Chapter 32: The Red Dawn Part II
'He who walked the path of hell
who didn't know what we will tell
accused of committing a crime
only he knows what goes on in his mind
by the winter solstice it shall appear
and let everyone finally hear.'
As the sun will rise, the bloodshed will rise. As the sun will set, the bloodshed will come to an end. At sunrise, there will be two armies but at sunset there will only be one army standing. The standing army shall celebrate their victory, but it will be a short celebration. It will be interrupted. Because when hell rises, no army will be standing. Only hell's heir.
~
The thick layer of fog was scattered across the jungle, making it impossible to navigate through it. But Annabeth kept moving forward, oblivious to her surroundings but not to her thoughts. Thanks to the huge weight of fear that caged her heart, she found it hard to breath or think straight. She would have to face Percy now, as his enemy and traitor. She prayed he had forgotten his promise, that he would kill her if she betrayed him. She won't die on the battlefield today. She would live, Annabeth didn't agree to have it any other way.
"Maybe you should've stayed back on the shore. We all know it's hard for you to face Percy." Thalia said as she came up next to her. The huntress had her short black hair pulled back into a tight braid and with her hair out of the way, her sapphire eyes glowed brighter with excitement and yet fear. Thalia was ready to fight. "It's hard for all of us. However that doesn't mean I leave the fighting for the rest of you while I hide on a ship, too emotional to deal with my reality." Annabeth didn't mean for her comment to come out sounding harsh, but she wasn't in the mood to discuss her feelings and also consider Thalia's.
Thalia replied with a silent nod, knowing not to press her forward. Along with the fog, fear and tension clung to the air as the army made it's way to the top of the hill. The demigods stood on the front lines, behind them, minor gods, centaurs, satyrs and nymphs stood. The Olympians would attack from above, but their main mission was to take out the sea monsters that would destroy their ships once they arrived. However, the sea creatures never attacked. Who knew what Percy truly intended to use them for.
"Annabeth, stop." Jason grabbed her arm. Annabeth was so lost in her thoughts that she hadn't realised they had already reached the top of the hill. Annabeth dared to glance at what lay ahead. She gasped as terror overtook her. It was the same battlefield from her dream, only it wasn't filled with dead bodies, yet. Annabeth had dreamt about this day, she had seen the bodies that will cover the Earth. Suddenly, the fog faded, as if it was splitting into two half, to revel their enemy. Percy's army stood on the other hill, and his green-black unnatural eyes starred right into hers.
Percy stood at the front, alone. His black armour could be spotted from miles away, causing anyone to turn the other direction. In his right hand, he gripped Riptide tightly. And despite the circumstances, he was smirking. The demigods stood behind him, along with the thousands of monsters that stood. Soaring through the skies, were the giant eagles Annabeth was greeted with when she first arrived, there were hundreds of them. Jason stepped forward, facing Percy, but before he could speak, Percy interrupted.
Percy turned his focus to the Olympians who rode their chariots in the sky. "My dear Olympians, it's been awhile. Did you miss me?" He asked, grinning.
"Perseus Jackson, announce your surrender and this won't have to end badly." Zeus, whose voice boomed across the sky, said. Percy's laugh echoed across the battlefield. "Surrender? Zeus, I always knew you weren't the brightest but I didn't know you were that dim." His smile faded as his black blood became evident through his skin. Gasps rang out amongst Camp Half-Blood's army. They were all told about his blood, but they never imagined it to be terrifying. "You and your army," Percy said, pointing at Jason. "Kneel before me, and I would show you mercy."
Jason shook his head. "Never."
Percy shook his head. "I'm disappointed, but have it your way." He knelt and placed his palm on the Earth's soil and closed his eyes. "This my friends, is my big surprise." The ground beneath him began to shake, the sky's orange colour became darker, turning to a mix of orange and bloody red. It was called the Red Dawn for a reason.
Beneath his feet, the ground began to crack. From each side, the crack expanded on an uncontrollable speed, until a narrow, but a hole big enough for giants to crawl through, lay in the middle of the battlefield. Red vapour began to rise from the hole, as roars and battle cries echoed from the crack in the earth. More monsters crawled out of it, but the worst part was the giants that came out. The red vapour circled Percy until he was no longer visible. Annabeth already knew what was happening but her mind couldn't process how it was possible, and she was left speechless. The red vapour around Percy faded, and all human essence about him faded too. His eyes were now bloodshot red and his black blood turned to permanent black scares on his body. Tartarus. Percy had sucked all it power, making it his.
"Now my dear Olympians, who wants to come face hell." He laughed, raising Riptide to the sky, and charged.
It was as if a hurricane had attacked the island when both armies charged to the field. Annabeth forced her legs forward, pulling her dagger our of her belt as she plunged into the enemies army. Giants. Percy had summoned Tartarus' worst and most feared. It would take gods and demigods to bring them down. The world around her was in chaos, and she had to learn to manage her way through it. She could feel the adrenaline kicking in as her sight became more focused, her speed quicker and her power stronger. It always happened to her when she was in a battle.
Annabeth out down an opposing monster or camper that faced her. She had never felt like this before, her immortality had sharpened her skills, she never missed her targets. It had only been minutes into the chaos but her forehead was already dripping with sweat and her beat raced uncontrollably. "Not bad Chase, you've gotten better." Annabeth already knew who she would be facing when she turned around and came face to face with Octavia.
"What are you doing out of your cell Octavia? Shouldn't you be rotting in it?" Annabeth asked. She kept her eyes focused on Octavia's every move, she knew how this would end. Octavia smiled, her brown eyes sparkling with delight. "I escaped. I was actually planning to get off this island when I overhead you, Piper and Nico in the woods last night. Then I thought, why not tell Percy? He was beyond outraged." She laughed.
Annabeth's eyes widened when she realised the truth. Percy knows that Jason has Pandora's box. He could easily escape or trap Jason in it. "The box-" She began.
"Oh, Percy knows all about that. He knows it's with Grace. But he's more interested in having your dead body delivered to him." Octavia explained.
Annabeth instantly recovered from her shook. "Let me guess, he assigned you to do it."
Octavia smiled. "Yes. He did." Octavia charged forward. Annabeth stepped away but Octavia's sword still managed to leave a small cut on her arm but it didn't slow Annabeth down. Octavia stumbled forward when she missed, giving Annabeth a chance. Annabeth kicked her down and Octavia fell, her sword scattering a few inches away.
Annabeth placed her foot on Octavia's back, holding her down. Annabeth knelt, placing her dagger inches away from the back of Octavia's neck. "You know how this ends, daughter of Ares."
"It ends with your death, Chase." Without warning, Octavia grabbed a fist of dirt and threw it on Annabeth's face. With her vision blinded, Annabeth tripped. She wiped the dirt off her face and stood up, her sword gripped tightly. Octavia had already retrieved her sword and stood a few feet away from Annabeth. "Even if you do manage to kill me today Chase, you do realise your friends will never trust you again, right?" Octavia smiled.
"And why is that?" She asked.
Despite the dirt smudged on her face and the sweat dripping from her forehead, Octavia still managed to look intimidating. "Percy will make sure to mention to Jason that he knows he has the box, when they fight face to face. Jason will think you lied to him, telling him Percy doesn't know he has the box. What a shame." Annabeth's eyes widened with fury. She had earned her friends' trust, and Octavia managed to destroy it all. With a cry of anger, Annabeth attacked. Their swords clashed against each other and repelled back because of their powerful force. The swords kept clashing and then repelling, not one of them missed. Octavia was growing tired, but so was Annabeth. Sooner or later, one would be dead.
Thanks to Tartarus, the skies had turned fully red, even the sun couldn't easily be detected. Annabeth kept pushing forward. Every swing of her sword was strong and precise but so was Octavia's. Finally, with all of her remaining energy, Annabeth's sword clashed against Octavia's, but it was so powerful, it disarmed Octavia, causing her sword to break in half.
"That's impossible." Octavia muttered as horror became recognisable in her eyes.
"For you, maybe." Annabeth swung her sword, targeting Octavia's throat. The sword didn't miss, it caused a huge wound along her neck. Octavia began to cough and fell on her back. Blood emerged from her mouth as Octavia took her final breaths. Annabeth was standing over her, watching in silence, unaware of the war around her as her enemy finally died.
It had started to rain by the time Annabeth stepped away from Octavia's limp body and joined her friends in battle. Jason was fighting the island's campers, putting them down quickly. Annabeth joined him, cutting down any demigod that came in her path. "Where's Percy." She asked him.
"He's battling the Olympians." Jason replied as he dug his sword through Dominic, one of the Upper Guards. Annabeth always despised Dominic, but seeing him dead was different. He may have been a villain, but he was once an innocent child that was thrown in a merciless world. Annabeth felt kind of sorry for him. "Where's Piper, and the others?" Jason asked as he pushed his wet hair away from his face. Annabeth's eyes scanned the chaos in front of her, she spotted Piper and Reyna battling a giant with Artemis' aid. Thalia and the rest of the hunters we brining down the eagles in the sky, but more kept appearing from the trees. "Don't worry about her, Artemis is fighting with her."
Before Annabeth could warn Jason about Percy's knowledge of the box, a scream of agony echoed across the island. Everyone froze, turning their attention to Percy and the rest of the Olympians. Percy was on Blackjack and right in front of him was Ares. Ares was surrounded by the red vapour that had surrounded Percy earlier, he was struggling to break free from it and pain was clearly visible in his eyes. "What are you doing to him Perseus?" Poseidon asked.
Percy smiled. "I'm banishing him to Tartarus. What else am I doing?" He pointed towards the huge crack in the Earth that led to Tartarus. The red vapour pushed Ares forward, controlled by Percy. When Ares was right above the hole, the vapour dissolved away. Ares creamed as he fell, taking all the hope of defeating Percy with him. "He'll be there for eternity. Amongst his enemies, how wonderful."
"Percy, just like the legend said, we fight. Now. This war ends with my death or yours." Jason said.
Percy laughed. "But I don't want to end it today, I want it to go on just a little longer." Annabeth could see the happiness in Percy's eyes. He was planning something and whatever it was, she knew it would end with her death somehow. "Jason don't do this. The prophecy." Annabeth whispered.
"What about it?" He asked.
"The line: by the inter solstice it shall appear, and let everyone finally hear. Today is the winter solstice and Tartarus appeared, he is Tartarus now Jason. He too powerful for you to take him on. You'll die." She warned.
"What's taking you so long to decide Sparky? I have gods to banish." Percy casually said.
"I'll fight." Jason said. Percy grinned and jumped down from Blackjack, landing on his knees, safely. He stood up and uncapped Riptide. "Let's see what you're made of Grace."
~
Both armies parted to their hills, leaving Percy and Jason alone in the battlefield. Jason gripped his sword's hilt as his heart beat raced. He knew the odds of walking out alive, but he was willing to defy them all. Percy stood a few feet from him. His red-black eyes were filled with rage and hatred, his black armour made him appear even more terrifying. Percy had managed to drain Tartarus' powers and make it his own. Yep, he was going to definitely die.
"You look scared, Grace. Your eyes tell me so." Percy grinned. Unlike Percy, Jason wasn't able to pull off the brave and unbothered look Percy had plastered on his face. "Surrender now Percy, and the Olympians may show you some mercy." Jason warned him, one last time.
He spat on the ground and looked back up. "Mercy? I don't want it!" Without warning he charged towards him, aiming for his chest. Jason was so stunned he moved away at the last minute but Riptide never missed. Jason stumbled backwards as blood began to flow from underneath his armour. A huge thin and long hole lay in his armour now. "But...how?" He muttered.
Unfortunately, Percy heard him. "After I embraced my dark side and I became a god, Riptide got a little upgrade, it could cut through anything. Even armour." Percy charged again but this time, Jason was ready. Jason's sword repelled Riptide away, causing Percy to stumble backwards. However that didn't cause Percy to give up. They both charged towards each other, metal clashing on metal, it's sound ringing in their ears as they moved back and fourth, their swords attracting and repelling.
Jason knew Percy's plan was to drain his energy until Jason would collapse from exhaustion. Maybe Jason was immortal, but he also wasn't a god. Percy was stronger and more skilled, Jason always knew it, but he would never admit it. He couldn't go on like this any longer, he had to use Pandora's box.
"I know you can control the fog, Percy. Thicken it, we don't want the others to see what will happen now." Jason demanded.
To his surprise, Percy agreed. With a snap of his fingers, the fog around them thickened. The two hills disappeared from his sight. And judging from the gasps and screams he heard coming from his side, he knew they can't see him or Percy. His goal was simple: he didn't want the Olympians to see the box. They had retreated from the sky, to give him and Percy space to fight. Though he didn't plan on flying in the sky to fight Percy.
"Bring that box out Jason, I know you have it." Percy said, his unnatural eyes glowing. Jason froze in his place. "How do you know that I have the box?" he asked.
"Annabeth told me. Did you honestly think she would betray me? She will be my queen." Percy explained. Rage of betrayal filled Jason's heart. Annabeth had betrayed them and tricked them, again. He won't let get away with it. But to make sure of that, he had to trap Percy. An idea sparked in his head as he fished out the small box from his pocket. The sky. He could use it. He silently thanked the Olympians for clearing the sky as he shot up, flying to the top at a good speed. He hated and looked down at Percy who casually stood on the ground, looking up at him. "Anytime now Jason." He said.
Percy wasn't fighting back, and that bothered Jason. Despite what he was planning, Jason wasn't going to waste this chance. He flew back down, heading towards Percy's direction. When he was a few metres away, he opened the box, pointing it towards Percy. Percy's figure began to shimmer away. Before Percy completely disappeared, he said. "You make things way to easy for me Jason, thank you." Then, he faded away completely. With Percy disappearance, the fog cleared. "Percy Jackson is dead! His body faded away as he took his last breath!" Jason lied. His army erupted into cheers. They had won the battle, and Percy was imprisoned. But as people around him celebrated, Jason couldn't help but feel like they lost. Because this is what Percy wanted, he wanted to get trapped and Annabeth had betrayed them. Whatever Percy was planning, he definitely did win today.
