The Avengers

She was met there near two doors by a tall man with dark skin and an eye patch; Nick Fury. She hid in the corner of the elevator behind Phil Coulson, cowering before this man who radiated power and authority. "He's not going to hurt you."

Nick gave Phil a questioning look. "Miss Barnes, I've taken time out of my day to personally escort you to your new living quarters." he told her but he left her at the door with Phil.

"It's not a huge or anything, but it's big enough for you to live comfortably." Phil said, sticking his key into the door with 305 in silver over the frame. He flipped a light switch on as he entered behind Beck. "Some people who work here live in the apartments around you, I know them personally so, if you ever need anything..." Phil trailed off. "Your bedroom is right in there, there's a bathroom, dining room around that corner." he directed her. It was the nicest place she'd ever seen. There was a huge sofa in the living room right in front of a huge flat TV. "The basics are in the refrigerator but you can make a list of some things you want and I'll get it for you. I'll have to bring you some clothes but other than that, you should be set."

Phil Coulson came to see her numerous times a day. He was the only person she saw each day but that was alright with her, he brought her movies and talked with her. He stayed the night in her apartment one night when she had a particularly rough day. He slept on the sofa in her living room and she left her door open so she could see him. He made her smile, he didn't make her forget what happened to her or forget about her brother, nothing could ever do that. But he made it a little easier to understand. She'd come so far with him in those two weeks they spent day in and day out with one another.

She still couldn't be near other people, especially people much larger than her. She was just like a caged and frightened animal. She'd shiver and look just as miserable as the day she was rescued. So Phil brought her meals to her and ate with her, he made sure she showered and was comfortable.

But Fury thought two weeks was plenty to get settled and he was eager to get down to business so with Phil, he visited Beck. "Rebecca, I'm here to speak with you about The Avengers initiative." Nick announced, standing across the coffee table from herself and Phil. "We've gone over what files we could find from your initial location in Russia. The amount of torture inflicted on you there is what no normal human can endure. We've come to the conclusion that you are immortal." He folded his hands together in front of him. Rebecca looked up at Phil. Nick's voice wasn't anywhere near as soft as Phil's, there was hostility and annoyance in his tone and that made Rebecca even more frightened of him.

"The Avengers are a team of exceptional people we call together in a time of crisis. They all live in this tower. If you agree to join, you'll meet them very soon and begin training with them."

"Do you know English?" Nick asked impatiently.

"She can understand what we're saying, sir. I think her trauma has caused her to go mute."

    "Mute?"

"She hasn't spoken since she got here, sir."

Nick looked dumbfounded. "You mean you been spending all this time with her and neither of you have said a word?"

    "I have."

"What'd you do, tell her about your obsession with Cap?"

    "No..." Phil sounded ashamed.

Nick sighed. "Well, Barton knows sign language. I guess he can teach her."

"Actually, sir, we've already been learning."

"We." He scoffed. "The team still has to learn. Get on that immediately." Fury sighed, getting ready to leave them.

    "Yes, sir."
