5. Walruses and New Personalities

A/N: Hey guys!

First off, this story has reached 200 reads!!! AHHHHHHH!!! Thanks SO much you guys for all of your support and for reading this story! I really appreciate your views and votes and it makes me so happy that other people are enjoying my writing!

Second, please bear with me through the beginning of this story. I know that it is moving slowly and that it can get pretty boring at times, but I am setting the stage for some hard core emotional roller coasters in the rest of this story. So thank you so much for reading through these initial chapters if you do!

And last of all, I want to state a few things about the timeline here and what versions I am using. My philosophy is that this is my fanfic so I can do whatever I want! So I am really combining a ton of different villains and events from different versions of Spider-Man to make my ideas for the plot work. I am sorry if that bothers you, but I am writing this for fun and I really do hope you enjoy it. I try to make sure that as things come up I clarify what they are and how they fit into everything. If you are still confused, feel free to ask for clarification in the comments! I also want to add that Peter has created his own suit and his own Artificial Intelligence, named F.A.B.A.E. He spent a lot of hours and hard work on getting the necessary materials to build it and actually building it. I tried to make that a bit evident in the story so far, but I just wanted to clear that up.

For everyone who actually read through all of this super long authors note, you get a prize! Here is a Spider-Man plushie just for you! Make sure to cuddle it always!

Okay, onto the story (Finally). Enjoy!

I step out of the shower, rid of the chemicals I used for cleaning the house, and towel dry my hair. I pull on my comfy sweatpants and a soft t-shirt before stepping in front of the mirror with my brush in hand. I quickly attempt to brush my hair down before I look at my reflection and laugh. My hair looks like a wet rat. Oh well, I can't do much. Besides, my hair will dry and poof up anyways in its classic brown curls. It's uncontrollable.

I walk into the kitchen just as the doorbell rings, "I'll get it!" I yell, dashing to the door before Aunt May can move away from the food she is almost done preparing. She smiles at me and rushes to finish.

I unlock the deadbolt on the front door before swinging it open. A huge smile spreads across my face as I greet some of the best people I know, "Hi Julia, Hi Jeff, Hi Kate! Come on in!"

As they step inside, Julia and Kate give me a hug while Jeff claps me on the back and chuckles, "Hi Pete, how've you been this week?"

"Well, school is school. But there's a huge surprise test tomorrow that nobody is telling us what's for." I ramble on, "Oh, and I'm going to Neds house for a movie night with him and MJ after we get you guys settled."

"That sounds like a lot of fun! I guess we both get to hang out with friends tonight huh?"

Kate smiles, "And I know you'll do great on the test Peter."

"Thanks guys!"

I walk over to Aunt May and grab a tray of snacks to bring over for her. I also pull out the DVDs they can choose from and set them next to the TV.

After I have finished that, Aunt May carefully shuffles into the room, balancing the last trays on her hands, "Thanks for doing that hunny."

"No problem! Welp, I'm gonna go. I larb you!"

"I larb you too!"

A chorus of "Bye Peter! Have fun!" follows me out of the door.

As I walk down the sidewalk heading towards Ned's house, just a few minutes walk from mine, thoughts encircle me.

May had found out not long after the whole Vulture fiasco about my 'other half' as she puts it. Surprisingly, she has handled me going out and risking my life a lot better than I ever thought she would. I think that a large part of that is because she knows that even though I love her to the moon and back five million times over, Spider-Manning is the one thing that I will not stop doing for her. So she just does her best to help and support me rather than clash with me 24/7 over it. I mean, it did come as a shock to her and we did have to come up with some compromises, like I text her when I go out on Patrol and keep her up to date and let her know if I find out anything big, but overall, this has worked out a lot better than I expected. It's also really nice to not have to lie to Aunt May and to know that she actually approves in a way and is proud of me being Spider-Man.

I also am still trying to figure out some tidbits of information I have come across this past week during my Patrols. There have been multiple rumors of someone surfacing behind the scenes of the more 'dignified' area of the villain world. Not the crime world, but the villain world. I firmly believe that committing a crime doesn't necessarily make you a villain. Everyone deserves a second chance, and even a third and a fourth depending on who it is and how you're counting. But this new mysterious figure has done a dandy job keeping themselves hidden. I can't for the life of me come across anything other than rumors that lead to their existence.

The sound of my feet hitting against the ground changes as I step onto their welcome mat. I round up all of my thoughts and shove them into the back of my mind for later. I knock on the door quickly to let them know I'm here before stepping inside, "Hello hello hello!" I yell.

Mrs. Leeds appears from around the corner, an apron tied around her waist, "Hello Peter! Ned and MJ are in the TV room waiting for you."

I kick off my shoes and set them next to the door before walking to the TV room. I step in and plop onto the bean bag that I always sit on, "Hi guys!"

"What's up Nerd."

"Hi Peter!"

"Sorry I'm a little late, I couldn't leave without saying hi to May's friends."

Ned turns to me, "Yeah, doesn't she usually have her friends over on Friday? Today's Thursday."

I grab some popcorn and flop back down on the bean bag, "She does but they have a different shift on Friday evening."

MJ tosses some popcorn up into the air and catches it in her mouth, "Hey, what're you losers talking about? I'm still catching up on this whole 'best friends with the biggest nerds ever' lifestyle."

"Hey!" I throw some popcorn at her face which she manages to catch in her mouth, "We love you too. May has some co-workers over every week. I felt bad about her working all the time so I encouraged her to reach out. And now she's best friends with three of the best people I know!"

"Well, good for her." MJ says, grabbing the remote and flipping through the movie options, "Now let's get past this fluff and watch a movie already."

When Ned spots something he sits up abruptly, "Oh oh oh. Let's watch Narnia!" He looks to both of us for our opinions.

MJ shrugs, "Sure."

I haven't watched that for a while... "Let's do it."

Ned fist pumps, "Yeah!"

We dim the lights and sit back to enjoy. All throughout the movie, we have fun teasing each other and giving witty remarks about it.

When we get to the part where Aslan steps out of his tent to greet the 4 humans, a thought strikes me that I just couldn't hold in, "It would be so much better if he was a walrus instead of a lion.

MJ snorts, "A what?"

"A walrus. Just imagine him flopping out of the tent to meet them." I say while imitating the flopping motion with my hand.

Ned laughs, "Then he'll have to knight Peter with his flipper."

MJ smiles, "Would he even be able to reach Peter's shoulders with his flipper?"

We all continue to joke and laugh till the movie ends.

As the credits roll up the screen I stand up, "Well y'all, I should go Patrolling." I glance at my watch: 10:38pm.

Ned and MJ stand up as well. Ned comes up and we do our famous handshake, "Okay. Stay safe please. Don't you dare get stabbed or shot again!"

MJ stands off to the side looking slightly awkward. She isn't one for mushy goodbyes. I step towards her and give her a quick hug. I feel her stiffen before she relaxes and hugs me back, "Bye MJ."

"Bye Peter."

I walk to the door with them and wave to Mrs. Leeds on the way, "Bye Mrs. Leeds!"

She smiles and waves, "Goodbye hunny! Stay safe. Remember that you are welcome anytime."

"Okay, will do Mrs. Leeds. Thanks for hosting us!" I step out of the door and walk down the sidewalk. Once I get a few blocks away I step into an alley and change into my suit. I debate about webbing my backpack under an overhang, but I doubt I will be done with Patrol and back before the webbing dissolves in 2 hours. I glance around and decide to hide it behind a dumpster in the shadows. I make sure to take everything of value with me and stuff them into the nearly invisible padded pockets I recently added to my suit.

I put my mask on and smile, "Hello FABAE!"

"Hello Peter," a slightly mechanical voice says back to me. I have been working at giving her a personality and it is finally showing. I have made sure to leave it slightly open so that I can help her develop her own personality while monitoring how she decides to do so. I never know how new code will react. She could always turn evil on me, even if I seriously doubt that.

"Hey FABAE? Can you text Aunt May and let her know that I am going Patrolling?"

"Will do Peter. Remember that you have that huge test tomorrow so you should make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep."

I roll my eyes, "I know, I know. I will try to get home earlier than usual."

A brief pause follows my answer, "Uh huh. Sure."

"Hey! It's not my fault that I am always out late during Patrol!"

I can almost hear her rolling her eyes. How is that even possible?

"I am starting to regret allowing you to develop your own personality," I grumble.

"I love you too Peter," FABAE gently says.

I smile and start swinging around the city, waiting for anything to happen.

"The police channel has sprung to life. There seems to have been a robbery at a jewelry store resulting in a car chase." FABAE states before showing me a map of the city, the path I should follow highlighted in yellow, "You should catch up to them in 3 minutes or less if they follow my estimated route."

"Okay, thanks. FABAE, please update my route if they veer from your prediction," I ask, already swinging along the yellow line.

"Of course Peter."

When I catch up to the car I use my momentum to swing onto the top of it, landing with a thump. I hear one of the two robbers ask, "What was that?"

I pop my head over the side and look at them through the passenger window and yell over the wind whistling through my ears, "Haven't you ever been taught that stealing is bad?"

The guy next to me jumps back giving a small shriek of surprise. The driver glances at me, "Spider-Man. Didn't expect to see you here." He pulls out a gun and starts trying to shoot me while keeping one eye on the road.

My spidey sense goes off telling me to dodge right, and I do so in the nick of time, "Hey! Do you have a license for that gun? Besides, don't you know that it is scientifically impossible to multitask?"

He growls as I switch sides of the car, leaning over to punch out the drivers side window. Before the shooter can react, I web the gun away from him, cocoon him up, and stick him to a passing lamp post. I hop into the driver's seat and web up his literal partner in crime before pushing down on the brake and stopping the car.

I step out and wait for the police to make sure these guys get taken care of. They come screeching to a halt beside me with their lights and sirens on. I move out of the way and silently watch as they go and take the robbers and jewels into custody. One of the head officers approaches me, "Thanks Spider-Man. This could have ended up a lot worse."

I smile even though she can't see it, "No, thank you ma'am. You all are the real heroes of this city." I salute her and swing off before she can respond.

I sit down on the roof of an office building and look out over the city, the people below ignorant of the true darkness of this world.

"Nice job with the car chase Peter," FABAE says to me, her voice laced with her version of pride.

I swing my legs against the wall like window-wipers against the windshield of a car, "Awww, thanks." I sit there for a few minutes in silence, enjoying being out on Patrol, before sighing, "FABAE?"

"Yes Peter?"

"Is there anything going on right now?"

"Sorry Peter, but I am not picking anything up."

I groan and flop on my back, still swinging my legs. I check the time again: 11:26pm. I still have a bit before I have to head back. My phone buzzes and I pull it out.

May

My friends just left. I will be in my room. Please let me know when you are home.

Peter

Will do   :))

<3

I pause, my thumbs still hovering over the screen. Well, if I have my phone out, I might as well use it... I switch over to the chat with Mr. Insomniac.

Peter

What's up?
