016. Never Here
A gloomy mist took over Aera's mind. The need to find just any kind of logical explanation to what was happening tortured her brain. After a couple more minutes of eerie silence she, Jimin, Namjoon, Meisa and Jungkook had decided it was for the better to call it a night, sleep on it and see if tomorrow when they wake up things would still be as mind-splittingly confusing as they seemed.
Aera had the terrible feeling they would be worse.
She had never been a firm believer in paranormal phenomena, but if what Namjoon was saying turned out to be true, she would have to turn her beliefs around. She wondered whether he wasn't making it all up or whether he wasn't going crazy. Namjoon was the most rational person she knew, if he was capable of losing his mind then Aera feared for her own sanity.
Jimin wasn't taking it all that well either. On the way to walking her to her penthouse, he had the deepest frown she had ever seen on his face and had been as silent as a rock. It had been extremely unnerving for her. It seemed as there was something he wasn't telling her, or she was just being paranoid. However, she couldn't shake off the alarming, ominous feeling that crept up in her chest.
She let her lungs deflate in a long sigh when she finally entered the penthouse. Closing her eyes shut, she rested her back against the door and took a moment to calm her rampant thoughts.
"Do you need some help taking that pressure off?" a low, silky voice with an agreeable huskiness to it came from across the room, causing Aera's shocked eyes to snap in the same direction.
"How did you get in here?" she breathed out, orbs fixated on Yoongi's form sitting on the couch. Slightly slumped forward, his elbows were resting on his knees as he was fidgeting with something in his hands. In his black sateen shirt and all-black tailor-made suit, he looked exactly like a medieval vampire prince, midnight orbs peering at her from under lustrous jet black bangs.
"I can get anywhere I want, remember?" he said, his lips curling in a small smirk.
Aera would always fail trying to decode his thoughts. Ordinarily, when you're in a relationship with someone and know them well, you can predict what they're thinking almost all the time. However, this had never been the case with Yoongi. Even after knowing him for so many years, she would never be able to guess what kind of thoughts were going through his head. His mind was an enigma, an unsolvable mystery that would always make her doubtful of his intentions.
"Yoongi, I'm tired," she groaned, running her fingers through her brunette locks. "I don't have the energy for this."
"What makes you assume I'm going to ask something of you that requires energy?" he gazed at her, slightly amused.
"What would you even want to ask of me?" she mumbled, narrowing her eyes at him.
"We can ask each other questions and not answer them till dawn, Aera, but I can think of a better way to pass the time together," his seductive lips stretched in a devilish grin that caused Aera to shudder. It had been years since Yoongi had lost his effect on her, why was her body reacting this way now?
"I'm not in the mood for blunt flirting," she scowled, her whole body tensing up against the quivering of her muscles.
Yoongi's dark orbs were gleaming under the dimmed lights in the room as he eyed her silently the same way he had been eyeing her throughout the day.
Goosebumps lined her skin the moment she realized he had witnessed her meltdown in the hotel lobby today. Still, she didn't feel uncomfortable.
Yoongi had seen her in all kinds of low emotional states, considering how throughout their relationship he had driven her to the verge of a nervous breakdown at least a thousand time. With him, it had always been intense and explosive, like progressively getting closer and closer to the edge of a wood chopping machine. Surely, seeing her like this was nothing new to him.
He stood up from the couch and walked up to her. "What your brother did today was inexcusable. He really took it too far," he muttered, his voice was somewhat softer now as his eyes glinted.
Aera exhaled heavily, horrified that he could hear how her heart picked up its pace in her chest. "It's very difficult for me to believe you're honest when you were right there next to him, the two of you probably laughing at my misery," her gaze gravitated towards the floor in an attempt to hide from him the throbbing of her eyes. Why did she feel so vulnerable?
"I had no idea his mother was coming," Yoongi's hand traveled to Aera's jaw, cradling her face. "Had I known, I would have stopped him from doing this. I'm so sorry you had to see her and go through that all over again. I can't begin to imagine how you must have felt."
Aera's brain felt like it was being bombarded with thoughts as Yoongi stood there, peering into her eyes without refusing to look away. His breath sent a warm breeze to the bare skin of her neck. She could have sworn he looked almost concerned, the way his eyebrows dipped slowly and his tongue cloaked his bottom lip. He had been thinking about her feelings?
"I appreciate the concern," she simply said, the words were the only thing her confused mind could produce at that moment.
"Do you?" he asked hesitantly. "You look at me like we're so distant when we know each other in such an intimate way. We used to fall asleep and wake up next to each other, Aera, you could be a little bit warmer towards me," he dug his teeth into his lower lip as his gaze dropped to her neck, lingering there for a while before trailing back up to her eyes.
"Don't tell me my demeanor somehow bothers you. Because it never did back when we were together. You're three years late with the caring, Yoongi," she grumbled breathlessly. Hiding behind this mean exterior was her only defensive mechanism against his compelling presence.
After so many years, she still hadn't become immune to the drug called Min Yoongi.
"You've always had quite the temper. But as I'm sure you remember, I'm the only one that can tame your demons, Aera." his dark orbs stared deep into hers. Instantaneously, his hand ran up to the back of her head, gently stroking her hair. It was such a sensual gesture, as opposed to the firmness of his voice.
"Tell me something, Yoongi," Aera whispered, pulling away from his hands and taking a couple of steps back. "Why did you come to me the other night, after my uncle's funeral?"
A chaotic cluster of emotions flashed through Yoongi's face and before she could identify them, they were all gone. He gave her a serious look.
"You know why," he simply uttered.
"Was it only for sex?"
"You certainly thought it was, so why are you asking this now?" he groaned, pushing the inside of his cheek with his tongue.
"It doesn't matter what I thought. I want to hear it from you," Aera insisted, her breath caught in her throat.
Yoongi's arms fell loosely to his sides as he went back to his poker face.
The gasp that escaped Aera's lips was barely audible as he took a step towards her. She stepped back until her back was pressed to the wall, her breathing ragged and uneven.
Gently, Yoongi took her chin in between his thumb and forefinger, raising her face so that she was looking at him. His orbs traveled to her neck again as he started playing with a strand of her hair.
"It wasn't just the sex," he admitted under his breath, sending her mind into a frenzy. "Which is why I have to do this."
"Do what?" she inhaled sharply, slightly panicking.
His finger pressed on her cheek, sending electrifying impulses all across the skin on her body before trailing down to her lower lip. He caressed it slowly with his tip of his finger, causing her to shudder.
Hypnotized, Aera saw him gulp like he was faltering. Then, he inched closer, so close that they were sharing breaths before brushing against her lips slightly, barely touching them.
It wasn't a kiss, at least not exactly. His lips just slightly grazed hers. Just as her eyelids grew heavier, Yoongi withdrew but not so much so that she could still feel the warmness his body emitted. His hands had always been cold, but his body was warm. He kept looking at her intently, his expression practically unreadable.
"I'm sorry for what I'm about to do. But it's for the better this way," he whispered, a tinge of sadness in his voice.
Before she could say anything, Aera found herself becoming immersed in his eyes. His pupils dilated, slightly twitching. A heavy fog invaded her mind as the only thing she could focus on were his pitch black orbs and the enticing allure they exuded, causing her to bend to his will unconditionally.
"There was no one in the penthouse when you got here," Yoongi murmured almost inaudibly. "You got ready for bed and quickly fell asleep, without taking any sleeping pills. You had a nice sleep for the first time in years. I was never here," his voice was a hoarse whisper as he slowly let go of her, silently walking to the door and stepping out.
Upon hearing the door close with a metallic click, Aera winced and blinked several times. It felt as though she was harshly awakening from a trance. Her heart was beating violently in her chest and there was a buzzing in her brain that overwhelmed her.
A subtle awareness that she was forgetting something important crawled up in the back of her mind. She rubbed her eyes and yawned, suddenly craving nothing else but sleep.
Surely, it wasn't that important.
