Chapter 1: New Beginnings
AN: Just a little blurb. Will be edited once season six starts up :)
Fifteen Weeks Later
"Lightning, please come back," I call, letting out a long intake of breath.
The black lab barks and spins around in a circle, chasing her tail. I smirk and shake my head.
"You're kind of an idiot, you know that?" I ask.
She only grins and bounds up to me, her tail wagging wildly. She doesn't leap up onto me, something I'm grateful for. My hand travels to my stomach, large and round. She sniffs the mound before spinning and dashing off in a different direction. I take a deep breath and keep walking after her.
"Hope! Hey!"
I look towards the voice, seeing Jessie walking towards me. She smiles pleasantly, a basket in her arms as we meet up.
"If you want, I can go pick up your laundry and do it with mine," she offers.
I smile. "Thanks Jess. That'd be great."
She glances at my lower torso. "I can't believe there's going to be another baby around here soon."
I nod, smiling weakly. "It's going to be different."
"Especially since it's your first child."
"Especially."
Jessie flicks some of her blonde hair over her shoulder, still keeping a pleasant smile on her face.
"Well, you look great. Let me know if you need anything."
"Thanks again!"
We separate, her walking to my house and me heading towards the horse pen. My jet black stallion, Buttons, whinnies excitedly when he sees Lightning and I approaching. I pet his mane, his soft muzzle nudging my cheek.
"Sorry boy. I still can't take you for a ride," I explain softly, shifting my weight a little.
Lightning sits down, using the fence post to scratch her back.
"BOO!"
I jump a little, spinning around. My good friend and fellow medical person, Elliot, smiles widely as he adjusts his glasses
"Don't scare me like that," I gasp, holding my heart dramatically.
He smirks, leaning against the post and hesitantly petting Buttons. "I thought I'd join your little pack of black mammals. Now you have three."
I frown. "You're making me sound racist."
He pokes my nose teasingly. "We're all mammals, and I'm black. I can explain that I'm black all I want, sweetie."
I roll my eyes and shove him lightly with my shoulder. "Fine." I glance over his shoulder towards the centre of town. "Any news from Aaron and Daryl?"
"Nothing. Those wolf guys Morgan told us about have seemingly disappeared." Elliot shrugs. "I suppose it's for the better. The last thing we need is conflict."
I rub my belly absentmindedly, sending up a silent prayer for our safety. The last few months have been quiet and peaceful, considering the events of the night of Reggie and Pete's death. Deanna hasn't quite been the same since then, and all of us have noticed. Still, change is happening around Alexandria. At least we have Morgan to help us out now. Rick and him combined truly are a force to be reckoned with.
"I think we'll be just fine. With all of you learning more about weapons, we're more prepared," I comment, tugging at the pendant of my necklace gently.
He nods in agreement. "Indeed." He runs a hand over his nearly bald head. "Of course, my little promotion to the main doctor has kept me busy."
"I wish I could help you more."
"Ah, you're pregnant. You're allowed to take work off."
Lightning barks and gets up, circling both mine and Elliot's legs before dashing away towards the gates. I grin, looking to my friend.
"They're back. Come on." I start to walk as fast as I can towards the gate.
He follows, smirking. "Watch out, we've got a speed demon on the loose."
I spin around, walking backwards and throwing my hands out to my sides as I grin jokingly. "I own this road."
We laugh, continuing our walk.
