Chapter 10- Unexpected Attack
Jordan knew Tom was mad at him. He couldn't have made it more obvious.
Tom was ignoring him, and not even trying to hide it. Every time Jordan would kneel down to allow Tom to climb on, his rider would brush past him as though he never saw the dragon, leaving Jordan hurt and upset. But in an instant, like the smaller dragon knew, Andor would snuggle into his fur, making him feel a bit better, but it did little to heal Jordan from the feeling of being abandon.
Tom felt a twinge of guilt every time he glared at the celestial. He knew that young dragons needed a lot of attention. He knew that celestials were naturally protective; it was in their nature. The rider was upset at himself that he was being so selfish.
To put it simply, the walk was silent and tense.
It was relaxing, in a way. No one was screaming, no one was being obnoxious, and everyone was quiet.
Jordan felt Andor shift his fur. Turning slightly, he gave a questioning croon to him. Andor jumped slightly, not expecting the larger dragon to notice. Andor nuzzled him, as if saying 'don't worry about it'. The celestial, still unconvinced, nodded and turned around.
Andor was nervous and fidgety, unable to find a comfortable spot to sit in. It didn't help the worry growing in his chest.
Tom glared out of the corner of his eye at the two. He sighed and internally cursed at himself.
The kid's probably nervous about being away from his home, he reasoned. He'll be over it in a while.
Tom turned to Tucker, who actually decided to walk on the ground instead of riding Sonja.
"Where are we going, anyways?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"We're going to some sort of cave," he replied, shifting a map he had conveniently found in Andor's city that showed the whole region. It was probably extremely outdated, but it was the only thing they had. "According to this, it should be about a days journey away, without breaks. So, no one can go to the bathroom."
Sonja huffed and rolled her eyes from behind him, the force of the wind nearly knocking them over.
"Hey!" Tucker growled. "Watch it!"
The giant dog made a mock whine sound, sticking her tongue out at her rider. Wag, whom was perched on her back, snickered.
"Perhaps you should not fight with the dragon 10 times bigger than you."
"Oh, shut up Wag," the salty rider grumbled, glaring down at the map and ignoring the chuckles from the dragons and Tom.
The fun moment was cut short, just like most things they did. A deafening roar spilt the air, and their eardrums. Unlike the mother dragon they encountered earlier, this roar was nothing but pure anger.
Their attention immediately went to the sky, the source of the threat. Through the thick tree tops, Tom could vaguely make out the silhouette of a dragon the same size, if not larger than Sonja, soar dangerously close to the highest leaves of the trees.
"Duck down," Wag advised immediately, crouching further into Sonj's thick coat.
Everyone attempted to hide themselves, ducking into bushes and crouching low to the ground, effectively splitting the group up.
For a few moments, there was nothing but silence. The relief moment quickly diminished and the dragon landed in front of them with a loud THUMP, crushing the trees to the ground. The dragon growled before releasing another roar from his throat.
The dragon was some sort of firedrake, a typical dragon most would think of. His scales were a dusty, dull red mixed with brown, but the hard plates on his chest and underbelly were a shining gold color, and the scales around his shoulders were silver. The short fur lining his spine was black, as was his muzzle. Glaring down at them with dark aqua eyes, the dragon did NOT look extremely pleased.
Tom's breath hitched in his throat as the firedrake looked at his with glittering eyes. The large dragon extended a clawed hand, reaching down to grab him. As much as he wanted to run, Tom was paralyzed with fear, captivated by the dragon's intense stare.
He was vaguely aware that his friends jumped up to grab him and pull him away from the approaching talons. But they were too far away, and there was no time. The dragon was too quick.
Tom braced himself, but nothing happened, and all he heard was a sharp cracking sound. Snapping his eyes open, he let out the breath he didn't know he was holding.
The dragon roared, but this time in pain, reeling back and gripping his bloody hand. Jordan growled, standing protectively in front of his rider. Blood dripped from his jaws, and below him was little shards of red and brown scales.
Jordan had bit right through the dragon's thick scales.
Turning around, Jordan bumped his head under Tom's arms, helping him up and giving him a small, apologetic smile. Ruffling Jordan's fur, he glared up at the dragon.
"C'MERE, MOTHERFUCKER!" he screamed up at the furious firedrake. "GIVE US ALL YOU GOT!"
With a final, determined roar, the dragon crouched and snapped his jaws dangerously close to them. Sonja gave his muzzle a sharp swipe as he pulled back, effectively drawing a small amount of blood.
"Try to aim for his eyes!" Wag called from his spot a littl ways away. He was leaned back on his haunches, holding Andor back and away from the fight. To be honest, Wag wasn't much of a fighter, anyways. "Every dragons weakness is their eyes!"
Giving a single nod to let him know they heard him, Tom jumped on Jordan's back, ordering the celestial to dart between his legs, confusing the larger dragon. Tucker and Sonja lunged forward, Sonja's strong jaws closing around his leg.
Growling in irritation, he lowered his head to grab the dog dragon. Jordan and Tom raced from between his legs, scratching at his vulnerable eye. Screeching in pain, the dragon reeled back for a second time, except this time he rose into the air, grabbing his eye. Glaring at them, he flew off rather spastically.
"We did it," Tucker said, grinning. "We destroyed that guy!"
Tom laughed and climbed off of his dragon, bumping his muzzle lightly.
"I wouldn't celebrate quite yet," Wag interrupted with a frightened Andor on his back. "Dragons keep grudges, especially ones with a reputation. He'll be back."
