17. I'm TRYING Not To Hurt You!
A/N: Hey y'all! Happy New Years Eve! To celebrate, I decided to post a chapter early. I hope you all enjoy!
I don't want to be the one that starts the fight, so I just stand there awkwardly, waiting for something to happen.
Within a few seconds my spidey senses go off.
Bullet. Move left.
I quickly step to my left and a bullet speeds through the space where my leg used to be. Stepping to my left again, I dodge an arrow.
I hone myself into my spidey senses, listening intently to them, knowing that they've been the reason I've made it out of so many fights alive.
I start backflipping over and sliding under bullets, knives, arrows, beams of energy, and a swooping Falcon. As I do so, I make sure to stay away from Vision, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, and Captain America. I really don't want to have to go into hand-to-hand combat with them. If I do that, the chances of this battle ending with serious injuries dramatically increase.
"Peter!" FABAE shouts at me.
I startle and jerk out of my groove, leading to a bullet grazing my side. I hiss in pain but continue to dodge the attacks, hoping that I won't have to go into the offensive. I really don't want to have to injure the Avengers.
I click through my teeth, activating the silencer in my mask. When the sounds of my grunts as I dodge all of the attacks go silent, the Avengers faces show surprise, some morphing into suspicion.
"Now is not the time FABAE," I warn her as I backflip off of the side of a shed to avoid a repulsor blast.
"I know you said not to bother you much on your Patrols, but I am scared for you Peter."
"Well, you're not the only one."
"I am just reminding you that I am always here for you. And if something happens, I will protect you." FABAE says.
I raise my eyebrows at her as I web Falcon to the side of a building, cushioning his head so it doesn't smack against the brick. He gives me a look of frustration, but surprise shines through his eyes at my efforts to protect him. Two down, six to go.
I go back to speaking to FABAE, "The way you said that almost sounded like a threat."
"It is. Towards the Avengers. If they seriously hurt my baby and you can't do anything about it, they will regret messing with us."
I shake my head at her and roll my eyes, "One, I am not a baby. And two, I didn't know you had a dark side."
"I am very well rounded Peter. You made me that way," FABAE says gratefully.
"Well, I am glad you haven't used that to your advantage in a bad way," Relief radiates between those words. FABAE has no idea how scared I was that I would create an A.I. who would make bad decisions. But now, I can't imagine not having FABAE.
While being lost in those worries, I stop focusing as much on my spidey sense. I shout out in pain when a beam of energy hits my leg, burning me. I stumble back as my body goes into shock, my healing factor kicking in.
"I will be quiet now Peter," FABAE says, guilt and an apology in her tone.
"Thanks," I grunt out.
With the conversation over, I click through my teeth again, deactivating the silencer.
I turn towards Iron Man, "Ow! That hurt!"
"That's the point," he replies.
I continue to avoid the attacks, noticing how frustrated the Avengers are getting, especially the ones that I am actively avoiding.
Even though I am pushing through the pain of the repulsor beam, every time I land on my leg, I hiss in pain, praying that my healing factor will move quicker.
Another tingling in my head warns me to look in the direction of Scarlet Witch. When our eyes meet, I see her intentions of coming back into the fight.
I continue to dodge while making my way over to her. When she realizes that I'm heading towards her, she starts to struggle against the webs holding her to the wall. Luckily, Vision hasn't noticed yet that I am heading towards her. If he did, he would freak.
Shield. Front left side.
Without looking, I reach out and grab it like a frisbee. This will come in handy.
I give Captain America an apologetic look for taking his beloved shield, trying to convey that I will give it back. I don't think he got the message. Oh well.
I slide my hand through the straps on the back of the shield, using it to block the assortment of attacks, giving me a much needed breather. I work my way over to Wanda, who increasingly struggles against the webs as I get closer.
Vision realizes that I'm heading towards Wanda and starts to panic.
"No!" He yells.
Sheesh. Why does everyone think I'm going to hurt her?
Since I am so busy keeping myself from getting incapitated, I can't change my webshooters settings on my own, "Hey FABAE?"
"Yes Peter?"
"Can you change my web settings to the one I created to keep Vision contained?"
"Will do."
I hear the click with my advanced hearing as the settings change, moving different small cartridges in place that will create the web that I want.
"Thanks," I breathe out as Vision finally decides to up his game and attack.
I dodge his repulsor blasts and charge at him head-on. Confusion flits across his face as he tries to figure out my attack plan with that newfangled mind of his. Thankfully, I'm the best at being unpredictable. I mean, that is how I beat Taskmaster.
Launching myself at him, I prepare myself for my next move. Right before I reach him, I shoot out a web towards the building right next to us. Giving a sharp yank, I pull myself in that direction. Letting go, I land on the wall, cushioning myself by going into a crouch. I immediately take that energy and launch myself upwards in his direction, gracefully flipping over him. I twist myself midair so that I'm facing him as I land. Reaching out my arms, I web him to the same wall as Wanda right when he turns around to face me. I quickly shoot a small web onto the stone on his forehead.
Vision goes to use his powers to escape, and when he can't, his eyes go wide and he stares at me in disbelief.
My breath is heavy and my leg burns in pain from the intense use of it. I realize while standing there and catching my breath that the attacks had stopped. I look around and realize that the rest of the Avengers were also staring at me in disbelief.
I give them a brief and exhausted smile and wave before everyone snaps out of their daze and continues the fight.
After a moment, I'm finally able to move next to Wanda, blocking everything with the shield now that my back is covered by the building she is webbed to.
Her eyes have gone wide at her helplessness, and thankfully, her panic has prevented her from remembering what she has the power to do, even webbed up to a wall.
I look her in the eye, "Hey, calm down. I'm not going to hurt you."
She freezes and gives me a look of confusion, "What?"
Vision does the same as he hears my reassurances.
"I'm not going to hurt you," I firmly state, "I'll always try my hardest not to hurt any of you."
"What? T-Then why are you trying so hard to get to me?"
"I don't want you to enter the fight. I know what you can do. I really don't want to hurt you if I can help it."
"How'd you know I was going to fight?" She asks warily.
"Let's just say that I can see it in your eyes," I reply.
I duck behind the shield as a bullet embeds itself into the brick, dangerously close to me.
"I'm just coming to warn you Miss. If you enter the fight, I'll have to web your eyes and ears to stop your senses and prevent you from doing anything. You would be left in the dark."
Wanda's eyes grow wide and she starts to struggle again.
I hold up my free hand in a reassuring gesture, "And I really really don't want to do that if I can help it. I've been there, done that. It's-" My voice breaks as I fight against unpleasant memories, "It's not fun."
The shield on my arm pings as I listen to my spidey sense and move it over a fraction, blocking another round of bullets, followed by an arrow.
Wanda and Vision notice my voice break and the spike of anxiety, leading to them staring at me with curiosity.
"No," I firmly say to Wanda, "I know you are curious, but you don't want to know. Trust me. Besides, I don't want to go through that pain in my head again, and I bet you don't want to either."
"What have you gone through Spider-Man?" Wanda asks. Vision intently listens, waiting for my answer.
An explosive arrow embeds itself in the wall next to me, just far enough away that it wouldn't harm Wanda. I quickly grab it and throw it where it wouldn't hurt anyone.
"I... I've gone through too much."
She opens her mouth to ask another question. I hold up my free hand quickly to stop her, "Please no. Let's leave it at that. At least for now."
Her mouth closes but her eyes still burn for answers.
I slightly flinch as my spidey sense goes off hard.
Wanda in danger. Arrow.
My head snaps around to look for Hawkeye. Wanda and Vision startle at my quick movement.
I spot Hawkeye quickly changing positions to get to me from above. He is keeping his eyes on me, meaning he doesn't see the loose wire stretching from a lighted sign to an outlet.
"Hawkeye, no!" I yell at him.
He looks away from me and spots the loose wire too late. He trips over it, causing the arrow that he has cocked to be released towards Wanda.
I don't have time to bring up Captain America's shield to block it, so I do the next best thing. I step in front of Wanda and take the arrow for her. It pierces my side and drives in deep, making me shout out in pain.
"Spider-Man!" Wanda cries out in concern.
I wave her off, my breath coming out in short bursts as I recover. Slowly, I stand up, blocking another round of bullets with the shield strapped to my arm. When there is a break in the attacks I reach over and grab the arrow, pulling it out with a shout of pain. Blood starts pouring from the wound.
"Switching web settings," FABAE informs.
"Thanks," I say breathlessly. I then shoot a sanitizing web at the hole in my side, sealing the wound till my advanced healing can get to it.
I need to finish this quickly.
As Hawkeye stands up from where he landed on the ground, I bolt towards a better position to fire a web at him.
"Switch the settings FABAE please."
"Done."
I shoot a web at Hawkeye and stick him to the billboard directly behind him, close enough that he doesn't get a headache from smacking his head against it. Four down, four to go.
I stop avoiding the Winter Soldier and let him come close to me and throw a punch. I easily block his metal arm by grabbing hold of his fist. I can't help but admire it up close, "Your metal arm is so cool!"
He gives me a surprised look right before I grab him and toss him over my shoulder, slamming him against the ground and quickly webbing him there. He gasps as the air is forced from his lungs.
"Sorry!" I apologize to him before turning and rushing towards Black Widow.
She shoots a round of bullets at me, which I block with the shield again. When I move the shield to my side to dash towards her, I'm faced with a knife flying towards me. Without thinking, I grab it out of the air and turn it towards her, my aim flawless.
The knife goes through her shirt, catching it with the wide hilt, and embedding itself into the brick, effectively pinning her to the wall. With her caught off guard, I'm able to web her to the wall. I run over to her and she gives me, not a fearful look, but a respectful one.
I lift my eyebrow at her and finally reach her. I grab the knife and pull it out, releasing her shirt from its tight hold against her neck, "Sorry, that was probably really uncomfortable."
She gives me a look of pure surprise, which I'm pretty sure is rare for her. I give her a smile before I web her knife to the wall right next to her so the others can't use it. Two more to go.
I turn towards Iron Man and Captain America, who are standing on the other side of the roof, "Please guys, can we just be done?"
"That's not how this works Spider-Man," Iron Man answers.
I groan, "That could be how this works."
Since they won't back down I decide to go for Captain America first, since he doesn't have his shield. I run towards them while blocking repulsor shots from Iron Man.
I push myself off of the ground and land behind Captain America. I hit him on his back with his shield, making him stumble. With Captain America off balance, I have the opportunity to web him down on the ground, cushioning his head as he falls so that it won't crack open against the cement.
He looks at me, shocked that I took him down so quickly.
I give him an apologetic smile, "Here, I think this is yours." I web the shield to the ground right next to him.
I take a deep breath and turn towards Iron Man, sad about what I am about to do, "I'm sorry Iron Man. I wish it didn't come to this."
"Changing settings," FABAE says. I give her my silent thanks.
"Sorry about what?" He asks, confused.
"This," I shoot out two webs, sticking them to his arc reactor. Electricity runs along the web lines and into Iron Man's arc reactor and suit. He shouts out in pain and falls to the ground a few feet away from Captain America. I web him there and rush over to him.
"Are you okay?" I ask him in concern.
His face plate raises and he groans, "Yeah, yeah. I'll be fine Captain."
"Umm, Tony?" Captain America hesitantly says.
"Yes?" Tony asks, finally catching his breath and looking around.
"That wasn't me."
"That wasn't... what?"
"That wasn't me. That was-"
I interrupt him, my concern and guilt making me not able to wait anymore, "Are you okay Iron Man? I set the settings to one that should only leave you breathless and stunned for a little bit, but it was only calculations."
Iron Man's eyes land on me and he looks at me in disbelief, "Umm... what?"
"Are you okay?!"
"Yes, I am."
I sag in relief, "Oh, good. I'm so sorry I had to do that. I really don't like hurting people."
"That's... That's okay Spider-Man."
I give him a nod and stumble over to the wall closest to me. I reach out a hand to support myself against it when all of the pain comes rushing to me as I allow myself to relax. I release a pained groan and lean more of my body weight against the wall.
"Are you okay Spider-Man?" Wanda asks.
I wave my hand at her and lean my back against the wall, "I'm... I'm fine. I've been through worse. You guys just did a small number on me."
Guilt and concern shows through all of their eyes as they look at me. I smile at them, "It's okay though. I should be fine in a few hours. I'm already healing."
Iron Man's face lights up, "Oh yeah! You have some form of advanced healing, don't you?"
"Yes, I do." I reply, wary of revealing too much.
He fires questions at me in his excitement, "How does it work? How fast is it? Does it-"
"Tony," Captain America firmly says, interrupting him.
He stops and seems to realize what he's doing, "Sorry."
"It's okay Sir. I just don't want to reveal much and now just isn't the time."
I bend over in pain, and take a deep breath. I lean my head against the wall with my eyes closed, letting the painful feeling wash over me, accepting it, and moving on. After a moment, the pain reduces and I sigh in relief. I can feel my healing factor working vigorously and my gratitude for it increases.
"Spider-Man?" the Winter Soldier asks hesitantly.
I open my eyes and look at them all, "It's okay. I'm going to be okay. I just need a minute."
"Does this stuff come out of you?" Hawkeye asks with slight disgust in his voice as he struggles to get out of the webs.
"No, I-"
"Spider-Man," A menacing voice growls behind me. Sadly, I recognize it.
I groan in frustration and pain. Really?
I turn around to face the voice, "Scorpio."
