Goodbyes
Bucky met with a girl at the carnival. A guy by the name of Stark was standing on a stage but Steve and Beck paid no attention to him. Beck fed Steve popcorn and they walked around until Beck got tired and asked to sit down and Steve went for more popcorn.
He'd been gone over thirty minutes, Becky checked her watch, and she was beginning to worry. Steve never ever stayed away from her for longer than he had to and was quick about everything, knowing he'd worry her if he wasn't. But still, he'd been gone far too long. Becky wondering if someone had pulled him into an alley, big guys liked to do that to him, and Steve wouldn't back down from any fight.
Beck got up and walked around to look for Steve and bumped right into Bucky. "Hey, have you seen Steve?" she asked quietly."
"He's..." Bucky rolled his eyes. "He's enrolling again, little'n. I'm going out, Beck, okay? I'll be heading out first thing tomorrow." he told her and she immediately was fighting to hold back tears. "Don't do that, kid, okay?" Buck held his sister's shoulders. "C'mere." he pulled her close and hugged her for a long time. "I'll come back." he said.
"I love you, Buck." she sniffled.
"Hey, Sarge, are we going dancing, or what?!" the girl Bucky met with called from a couple yards away. Bucky straightened up and plastered on a smile.
"Love you too, little'n." he kissed her forehead and looked at her a little longer, trying to remember her well. "You bet!" he called back to the girl and turned around, disappearing into the crowd, being left alone in the swarm of people.
...
"You're what?" she whimpered.
"It's some program they've got, Doctor Erskine he runs it. They didn't tell me much but he offered me a chance, Beck, I gotta take it."
"I know. I'm... I'm happy for you." she croaked.
"Baby, don't cry... please, don't... don't do that." Steve begged. "Beck," she fell over onto Steve and he wrapped his arm around her. She wanted to be happy for him, that was the better thing to do. Joining the army, after all, was what Steve had always wanted. But she couldn't find it in herself to feel any joy for him because when he shipped off, there was a good chance she'd never see him again. "C'mon, baby, stop. Please." he couldn't stand to see her cry.
"I just don't want anything to happen to you." she cried hoarsely, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Hey, nothing's gonna happen to me, Beck." he pushed some brown curls away from her eyes and looked down into them. "Nothing is going to stop me from coming home to you." he told her before he kissed her lips softly. "No bullets," he kissed her again from a different angle. "No bombs," again, he pressed his lips to hers. "Nothing is going to keep me from coming home to you, Beck."
"I love you."
"I love you too." He smiled against her lips and she leaned forward. "Beck,"
"I don't want you to leave."
"I don't want to leave you. Don't ever think that. I love you with everything I've got, Beck, but I've got to do this."
"I know." She fell back onto the bed. "I know you do." he fell beside her.
"You'll wait for me?"
"Of course I'll wait for you Steve." she held his face in her hands. "You'll come back to me?"
"I'll always come back to you." He meant it. The only thing that would stop him from coming home to his Rebecca was death. She pulled him toward her to kiss him. She never wanted to move from that spot. She had sixteen hours left with him and was determined to make the most of them. Her lips left his only to find a new place to kiss him. She peppered kissed on his neck and jaw and cheeks, smiling when he moved to hover over her. She undid his belt buckled and the top two buttons on his shirt but that was as much as her shaky fingers would allow her to do.
"Beck," Steve pulled away from her lips but she just pressed hers onto his again. "Not... Not that I don't want to do this but... are you sure you want to?" he asked. She bit down on the inside of her cheek and nodded slowly.
Beck woke up with her head on Steve's chest, like she did always did. She looked up at him and shivered at the fact that neither of them were clothed but then she smiled. She moved her finger around on his pale skin, drawing shaped and words, and tried not to think about what would happen in a just few hours.
"Do I ever tell you how beautiful you look in the morning?"
"Every morning." she smiled, stopping the circle she was drawing on his shoulder to look up at him. He held her close with the arm he had around her all night and kissed her forehead.
"Is there anything you want to do before I leave?"
"We just did it." she laughed. "I just want to stay here a while. Is that okay?"
"Perfect." he kissed her again. "I love you Beck."
"I love you too."
Steve sighed. It was too perfect, she was too perfect. "Do you want breakfast?" he asked quietly in case she'd fallen back to sleep. She hummed, kissing his chest in response. "Mhm, what do you want?"
"Pancakes."
"Yea?"
"And eggs."
"Scrambled?" he didn't really have to ask, he knew exactly what she wanted for breakfast. Steve stepped into his shorts and shuffled into the kitchen to start cooking. Any other day, Rebecca would've been in heaven. She loved sleepy mornings with Steve when neither of them had to work and they had breakfast together on the couch and took their dog Ducky for walks and shared random sweet kisses. But not that day. Steve would have to leave in four hours. Beck rolled out of bed and slipped into her robe. She went into the kitchen and stood in front of Steve, taking the spatula from him to stir the eggs around in the pan. Steve hooked his finger on the collar of her robe and pulled it back a little to kiss her shoulders.
"Quit." she giggled.
"Why?"
"Because if you keep that up, I'll burn your breakfast and I don't want that to be what you remember me by." she tried to laugh.
"Trust me," he chuckled. "It won't be." He pressed one more kiss to her skin before starting the pancakes.
