Chapter 15
Jazzy woke up the next morning when the sunlight streamed through the windows. Pippa was awake and looking at her phone. Jazzy checked her own phone and saw that she had several messages from Kaitlyn, Anthony, and Lin. Kaitlyn was asking about meeting Jazzy for breakfast. That text had been at seven thirty. It was nine. Whoops. Jazzy quickly texted her back and apologized.
Anthony was asking if she wanted to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Jazzy wasn't sure yet- she had liked the first movie, but they might not have time to see it.
She checked Lin's message.
Lin: Attention all cast members. Today is a two-show day. I want you all to get to the theatre early so we can run 'Schuyler Sisters', 'Satisfied', 'Take a Break', 'Say No to This', 'Non-Stop', 'Helpless', 'It's Quiet Uptown', 'Schuyler Defeated', 'Burn', 'Alexander Hamilton', 'Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story', 'That Would Be Enough', 'A Winter's Ball', 'The Reynolds Pamphlet', 'Best of Wives and Best of Women', and 'Wait For It'.
Jazzy shook her head. Lin. What was he doing? He knew Pippa was sick, and yet almost all of the songs he listed for rehearsal were songs that she was in. Jazzy knew it was mainly because of Lana's mistakes, but it was still unbelievable that he was making Pippa do so much work on a two show day.
"Pippa, did you get Lin's text?" Jazzy asked.
"Yes," Pippa said.
"How are you feeling?"
"I don't know, honestly. My head hurts, but not as badly as it did last night, and I'm tired of being sick," Pippa replied.
"Well, Lin wants us at the theatre in a half-hour," Jazzy said. "If you want Carleigh to understudy tonight, I'm sure Lin would understand."
"I don't know. I'm going to do the first show and see how I feel," Pippa said.
They both changed. Pippa wore her Angelica sweatshirt and her black beanie. Jazzy wore her favorite flannel, leggings, and boots.
They headed to the theatre and went in through the stage door. They ran into Anthony and Oak on their way to the stage.
"How are you feeling?" Oak asked Pippa.
She shrugged.
Onstage, all the cast members were sitting around Lin. He had a binder full of notes and was studying it carefully. Pippa and Jazzy went over to sit next to Kaitlyn, who was stretching.
"Okay, now that everyone is here, I'd like to make some announcements," Lin said. "Last night's show was not the best from all of you. I know that for a fact. I am shocked that the show went as badly as it did. I know each of you has more to contribute than what you put into last night."
"To be frank, it was chaotic after 'Schuyler Sisters' because people had to adjust," Jazzy called out.
"That is no excuse. 'Schuyler Sisters' should never have needed the improvisation that was done. It should have gone smoothly. That is why, today, before our first show, we'll be running through every single Schuyler Sisters song in the show," Lin replied unsympathetically. "We'll start with Jazzy, Pippa, and Lana as the Schuyler Sisters. If one of you screws up, we'll start substituting."
Kaitlyn, Jazzy, and Pippa exchanged glances.
"What about everyone else?" Anthony asked. He looked concerned for the Schuyler Sisters.
"The same goes for every other cast member. I want these two shows to be perfect. There are no excuses. From 'Alexander Hamilton', now," Lin snapped.
Everyone got up and hurried to their places. Jazzy saw Pippa massaging her temples.
"Are you okay?"
"Lin is stressing me out," she admitted.
"It's not our fault. It was just Lana, and everyone else did the best they could. He's taking it out on everyone unnecessarily," Jazzy said. She hugged Pippa.
Lana walked up to them. "We'd better get this right," she said.
Jazzy just rolled her eyes. "Don't worry, we will," she said.
They ran through 'Alexander Hamilton' and managed not to mess up. At least they didn't let Lin see their mistakes. There was a lot of running around in that song backstage. One little mishap could cause everyone to screw up. Luckily, no one did.
"Alright, now, 'Satisfied'," Lin announced.
They all got to their places. It started off fine- Lana was singing well, and it sounded good. It started to get messy during the 'Rewind' section of the song.
Lana managed to nearly run into Jessamine, go the wrong way, and forget one of her lines. All in one song.
"Kaitlyn, you're up. Don't mess up," Lin growled.
"You can do it, Kaitlyn," Brett reassured her. Kaitlyn gave him a small smile and stepped to the center of the stage.
"Starting from the top," Lin shouted.
Kaitlyn did well. She had everything down, and even managed to put a different spin on Angelica. She somehow made Angelica even sadder and more lonely than Lana had ever done in rehearsal. It was definitely different than Renee's Angelica, but Jazzy loved Kaitlyn's version just as much.
The rehearsals lasted forever. By the they got through all the songs Lin wanted to do, Pippa had had to sing 'Helpless' five times because of Lana, and they'd done 'Schuyler Sisters' countless times, with Lana for most of them. Kaitlyn had substituted whenever Lin lost patience, and then Araella had also stepped in when Kaitlyn needed to focus on her own blocking.
They finally were done. They'd run every song at least three times. It was exhausting, and they still had two shows to do.
Jazzy was a little irritated with Lin. And Pippa felt even worse than she had when she woke up. Her head was pounding and she felt lightheaded.
Great.
