Chapter 80
By the time that they were finally done rehearsing, there was only an hour to places. That gave the actors half an hour to go grab dinner and be back at the theater.
Nobody had the energy to do the show again, but they all had to. A few of the ensemble girls were seriously considering having their swings go on for them, but they knew that Daveed would yell at them if they did.
The Schuyler sisters decide to run to a McDonald's down the street, and as soon as they step outside, they become concerned. At least ten inches of snow have accumulated on the sidewalk, and with a quick glance at her phone, Pippa quickly realizes that there is supposed to be another four feet dropping in the next few hours. None of the girls had ever seen a forecast of snow falling that fast.
"What if we get snowed in?" Jazzy asks, with a scared tone of voice.
"Oh my gosh, what if we do?" Pippa asks, alarmed.
"Okay, stay calm, Pippa," Lana says, with a quick hug to her friend. "If we act quickly, then we can make it to the hotel to grab a few spare outfits, and then to that convenience store next door to grab some essentials... food and toiletries just to keep us in case we do get trapped."
"Lana, you're a genius!" Jazzy exclaims. "We have to hurry, though. Let's go."
Back at the hotel, Jazzy dumps out her suitcase, leaving the contents sprawled all over the floor.
"Everyone throw two spare sets of clothes in here. It's big enough that we should have plenty of room."
All three girls do so, and also throw in their cosmetic bags with their toothbrushes and such in them, and then they run out of the hotel.
Next door, they get some cans of soup and vegetables, loaves of bread, and cases of water. They also grab frozen dinners for that night, to make in the microwave at intermission. The girls have to buy so much that even after they fill up the remaining room in Jazzy's suitcase, Lana is stuck carrying five plastic bags, Jazzy has two, and Pippa is struggling to balance two cases of water bottles in her arms.
"Is it bad that I sort of hope we get snowed in, just so that we didn't do all of this for nothing?" Lana asks.
"YES!" Jazzy and Pippa exclaim, giggling a bit.
"Think of how awful it would be to be stuck in that theatre with crazy Daveed, sad, fluffy Carleigh, and goodness knows what else," Jazzy vividly describes the scene to Lana. "And James."
"Oh, that's true," Lana replies, with a shudder.
They head into the theater, and Pippa practically runs Daveed over because the cases of water are blocking her line of sight.
"What the heck?" he exclaims.
"We were worried about getting snowed in," Jazzy quickly explains. "We have enough food and water for the whole cast to eat for two days, but after that we could be in trouble."
"I don't think that we are going to get snowed in," Daveed rolls his eyes, "but I appreciate the thought just in case."
"No problem," Jazzy says, stoically, and then, they all go back to their dressing room.
By the time that they go out onstage, it is apparent that they may get snowed in. According to the theater, more than half of the parties called to cancel their tickets and receive refunds, and by the time that the cast members' eyes get adjusted to the bright stage lights, they notice that there are maybe twenty members filling the huge theater. After the opening number, the show is paused.
"You can all move up to better seats," a voice says over the loudspeaker. We will wait five minutes to resume the show."
"I can't believe this is actually happening," Jazzy whispers to Pippa, laughing.
"It's a good thing that we bought all of that food," Pippa rolls her eyes. "It seems like that seemingly rehearsal from this afternoon really isn't going to be over anytime soon."
"Don't remind me," Jazzy groans.
Five minutes go by, and they pick back up with "Aaron Burr, Sir." Here goes nothing.
After the show is finished, there is about four feet of snow on the ground.
"It looks like we are stuck here," Daveed announces, during bows. At this point, there are only five audience members left, because the others snuck out at intermission. A young couple, and three teenage girls are left in the theater. "Are any cast members willing to give up their dressing rooms for the audience members, especially those of you who have single dressing rooms?"
Pippa, Jazzy, and Lana exchange glances.
"We will," they say in unison. "We can sleep on the stage."
"Thank you, girls," Daveed says. "Do we just have two parties here?"
The audience members nod.
"Alright, we just need one more dressing room, then. Who will it be?"
Brett raises his hand. "I'll do it."
"Thank you, Brett. Girls, will you show our group of three to your room, and Brett, show our party of two to your room. You can all sleep out on the stage."
