They didn't have to wait long. Brinley was sitting beside Monty watching the surveillance video when it happened.
'Here they come.' Brinley muttered to Monty who nodded at her nervously.
'No guns.' Monty muttered as he moved towards Jasper, Brinley following. 'No guns you were right.'
'It's because they can't kill us. Not like this anyway.' Jasper frowned.
'Be careful with that thing, we're in close, you could hit one of us.' Brinley heard Miller talking to Harper who looked worried, evidence of her abuse still obvious on her pretty face.
'Miller.' Brinley snapped. 'Leave her alone. She's got this.'
Miller put his hands up in surrender and Harper sent Brinley a timid smile that she returned.
'Wait a minute, some of them aren't wearing Hazmat suits.' Monty realised, a terrible feeling crawling over his skin.
'What's it mean?' Miller asked in confusion.
But Brinley knew what it meant; she squeezed her fists together tightly as Jasper answered.
'Means they're cured. The marrow treatments worked.'
'Get ready!' Jasper addressed the rest of the group and not a moment later, cans of red gas were thrown into the room.
'Grab them!' Brinley ordered. 'Put them in water! Hold your breath! Now! Now! Go!'
Anyone who could grab the cans did, dumping them in water to stop the noxious smoke filling the room.
'Everybody get down!' Jasper ordered as everyone dropped where they were, feigning unconsciousness as people swarmed the room.
Brinley heard someone disturb one of the buckets of water as Jasper jumped up from beside her. 'Now!'
Blood was spilled as the sounds of conflict filled the room, each remaining member of the original one hundred fighting for their survival, killing those that got in their way. It was a barbaric scene, one of unexplainable violence.
But to them that was simply how life had been since they'd landed on the ground.
'Retreat! Retreat!' One of the guards screamed upon realising they were losing. Brinley struck out at him, landing a nice slice across his cheek as he ran away from the chaos.
'We did it! Seal the barricade!' Jasper cheered, but the excitement wore off as a high-pitched scream filled the room.
'No! Jasper! You promised!'
'Fox! Fox! No! No!'
'Grab him!' Brinley ordered Miller, who was closer to their friend as he tried to leave the room.
'She'll be okay.' Miller muttered quietly.
Jasper stopped fighting. 'I promised her.'
One of the soldiers by their feet began trying to crawl away clearly injured, and Brinley watched in shock as an emotionless Jasper swung his axe, ending the mans life with one sickening thump.
There was a stunned silence before Brinley spoke. 'Alright, fix the barricade, gather any fallen weapons we need to be ready for another attack.' No one moved. 'Come on people lets go! Now!'
'Hey, Jasper.' Brinley put a hand on her friends shoulder. 'Are you okay?'
'If anything happens to Fox-'
'She'll be fine, okay? Remember Bellamy's helping too, and Clarke and Raven are working from the outside. We aren't entirely alone in this.'
Jasper nodded. 'I know.'
Jasper busied his hands, Brinley working silently beside him, lost in thought until Miller appeared. 'They're gonna come in hotter next time, you know that right?'
'All we gotta do is hold the floor until Bellamy finds a way out.'
'We're gonna need more than a bucket of water and four guns to do that.'
Brinley kicked Miller lightly, letting him know to back off as Jasper looked down hopelessly, the fight and will to survive he'd shown seemingly gone.
'This is President Wallace talking to the people who just killed ten of my men.'
Jasper picked up the walkie silently.
'Jasper.' Monty handed over the screen he was using to view the security camera, panic in his voice.
'I thought we'd try something a little different this time. There's only twenty minutes of oxygen left in Maya's suit. I know she's a friend of yours. In twenty minutes your friend will either suffocate, or burn. But you can save her. All you have to do is surrender.'
Brinley tore her eyes away from the screen showing Maya looking around frantically for a way to escape, eyes moving to Jasper who had determination on his face again, as well as tears in his eyes.
Brinley immediately turned and walked away, stealing one of the guns from the table as she did so.
'Brinley! What are you doing?' Miller questioned loudly.
'Going to help Maya, are you lot coming or what?'
*****
'You're okay.'
Brinley and Jasper guided Maya into the room, glancing at each other as they heard her laboured breathing. If Maya didn't start to calm down, her oxygen wouldn't last her ten minutes.
Monty joined the two, kneeling down in front of Maya, sympathy on his face.
'Listen to me, Fox is okay. Bellamy saved her. He's gonna get some guns in here through the trash chute.' Maya was still breathing too hard and Brinley rubbed the girls back gently, her face softening at Bellamy's name.
'If we can get guns in we can get you out.' Jasper looked hopeful, as did Maya before Monty interrupted.
'No, we can't.' Monty looked down. 'I dismantled the chute. I'm sorry, I didn't think we'd be trying to open it ourselves.' Monty looked up at Maya, placing his hand gently on hers. 'I can fix it.'
Maya smiled slightly, nodding.
'Thank you.' Jasper breathed as Monty immediately set to work.
Brinley looked to Miller who was watching the interaction. 'Go help him.'
Miller nodded, calling out for Harper's help as he moved.
'I won't let you die.' Jasper breathed to Maya quietly.
Brinley felt like she was intruding on a personal moment, but as she dropped her hand to her side, Maya grabbed it gently, ferocity colouring her voice despite the shakiness of her breathing. 'I won't let you surrender.'
'C'mon, let's go help Monty.' Brinley suggested, Maya and Jasper following behind.
There wasn't much the three of them could do besides hand Monty whatever tools or supplies he needed and Brinley couldn't help but notice how laboured Maya's breathing continued to get as time passed. Evidently Jasper noticed as well as he began pushing Monty to hurry up.
'She's almost out of oxygen, it's been nineteen minutes.' Harper glanced down at her watch nervously.
'Not helping Harper.' Maya gasped from where she was leaning on the wall by the still disabled chute.
'Don't worry, we'll get it open, won't we, Monty?'
'Almost there.' Monty answered quickly.
'Almost isn't good enough.' Miller uttered darkly, earning a sharp smack from Brinley.
'I just need to bypass the-' Monty jumped backwards as he was shocked by electricity. 'Screw this.' He mumbled, pulling all the wires from the wall.
'What the hell did you do?' Miller asked incredulously, and admittedly Brinley was wondering the same thing.
'Cut the power to the motor. Help me.'
Miller and Monty began pulling as hard as they could as Maya's oxygen slowly ran out and she began to suffocate.
'We can't get leverage!' Monty grit out through his teeth, muscles straining as he continued to pull.
'There's someone in there!' Harper gasped out as the chute began to rattle.
'They're coming in!' Jasper yelled, raising his gun as the others moved away quickly before the chute burst open.
Brinley let out a sigh of relief as Bellamy appeared.
'Bellamy!' Jasper exhaled.
'Get her in here. Come on.' Bellamy reached towards Maya who moved towards Bellamy immediately.
'Come on! Go, go, go! Hurry up!'
Before Brinley could even process what was going on, Jasper had grabbed her arm, pushing her ahead of him and down the chute after Maya and Bellamy.
Brinley landed beside Maya and Jasper landed on top of her, apologising as he rolled off of her quickly, pulling Maya's mask off.
Maya was gasping as she embraced Jasper who held her tightly. 'I got you. I got you.'
'Wasn't aware I was coming along for the ride.' Brinley coughed as she pulled herself up, jumping down beside Bellamy.
'It's safer if you're here.' Jasper explained as Maya hugged Brinley.
'Not that you care if you're safe, considering you keep putting yourself in danger for fun.' Bellamy's voice was bitter and it was clear he was still pissed that she'd come to Mount Weather against his orders.
Brinley rolled her eyes at his attitude.
He'd have to get over it.
An unfamiliar man appeared and Brinley tensed until she saw the flash of recognition on Maya's face. 'Dad, what are you doing here?'
'What your mother would have done. Come here.'
Jasper laughed in relief, hugging Bellamy.
'Hey, listen to me. Clarke is coming with an army of grounders.'
Bellamy's words shocked Jasper. 'What?'
'We have to keep all of you safe until then.'
'Well, don't tell me Finn finally got his peace talks.' Jasper joked and Bellamy's eyes went to Brinley who shook her head slightly. She hadn't told her friends of Finn's descent into madness, she figured they needed hope, not tales of massacres and death executed by one of their own.
'Something like that.' Bellamy covered quickly. 'Come one, we got a lot of work to do.'
'What's your plan hot shot?' Brinley stood beside Bellamy as Jasper knocked on the chute, waiting for the others to follow them down.
'Nothing that concerns you sweetheart. You're going with the others.'
'No I'm not.' Brinley scoffed. 'No way.'
'Thanks to your theatrics, they know you're here. They don't know I'm here, you'll blow my cover.' Bellamy's voice was hard. 'Maya's Father and his friends have agreed to hide all of you, that's what you're doing.'
'Are you seriously still pissed at me?' Brinley laughed incredulously.
Bellamy said nothing as they heard the chute rattle slightly.
Brinley scoffed, moving towards Maya who was watching her father leave to rally the other rebels together in order to keep her friends safe. 'Hey, Maya.'
'Brinley, hey. What's up?' Maya smiled kindly at the girl.
'I kinda need you to do something for me.'
*****
'It's all clear.'
Brinley followed close behind Bellamy and Jasper as they stalked through the empty corridors warily. Whatever guns they had were dispersed amongst them with the more experienced shooters getting priority.
'Won't they see us?' Monty asked the question everyone had been thinking.
'Relax, Maya took out the cameras.' Bellamy was entirely unfazed by the situation, looking at ease as he guided them through the halls.
'Yeah well we're still sitting ducks in a group like this.' Miller's usual negative comment was expected, though his words weren't untrue.
'You're right, so we're gonna split up.'
'No.' Monty panicked, stopping Bellamy from walking. 'We do this together, we survive together.'
'Bellamy's right.' Jasper agreed, much to Monty's surprise.
'Well they don't trust Maya anymore, who the hell is gonna help us now?' Miller rolled his eyes.
Bellamy tilted his head slightly as they moved. 'They are.'
'We're going to hide you.' Maya was spearheading the mount weather rebels. 'Not everyone here agrees with Cage, not by a long shot.'
'Come with me, we'll divide you along the way.' Maya's dad signalled them to follow him, which most of the group did without hesitation. Brinley felt a surge of gratitude for the people willing to risk their lives for what they believed was right. There was no way her friends would be able to hide without inside help.
Brinley didn't move, unsurprised as Jasper and Monty rushed towards Bellamy. 'Hey, we're coming with you.'
'No you're not. They still don't know I'm here and I need to keep it that way.' Bellamy's tone left no room for argument.
'So what to we do?' Monty sounded lost and confused.
'Stay alive, be ready to fight. War is coming.'
Bellamy hesitated for a moment before he stepped in front of Brinley, moving his hand to the back of her head as he kissed her forehead lightly. 'Go with them and stay hidden, please.'
Brinley closed her eyes briefly at the contact, opening them as she nodded at Bellamy who stared at her a moment longer before he hurried away, disappearing as he turned the corner.
Brinley turned around to face Jasper and Monty, noting the look they shared as she did so.
'I feel like we missed something.'
'Yeah we definitely missed something.'
Brinley rolled her eyes playfully as she moved towards Maya who lingered behind them. 'Hey.'
'Here.' Maya handed her the radio and earbud she'd been hiding behind her back. 'I've disabled some of the cameras but some are still active so be careful. I wrote the two stations to listen to on the back, The Ark is the second one. Bellamy's working on disabling the veil – the acid fog.' Maya shook her head before she continued. 'Bellamy and Raven have been working on getting into the restricted areas downstairs, I'd start looking there.'
'Got it.' Brinley nodded gratefully. 'Thank you, Maya, really. You have no idea how helpful you've been - to all of us.'
Maya smiled shyly at Brinley's words. 'Anything I can do to help I will. You don't feel bad for lying to him?'
'I'm not lying, just stretching the truth. Bellamy told me to go with you and I have, briefly, and I'll stay hidden so...' Brinley shrugged.
'You're not coming with us are you?' Jasper realised.
'Sorry Jas, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. All of you be safe, please.'
Jasper and Monty nodded as she kissed both their cheeks and hugged Maya. 'Now go, the lot of you.'
Brinley waited for them to leave before she shoved the earbud in her ears, switching the walkie on, smiling as she noticed Maya had already preset the channel she needed to listen to. She ran in the general direction Maya had told her, going down stairways with her gun at the ready while keeping her head down and staying out of view of the cameras as much as possible.
It didn't take long for the static in her ear to crackle, telling her what she needed to know. 'Dispatch! In pursuit of the target. It's not Lovejoy! I repeat, it's not Lovejoy!'
Brinley realised that not only could she hear the pursuit through the walkie, she could hear heavy footfalls on metal. She wasn't far from the confrontation, the flashing alarms signalling that as she entered a new part of the mountain that looked less modern and more industrial.
'You're surrounded! There's no way out!'
The voice echoed towards Brinley who began moving faster. 'What have you gotten yourself into Bellamy?'
'Garza what's your status? Garza!'
Brinley heard no reply and she assumed that meant Bellamy had taken care of at least one of the guards tailing him.
One of the passcode locks was still lit up, signalling someone had just entered the room with the worn down RESTRICTED across the door. Brinley saw an opportunity and she took it, sneaking inside seconds before the light changed back to red and the door locked.
Brinley snuck up behind the guard who was further in the room, up a short flight of stairs, standing with his back to her.
'Boo.'
The guard swung around but by the time he'd realised she was there; he was hitting the ground with a large gash on his forehead from the butt of Brinley's gun.
Brinley sighed, dragging him behind one of the large tanks the room held. Her back hit the wall as she slid down it, melting into the shadows as she switched the radio to the only other channel she knew.
'Hey Birdy, long time no talk.'
*****
Bellamy raised his fist and knocked on the door, looking around warily for anyone out of place.
The door opened and Bellamy spoke quietly. 'Vincent, I need your help.'
Vincent moved aside quickly, shutting the door behind Bellamy.
'It's all over the radio, they know about you. Did anyone see you come here?'
'No, I've been keeping to the vents and unmonitored halls, like you said.'
'Vincent.'
Bellamy drew his gun as a uniformed man came into view, Vincent jumping in between the two quickly.
'It's okay! Lee's with us!'
'Dante was like a father to me. Some of us don't agree with Cage's agenda.' Lee explained quickly, hands up defensively.
'Where's Jasper, Monty, Maya and Brinley?' Bellamy didn't lower his gun.
'They're okay. Thanks to Lee we moved them to a wing that's already been searched.'
'Isn't that a risk?' Bellamy finally lowered his gun.
'We had no choice. They've gone public with what happened on level five. They're saying you killed ten soldiers. I don't know how much longer we can keep this shell game going.' Vincent sounded genuinely concerned.
'No, no. That's why I'm here. I'm gonna need another route.'
'Way ahead of you.' Vincent moved, pulling something off of a cabinet. 'You can get there through the retrofit zones. They're off limits, no camera's no patrols. We used some to move the kids, that's your other route. You're also gonna need this.'
Bellamy looked at the odd object in confusion.
'An acetylene torch, go to the northwest corridor –'
'Hey, wait. Hold on.' Lee interrupted, seeming deep in thought. 'You asked about your friends?'
'Yeah, and?'
'How many of them were here?' Lee gestured to the room.
'Jasper, Monty, Maya and Brinley, so four?'
Lee looked mildly panicked as he and Vincent shared a look and Bellamy noticed. 'What?'
'We only moved three, because we only had three here.' Vincent explained.
Bellamy sighed, rubbing his forehead as he looked down. 'Why can't she just listen to me, for once.' He hadn't really expected Brinley to stay out of the action but still, some part of him had hoped she'd listen.
Bellamy looked up again, squaring his shoulders. He knew Brinley was capable, but that didn't mean he had to like her plans. 'So, the northwest corridor?'
*****
Brinley waited for a reply from the radio, eyes scanning the area constantly, glancing at the unconscious guard next to her on occasion.
The radio crackled slightly. 'Who is this?'
'Jesus Reyes, am I that easily forgotten?'
A moment of silence. 'Brinley?'
'Ten points to you.' Brinley murmured into the walkie quietly.
'I'm so glad to hear your voice. You scared the crap outta me, and Bellamy.'
'Apparently that's one of my many, many talents.' Brinley smiled wryly to herself.
'Are you with him now?'
Brinley bit her lip, wondering if she should lie or not. 'Depends on how you define being with someone.'
'You know what I mean, Kane.'
'Bellamy refuses to let me do anything Raven. What would you do if you were me?'
Raven sighed. 'I'm going to take that as a no... but I also see your point.' She admitted grudgingly.
'That's part of the reason I like you so much. Any progress on the acid fog?'
'No, Bellamy's supposed to be finding a way in now.'
'Once he's in, what's he looking for?'
'We – hold on a second.'
Brinley waited, a few tense minutes passed before Raven spoke again, giving her a new frequency where they could talk. Brinley fiddled with the radio for a moment before she heard something, a short sharp sound that reminded her of metal on metal.
'-ley. Brin, you there?'
'Yeah I'm here, what was that about?' Brinley strained her ears but failed to her anything else.
'Bellamy's in. He's looking for some way to disable the fog now.'
Brinley could hear talking floating up towards her, and she froze. Trying not to make a sound.
'Brinley, you okay?'
'I think there's someone else hanging around.' Brinley's voice was hushed, her breathing slightly uneven. Raven didn't reply and Brinley stood up, making sure the guard was still out to it as she did so, readying her gun.
'Kane, you still alive in there?'
'Who the hell are you?'
'The name's Wick. Raven's busy with your boy toy so you get stuck with me.'
'Fantastic.'
'Don't sound so excited. Raven said you could be somewhere near Bellamy. What can you see around you?'
'A whole tonne of nothing. A few tanks but that's it.'
'Tanks? What kind of tanks?'
'Uh, oxygen according to the label.'
'Keep your bullets aimed away from them then yeah?'
Brinley rolled her eyes. 'What am I going to do? Shoot at them for-'
Brinley stopped, hearing a strange whirring sound, followed by loud clanking. 'Some of the tanks just started up. Should I take that as a bad sign?'
'No, no uh, take it as a good sign. That's Bellamy neutralising the veil.' Raven came through the radio, sounding flustered and Brinley grinned wickedly imagining what was going on back at Camp Jaha.
Brinley's smile slipped as an alarm stared blaring. She could hear someone pounding on the door she'd originally entered through and her heart rate accelerated.
'Guys, I've got company.'
Brinley received no response and she cursed, right at the moment that man behind her started to stir, the overwhelmingly loud alarms waking him from his Brinley induced sleep.
'Really?' Brinley cursed as she moved away quickly. Hopefully he'd be too disoriented to follow her straight away. She didn't want to kill anyone else if she didn't have to.
'Drop your weapon!'
'Move, move, move, let's go!'
Bellamy.
Brinley moved, immediately spotting four guards as she emerged from her hiding space, briefly catching sight of Bellamy's curly hair before he disappeared.
'On my lead, he's armed. Don't be a hero.'
Brinley debated with herself what to do for a moment, cursing internally as she bought her arm back, then launching it forward, her gun clanging against the metal of the tank she was closest too, loud enough for the guards closest to her to hear, the sound carrying towards them.
'What was that?'
'He's up there.'
'There's no way he moved that fast, who else is here?'
'Emerson said one intruder.'
'Maybe Emerson was wrong.'
Brinley took that as her cue, standing in front of one of the oxygen tanks with a sweet smile on her face.
The guards spun around at the sharp whistle that broke through the cacophony of the alarms.
'Hiya boys.'
The guards trained their guns on her. 'Drop your weapon!'
'Hmmm...' Brinley tapped her chin with her gun for a moment. 'You know what? I don't think I will.'
She moved a split second before the first few bullets were shot, hiding behind the oxygen tank, chest rising and falling as adrenaline coursed through her veins.
'Don't shoot! If you hit those tanks we're all dead!' Brinley grinned, knowing she'd given Bellamy enough time to disappear with her distraction.
However, she almost screamed as a hand covered her mouth.
'Don't scream.'
'Bellamy.' Brinley gaped as she turned around. 'What are you-'
'C'mon.' Bellamy's expression was grim as he grabbed her by the hand, tugging her down back onto the lower level he'd been on.
'How the hell are we supposed to get past them? I gave you a distraction, you were supposed to leave.' Brinley knew they couldn't risk going through the door the guards had entered from on the upper level, they'd have a clear shot at both her and Bellamy. For a moment she wondered if they were well and truly trapped until she saw the determination on his face.
'Just trust me. Can you do that?'
Brinley nodded without hesitation.
'Good, now run.'
Brinley was dazed for a second before she took off running after Bellamy, dodging bullets as she followed him into the open vent that she assumed he was responsible for. The two of them shot at the guards until Bellamy's guns began clicking.
'Go.' Brinley shoved him ahead of her, continuing to shoot as she followed him until her gun began clicking too. 'Fuck.'
'They're out. Go after them.'
Brinley heard someone climb into the vent with them and she moved faster, letting out a yell as someone grabbed a hold of her ankle.
There was a huge explosion and Brinley felt her captor release her as the vent shook, permitting her to begin moving, faster this time as tongues of fire licked at her feet.
She slid out of the vent, landing hard against the metal grates at the bottom, plumes of smoke and ash following her in, the smell of the fire mixed with burning flesh filling her lungs.
Brinley felt Bellamy's hands on her, dragging her towards him, tucking her into his chest as he curled both of their bodies together, each of them covering their faces until the flames died down slightly.
Bellamy began coughing violently as Brinley moved away slightly; body shaking as she gasped in lungful's of toxic air just as quickly as she coughed them out.
Beside her, Bellamy was sprawled out, his grin of disbelief bright in the dim lighting as he laughed.
Brinley smiled, despite the burning of her lungs. 'You're insane.'
Bellamy laughed again, his chest still heaving up and down. 'I'm insane? You're insane.' His voice was raspy from both smoke and exhaustion.
'You wouldn't have me any other way.' Brinley rasped out, feeling the adrenaline wearing off.
Brinley turned her head to look at Bellamy, only to find him already looking at her. 'Damn right I wouldn't sweetheart.'
Brinley smirked at him, aware of how close their faces were. 'Guess I wouldn't have you any other way either hotshot.'
Bellamy smiled at her in response. 'Are you alright?'
'I'm fine, are you?' Bellamy nodded and Brinley coughed again before she continued. 'Good. But our friends might not be. We have to go.'
Brinley ignored the way her body screamed at her to stop as Bellamy helped her up, both of them determined to save their friends.
