The more he saw and heard, the more Felix truly understood just how wide the gap between the ultra rich and the middle class was.
"Umm, this can't be it. Right?" Felix had questioned as Hyunjin pulled their car into the driveway of what looked like more of a resort than a "beach house," as he'd called it.
Hyunjin only gave the younger a funny look as they got out, as if not understanding what he was on about.
"Huh? Why, what's wrong?"
"Nothing!" Felix insisted, too distracted staring at the building to even take out his bags, like Hyunjin was doing. "It's just that... it's so..."
He couldn't even put it into words. The boho styled building appeared to have two floors, a multitude of rooms, and Felix swore to god he could see the edge of a swimming pool out back.
"Well, yeah?" Hyunjin handed Felix's bags to him instead and slammed the trunk. "It's a beach house. What were you expecting?"
Not this. Definitely not this, Felix had thought. Damn rich people and their huge mansion-looking houses. If the elder didn't seem fazed at all by this, Felix was almost scared to ask what his regular house looked like.
After an hour or so, when they were finally done dragging their bags and a few food items inside, Felix sat down on the hardwood floor in the middle of the large living room. It was a rather nicely decorated space, but it was hell to lug their personal belongings into the upstairs bedrooms, and he was overwhelmingly tired.
Hyunjin, who'd been digging through the kitchen cabinets in order to scope out what was already available to them, took notice of the smaller boy sitting on the floor. He wandered over with a light and amused smile.
"Couch too expensive for you?" Hyunjin said jokingly, taking a seat next to Felix.
"No," Felix replied, monotone. "Sometimes people just feel like being on the floor," he continued, laying down and feeling the cold of the untouched wood against his back.
The elder boy giggled at this, eyes trained on the other's actions. "Suit yourself," he commented. "I was raised with proper manners. Which means not laying on the floor around guests," he spoke teasingly.
Felix gave him a gentle glare. "Yeah, okay, your highness. You'd join me on the floor if you were any fun."
A small grin painted itself across Hyunjin's face as he carefully lay down next to the shorter boy, giving him a flick on the shoulder just because. "Happy? You've made me a disgrace to my lineage by having me do this," he asked with a mischievous tone, totally joking.
"You already renounced your lineage when you ran away," Felix responded. "Fuck them etiquette classes."
"Ahh, you have such a lovely way with words," Hyunjin said with a mix of sweetness and sarcasm, making the younger hold back his laughter.
The same lazy smile remained on his face as he reached over, twirling a lock of Felix's hair for a moment.
"Say goodbye to this color. You'll be blonde soon," he commented in an almost ominous way.
"Don't remind me," he whined. "We better not screw it up, I'm not ready to go bald."
"I promise I won't make you bald," Hyunjin stated determinedly. "I researched how to use bleach just for this. I watched so many YouTube videos."
Felix lightly snorted at this. "YouTube videos? Oh god, maybe we should just go to a salon..."
"Lix!" Hyunjin gently hit his shoulder. "Trust me. I can do it, we're not paying a salon."
A comfortable silence took hold of the two, who both laid on their backs now, staring up at the high ceiling above them. The taller boy fidgeted with the hem of his sweatshirt, unsure of what to say next.
"You won't be stuck on the couch anymore," he brought up after a moment.
"Hm?"
"This place has two bedrooms. So you won't be banished to a crappy motel couch now," Hyunjin elaborated.
Felix gave a joking sigh. "Sad. And to think I was just getting used to the couch lifestyle," he spoke, the playfulness masking a strange negative feeling he felt bubbling up inside him.
It wasn't entirely a lie, after all. He had gotten rather used to their dynamic in a small motel room... and now, with a whole house at their disposal, he couldn't help but wonder how things would change.
"Yeah, it's gonna be boring not having to fight over the same bathroom," the elder agreed, both laughing at the statement.
"Speaking of that, by the way," Hyunjin changed the topic. "I need to go try to take a shower. I say try, because I have no idea if the bathroom has running water and I need to check," he announced, sitting up from the floor.
"Mm, okay," Felix waved him off. "Good luck. Have fun," he dismissed, Hyunjin only rolling his eyes in response as he stood up.
Well, at least while Hyunjin was off doing whatever, it would give Felix some time to organize stuff in his new room. It was the one closest to the stairway, thankfully, which meant that carrying items up and down wasn't as bad as it could've been.
It almost felt wrong, being in a house like this again. He crept up the stairs quietly, despite hearing the wooden steps creak under his weight as he went up. Sure, it was nice to potentially have a little more privacy now... but having this much space to himself was also somewhat uncomfortable.
The bedroom he'd been given was spacious, as well, and in any normal situation Felix would've immediately gotten to decorating and filling the space with more items. Perhaps, in a past life, he'd been a rabbit, or fox, or some sort of other burrowing animal that preferred coziness over territory, because this was not the ideal situation.
As the time passed, Felix had investigated every corner of the upper floor by himself, and currently sat in bed, browsing through a magazine he'd found in one of the cupboards. For what it was worth, at least these rich people seemed to be capable of choosing some good ass pillows and bedsheets, because he was comfortable as hell right now.
A little knock came at the door, to which Felix looked up with curiosity.
"Yeah?" he called out, before the door opened just a little bit.
"Can I come in?" came Hyunjin's voice, and the younger automatically said that he could, in response.
The door swung open at this, and Hyunjin hurried over, practically jumping next to Felix as he sat on the edge of the bed.
"Look at this!" he said, excited, holding his arms out as to show off the garment he was wearing.
The elder, clearly having just taken a shower from his messy wet hair, was also dressed in perhaps the most ridiculous, fluffy pink bathrobe that Felix had ever seen.
He had to keep himself from laughing. "What..." he said, covering his mouth to stop the giggles from pouring out. "What the hell is that?"
"Right?" Hyunjin agreed. "Feel it though. I can't imagine how much this must have cost."
Felix, going along with it, reached out to feel the fabric of Hyunjin's sleeve... and immediately regretted it, because it felt extremely soft and suddenly he was jealous of the other for being able to wear it.
"Damn rich people," he mumbled for what felt like the hundredth time in the last few days, and Hyunjin only laughed in response.
"If you want one there's multiple in the bathroom down the hall," the elder pointed out, glancing towards the area in question.
"No," Felix crossed his arms. "I have morals. That's probably made of like.... unethically harvested llama wool or something—"
"You're so dramatic," Hyunjin cut him off, shoving him a little to the side as to lay down next to him on the bed.
"Wearing a more expensive bathrobe isn't gonna kill you."
"Ah— your hair! Wait," Felix groaned as Hyunjin laid down on his pillow, with his hair still wet from the shower.
"Why? You couldn't have dried it first?"
"It'll dry on its own," Hyunjin responded with an evil grin. "Eventually."
Felix only pouted at this for a second, but found he couldn't stay mad at the elder for too long... especially not with a smile as pretty as that. It was too late anyway, and now he'd just have to suffer with his pillow being damp for a while.
He was still allowed to be salty about it, though, and Felix stood up from the bed, abandoning Hyunjin there as he walked out into the hallway.
"Hey—" Hyunjin called out, concerned. "Where are you going?"
"Getting a towel!" he yelled back, headed towards the bathroom in search of one. If the elder was too stubborn, he guessed he would just have to get things done himself.
He dug around for a little bit, finally finding one, and hurried back to his bedroom before the elder could do anything stupid with his stuff.
"Seriously," Felix rambled as he walked back into his room. "You shouldn't sleep with wet hair, it's bad."
"Yeah, well, I'm lazy," Hyunjin answered, still laying on the mattress. "I've got priorities."
Felix held the towel out to the other boy. "Your priority should be sparing my poor pillow," he said as he crawled back onto the bed, sitting criss cross next to Hyunjin.
Hyunjin didn't take it, and Felix rolled his eyes in response. "Fine," he said, unfolding the towel himself. "Sit up then."
Hyunjin, raising an eyebrow, did as told, propping himself up as Felix moved behind him. He draped the towel over Hyunjin's head, gently rubbing it back and forth in an attempt to get some of the water out.
"You know, a hair dryer would be more helpful," he remarked, despite continuing to dry his hair with the small towel.
The elder only gave a little laugh in reply, leaning his head back as to make it easier for the younger to dry. Truthfully, Felix had never done this to anyone but himself; not even Chan, amazingly, and he was just a tiny bit afraid of accidentally hurting him somehow.
"Hey, Felix?" Hyunjin spoke up after a few minutes, making the boy pause his work.
"Yeah?" Felix signaled that he was listening as he sat the towel down on his lap.
"How long do you think we'll be stuck like this?" the elder questioned, turning back to look at him.
Felix found himself at a loss for words momentarily, having caught the taller's gaze.
"Um, I dunno... a while, probably. I can't go back home until—" Felix stopped speaking immediately at the realization of what he was about to say.
"Anyway, you're the one we're more concerned about," he changed the subject. "Your family is actually dangerous for you. Mine is completely fine."
Hyunjin lightly chuckled at this. "Something tells me they're not fine, considering you ran away," he spoke with a little sarcasm.
Felix huffed at this. "Yeah, well, at least mine didn't try to kill me."
"Touché," Hyunjin accepted it, stretching out his arms for a moment. He glanced at a clock sitting atop the bedside table for a moment, seemingly contemplating something.
"I'm gonna go try to cook something, I think," he decided, standing up sluggishly. "If you hear fire alarms start going off, you already know what's happened."
Felix could only grin at this as he shook his head.
"You better not set the house on fire, the police will show up," he called after the taller boy as he padded towards the exit of the room.
And just like that, once again Hyunjin had disappeared from his sight. Felix took a breath as he laid down on the mattress— cringing a bit as he felt the damp pillowcase up against his neck, although it did carry just the slightest hint of fruit scented shampoo.
He knew it would take some time to get used to this new system, but with company, perhaps it wouldn't be that bad. Felix could already imagine Jisung and Chan losing their minds at the idea of him staying in such a lavish vacation home, one that Felix's family totally would not have been able to afford... not that they had enough money for normal vacations, anyway.
Either way, he had to find something to do to occupy himself now, and thus he got to laying out all of his clothes on the bed, picking out outfits for the future, just because.
Perhaps he could be a little selfish and ask Hyunjin to get him some new clothes? Felix wouldn't bother asking whether he'd paid for them or not, although he would probably feel a little guilty while wondering.
Someday, he might even have to learn the other's "borrowing" techniques, if he wanted to help out.
But, today was not that day... and for now? Felix decided he was just going to take a long nap.
