Sharp cracks sounded throughout the forest.
Thump, thump, thump, thump.
Brinley's heartbeat was irregular as she ran. As she'd walked the radio had slowly died out until she knew that Raven would no longer receive any communication from her. She'd shoved it into her pack and continued towards Mount Weather, her journey continuing on as expected.
What she hadn't expected was the reapers to be out so early, and so soon.
She'd tried to hide, being caught wasn't part of her plan, but one of the disfigured forms had noticed her, chasing after her with guttural growls escaping his lips. He was fast, much, much faster than Brinley had anticipated him being, and he was gaining on her quickly.
'Fuck off!' Brinley cursed as she ran; zig zagging around the trees in the hopes of losing the reaper tailing her.
No luck.
Another reaper appeared, blocking her immediate path. He lunged at her, successfully catching her in a vice like grip. Brinley slashed at him with the knife she held tightly in her hand, but the reaper didn't even seem to feel her attack, bashing a large rock against her head to knock her out.
'Motherfucker.' Brinley slurred as her legs gave out and her eyes closed.
*****
Brinley came to with a splitting headache. From what she could gather through blurry eyes was that she was slung over a reapers shoulder like a rag doll, and already they were inside the tunnels connected to Mount Weather.
Brinley's heart pounded against her chest and she prayed that the reaper didn't notice any change. She'd seen what they did to their captives and she felt nauseous at the thought. This was a situation that Brinley never imagined herself in.
She tried to force herself, to focus, to come up with some sort of plan...
But she was given no time as she was tossed onto the group, the reaper leering down at her in delight.
She had no other option; Brinley screamed.
The reaper jumped on top of her, pinning her down with his entire weight. Brinley tried to kick, punch, bite and claw at the man as much as possible, tears gathering in her eyes as she realised she was over powered.
A high pitched noise bounced off the rock walls as the reaper pinning her down and those surrounding them, their own captives lined up on a log, backed away in fear, covering their ears and dropping to their knees obediently.
'Get back! Get back!'
Two men in mount weather clothing appeared, faces covered in protective masks. Brinley knew that this was her chance to get inside and despite the shaking of her body and the erratic beating of her heart Brinley rolled onto her side, covering her face.
'Not a bad selection here. Tsing will be pleased. Should we call her?' Through her lashes Brinley watched as one of the men began injecting the reapers with a red substance in a needle.
'We... oh jesus christ, another one?' Brinley felt a boot nudge her harshly. 'That's the third girl this week.'
'Is this one still alive?' The second man sounded unconcerned, almost bored even.
'I don't know, I doubt it. These-'
Brinley could hear the first man coming closer as he leant down to inspect her, and when she felt he was close enough her eyes snapped open as she reached up and pulled off the mask that was keeping him alive. The effect was instantaneous as burns formed over his skin, his cries turning into on final gasp before he fell over dead.
Brinley heard a gun click and she threw herself onto the ground, her hand finding the frequency emitter they had been using to control the reapers. Two more bullets were fired at her, narrowly missing before she reached the man and grabbed the end of his gun aiming it upwards, he tried to fire but a sharp click let both of them know that he was out of bullets. A swift kick to the stomach loosened the man's grip on the gun, giving Brinley time to pull his mask off and snatch the weapon from his hand as he struggled to breathe and immediately began to die.
Brinley was sore, her head pounding as she panted with a mix of adrenaline and exertion, but she started the frequency emitter up again, keeping the reapers back while she searched for a security pass. It didn't take her long to find one, and after a brief look through the window on the door, Brinley slipped back inside Mount Weather.
Her idea hadn't worked, but it didn't matter; she was in.
*****
'Clarke. If I'm gonna pull this off, I need you to buy me some time. It won't be long before they realise I don't belong here and if that happens...'
Bellamy was both relieved and sickened. With Maya's help, he'd managed to get in contact with Clarke but to do so he'd had to end a life. The image of Lovejoy's son smiling up at him, talking about his father with admiration wouldn't leave Bellamy's mind. He'd done what he had to in order to get inside, but in doing that he had left a child fatherless, and made a woman a widow.
Bellamy hated himself, but he'd rather carry the crushing guilt than let anyone else feel the way he did.
'That can't happen. I'll come up with something.' Clarke sounded determined as her voice filtered through the radio.
'Come up with it quick.'
'Copy that, and Bellamy?' Clarke hesitated for a moment.
'Yeah?'
'You came through. I knew you would.'
A small smile graced Bellamy's face. 'All I've done is not get killed.'
'Keep doing that.' Clarke's voice filled with humour.
Bellamy waited for a moment, until another voice came through the radio. 'Bellamy.'
'Raven.' The two familiar voices gave him comfort.
'Is there any way you can reach the others?'
Bellamy looked at Maya who shook her head. 'Not right now, not right away.' Maya frowned.
'I can't get to them right now. I need to scope out the place first, see what I can find.'
'Do that. We need to disable the acid fog, and soon.' Raven sounded tense as she spoke and she knew it. She'd lost communication with Brinley and the guilt was eating her up, no one but her knew where she was going and what her intentions were – even Clarke and Octavia were yet to realise that Brinley was missing.
Almost as if Bellamy could hear her guilty thoughts, he spoke again. 'How's Octavia?'
Raven swallowed. 'She's fine, she's helping wherever she can.'
Bellamy nodded to himself, the tension in his chest easing. 'Good. Can you do me a favour?'
Raven, relieved he hadn't asked about Brinley, answered eagerly. 'Yeah, sure.'
'I need to talk to Brinley, just for a few minutes. I'll be quick.'
Raven's heart sank.
Bellamy waited, receiving no reply. He glanced at Maya, who looked concerned. 'Raven? You there?'
'Yeah, yeah I'm here.' Raven swallowed. 'You can't talk to her right now Bellamy.'
'Why not?' He frowned. 'Raven?' Bellamy felt his heart rate pick up as a thought hit him. 'Raven where is she?'
'She left not long after you did.' Raven admitted after a short internal struggle. 'I couldn't make her stay.'
Bellamy tried to swallow down his anger at her confession. 'Well is she okay?'
'I... I lost contact with her a few hours ago, she usually checks in every half hour or so. I'm sorry Bellamy, I don't know what happened – or where she is.'
*****
Brinley cursed as the grounders noted her entrance, beginning to bang against the cages. At this rate someone would come to shut them up and discover her, and she couldn't have that.
Brinley entered the medical bay after making sure no one else was around. The beds were empty for once and for that she was thankful. Her eyes scanned the room for any storage space, immediately finding the security camera's – easily memorising their blind spots.
Just as Brinley was sure she knew where to go to not be caught, the door clicked open and someone entered the room. Brinley turned around, hiding her face from view as she cursed quietly.
'Oh! Hey, you scared me.' There was a moment of tense silence. 'Are you okay? Doctor Tsing isn't here.' A moment of silence passed. 'Hey, who-'
Brinley thought she recognised the voice, and praying she was right, she turned back around. 'Not gonna turn me in are you?'
Maya's eyes widened and she moved backwards but Brinley was surprised to see genuine relief there as well. 'Brinley, you're alive.'
'Apparently so. Are my friends-'
'Alive.' Maya confirmed. 'For now, they've locked them in the dorms. It won't be long until they start...' Maya trailed off.
Brinley swallowed. 'Mind helping me find some clean clothes? I'll stick out the way I am.'
Maya took in Brinley's dirt smudges face and torn clothing. 'Yeah, I'll get you some. Oh! Bellamy's here by the way.'
'Thank god.' Brinley visibly relaxed. 'Where is he?'
'Talking to... Raven? I think that's her name. '
'You just left him alone?' Brinley's expression tensed.
'He's dressed as a guard. He'll be fine. I had to do my routine check or it would look suspicious.'
'And when they look at the security camera's, you talking to yourself won't look suspicious?' Brinley raised an eyebrow.
Maya smiled, mischief lighting up her eyes. 'The camera over there is broken. They won't see me at all.'
Brinley looked at the girl in surprise before she laughed. 'You're full of surprises you know that right?'
Maya smiled. 'C'mon, let's get you some clothes.'
*****
'Okay we meet up with Bellamy, and then what? How are we gonna get Jasper and the others out of the dorms?'
'I don't know. Bellamy and Raven were trying to figure that out when I left.'
Brinley had changed into clean clothes after Maya had shoved her in a decontamination area that blasted her with water and chemicals, explaining that though the treatments were much stronger now, they still weren't perfect – not yet. Brinley had risked Maya's life by being in the medical bay and for that she felt guilty, but Maya waved her off with a smile.
'How much further until we get there?' Brinley questioned impatiently, tugging her baseball cap down over head, tucking most of her hair inside.
'Not long, I-'
'Shh.' Brinley stopped walking, as did Maya.
'Someone's coming.' Maya seemed panicked; looking for somewhere Brinley could hide. 'We can't let them find you.'
Brinley smiled grimly. 'Too late for that, there's no where we can go.'
'Brinley! I-'
'Hey! What are you doing?'
Brinley swallowed her nerves. 'Find Bellamy, tell him to not get distracted.' Her voice was low enough that Maya could catch it with ease – but the guard would have more trouble doing so.
'What are you-'
Brinley shoved Maya roughly away, the guard upon seeing this began running towards her, knowing she had no where to go.
'Well look what we have here, how did you get out?'
Brinley's arms were pinned behind her back, the guard holding her in place. Brinley's eyes found Maya's, nodding at her slightly.
'I found her wandering the halls. I don't think she was with the others when they were locked up.'
'You did well Maya. It was brave of you to approach her.
Brinley rolled her eyes and she saw Maya's lips twitch slightly.
'Where are you going to take her? I was surprised to find her, I thought this level had been cleared already?'
Though Maya's voice was innocent, what she was implying was clear. This guard would be the one to be punished if anyone found out Brinley was wandering the halls freely. The guard seemed to realise this because when he spoke his voice had taken on a harder edge.
'We'll just keep this between us, won't we?'
Maya nodded quickly. 'Sure. Just make sure no one realises she was ever gone.' Maya smiled brightly.
'Of course. You better get back to everyone else now.'
'Yeah I should.' Maya forced a smile and turned around, walking away quickly.
'Now you're going to make this nice and easy for me, aren't you? Otherwise I might just give you straight to Doctor Tsing and you don't want that, do you?'
Brinley reminded herself that knocking out the guard wouldn't do her any good, this might be her only chance to get to the rest of her friends and she'd be damned if she was going to pass up on the opportunity.
So she stayed silent and made no move to run away, figuring it would be better to play meek and unassuming incase anyone looked too closely and realised she was an intruder.
'Fellows, Jackson.'
'Found a missing one did you?' One of the two guards addressed her captor as they approached the dorm doors.
'Nah, this one was in medical, just escorting her back. That's not a problem is it?'
'Go ahead, the sooner they're all fit for harvesting the better, right?'
Brinley's stomach turned.
'Exactly.'
The two guards opened the doors and shoved Brinley inside, her body hitting the ground roughly. She looked at the guard who gave her a large smirk as he locked the doors behind her.
'Fucking assholes.' Brinley stood up, dusting off her jeans, yanking the cap off her head as she turned around.
The wary looks on her friends faces transformed to looks of shock as they took in her appearance.
'Brinley?' Jasper's was slack jawed as he stared at her.
'You didn't really think you could get rid of me, did you?'
Brinley was immediately jumped on by Jasper whose skinny arms squeezed her so tightly she couldn't breathe. 'Missed you too Jas.'
'I thought... We thought you were dead.'
'Well I'm not, as far as I know at least.'
Monty hugged Brinley tightly, and as soon as he released her Harper hugged her, looking pale and slightly sick – but alive thankfully.
Brinley's eyes caught Millers as she let go of Harper. 'What, no hug for me Nathan?'
'Screw you.' Miller laughed as he hugged her, a thought occurring to Brinley.
'Miller, your Dad's alive.'
Everyone seemed to freeze. 'What?' Miller gasped out.
'When we saw the Ark fall, there were some survivors. Your Dad, my Dad, and Clarke's Mum – they're alive Miller.'
Miller's answering smile was blinding.
'Brin, Jasper says he saw Bellamy.' Monty seemed hesitant to bring up the topic of Bellamy.
Brinley nodded. 'Bellamy's alive; he's inside the building somewhere. Maya's helping him. She's the only reason either of us were able to get inside as far as I can tell.'
Jasper flushed slightly at the mention of Maya and it didn't go unnoticed by Brinley who smiled at the obvious affection he had for the girl.
'What do you mean as far as you can tell? You and Bellamy came together, right?' Miller sounded confused.
'Not exactly.' Brinley shrugged.
'He doesn't know you're here?' Jasper was frowning.
'No, I mean Maya may have found him by now, but I don't know.' Brinley shook her head. 'Anyway, I need you to tell me everything you know. All of you.'
*****
Maya found Bellamy quickly, the news of Brinley's survival on the tip of her tongue.
'- walkie and an ear bud if possible-'
'Bellamy.'
'Hold on Raven.' Bellamy clicked the walkie. 'You're back. Everything okay?'
Maya nodded quickly and Bellamy noticed the quick rise and fall of her chest – She'd been running. 'You sure?'
'Yeah, you'll never guess who I found in medical.'
'What's going on?'
'Give me a minute Raven.' Bellamy looked back to Maya. 'Who?'
'Brinley, She's here.'
Bellamy's heart stopped, and then started again double time, pounding against his chest in a mixture of relief and fear. 'Where? Where is she, I need to-'
But Maya was already shaking her head. 'You can't see her. She told me to tell you not to get distracted.'
'Why the hell can't I see her-'
'Because she's in the dorm Bellamy. She found a way inside.' Maya bit her lip, stretching the truth slightly because Brinley hadn't been trying to find a way into the dorm; she'd been trying to get to Bellamy.
'Bellamy! What the hell is-'
'Brinley's here.' Bellamy choked out into the radio. 'She's in the dorm with the others.'
A sigh of relief came through the radio. 'Thank god. - In the dorm? how did she get in?'
'That's not important.' Bellamy shook his head, trying to focus less on Brinley and more on the task at hand, just as she'd asked. 'What's important is getting them out.'
*****
It didn't take long for Brinley to learn what the others had learnt. The President Wallace she'd met was no longer in charge and instead his psycho son was in charge – and that meant death to all of them if they didn't find a way out – and soon.
Brinley found herself leaning against Miller's bunk with nothing to do. It had been a few hours at least but all they could do was wait for Bellamy and Maya to come through.
And they would. Brinley had complete faith in them. In both of them.
'Hey.' Jasper sat down beside Brinley. 'I just wanted to apologise for what I said to you and Clarke... about being crazy.'
Brinley shook her head. 'It's fine Jasper. Already forgotten.'
'It's just – the way both of you were acting... watching you tear apart the dorm...'
'It was a realistic assumption Jasper; I don't blame you for thinking it. The whole point of me tearing the dorm apart was so they'd take me to medical where Clarke was – so we could find a way out.'
'You're one hell of an actress.' Jasper laughed.
'Damn straight I am.' Brinley grinned.
'I'm so glad you're okay Brin.'
'And I'm glad your okay, let's make sure it stays that way, yeah?'
Jasper snickered. 'It won't be long until they come in for someone again. We have to hide you from Tsing.'
'I'm not going to hide Jas, they'll realise I'm here eventually.'
'Guys! Guys, they're coming!'
Jasper and Brinley traded a look as they moved to stand with their friends, to Brinley's annoyance, Jasper, Monty and Miller surrounded her, hiding her from the guards immediate view. It became clear that they knew she wouldn't listen to their reasoning, instead planning amongst themselves so she was barricaded between them – unable to move without drawing unwanted attention to her friends.
'Here we go. Come on, like we talked about.' Jasper reminded everyone as the doors buzzed open and everyone linked arms.
Doctor Tsing walked in and Brinley could feel her blood boiling with hatred.
'This one.' Tsing pointed at a blonde girl Brinley knew was named Jessica. Jessica's face changed from determined to terrified as the guards began yelling.
All right move! Everyone now!' Brinley watched as Monty and Jasper were hit in the stomach with Batons as chaos erupted.
Jasper struck out, trying to hit one of the guards who shoved him towards a wall, holding him there for a moment. One of the guards struck Brinley who promptly kicked him backwards with enough force for him to land on the floor. The guard who had been holding Jasper was suddenly holding Brinley's arms, placing them behind her as she kicked out at him before she was pressed against the wall beside Jasper, who strangely hadn't moved.
'Stop fighting me.'
Brinley relaxed at the familiar voice, realising immediately why Jasper hadn't fought back harder.
'Bellamy.'
'How could you be so stupid, are you trying to get yourself killed?' Bellamy was clearly angry, his hands tightening around her wrists.
'I'm just trying to help my friends.' Brinley growled out in reply, trying to escape his tight grip.
'So am I, and I can't be distracted, wondering if you're okay while I'm doing that.' Bellamy shot back tensely.
'Then don't think about me.' Brinley growled out, feeling Bellamy's body press harder against her back.
'Easier said than done sweetheart.' Bellamy's hands let go of her wrists, travelling to the waistband of her jeans, tugging her shirt up slightly.
'What-'
Bellamy tucked a gun into the front of her jeans, adjusting her shirt again once he did so. 'Zip your jacket up. Talk to Jasper, he knows what's going on.'
'Hey! Everything okay over there?'
Bellamy looked at the guard who was staring at him. 'Yes Sir.'
Bellamy held Brinley against him for a moment longer before he shoved her towards Jasper, who caught her immediately. Brinley stayed with her body facing Jasper as she zipped up her jacket, much to Bellamy's relief.
Jessica's screams filled the room as she was dragged away from her friends who could do nothing to help her.
Bellamy glanced back at Brinley, something that didn't go unnoticed by the guard who had called him out before. 'Pretty little thing isn't she? Kinda makes you wish Dante had his way and we were integrating them into the gene pool. I'd love to spend a night with her.' The man laughed at his own words as he focused back on the task at hand.
Bellamy forced himself to retreat with the rest of the guards and not turn around to shoot the man straight through the skull.
*****
'Bellamy wants us to fight back?'
'Yes.' Brinley answered for what felt like the hundredth time. It had been a few hours and convincing everyone to fight after their first failure was harder than Brinley thought it would be. 'They're not just using our blood; they're killing us. It's a permanent solution to the transfusions.'
Jasper had relayed what Bellamy had told him the moment the guards had shut the door again, and now the two were answering whatever questions their group had for them. Some of them clutched some sort of makeshift weapon tightly, nervousness evident.
'We have one gun, and that might be enough to throw them off for us to take them out, but it's going to require teamwork. All of us have to work together if we want to survive. Think you can do that?'
Most of the group nodded. 'Good. Because I don't think we have much time.'
Brinley turned to Jasper, whispering quietly. 'Take the gun, shoot straight.'
'What? No, Brin-'
'Jasper, you've kept everyone in here alive. They listen to you, they trust you – take the gun.'
Jasper hesitated before taking the gun, linking arms with Monty and Harper, Miller on the opposite side of Monty all-standing in front of Brinley much to her annoyance. But Brinley trusted Jasper; he was calling the shots in here – not her.
'What's taking Bellamy so long?' Monty's voice shook.
'I don't know.' Jasper answered quietly.
'Maybe they caught him.' Miller chimed in.
'No. He'll figure a way out.' Brinley grit her teeth.
'He will.' Jasper agreed.
'It's already been four hours.' Monty hissed back. 'The guards will be back any second.'
'They're gonna take someone else.' Harper was staring at the door, Brinley could hear the fear in her voice.
'No.' Jasper denied. 'Listen to me, everyone, we stick to the plan. They're not taking anyone else out of this room without a fight.' The door buzzing interrupted Jaspers words. 'Get ready!'
Jasper had come far from the quirky boy she'd met on the dropship and Brinley made a mental note to tell him how proud she was of him as soon as this was all over.
Doctor Tsing walked in, looking down her nose at them. Brinley's eyes skipped through the guards, not finding Bellamy among them. Tsing's eyes searched the group and Brinley's stomach dropped as she watched her gaze stop on Monty. 'This one.'
'Yes Ma'am.'
'No! No! No!'
Monty was pulled away by the guards, but this enraged Jasper who pulled out a gun. 'Hey! Get your hands off him!'
Jasper shot the guard straight in the chest, but to Brinley's horror, the guards of Mount Weather found them as more of a threat than she assumed, as the bullet bounced off of the bulletproof vest he was wearing.
A fight broke out, Miller ended up on the floor, his face contorting in pain as kids were knocked out and down everywhere Brinley looked.
'Enough! Don't move!'
The Doctor looked frazzled. 'Take him instead.'
Jasper was lifted off of the ground, panic written across his face. 'No! No! No!'
'Don't you dare.' Brinley's voice was strong, rising above Jasper's panicked cries and Brinley could tell almost immediately that Tsing recognised her voice as she turned around.
'You! How did you get back in here?' The Doctor's eyes narrowed in hatred.
'Wouldn't you like to know? Turns out this place isn't as secure as you'd like to think. I got out... I got back in... I thought you were safe in here?'
Brinley's words rattled the doctor. 'Take her too.'
Brinley fought back but one glance at Miller stopped her. 'Try anything and this one dies.'
Miller had a gun to his head, his eyes wide and shiny.
'Search the rest, make sure there are no other weapons.' Doctor Tsing ordered.
Brinley stopped fighting, letting herself be dragged out of the door, a frightened Miller being the last thing she saw.
'As soon as we're in the lab, I want them prepped. We start immediately.'
'Copy that. Transporting assets, elevator, C.'
The doctor opened the elevator, but the guard holding Brinley started gasping. 'Something's wrong.'
Brinley watched in amazement as the doctor's skin covered with burns. 'Radiation! We need to get out of here.'
She reached for the walkie Brinley's guard held. 'Containment breach, level 5. Seal the whole floor.'
Jasper and Brinley looked at each other. 'Bellamy.' Jasper breathed.
'Get the others!' Brinley yelled to him.
'Let's go! This is our chance! Everybody move! Take the level! Monty get the camera! Miller, get their guns! Go!' Jasper began ordering people around the moment the doors were open as the containment breach alarm continued to sound.
Brinley watched the doctor climb into the elevator, a look of relief on her face. Brinley followed her stopping the doors from closing. 'Please, please let me go.'
'Sorry babe, no can do.' Brinley shrugged as Monty, Jasper, Miller and Harper appeared next to her, their faces showing no mercy.
'No, no you can't.' Tsing cried.
'I hope you know that you're incredibly special to us.' Jasper's voice held no sincerity, just mocking.
'No.'
The group watched at he Doctor's burns worsened until she keeled over, dead.
'Good riddance.' Brinley shrugged. 'C'mon, we have to hold the level, they'll be coming for us soon.'
The group could only hope that Bellamy got to them sooner.
