*****
'You want to go back in there? You're joking right?'

Bellamy looked grim. 'No. I have to get them out.'

Brinley sighed; though even she had to admit that leaving the grounder army locked in their cages any longer was cruel. She was constantly worrying about her friends and the people hiding them, their brief reprieve from any more death wasn't going to last.

Bellamy and Brinley had spent the last half hour carefully planning their grounder rescue plan, trying to ignore the burning of their lungs from smoke inhalation, and the way their bodies protested as they moved.

Brinley ushered Bellamy ahead of her as they entered the small vent that would lead them right to the room of cages, a place Brinley had hoped she'd never have to enter again.

Bellamy helped Brinley out of the vent, noting the flashes of pain that crossed her face on occasion. Together the two scoped the room, and upon seeing no immediate threat they began moving.

Brinley watched recognition flood Bellamy's face as he put his gun away, pulling out a set of stolen keys. 'Get up; it's time to go. I told you I'd come back for you.'

The grounder girl looked dazed as Bellamy helped her out of her prison. 'Our people are marching on Mount Weather right now.'

Bellamy opened another cage only to be shoved back. 'Hey it's okay! I'm getting you out!'

'Hey, slow down. They just bled him.' The grounder girl explained, frowning at the younger boy sitting limply against the cage.

'Listen to me, there's an army inside this room, and I need you to help me get them ready to fight, can you do that?'

The girl inhaled, nodding quickly.

'Good. Start with him.'

Brinley hung back, unable to do much without a set of keys. As more grounders were released the noise level began to rise, setting Brinley's teeth on edge. 'Bell, we have to make them shut up!'

Bellamy nodded, turning to the grounder. 'Too much noise!'

The woman yelled in her native tongue and immediately the noise level dropped. She turned to Bellamy, eyeing Brinley warily. 'Okay, how do we do this?'

'There's an army outside going for the main door, when they get it open all hell will break loose. That is the signal for my friends to come here and then-'

Bellamy was cut off at a sound over the Mountain's P.A system.

'My fellow citizens, this is your president speaking. I have news to share with you, that will change all of our lives forever.'

'No.' Brinley breathed, a sense of dread settling in her stomach as the implications of the president's smug words set in.

'For ninety-seven years, Mount Weather has been our home. It has kept us alive, but it has also kept us captive. Most of us have made peace with what we've had to do to survive. We've done these things for one reason, so that our people could one day return to the ground. That day is today.'

'Son of a bitch.' Brinley choked out shakily, as Bellamy reached for her hand.

'He's going public.'

'Before my friend Lorelai Tsing was murdered, by the outsiders still at large in this mountain, she found a cure. It was in their bone marrow-'

Bellamy and Brinley exchanged a grim look before Bellamy handed over the keys, quickly explaining what he and Brinley had already figured out.

'Do you think they'll turn them in?' Brinley questioned as she crept cautiously through the halls.

'I don't know. What I do know is that we need to find them, now.'

*****

'If you want her you've gotta go through me.'

'Don't make me do this Vincent.'

'Sorry Paul.'

Brinley heard Bellamy's sharp intake of breath as he squeezed down on the trigger of his gun, and the guard holding her friends prisoner dropped dead.

Vincent tugged the vent cover off just as Miller strangled the second guard using his handcuffs.

'Hey, good job, Thank you.' Bellamy nodded to Vincent who smiled back quickly.

'Miller, you okay?'

'Better than him.' Miller looked down in disgust at the guard on the ground by his feet.

'You need to get everyone into the harvest chamber, you'll be safer there.'

'Safe in the harvest chamber?' Jasper questioned doubtfully.

'Just trust me.'

Brinley stepped away from Bellamy, making her way to Miller first, latching onto him tightly.

Miller hugged her back just as tight before he frowned at her. 'The hell happened to you?'

'Things got a little hot.' Brinley answered cryptically.

Miller raised an eyebrow and Brinley flushed, smacking his arm. 'Get that smirk off of your face Nathan.'

Before Brinley knew it, Bellamy and Jasper were ushering her along with them, and after a moment, Maya squared her shoulders and decided to go with their group as well.

'Your mother would be so proud of you. I'll see you soon. Be careful.'

'You too.'

Brinley watched as Maya hugged her Father tightly, both of their faces full of emotion as they released each other.

Brinley quietly made her way to Maya's side, looking at Vincent. 'I'll take care of her.'

Vincent nodded, watching as Brinley tugged Maya gently away. Brinley ushered Jasper ahead, wanting to talk to Maya for a moment.

'Why are you doing this?' Brinley frowned at the girl, confusion on her face.

'Doing what?' Maya was confused now, lowering her voice to match Brinley's tone as they walked.

'Helping us. I don't mean to sound harsh but... even if this all goes to plan and Cage let's us leave – what are you going to do?'

To her credit, Maya didn't bat an eyelash at Brinley's somewhat blunt question. 'If I die, at least I'll die doing what's right. I'm not saying that I want to die... but-'

'But you've already accepted the possibility of it happening.'

Maya looked to Brinley questioningly, and after a moment Brinley nodded, both girls overcome with a new sense of understanding and acceptance.

'I have to admit, you used to terrify me.'

Brinley laughed quietly. 'I was a bitch to you, and you didn't deserve it. I'm sorry.'

Maya shook her head. 'Don't be. If I was in your position, I'd probably be the same.'

Brinley doubted that kind and caring Maya had a bad bone in her body but she smiled anyway, calling Jasper's name softly, giving Maya one last smile.

'What was that all about?' Bellamy questioned as Brinley reached him.

'Girl talk.' Brinley shrugged. 'Which level are we hitting first?'

*****

Eventually, the four reached their final group to recover from the rebels, but it seemed that Maya and Jasper chose that moment to have a heart to heart, Brinley and Bellamy backed off out of respect for their privacy, but a sudden gunshot had them running towards the area, Bellamy cautioning them to take it slow, and be ready for anything.

Without anything needing to be said, the three shielded Maya with their bodies, something that didn't go unnoticed by Maya who felt a lump rise in her throat at their kindness towards her.

As they entered the empty corridor, they were met with the grisly sight of a body, chunks of the skull missing, lying messily on the floor.

'It's Mrs Ryan.' Maya identified her quickly, looking slightly green at the sight.

'She was hiding the last twelve.'

'Where'd they take them?' Jasper questioned, gun held high.

'It's gotta be level five.'

Jasper immediately moved, Bellamy rushing to block his path. 'No.'

'Get out of my way.' Jasper sounded agitated, and honestly, Brinley couldn't blame him.

'Every person inside this mountain is on level five, every soldier.' Bellamy looked to Maya. 'Tell him.'

'Jasper's right.' Maya surprised both Brinley and Bellamy, and by the expression on his face – Jasper too. 'After the lockdown it'll be almost impossible to get them out. It's now or never.'

Brinley sighed, looking to Bellamy. 'They have a point.'

Bellamy grudgingly agreed. 'Alright. But how do we even get-'

There was a loud creak and Brinley reflexively shoved Maya behind her as she clicked her gun into place, almost immediately lowering it at the familiar face appearing in the darkened area.

'Monty.' Jasper breathed in relief before it changed to concern at the lack of reaction from his friend.

'What is it? What's wrong?'

Monty looked at his friends, a frightened and regretful glint in his eye. 'They know about the grounders. That's why I hid. I didn't do anything to save the others. I – I let them kill Mrs Ryan.' Monty drew in a shaky breath, locking eyes with Brinley who immediately went to his side in a show of support.

'What do you mean they know about the grounders?'

'It was on a soldiers walkie. They're going for the harvest chamber.'

'If they take it, we lose everyone.' Bellamy's voice was uncharacteristically shaky as the gravity of their situation settled like a lead weight on his shoulders.

'Come on. We have to go.'

*****

Clarke felt her heart sink as Lexa walked towards her, Emerson by her side. 'What is this?'

'Hey look! They're coming out!'

Clarke's tired eyes found Lincoln, watching as the doors to Mount Weather opened and grounders began filing out one by one, looking haggard and drained, but alive, bodies wrapped in thick blankets, not dissimilar to the ones her, Bellamy and Brinley had found in the bunker what felt like forever ago.

'They're surrendering?' Clarke stared at Lexa, hoping that the girl hadn't bought all her fears surrounding the mission and their truce to life.

'Not quite.' Emerson looked incredibly smug as he glanced between Clarke and Lexa, who hadn't removed her eyes from the blonde's face as realisation dawned.

'What did you do?'

'What you would have done. Saved my people.'

'Where are my people?' Clarke's heart was pounding against her chest.

'I'm sorry Clarke. They weren't part of the deal.' Lexa didn't sound sorry at all, and it ignited a simmering rage in Clarke, who couldn't believe she had let herself be fooled by a pretty face and empty promises.

Lexa cut Emerson's binds, the soldier still wearing the same smug expression. 'You made the right choice commander.'

'What is this?' Lincoln could see the tension on the girls' faces as well as the shaking of Clarke's hands and the moisture in her eyes.

'Your Commander has made a deal.'

'What about the prisoners from the Ark?' Lincoln's mind went to Bellamy, knowing Octavia wouldn't dare leave her brother inside the Mountain without a fight.

'They'll all be killed. But you don't care about that, do you?'

'I do care, Clarke.' Clarke seemed to have hit a nerve. 'But I made this choice with my head, not my heart. The duty to protect my people comes first.'

'Please don't do this.'

'I'm sorry Clarke.'

'Commander, not like this, let us fight.' Lincoln pleaded lowly.

'No.' Lexa's voice was hard. 'The deal is done.'

The horn for retreat sounded and it only took seconds before Lexa's army began leaving in droves. Lexa stared at Lincoln. 'You too. All our people withdraw. Those are the terms.'

'They'll be slaughtered. Let me help them.'

Clarke could only watch as Lincoln was knocked out and dragged away on Lexa's orders. Lexa looked at Clarke and for the first time since their conversation began, Lexa's face betrayed her true emotions. 'May we meet again.'

'Brinley was right. I should never have trusted you.'

Lexa stared at her for a moment longer before she turned, retreating with the rest of her people.

And then she was gone, and Clarke was left with a terrible sense of dread and loss, her heart constricting painfully in her chest as she realised that in trusting Lexa, she might have just signed her friends' death sentences.

*****

Brinley followed Bellamy into the harvest chamber, her heart jumping into her throat at the sight of a body crumpled on the floor. She recognised the face and her heart gave a painful lurch as she tried to stop Maya from coming any further into the room.

But Maya seemed to realise Brinley was hiding something, side stepping her, her eyes landing on her fathers form, tears immediately spilling from her eyes and down her pale cheeks. 'No! No!'

Brinley swallowed and tore her eyes away from a distraught Maya and Jasper comforting her with Monty not far behind, immediately glancing at Bellamy, who was latched onto one of the cages with a steel grip, his forehead pressed against the cool metal.

'Bellamy?'

'I promised I'd get them out. I don't understand how-'

'Hey stop it, we've still got time okay? Don't give up now.' Bellamy didn't speak and Brinley added, 'I can't do this on my own, Bell.'

Bellamy's shoulders slumped slightly as he glanced at her. 'You won't have to. Not as long as I'm still breathing.'

Brinley's heart fluttered at his words, and she opened her mouth to say something, only to freeze.

Bellamy frowned. 'Brin-'

'Shh!' Brinley listened for a moment before she turned towards Jasper, Monty and Maya. 'Get her into a suit, there's someone out there.'

Brinley raised her gun, Bellamy mimicking her actions as they crept towards the familiar exit door, hearing raised voices behind it. One glance as Maya confirmed she would be safe from exposure as Bellamy pulled out a stolen key card.

Bellamy unlocked the door and pushed it open with his weapon raised only to lower it as Octavia and Clarke came into view, matching expressions of relief on their faces.

'Bellamy!' Octavia embraced her brother tightly, and Brinley noted the war paint staining her skin.

'Brin!' Clarke's sounded choked up as she rushed at her friend, holding her tightly. 'Don't even run off like that again.'

'I make no promises.' Brinley smirked.

'I knew it, you two are too scrawny to drill.' Octavia joked as she hugged Monty and Jasper who had come to see what all the fuss was about.

But Octavia backed away from the two as Maya, dressed in a hazmat suit, came into view.

'Hey, it's okay, she's with us.' Brinley stepped between Maya and Octavia, the latter stared at her for a moment before she reached out and landed a solid punch on Brinley's arm. 'Hey!'

'That's for leaving me! Don't do that again, okay?'

'Jesus who taught you to punch like that?' Brinley feigned pain before she grinned as she hugged Octavia briefly. 'Good to see you too, O.'

'Where's your army?' Bellamy questioned Clarke just as Brinley and Octavia released each other.

'Gone. Just like yours.' Clarke's voice was grim.

'Gone? What do you mean gone, Clarke? The hell happened out there?' Brinley frowned at the vagueness of Clarke's answer.

Clarke averted her eyes from Brinley's face. 'Lexa sounded a retreat. She agreed to a truce with Mount Weather.'

'Then why the hell are we still here?' Bellamy sounded suspicious.

'...Because her truce didn't include us.' Brinley realised. 'I fucking warned you not to trust her Clarke! I-'

'Brinley, I know. You were right, I should have listened.' Clarke sighed, looking to Bellamy again. 'Please tell me you have a plan.'

'Not really. We need to talk to Dante. Maya says he's in quarantine-'

'Clarke!'

Jasper and Monty embraced Clarke, and Brinley watched as Clarke looked to Maya, mouthing a thank you to the dark haired girl who smiled gently at the blonde, despite the tear tracks still marring her cheeks.

Maya's suit began beeping and Jasper hurried over, turning pale as he looked at the gage. 'Thirty minutes? We just changed it that can't be right...shh...um...' Jasper looked to Clarke desperately. 'It's her last tank.'

'Hey, we'll find you another one.' Clarke cleared her throat, sounding slightly stronger than she had a moment ago.

'All the supplemental oxygen is on level five –'

'- Then we have to get you to level five.'

'Five isn't safe for any of us-'

'We'll take the trash chute in again, it'll work.'

'To get in, maybe. Maya's right, every soldier in this mountain is there. We'll never make it out.'

'We can do this. We'll split up.' Jasper suggested and to Brinley's surprise, Octavia agreed.

'Okay. You guys go for Dante. We'll help Maya.'

Brinley didn't even have time to question which group she was going with before Clarke was dragging her along. The group kept quiet, encountering no soldiers on the way. Dante was sitting on his bed in the overly white room, and just like the first time she'd seen him, Brinley felt revulsion creep down over her spine.

Dante looked surprised as they entered the room. 'Hello, Clarke. Brinley.'

'It's okay. I took out the camera from the junction box in the hall. We can talk freely.' Monty explained.

'No one's watching anyway. Thanks to you they're all on level five.'

'You're not.' Clarke noted.

'No, I'm not.'

'Please, we don't have much time. We need a way to get our people out of this mountain without killing everyone.' Bellamy was blunt and straight to the point.

Brinley laughed at the silence that followed. 'He's not gonna help us...' She turned to the former president. 'Are you?'

'You cut the power, risking the lives of everyone in this mountain. My people, even the ones who helped you.' Dante spat viciously.

'We knew they'd be safe on level five. We made sure not to destroy the turbines so you could repair them. We're the good guys here, not you!' Clarke was in Dante's face now, and Brinley could see she believed the words she was saying.

Brinley didn't. In her short life she'd come to realise that things weren't simple; that good and evil weren't black and white. In reality, everything came in varying shades of grey. More of one thing, less of the other, but never strictly bad nor good, instead sitting somewhere in between.

She knew that Clarke was going to have to find that out the hard way.

'Tell me, if we released your people and theirs, what would have happened to mine?'

Clarke ignored the question, turning to Monty. 'Can you get us into the command centre? We need to see what's happening on level five.'

'No problem.' Monty confirmed.

'Let's go.' Bellamy grabbed Dante's arm. 'You're going to help us whether you like it or not.'

After a few tense moments, Dante broke the silence. 'You won't find anyone here. Everyone's on level five, you know that.'

'Shut up.' Brinley's tone was clipped and cold.

'Miss Kane, I do have to say I'm surprised that you came back here.'

'Why wouldn't I come back to help my friends?'

'Well considering your mental state the last time I saw you, I expected a vastly different outcome.'

Brinley knew he was baiting her but she couldn't help but reply. 'You don't know what you're talking about.' She snapped, ignoring the glance Bellamy shot her way.

Dante looked smug. 'Ah, I see. You've kept your outburst in the dorm from your friends. That's not healthy you know, I'm sure Doctor Tsing would agree-'

'Doctor Tsing's dead. She can't agree or aid you with your twisted ideas anymore.' Brinley sneered cruelly, cutting off Dante's sentence.

Dante narrowed his eyes at the cruel reminder, glancing at Bellamy now. 'You two do seem close, so I wonder why Brinley here has failed to mention the attempt she made on her life-'

Brinley shoved Dante against the nearest wall, pressing her gun to his head. 'Shut your fucking mouth. If you think for a second that was genuine then – '

Brinley felt an arm wrap around her waist, as a handheld the barrel of her gun, tugging her backwards. 'Let me go! Let me go Bellamy!'

'Hey, hey, hey calm down. Brinley I need you to calm down, alright?'

Brinley shoved Bellamy away lightly, pointing at Dante who was being held by Monty and watched carefully by Clarke. 'Don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth.'

'I won't.' Bellamy promised. 'You need to cool down sweetheart.'

Brinley scoffed.

'I'm serious Brin, calm down.'

'Fine.' Brinley growled. 'I'll go help Octavia and Jasper.'

'That's not what I-' Bellamy sighed.

'You've got this under control, I won't be of any help here, and besides, Dante gives me the fucking creeps.' Brinley shrugged, smiling slightly at Bellamy as she shoved her anger to the back of her mind for the moment.

Bellamy snickered lightly before he nodded. 'Be careful, okay?'

'You too, hot shot.' Brinley reached up, kissing Bellamy's cheek lightly. Brinley smiled at Monty and Clarke before she turned to stare at Dante, sending him a sweet smile as she flipped him off before she turned and made her way back towards Octavia and Jasper.

Bellamy watched her go for a moment before he turned back to the situation at hand. 'Alright, you ready?'

*****

Brinley hurried towards the area she'd last seen Jasper, Octavia and Maya, hoping that they hadn't moved too far into the main area of level five before she could reach them. Dante had been right about no one watching, they'd been rather lucky with the inattention –

- Up until now at least.

*****

'Why are you stopping?' Clarke asked hopelessly, not seeing any other option other than the one Monty was working on.

'Because I did it. All we have to do is pull this.' Monty gulped. 'Hatches and vents will open and the scrubbers reverse pulling in outside air.'

*****

'Well look what we have here.'

Brinley cursed, eyeing the lone soldier in front of her, watching as a large grin spread across his face.

'Drop your weapon.'

'That's real cute.' The man smirked. 'Why don't you put the gun down and we can have a little chat?' The man stalked forwards further, his finger on the trigger of his gun.

Brinley recognised the glint in his eyes and the expression on his face and her blood turned to ice, her heart rate increasing. 'Stay the fuck away from me!'

'Come on pretty girl, you gonna shoot me? I promise I'll be much nicer than Cage would be with the drill.'

'I'd rather the drill.' Brinley squeezed the trigger on her gun, but the guard was too quick, moving out of the way of the bullet at the last second. Brinley's mouth went dry.

'You bitch! I was trying to be nice!' The man's mood turned sour quickly, his face filled with a violent rage.

'Fuck you!' Brinley aimed and fired again, watching with satisfaction as the bullet landed in his shoulder, causing him to cry out in pain as he staggered and for a moment, Brinley thought that she'd already won.

But what she wasn't prepared for was his quick recovery as he squeezed the trigger of his own gun, giving Brinley no time to react.

Brinley felt the bullet pierce her stomach; pain screaming across her torso as her shirt quickly became wet with blood. She gasped, her free hand pressing against the wound shakily.

Brinley's knees gave way and when she looked up from the bullet hole in her torso, the soldier was far too close for comfort. Brinley aimed her gun but her hand was so shaky that the bullet missed him by a long shot. Another well placed bullet from the soldier and her gun went flying.

'Look at you, on your knees exactly where you should be.'

*****

'He's gonna blow the door!' Bellamy's heart was racing as he aimed his gun at the door.

'Clarke! We're out of time!' Monty stood up, still seeing the indecision on Clarke's face.

Clarke's gloved hand gripped the handle, her breathing coming out short and laboured, and beads of sweat began appearing on her forehead.

What do I do?

******

The man came closer, crouching down so he was almost eye level with her. 'Now how about-'

Brinley head-butted the man as hard as she could, feeling the resounding impact against her skull. The soldier was startled for a second before he smacked her upside the skull with his gun, dazing her for a moment.

When her vision cleared, Brinley realised her back was pressed against the cool floor, the soldier having pinned her down, placing his knees either side of her. Brinley let out a scream, kicking her legs and bashing her fists but all it took was a slight pressure against her stomach and Brinley's attention went to trying to cover the wound that was making her vulnerable.

Her hands were slick with blood, and she could feel stickiness on her head now, too. Tears were streaming down her cheeks as she continued to scream and curse at the top of her lungs.

And the soldier began to laugh.

*****

Monty pulled only the cameras up from the main areas of level five, eyes widening at the scenes unfolding before them.

They were losing.

Bellamy's eyes were quickly drawn to Octavia and Maya in the dining hall being pushed to the ground by soldiers, all of them holding guns.

'My sister, my responsibility.' Bellamy breathed quietly.

Clarke was already crying, know what she had to do. 'I have to save them.'

Bellamy's hand covered Clarke's on the lever. 'Together.'

And then they pulled.

*****

Brinley felt the soldier's hands begin to wander, and she fought him with all the strength she had left.

'You bitch! Just you-'

But a moment later his expression changed and suddenly he was choking, his skin was turning red and an alarm began to sound. The soldier began to sway, as Brinley's mind finally caught up to what was happening.

Brinley snatched the gun up from where the soldier had dropped it right at the moment the alarm sounded, and without another thought she pulled the trigger, spraying crimson across the white walls.

*****

Octavia's lower lip was still trembling as she unlocked Kane's handcuff's passing him the keys, for once allowing an adult to take charge.

Maya had died in Jasper's arms.

There had been children in that room.

'Octavia, where's my daughter?' Octavia blinked at Marcus' question, shaking her head to clear her thoughts. 'I'll, uh, I'll go get her, and Clarke.'

Marcus nodded as he focused on helping everyone out of their binds. Octavia left the room quickly, hoping to find Brinley quickly so they could leave the hell they were currently trapped in.

Octavia did find Brinley quickly, and in that moment she almost wished she hadn't.

*****

Clarke and Bellamy walked into the dorm with heavy hearts, Clarke immediately rushing towards her mother.

'Bellamy, is Octavia back yet?' Marcus Kane looked tired as he left Abby and Clarke with each other.

'She isn't here?'

'No, she went to find my daughter. I-'

Someone called his name and Bellamy could see that the man was needed. 'I'll go get them.'

'Thank you.' Marcus clapped Bellamy on the shoulder and both of them knew that the thank you was for more than just locating Brinley and Octavia.

Bellamy didn't think he deserved any gratitude.

Bellamy walked the halls of level five, certain that his two girls wouldn't be anywhere there wasn't something to do, or someone to help. Bellamy could breathe easier knowing they were safe, even through the lead weight that settled on his heart as he thought of all the innocent children that the mountain had housed.

As he walked a soft whispering hit his ears and he followed the noise, knowing that it would be one of two people.

Bellamy caught sight of a dead mount weather soldier lying on the floor first, and then his gaze went to Octavia concern immediately crossing his face as he spotted the distraught look on hers. 'O? What's-?'

And then his knees hit the ground.

His eyes had gone to Octavia's lap, where Brinley's head was resting, then travelled further down, seeing the way her hands were pressed over an area on her stomach, her hand slick with blood.

'No, no, no! Hey, hey, hey, Brin? Brinley?'

'Hey hotshot.' Brinley gasped out.

Bellamy's hands went to smooth her hair, but he found his hands suddenly covered in blood, though he was relived to see her chest still rising and falling evenly with every breath she took.

'I just found her like this – Bellamy-' Octavia had tears falling down her cheeks and her hands were shaking.

Bellamy suddenly found that he had trouble speaking. 'O – Clarke, we need Clarke.'

'I'll – I'll-'

'I got her. O, please.'

Bellamy lifted Brinley as gently as he could, but a sharp cry still left Brinley's lips. Octavia stood unsteadily before she disappeared back towards the dorm.

Bellamy looked down at Brinley, only to find her already looking at him. 'Tell me what I can do to help sweetheart, please.'

Brinley blinked rapidly. 'The bullet didn't... I need Clarke to get it out.'

Bellamy was alarmed by how slurred her speech sounded. 'She's coming okay Brin? How – how's your head?'

'Fine. Head...s...bleed... a lot.'

Bellamy felt panic clawing up his throat as Brinley seemed to zone in and out even as she spoke. His hands pressed against her stomach, trying to stop the bleeding as much as possible until Clarke arrived.

Brinley blinked the haziness away again, noticing the fear and shininess in Bellamy's eyes. She found words on the tip of her tongue and suddenly she was speaking them aloud, 'Bellamy, I lo-'

'Brinley! Oh my god!'

Clarke appeared, followed closely by Brinley's father and Monty, both of whom looked incredibly pale.

'What happened?' Clarke gasped out.

'Clarke, the bullet's still in her stomach.'

Clarke nodded. 'We're going to have to get it out. We'll have to move her.'

'Clarke, I don't-' Bellamy choked out.

'Bellamy, that dorm room is filled with medical supplies. We have to move her. If we don't do this she could-' Clarke inhaled sharply. 'I don't know if the bullet has hit anything vital, we need to do this now.'

Bellamy nodded quickly. 'What can I do?'

'You and Kane need to get one of the tables cleaned off as best you can. Everyone else in there has to stay out of the way. I'll try and find a stretcher.'

'I'm not leaving her-'

'Yes you are. Monty will stay right here, c'mon on Bellamy, now!' Clarke could see that having Kane and Bellamy hanging around was a bad idea. The both of them were too wound up and it would end up causing trouble, and right now Clarke needed no distractions. Already she'd forced a distraught Octavia to stay in the dorm with Miller and the others.

Clarke nodded at Monty as she practically pushed Kane and Bellamy away from Brinley, reminding them of the time sensitive nature of the situation at hand.

Brinley heard, rather than saw, them leave and in that moment she saw a chance. 'Monty?'

'Hey, Brin. We're gonna get you out of here okay?'

'Mon... I need you to do something for me.' Brinley spoke as clearly as she could manage, tears still escaping her eyes every few moments. It took her a few tried but eventually she explained, in broken sentences, what she needed Monty to do.

Monty, though he looked confused, nodded at her. 'I'll do that as soon as I'm sure you're okay.'

Brinley nodded. 'Promise me you won't tell anyone what you find?'

'Brin-'

'Monty please!' Brinley gasped as she moved too much and Monty quickly nodded in agreement.

Bellamy, Clarke, and Marcus appeared again, and Bellamy wasted no time cradling Brinley in his arms, apologising repeatedly as she let out loud cries every time Bellamy moved. Clarke had been unable to locate a stretcher on the level and that left them no choice but to carry her.

Brinley felt cool metal underneath her, heard multiple voices blur together and felt a hand slip into hers before all she felt was pain.

White hot, unbearable, pain.

*****

Monty snuck away from the group, unable to stand the sound of Brinley's screams reverberating around the hushed mountain. He'd made her a promise and he intended to keep it.

Doing as she'd instructed, Monty began to feel nauseous as he realised exactly what had almost happened in that isolated corridor on level five.

'Any idea where Cage went?' Octavia appeared in the doorway, both of them flinching as Brinley let out another shrill cry. Monty quickly shook his head, switching to the dining hall camera. 'No, no luck yet.'

Octavia nodded, leaving him again.

Monty swallowed thickly as he tapped at the computer, finishing up what he'd come to do.

The moment he hit the correct button, back in the dorm rooms, Brinley finally stopped screaming.
