'They're bringing in the grounders!'

'How many of you are there?'

'We've got to get them to medical move! Move!'

Brinley's head was pounding and she was being roughly dragged across the ground, held tightly under her arms. She could see terrified faces staring back at her as she screamed every time she was moved.

'Wait!'

'Once the prisoner is secured-'

'She's not a prisoner, she's my daughter!'

Brinley forced her eyes opened, watching as Abby rushed towards Clarke, tears in her eyes. Clarke could hardly believe it; if Abby was alive did that mean...

'Clarke!' Abby's voice broke.

'Mum?' Clarke asked in disbelief as Brinley's vision and hearing began to disappear...

Tap

Tap Tap

Tap Tap Tap

Brinley must have passed out, because the next thing she knew, she was lying on a makeshift hospital bed in clean clothes, a familiar face hovering over her, their fingers tapping at a metal table.

'Fucking hell can you stop your incessant tapping... Jackson?'

'Hey.' Jackson smiled, the tapping ceasing.

'Never thought I'd see your ugly mug again.' Brinley laughed sleepily, groaning as her ribs protested at the movement.

Jackson laughed with her, pushing her back down gently. 'You love this ugly mug don't deny it.' He turned away from her briefly. 'Hey Abby, she's awake.'

'Abby?' Brinley questioned, sure that seeing Clarke's mother had been just a dream.

'Brinley! You brave, brave girl.' Abby hugged her fiercely as Clarke appeared behind her.

'What's the prognosis doc?' Brinley asked.

'You have three broken ribs, and we had to stitch your side up, but you'll live.'

Brinley nodded. 'It's good to see you Abby. If you're here, does that mean my Dad-'

Abby's smile slipped slightly. 'He went looking for you - all of you. He's trying to make peace with the grounders.'

Brinley's heart dropped. 'That's never going to happen. Not now Anya's dead. You have to call him back.'

'I know, Clarke told me everything.'

'You look better.' Brinley smiled at Clarke, changing the subject quickly.

'So do you. Hey, there's something I have to tell you.'

Brinley was instantly worried. 'What? You aren't going to die on me too are you?'

Clarke smiled, her eyes shining. 'No... actually... it's Finn and Bellamy. Brin, they made it.'

"What?' Brinley gasped out, her heart bashing against her chest in disbelief.

'They're alive, Brin. So are Raven and Murphy.'

'Where are they?' Brinley squeaked sitting up. 'I need to-'

'Whoa, slow down, you can't move too fast or you'll tear your stitches and slow your healing down. Honestly the two of you –'

'Ma'am!' A blonde woman appeared in the doorway, sounding breathless. 'Movement, in the north woods.'

'Grounders?' Abby was immediately on her feet, her Chancellors pin gleaming against her chest.

The blonde smiled softly. 'I don't think so.'

Clarke and Brinley both shrugged on their jackets and followed Abby despite both her and Jackson's warnings. As they exited the tent a familiar face greeted them with a relieved smile.

'Hi.' Clarke breathed.

'I've been waiting out here all night!' Clarke and Raven hugged each other before Brinley latched onto the brunette.

'I thought you were a goner.'

'So did I.' Raven laughed as she let Brinley go. 'Abby said you both needed sleep.'

'Raven, I...' Clarke glanced at Raven's leg.

'Sucks, but I'm dealing with it.' Raven shrugged.

A loud buzz signalled the gates were open and Brinley felt her heart jump.

'Bellamy.' Clarke breathed, looking to Raven for permission to run ahead.

'Octavia.' Brinley gasped out, seeing the familiar head of brunette hair beside Bellamy.

'Go, I'll catch up.' Raven smiled at the two girls.

Clarke took off running and Brinley went to do the same until a hand on her shoulder stopped her. 'Don't even think about it.'

'Jackson, c'mon.'

'Abby will have my head if I let you injure yourself again.'

'I'll fast walk.' Brinley smirked as she twisted out of Jackson's grip just in time to see Clarke hug Bellamy, and Bellamy hug her back, much to Brinley's surprise.

'There's something I never thought I'd see.' Octavia commented with a smirk, her eyes on the two leaders.

'Funny, I was just thinking the same thing.' Brinley commented casually as she came closer to the trio, Raven following.

Octavia's eyes shot to her immediately, her expression breaking into one of pure joy. 'Brin? Brinley! Oh my god!'

Octavia rushed at her and Brinley caught her friend, ignoring the pain it caused her as they squeezed each other tightly.

Bellamy had heard Octavia's cry and his eyes had shot open as Clarke released him, unable to believe the scene in front of him. Of course he'd hoped and prayed that she had survived – but seeing it with his own eyes was something else entirely.

'She was worried about you.' Clarke whispered to him, noticing his gaze. 'Don't let her tell you any differently.'

'It's so good to see you.' Octavia breathed.

'It's good to see you too, O.' Brinley smiled as Octavia pulled away. 'Grounder looks good on you.'

'Thanks.' Octavia smirked.

Brinley looked up, seeing Bellamy's eyes on her, and though her heart was pounding, Brinley couldn't stop the cocky smirk that made it's way to her lips. 'What? Didn't miss me too much did you, hot shot?'

Bellamy smirked as he stepped towards her. 'You have no idea, sweetheart.'

Brinley grinned at his response, throwing herself towards him and wrapping her arms around his neck just as Clarke had, while Bellamy's arms wound around her just as tightly. Brinley was acutely aware of Clarke, Raven, and Octavia - in fact, most of the camp's eyes were on them, but in that moment she truly didn't care what they were thinking, or whispering to each other behind their hands.

Because Bellamy was alive, and he was standing right in front of her.

'I thought you were dead.' Brinley whispered to him.

'I thought you were dead.' He shot back.

Brinley laughed. 'Looks like we were both wrong.' She smirked, even though he couldn't see.

'Yeah I guess we were.'

Octavia shifted slightly, sharing a look with Raven and Clarke. Even though the two were only hugging, there was something so profoundly intimate about the moment that the three almost felt the need to look away.

Ignoring their audience around them, Bellamy held Brinley's face gently, searching her eyes for any hesitation, and when he found none, he leant down and pressed his lips to hers in a short, sweet, kiss that left both of them wanting more.

Clarke and Raven, completely unaware of the moment the two had shared before the battle with the grounders, stared open mouthed and wide eyed at the scene in front of them, but Octavia was grinning, happiness for her brother and best friend shining in her eyes.

'Brinley Kane! What did I tell you about staying put! You'll never heal properly if you don't listen to Abby.' Jackson was exasperated.

'What happened?' Bellamy asked immediately, looking between Clarke and Jackson. 'What's wrong?'

'Nothing-' Brinley tried, rolling her eyes.

'Three broken ribs and a significant stab wound isn't nothing, Brin.' Clarke pointed out.

'Neither is a mild concussion or a bullet wound Clarke.' Brinley shot back.

Octavia stared at the two of them. 'What have you two been up to?'

'We'll explain later.' Brinley cast a wary glance to the guards who were listening intently.

'How many with you?' Bellamy asked Clarke, his arm winding around Brinley's waist.

Clarke and Brinley shared a look. 'None.' Clarke replied. 'Where's Finn?'

Bellamy's expression was grim. 'Looking for you.'

Clarke and Abby were arguing and Brinley was forcing herself to stay still and not attempt to steal a gun and go back to Mount Weather herself.

'I know you feel this is unfair, but our priority has to be with Chancellor Kane if there is any hope for peace.'

'If you wanted peace you shouldn't have killed the only grounder who was going to help us!'

'I can't do this.' Brinley muttered, looking to Bellamy who looked just as tense as Brinley turned to Abby. 'They don't know what they're up against Abby. They think they're safe in that place.'

'I'm sorry. The decisions been made.' Abby frowned.

'You're sorry? Finn and Murphy are out there looking for your daughter with guns you gave us and now she's home you're just gonna abandon them? If you can't spare the guards we know the terrain, we have a map we can do it ourselves.' Bellamy suggested.

Clarke was nodding.

But Abby shot her down. 'No absolutely not.'

'I'm going.' Brinley muttered to Bellamy as she went to leave. 'With her permission or not.'

'Mum-'

'I just got you back!'

'Abby! I'm sorry, we need you in medical.' Jackson interrupted sheepishly.

'You better go.' Clarke replied calmly.

Abby cast a suspicious look over the three. 'Byrne. No one leaves this camp.'

'Yes Ma'am.'

The guard who had been standing with Byrne stepped in front of Brinley, stopping her from leaving. Brinley stared at him, watching the way he shrunk away from her. Brinley let out a short laugh. 'Who recruited you? If you can't face an eighteen year old girl, how are you going to face the grounders?'

'Back away Brinley.' Byrne warned. It was only after Bellamy gave her arm a gentle tug that Brinley turned around and walked back towards Clarke.

Clarke looked between her two friends. 'We're gonna need guns.'

*****

'I scored you a couple extra clips.'

Brinley shot Raven a grateful smile. She'd sought out the girl, and after explaining what her, Bellamy and Clarke wanted to do, she eagerly sourced weapons and ammunition for them, wanting to help her friends in any way possible.

'My Mum's in surgery, and the team going after Kane just left, we should too.' Clarke appeared, looking determined.

'Did you find Octavia?' Bellamy questioned Clarke.

'No. I found you.' Octavia walked towards the group with narrowed eyes. 'I'm not letting you leave here without me.'

Brinley laughed to herself, having already forewarned Bellamy that Octavia would assume the worst when Bellamy didn't find her immediately.

'Octavia-' Clarke tried.

'Finn and Murphy are headed for Lincoln's village. I've been there, have you?' Octavia pointed to Bellamy and then Clarke. 'Has she?'

'You done?' Bellamy asked in amusement and Octavia shrugged as Clarke handed Bellamy a pack that he gave to Octavia.

'What's this?' Octavia sounded curious.

'Your pack.' Bellamy smirked at his sister. 'Lead the way.'

Octavia smirked and went to climb through the fence but Raven stopped her. 'Whoa, not so fast Pocahontas.' Raven tapped the wiring with one of her crutches and sparks flew followed by the unmistakable sizzle of electricity.

'I thought you said it was handled?' Clarke frowned.

'It is.' Raven assured her, lifting a walkie to her mouth. 'Shut her down, Wick.' A moment later she touched the fence again. 'Handled.'

They'd been walking in silence for hours, each one of them regularly scanning for any sight of grounders or mountain men.

Brinley's ribs were screaming in pain and yet she said nothing as she observed her friends. Clarke was determined, as always and Bellamy was both cautious and calculating, which was nothing out of the ordinary. It was Octavia that drew Brinley's eye the most. The further they got from Camp Jaha, and the closer they got to Lincoln's village, the more times Brinley caught the falter in Octavia's expression, the open vulnerability and grief, that was soon hidden by n indifferent mask.

Octavia had filled Brinley in on what had happened after she'd left the fight with Lincoln, and Brinley made a silent vow to Octavia that should they find Lincoln – she'd do anything she could to help him. He was the reason Octavia was alive, after all.

Eventually the sun began to set and Clarke suggested they set up camp for the night. Brinley agreed, hoping that the break would relieve some of the fire from her chest.

Brinley helped Octavia set up a small fire, something big enough to keep them warm but small enough to not draw a large amount of attention.

'Look at you, O. Sky girl turned grounder.' Brinley teased her friend as she blew air onto their fire, feeding the small flame until it eventually caught and grew.

'Don't you forget it.' Octavia smirked at her before lowering her voice and moving closer to Brinley. 'I still can't believe you have a thing for my brother.' Octavia faked a look of disgust and Brinley shoved her lightly.

'Shut up O.'

The four talked strategy and made plans for every situation they could think of until eventually their eyes grew heavy. Octavia was the first to fall asleep, followed by Clarke. Brinley didn't think she could sleep if she tried.

'Go to sleep Bellamy.' Brinley scolded as she watched him stare into the fire.

'How about you take your own advice sweetheart.'

Brinley rolled her eyes, pulling herself up into a sitting position again. 'Don't tell me what to do Blake.'

It was silent for a moment as Bellamy covertly watched Brinley, noting the way she seemed unable to keep still, constantly shifting her body.

'I shouldn't have let you come.' Bellamy broke the quiet silence.

'What?' Brinley frowned, staring at him in confusion.

'You're injured and in pain. I should have made you stay behind like any normal person would have.' Bellamy seemed angry with himself.

Brinley scoffed. 'Let me? Bellamy, there was no way I'd have stayed behind even if you wanted me to. You know that, right?'

Bellamy shook his head. 'That's the problem though isn't it. I could never make you stay behind because I'm selfish, and I want you here even if it means you'll be in danger.'

'Guess it's a good thing I don't care about danger then.' Brinley shrugged.

'I guess so.' Bellamy laughed quietly.

Brinley stared at the fire as she spoke. 'Human beings are inherently selfish creatures, Bellamy. All of us are selfish to some extent. While Clarke and I were in Mount Weather, I wanted you to walk through the dormitory doors even if it meant you being trapped in their with the rest of us, and it was so incredibly selfish of me to want that, to want to see you caged in just like me, to want to see you trapped and completely unable to escape. I knew you would have hated it, but I wanted it all the same.' Brinley admitted.

'I would have found a way out.' Bellamy smirked down at her, breaking the sombre mood that had settled.

'So not the point Bellamy!' Brinley slapped his arm with a smile.

'I understand what you're saying, but for the record, I'd rather have been locked in there with all of you than playing obedient prisoner for your Dad.'

Brinley snorted. 'I don't blame you.' And then she quietly added, 'Was he okay?'

Bellamy nodded. 'He was completely fine the last time I saw him.'

Brinley shifted again and Bellamy sighed, shuffling closer to her, wrapping an arm around her waist. Brinley took advantage of Bellamy's affection, leaning into him. 'The last time I saw you; a grounder was beating the life out of you. I didn't think I'd ever see you alive again.'

'The last time I saw you, you were being held back as the dropship doors closed, and when Finn and I came back to find all of you gone... I can't describe how that felt.'

'And yet somehow, we're both still here.' Brinley stared up at Bellamy for a second before she reached up, pulling him down so she could kiss him. The two only pulled away as they heard Clarke shift beside Brinley.

'Did you two get any sleep?' Clarke yawned, seemingly oblivious to what she had interrupted.

Brinley bit her lip as Bellamy answered. 'I'll sleep when we find Finn.'

Clarke nodded, eyes downcast.

'You haven't seen him Clarke. Losing you, the others, the war, it changed him. He executed the grounder that drew us the map.' Bellamy shook his head as Brinley pursed her lips. 'Pulled the trigger without even blinking and walked away.'

'That doesn't sound like Finn.' Clarke frowned.

'No, it doesn't.' Bellamy agreed. 'I saw what he was capable of and still I let him go with Murphy and two automatic rifles.'

'I'm sure that had to be done.' Clarke nodded in understanding.

'When we got back to the dropship and no one was there, we assumed it was the grounders.'

'Of course you did. You couldn't have known it was the mountain men. No one could have.'

Bellamy sucked in a sharp breath. 'How long until chocolate cake turns into being hung upside down and drained for their blood?' Bellamy questioned though both girls knew he didn't really expect an answer.

'I don't know.' Clarke answered anyway. 'But we don't have much time.'

'Okay. First we find Finn, then our people in Mount Weather.'

'And Lincoln.' A sleepy Octavia added quietly. 'Think we've slept long enough.'

The four put out their fire, and reorganised their packs, using the still darkened sky as an advantage. Eventually Brinley, Clarke and Bellamy found themselves behind Octavia, who trekked with practiced footfalls towards the village where, hopefully, Finn and Murphy were still waiting in the shadows.

The sky began to gradually get lighter until bright morning light blazed through the thick canopy of green looming over their heads.

'We have to be close, surely?' Brinley asked as they followed Octavia down a slope, landing on the soft dirt.

'This is it.' Bellamy glanced at the map in his hand. 'Which way to the village?'

Bellamy waited expectantly but both Brinley and Clarke could see that something was wrong with Octavia, who was staring at the looming statue forlornly.

'O?' Bellamy had caught on to Octavia's sudden mood change.

'The reapers came from there.' Octavia used her sword to point towards the statue as her expression shattered, revealing the pain underneath. Bellamy reached for his sister, who turned to him with tears in her eyes.

'I couldn't save him Bell.' She sobbed. 'I couldn't save him.'

'It's okay, It's okay.' Bellamy held his sister tightly as she cried. Brinley pulled Clarke further away, giving the siblings some space.

'You holding up okay?' Clarke whispered to Brinley quietly.

'I'm fine. Are you? Holding up okay, I mean.'

'Yeah, yeah I'm totally fine. Can I see your stitches?'

Brinley frowned. 'Why?'

'They have to be kept clean and dry or you risk getting an infection.'

Brinley rolled her eyes as she tugged up the side of her shirt. 'You're just like your bloody mother Clarke.'

Clarke ignored the comment, peeling back the dressing on the wound. 'We need to change this.'

'It can wait.' Brinley complained.

'No Brin, it can't. C'mon. Sit.' Clarke pointed to a tree stump and Brinley sat down with a pout.

Octavia was wiping her eyes and walking towards them, Bellamy close behind. 'You ready to go?'

'Yup –'

'No. I have to fix Brinley up considering she won't do it herself.'

'Screw you Clarke. Have you taken care of yourself since we left?'

'Yeah I have.' Clarke flashed a shiny new bandage on the graze left from the bullet and Brinley cursed.

'Of course you have.'

Clarke lifted Brinley's shirt gently. 'Jesus Brin, I didn't realise it was this bad.'

'Your Mum sewed me up good, c'mon Griffin we don't have all day.'

'Let me see.' Octavia moved closer her expression of curiosity turning to one of disgust. 'Ouch.'

Clarke was being far too gentle and slow for Brinley's liking and Brinley could see Bellamy moving forward to see what all the fuss was about. Gritting her teeth, Brinley tore off the old bandage, replacing it with the new just as Bellamy got close enough to see. 'There, done. Can we go now?'

*****

They hadn't been walking long when the sound of gunfire and screaming filled the air.

'Finn.' Clarke breathed as she took off running, easily following the loud sounds coming from in front of them.

As they broke through the tree's, the gravity of what they were seeing hit them.

Grounders rounded into a pen like animals, Murphy looking distressed and horrified, and worst of all was Finn, surrounded by dying men, women and children, gun still raised in their direction with shock written across his features.

Octavia ran to one of the fallen and Clarke, Bellamy and Brinley followed wearing various expressions of disgust at the picture of suffering Finn had perfectly orchestrated.

Murphy caught sight of Brinley and though he would never admit it, a crushing weight was lifted off of his shoulders and everything seemed okay in the world. He sent her a small smile, unsure of how she would react considering their last meeting had been explosive to say the least.

Brinley, ignoring Clarke and Finn's awkward exchange, stepped forward and punched Murphy in the arm with all of her strength. 'That's for being a dick.'

Murphy cursed, holding his arm. 'Noted.'

Brinley hugged her friend tightly. 'I'm glad you're alive Murphy.'

'Of course you are. Your life would be exceptionally boring without me in it.'

Brinley gave him a warning look as she released him.

'Kidding. Missed you too, jeez.' He stepped closer to her. 'And for the record, I tried to stop him.'

'I found you.'

Brinley turned to stare at Finn as Clarke backed away from him, seemingly unable to form words as her eyes darted from body, to body.

Brinley's expression was scary as she spoke. 'No Finn, we found you.'
