Psyke preeminent told them. Perhaps she could've remembered if Arsival didn't launch his attack.

She doesn't want to think about what happened on Auroris, or what the others were feeling on that dial. Sleeping against a thriving tree and finding a different species of flora is the only moment occupying her mind.

The thought of the other candidates wanders through her mind the first few dials.

Sagea hopes the others survived the attack. That they're alive and well on Novennéa. The one neytive she is most concerned about is Jarl. She still can't believe they let a neytive his age on the Knyghts Voyage, but he appears to be capable of handling himself. If they messed with his vessel, he could've used his space trigger to teleport far away from the explosion. She can see him traveling through one of the continents, building a small fire out of sticks and eating the fruits of Novennéa.

She really wants to see him again.

Exhaustion soon takes over her body. She wants to stay awake and stare at the flowers all phase, but she needs her energy for the next dial. The flashing lights won't be bothering her. In fact, she finds it soothing.

Sagea lays her head on top of her pack and stretches her limbs out, relaxing to the sound of the tree and the wind. She shuts her eyes while thinking of two things. The flower nestled in her hair and the ambition to find Jarl.
