22. Shadows on the Horizon
A/N: I'm not super happy about this chapter, but I hope you enjoy it anyways!
Thanks for continuing to be patient with me. You guys are AMAZING! <3
Peter's POV:
Stepping into the intern lab, I'm immediately approached by Matt, "Hey Peter! You've finished everything you're assigned right? You're just working on personal projects?"
"Yes?"
Matt smiles, "So does that mean you're willing to deliver coffee to floor thirty-eight for me again? I'm so sorry to keep asking this of you, it's just been a huge help."
I smile back, "Oh, it's no problem."
"Great! Thank you so so much," He transfers two coffee cups over to me and nods towards the elevator, "I think you know the drill by now."
"Yup, I do," I head towards the elevator and step in, "Hey Fri! I'm supposed to be delivering these coffee's to floor thirty-eight again."
"Very well Peter," The elevator starts to go up, "Please remember to not touch anything without permission."
"Will do Fri," I step out when the elevator stops and set the coffee down on the table, my eyes catching on the half-solved equation on the whiteboard. I study it for a moment before asking FRIDAY for permission to grab a paper and pen. Once it's granted, I copy down the equation and get to work.
Without any prompting, I start to hum a tune I was listening to on the way here that's been stuck on loop in my head ever since. I bob my head slightly to the beat as my pen glides across the paper and, after getting stuck a few times, I finally finish the equation, lifting it up with a small shout of triumph, "Yes!"
Still bobbing my head to the beat, I study the assortment of magnets on the whiteboard next to me, finally picking a Toothless magnet and magnetizing my solution next to the unfinished work, "There."
Satisfied, I ask one last question before I leave, "Hey FRIDAY? Can you please make sure the owner of this lab sees my paper?"
"Why don't you just show him yourself?" A voice behind me says.
Tony's POV:
I just finished reading the last page of a stack of papers when I hear the elevator to my lab ding and Bruce's voice, "Tony?"
"I'm in here!" I call out, swiveling in my wheeled chair to face the doorway.
"What're you doing in here?" Bruce asks in bewilderment once he sets eyes on me.
"Well you remember that kid I told you about? The one that you said should be my personal intern if he passed my tests?"
"Yes..."
"Well he passed my tests with flying colors and I also found these," I gesture to the papers in front of me, "Which just proves my point. Although they bring up a couple questions too..."
Bruce steps closer and peers down curiously at the stack of papers, the top of which has a big red 100% circled on it with a little 'Wow! Good job!' right next to it, "And these are?"
"This is the standard intern test that only you and me have ever gotten one-hundred percent in. This kid managed to not only get one-hundred percent, but his answers to the last page of questions that are like 'What are your goals in life?' and 'What is your greatest accomplishment?' just prove how amazing of a person he is as a whole! I mean, just read his answer to the question that asks how he can best make a difference in the world." I flip to the last page and slide it over to Bruce, who quietly reads it.
"Wow," he studies it for another moment before shifting slightly so that he can point to the kid's formula of life, "What do you think this equation is?"
I shrug, "I'm just as curious about it as you."
A brief moment of silence before I clap my hands together, "Anywho! Why I'm in here is because the intern's supposed to be coming up soon to deliver coffee."
Bruce raises an eyebrow, "And this has you hiding away in a side room of your lab where he can't see you because...?"
"Because I have one more equation to test him on that I haven't been able to solve yet, and then I'm going to pop on out and surprise him!"
Bruce chuckles, "You just want an excuse to make a grand entrance."
"What? No."
"Tony, you can't deny it. I know you too well for that."
I shoot him a glare before pushing my chair over to some monitors, "Moving on! I'm not expecting him to solve the equation, but I want to give him a chance. So I've set up these monitors so that Fri can stream the security footage to us so we can watch the kid give it a go."
"When's he supposed to come up?"
"Any moment now I believe. I'm actually surprised that he hasn't s-" I'm cut off by the sound of the elevator opening. I look towards Bruce and gesture at him to come watch with me before turning my attention to the screen.
I watch as the kid sets the coffee down on the table, notices the unsolved equation, and picks up a pen and paper with permission. He looks at the equation on the board before copying it down onto the top of his paper. As he's working on his attempt to solve the equation, a tune starts to play through the security feed.
My eyebrows scrunch together, "Is he- is he humming?" I look over at Bruce who just shrugs.
Turning back towards the screen my eyes widen as I watch the kid give a little shout of triumph and magnet his apparently-solved equation to the whiteboard.
Bruce raises his eyebrows, impressed, "Did he just solve that? Tony, I thought you haven't figured this equation out yet."
"I haven't!"
I stand up and walk towards the door, arriving at the doorway to the lab just in time to hear the kid's voice, "Hey FRIDAY? Can you please make sure the owner of this lab sees my paper?"
I lean against the doorway and speak up, "Why don't you just show him yourself?"
Peter's POV:
My head whips around and my eyes widen when I see the Tony Stark just casually leaning against a doorframe.
Silence descends until I finally manage to stutter, "You're- you're Tony Stark."
He raises an eyebrow, "Really? Thanks for telling me, I wasn't sure."
"Stop being mean to him Tony!" I watch as the Bruce Banner steps out from behind the Tony Stark, "Don't worry, he really likes you, he's just attempting to keep up his cold and calculated manly vibes."
Dr. Stark squawks, "Attempting?! I think you mean succeeding!"
A quiet giggle escapes me when Dr. Banner shoots me an exasperated look, "Well now you definitely aren't if you even were in the first place."
"Well excuse you," Dr. Stark huffs.
Dr. Banner smiles and fondly shakes his head before approaching me and holding out his hand, "Hi! It's nice to meet you, I'm Bruce Banner."
I stare at the hand for a moment before mentally slapping myself into gear again and shaking it, "I have read all of your published papers and absolutely love your theory about how certain amounts of radiation would affect the evolution of a species."
Dr. Banner blinks for a moment as if he's caught by surprise before his smile warms, "Why thank you!"
Dr. Stark saunters up to stand next to Dr. Banner, "And I'm Tony Stark. It's nice to finally meet you face-to-face. I've had my eye on you for a while and would love to ask you some questions."
"R-really Dr. Stark?" I feel my cheeks start to heat up.
"Yes really, and no need for this doctor nonsense. Call me Tony, kid."
"Okay Mr. Stark."
Mr. Stark points a finger at me, "No, wrong. It's Tony."
Dr. Banner interrupts, "Anyways, Mr. Stark here was curious about what your plans for the rest of your internship were."
Mr. Stark nods, "Because you have successfully caught my attention and impressed me, which isn't a small feat mind you, and so I'd like to invite you to spend the rest of your internship up here with me, as my personal intern. Of course, you might still end up spending a little bit of time down with the other interns, but that probably won't happen a ton."
Shock spreads through me as I try to process the offer, "You want me to be your personal intern?"
"Yup."
"I just..." I flounder for words before blurting out my most prevailing thought, "Why?"
Mr. Stark pauses and his eyebrows scrunch together, "Did you just ask why?" He turns to Dr. Banner, "This kid just asked me why, like it isn't obvious!"
Mr. Stark turns back to me, "Kid, you're a literal genius. That equation you just solved," He points to the paper magnetized to the whiteboard, "I have been struggling to solve that equation. And just look at you! You're such a nice kid!" He points at me, "Don't doubt yourself like that kid. Give yourself some credit."
I find myself just staring at him, at a loss for words.
Dr. Banner attempts to suppress his smile, "I think you broke him."
"Well I sure hope not. It'd be sad if I broke my intern within the first few minutes of meeting him."
"Well you do tend to have that effect on people."
Mr. Stark turns to stare at Dr. Banner, "And what's that supposed to mean?"
Dr. Banner smiles and shrugs, "I don't know. You tell me."
I feel myself loosening up from their banter and finally find my voice again, "Um, I would absolutely love to be your personal intern if that's okay."
"Of course it's okay kid," Mr. Stark states, "And since you're accepting, just stay up here with me for the rest of today and meet me here when you come back."
Dr. Banner claps his hands together, "Well, now that that's figured out, I need to head back down to my lab and get an experiment started. It was very nice to meet you Peter. Let me know if Tony's bothering you and you need saving. I'll gladly steal you for myself."
"Will do Dr. Banner," I mumble before watching him give us one last smile and wave before the elevator doors close.
Mr. Stark turns to me, "Would you like to learn what the equation you just solved is for?"
I smile hesitantly, "That would be amazing."
"Great!" Mr. Stark walks over to a nearby table and gestures over it, opening up a blue hologram. Blueprints for a type of straw pops up, "I was presented with an idea of creating an affordable water filtration device that could be distributed to poorer countries that struggle to get clean water to their population. I also was thinking of making it as portable as possible, which is where I got the straw idea. The equation you just solved was figuring out which combination of filters was the best at filtering out certain ratios of contaminants in the water."
"So now that the equation is solved you can start working on fitting the straw together with the new filter in a way that works," I add.
"Exactly. I'm also working on making this filter design adaptable so that it can be installed into various types of piping systems so that people won't have to always drink out of a straw," Mr. Stark turns to me, "Would you like to get started?"
"Yes!'
* * * *
A couple hours later, me and Mr. Stark are startled out of the zone by FRIDAY's voice, "Boss, I believe it's time for Peter to head home."
"Really? What time is it?"
"It's 6:30pm boss."
"Wow, time really flies by when you're in the zone," Mr. Stark remarks before turning to face me, "Well, don't forget to come meet me here next time and always eat your vegetables."
I smile and head towards the elevator, "Will do Mr. Stark. I'll see you in a couple days!"
"Bye kid," Is the last thing I hear before the elevator doors close.
"I'm so proud of you Peter," FABAE says suddenly from my earpiece as the elevator starts to head down."
"Thanks FABAE!" I chirp, stepping into the lobby once the doors open, "I'm super excited! I'm nervous I'm going to mess up though."
"You'll do great, there's no need to worry," FABAE reassures.
I push out the doors and into the street, heading towards the subway. I open my mouth to reply but am cut off by the sound of my phone ringing. Pulling it out of my pocket, I see Ned's name.
Accepting the call, I hold the phone up to my ear and hear Ned ask, "Peter, have you seen the news?"
"No, I just barely got out of my internship," I bounce slightly each step as excitement bubbles up in me regarding sharing the good news with my best friend, "But Ned, guess what happened!"
"Peter."
"I'm still having a hard time understanding that this actually happened to me and wasn't a dream-"
"Peter."
"-and I'm so happy but am super nervous about messing up. I mean, he's my hero and that's intimidating. I mean, what if-"
"PETER!"
My mouth snaps closed at Ned's shout, my brain finally grasping his worried tone, "Ned? What's wrong?"
"Peter, it's the Green Goblin. He's escaped prison. And he's coming after you."
