Summary: Jenni and Elena had been together for a year, but Elena soon learnt that the Opal loved Ugine, even if the wolf hadn't realised for herself.

Elena Lightbourne was a lover, not a fighter. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and it had always been her biggest flaw.

She loved too hard and fast, not realising how much it would break her in the long run.

Love was something Jennifer Opal wasn't familiar with. Other than her previous crush on Roman Torchwick, which she realised was more admiration than a crush, she hadn't really been with anyone.

So when Elena asked Jenni to be her girlfriend, the Opal surprised everyone when the wolf faunus had said yes.

Maeve always said that Jenni was going to break Elena's heart, even if she didn't intend to. It was clear that the mechanic really did love Menagerie's princess, but it wasn't clear if she loved Elena as much as Elena loved her.

The fox faunus currently sat in a bar, beside her friends Alec Lightbourne, his boyfriend Thierry Louboutin and Crim Hunter. They were waiting for Blake Belladonna, Jenni and a friend of Jenni's to arrive.

Currently on stage, stood Elena, with a microphone in hand. The blonde was tipsy, and smiled down at her friends, who were also a little buzzed.

It was open mic night, and usually all different faunus would go on stage and sing. Elena had always loved to sing, but hadn't really performed before, but being well known around Menagerie due to the Lightbourne foundation, she already had a fanbase.

Maeve loved to sing, but truthfully if Stella wasn't by her side singing with her, she didn't seem interested in performing.

Alec truthfully couldn't sing to save his life. Chalk scraping down a chalkboard was probably more bearable than listening to him sing.

Crim, if drunk enough, would sing but mostly only karaoke. Maeve's plan for tonight was to get him buzzed enough to sing on stage.

Thierry on the other hand, was too shy. The boy was pretty quiet, and other than talking to insects he mostly talked to Alec. There was no chance he would get on stage and sing.

Finally, Blake arrived followed by Jenni and Jenni's friend Ugine.

Maeve's eyes landed on Blake before she huffed, "You're late." Blake smirked, "And you are absolutely beautiful." She responded, before gently kissing the redhead. Maeve kissed back, before they reluctantly broke apart. "You're forgiven." The Lopez smirked.

"Hey guys!" Jenni hummed, before motioning to Ugine. "This is my friend Ugine."

"Hi, it's nice to meet you." Ugine gave a wave, as Crim nodded in acknowledgment. "Nice to meet you too."

"For a drunk girl... she is singing really well." Thierry spoke, bringing their attention back to Elena. Alec had his arm slung around the Louboutin's waist, keeping his boyfriend close. "She's always loved to sing— ever since we were little kids."

"Yeah, except back then she didn't sound so elegant." Maeve confessed, causing a few chuckles. Blake rolled her eyes playfully at Maeve's comment, though she knew it was true.

"She has definitely come a long way." Blake spoke, before she took Maeve's hand in her own, seeming to miss her touch.

Crim eyed the faunus girls, remembering how much they seemed to hate eachother when he had first met them. Now, they were the type of couple to miss eachother whenever they were apart— even if it were for a few minutes.

The Hunter boy then turned to Jenni and Ugine, noticing how Ugine seemed to edge closer to Jenni. His body language alone made it evident that he liked her, but Jenni's eyes were fixated on the stage, where her girlfriend stood.

Clasping the microphone in hand Elena sung, "She says that people stare, cause we look so good together. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can't change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to."

Trying to compose herself and her sloppy posture due to her tipsiness, Elena continued, "And I can't change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to. My love, my love, my love, she keeps me warm."

Jenni was the first to clap, followed by Alec and the rest of their friends.

"Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all night." The cat faunus spoke into the microphone, earning some laughs before she suddenly seemed uncomfortable and rushed off stage.

"Elena—" Alec blurted, as Maeve suddenly rushed after her.

The Lopez entered the bathrooms, which Elena had entered moments prior. Hearing the Lightbourne hurl into a bowl, Maeve's face scrunched up in disgust.

"Lena, are you okay?" The fox faunus nervously asked once she heard Elena stop vomiting. "I think so." The blonde sighed, before she got up and stepped away from the toilet bowl.

It was then, Maeve noticed a trail of flower petals leading to the toilet. "What the hell." Maeve blurted, before she reluctantly took a few steps forward to see the toilet was full of flower petals.

Recognising that Elena was suffering from Hanahaki disease, she stepped back in shock.

"Elena..." She sadly spoke, as the blonde seemed a little embarrassed yet confused. "I've been vomiting up flower petals for weeks now... I don't understand what's going on." She confessed.

Maeve felt guilt rise in her chest, realising that Elena didn't understand this disease, and she was going to have to be the one to explain it to her.

"Lena, you're suffering from Hanahaki." The redhead hesitantly said, as Elena raised an eyebrow. "What is that?" She asked.

"It's an illness born from unrequited love." Maeve explained, as Elena seemed more confused. "Why would I have it? Jenni and I love eachother... there's nothing unrequited about it."

Maeve's face fell, "Maybe... Jenni doesn't realise that yet..." Elena then frowned, "Are you saying that Jenni doesn't love me?"

"Lena, I don't know, but I have seen this all before." Maeve replied, as Elena's expression faltered. "My father, Antonio Diaz was in love with my mum, Ophelia Lopez. My mum is aromatic so obviously the love wasn't requited, and one day my dad just started vomiting flower petals." She began to explain.

"He didn't want surgery to fix the disease because it meant his feelings for Ophelia wound be taken away too." Maeve sighed, as Elena asked with reluctance, "So what happened to him? Did it go away?"

The fox sadly shook her head. "The disease worsened. He began vomiting up entire flowers and eventually, the flowers filled his lungs and he suffocated on them."

"He died?" Elena asked, her eyes widening as Maeve sadly nodded.

The Lightbourne's shoulders sunk. Jenni didn't love her in the way she loved Jenni, and her only way to fix this disease was to have surgery done and lose her feelings towards the Opal, or for Jenni to requite these feelings.

But that was unlikely...

Jenni didn't realise it yet, but she was falling for Ugine, which left Elena with a tough decision.

"I... I don't know what to do Maeve, I love Jenni." Elena admitted, tears filling her eyes. "Jenni is the person I want to get married to and spend the rest of my life with."

Maeve nodded sadly, "I know, I'm sorry Elena. This is so horrible." She confessed, wishing she could do something to help her childhood friend.

It was then, the door to the bathroom swung open, and Jenni stepped inside. The wolf didn't want to admit it, but while trying to find her girlfriend she had walked into a few wrong rooms before finally finding her.

"Elena! Babe, are you okay?" Jenni asked, concern filling her face before she rushed over to Elena. The blunette hugged the cat faunus, as Elena placed her arms around Jenni and hugged her back.

"I'm okay, I think I just had too much to drink." Elena lied, as Jenni laughed lightly. A small, sad smile formed on Elena's lips, wishing everything could remain as it was.

I like the idea of keeping this open ended... will Jenni love Elena back? Or will Elena get surgery done and lose her feelings for Jenni? That's up to you.
