Chapter-16: 'Are we good?'
"Why not let's stop this. I get it you have great ideas but I am tired. Let's just have a walk," Asher whines, making me laugh.
"We haven't even done anything significant yet. We have started working for only an hour. How can you be tired?" I put my iPad aside, shaking my head at him.
"I just didn't imagine this day going like this," he pouts.
"What did you plan?" I ask, propping my head on my arms.
"Well, would you like to find out?" He questions.
"What if I don't enjoy it?" I raise my eyebrows at him.
"Trust me, you will. Willing to explore?" He looks at me, waiting for my answer.
I look at him, bobbing my head to the side. I am not sure of what to do. What he is proposing to me sounds interesting, though.
"Fine. Let's do it," I say.
It's been forty minutes since we have left the cafe. Asher has been driving to some unknown place that I haven't been before.
"Where are we going? I don't even know this road," I ask for the tenth time now.
"Can you just relax and trust me? You have been pestering me with the same question for like a million times now," he says.
"Pffffft! Oh please," I say, "This was the tenth time. Stop exaggerating."
"That makes the average of you asking me the same question every four minutes," a soft laugh escapes his lips.
"Shut up!" I mutter.
After ten more agonizing minutes, the car comes to a halt in front of a shop.
"You will love it," Asher tells me before unbuckling his seatbelt.
We enter into the shop and long shelves of clothes can be seen. There was possibly everything.
"What is this place?" I ask him.
"It's a thrift store. You don't know about it?" He asks me.
"No. I have been in LA for more than a year and I have never seen this place. You have been here for only a few months and yet you know," I am surprised at him.
There are pretty good clothing items, shoes and at low prices. I start to take a look around.
"Lilian told me about this place. I have been here once with her. There is a house decor and interior section at the back. Let's check out!" He tells me and I squeal in excitement.
Once we are in the decor section, I am amazed by all the things around. It was a design heaven for me. There were cool woven baskets and wooden pieces. I found this cool section of lamps.
"Check this one out. It is so incredible," I say, "We can really use these items for the project."
"Yeah, sure!"
We start taking pictures of various items. There were furniture, shelves, vases, frames and everything you could think of. I hadn't enjoyed this much in a long time.
"What do you think of my dress?" Asher asks me. He was wearing a hot pink t-shirt with a faux-feather scarf and neon green framed glasses.
I laugh loudly at how insane he was looking. I look around and spot a bright red colour hat. I put it over his head and click a picture of him.
"That's better," I chuckle.
"Do I look sexy?" He asks, trying to pose and making weird fish faces.
"Absolutely... Not!" I shove him, laughing loudly. His chest moving under my hands, rumbling from his laughter.
Beside all the foolery that we were doing, we actually did buy something. I bought a wooden shelf for my room along with a painting for the living room. I also bought some clothes for me. Because, who ever has enough clothes!
"We found some great things for Richard and Emmanuel's house. We will show them to Gaby tomorrow," I say putting the stuff in the backseat.
"Sure. Would you like to go somewhere else too?" Asher asks me.
"What do you have in mind now?" I ask.
"Just somewhere!" He shrugs.
"You really creep me out," I laugh but still agree to his plan.
After a while, he stops the car in front of a large building with a big mural painted on one of its walls.
"This is called 'Cream Of The Crop'," he tells me.
"It's pretty. How come I have never seen this," I say.
"I don't know. Did you never step out while you were in college?" He asks me, looking amazed.
"I did. But not so often!" I tell him, "Let me show you one of my favourite murals."
We take a couple of photos together giving crazy poses in front of the mural before heading out to see my favourite one. After following directions from Google map, we finally reached South Broadway.
"Look!" I point out the '460 years of Chicano History' mural.
"It's wonderful!" He says.
"It's based on Chicano history and movement. It is so powerful and inspiring. There is Emiliano Zapata and Our Lady of Guadalupe," I show him, pointing out.
"It's 4'o o'clock. Would you like to grab a bite?" Asher asks me.
"Yeah, sure. Let's go to Hollywood." I say excitedly, "There is this Thai place I am craving for."
"Thai, it is then!" He chuckles.
The car was filled with music from the radio and our horrible voices ruining them perfectly. We finally reach the Thai bistro and place our order of crab rolls, green papaya salad, vegetarian zeed noodles along with garlic and pepper stir-fry.
"You amaze me sometimes. You have such a tiny figure and you have such a large appetite," Asher says looking at me in amusement.
"Asher Bradfort! Are you telling me, I am fat?" I raise my eyebrows at him.
"Not at all. You are a big eater but still manage to look so perfect."
"Workout," I answer him.
"The food here is delicious. This was my favourite place to eat. I would always order food from here. I have even tried almost everything on the menu except a few maybe," I tell him.
"I haven't been able to go to many eating places but I sure have gone sightseeing every possible place I could," He says.
The waiter places our order infront of us and we devour quickly.
"Isn't it delicious?" I ask Asher, taking a bite from my salad.
"Very much," he says.
After we were done, Asher suggested we take a walk around. We take a stroll, clicking pictures together and talking about random stuff. Like literally! He was telling me some alien invasion story that he saw on National Geographic. Truth to be told, l was kind of enjoying it. But the question was whether I was enjoying what Asher was telling me or how cute and excited he looked while he was telling it!
"Would you like to go to the beach?" He asks, bringing me out of my thoughts.
"Why not!"
**********
My feets feel the coolness of the sand near the shore as I walk on it leaving a trail of footprints. Asher was behind me, taking a picture of me saying that I should capture the moment.
I look in front of me, the sky in all shades of orange and red signalling the sun was about to set. Asher joins me on my side, holding his phone up to show me the picture.
"That can wait! Let's just enjoy this moment right now," I say.
"This looks beautiful," He says, staring at the sky in front. The calming sound of the sea, the cool breeze touching my face with all the colours of the sky as if a painter has taken all the time in the world to paint it carefully, it calmed me in a way that I never knew existed.
"I had a fun day today. I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you," I say.
"I had a wonderful time with you. Thank you for trusting me," he says.
We sit on sand, not bothered by waves washing over our feets or the sand sticking to our clothes. One of the students from the group who sat behind us was playing guitar.
"Music and sunset is a perfect combination," I say looking as the sun goes down the horizon.
"Adding you makes it more perfect to me," I hear him say. I turn my face and find him staring at me.
He leans down and his face is just a few inches away. I could hear him breathe. I could feel his hot breath fanning over my face. Our nose tips touch gently and my eyes flutter close. I feel my face burning as his lips brush mine.
"Can I?" He asks me, waiting for me to reply.
"Yes," I say almost instantly. At this very moment, I don't know if this is the right thing to do. But I want to see how it feels.
He closes the distance between us and places his lips on mine. A small spark of electricity flows through my entire body. His soft lips move against mine as he cups my cheek gently. My hands move around his neck and pull him towards me.
His phone starts ringing making him pull away from me. I mentally curse it for breaking the amazing kiss that I was having. We didn't even kiss for a minute and he had to pull away. Stupid phone!
"Yeah! I am coming back. I won't run away with your car Derek," he says making me laugh.
"That was my brother. Sorry," he says.
"It's fine," I tell him. Although, I was missing his lips on mine but I didn't show him. He raked his fingers through his hairs.
"We should probably go now or it will be late," he says standing and dusting the sand off his jeans.
"Sure," I say, doing the same.
We walk back to the car in silence. None of us say anything. Was the kiss a mistake to him, I wonder. Should we talk about the kiss? My head seems to explode with such questions.
Asher drops me off at the apartment. The car ride was painfully silent and I couldn't help but just look out of the window. I noticed Asher giving me side glances but didn't say anything. I get out of the car, taking my stuff before leaning down on the window.
"Thank you," I say.
"Mention not," he gives me a tight-lipped smile. I turn around and start to walk away.
"Hey Ella!" He says, making me stop and turn around to face him.
"Are we good?" He asks me.
"Yeah!" I say smiling at him. He smiles widely at my response before driving away.
