Chapter 146

Lana sits in Olivia's room with her younger sister, catching up on how life has been for them.

"How's Dad been?" Lana asks.

"Same as always... never getting better, never getting worse."

Lana sighs. It's killing her to know that he dad is like this, but nobody knows how to get him help without him going ballistic.

They sit in silence for a moment, then: "Hey Lana?"

"Yeah?"

"Could we talk about what you told me the other day... um, about you being bi... for a second?" Olivia asks timidly.

Lana nods ever so slightly.

"When are you going to tell them?"

"Soon. That's why I came out here on my break, if I'm being honest. I don't know... maybe tonight?"

"Okay..."

"Thank you so much for keeping it a secret, Liv. It really means alot to me."

"It has been hard to keep," she admits.

"I know. It was unfair of me to ask you to keep it for even as long as I did. I understand that now. Just a little bit longer, alright?"

She gives me a small smile. "Alright."

We sit for a moment lost in thought.

"How long have you known? I mean... how did you find out?" Olivia asks.

Lana takes a deep breath. "There's this girl that I'm on tour with... I just sort of found myself crushing on her... and I don't know... I thought that there was hope that we could be together, but I don't really know anymore. She's been acting really weird toward me lately. Let's just say that right now, we have a... complicated relationship."

"Oh..."

"Don't get me wrong, we are friends... but it's a little big rough... I don't really know..."

"No, I get what you mean," Olivia tells Lana.

"So, yeah, that's the story..."

"Lana, I don't think you need to worry too much," Olivia says, sensing the nerves in her sister's voice. "I think that Mom will be okay with it."

"God, I hope so," Lana replies.

Soon, the girls are called for dinner. "Today?" Olivia whispers to Lana in the hall, as they're walking to the table.

Lana takes a deep breath and nods. "As good a time as any."

"You can do it. I'm proud of you."

The three girls sit around the table eating their pasta. Lana's dad is locked up in his room, probably with a beer bottle in hand, and another one ready for when the other one is finished.

"Mom?" Lana speaks up, after a few moments.

"Yeah?"

"Can I talk to you about something?"

"Of course Lana," her mom says. "What's up?"

Olivia gives Lana a little kick under the table, as an unspoken message of encouragement as Lana builds up the courage to allow the next words to come out of her mouth.

"I'm bi..."

Lana's mom puts her fork down, and looks Lana in the eye. "Oh, wow. Okay. Um, congratulations Lana..." she smiles. "I mean... um, not congratulations about being bi, but like... congratulations about having the courage to tell me... I know that was probably hard for you."

Lana laughs, as her mom clearly doesn't know what to say to this news, but seems supportive.

"I'm glad that you're not afraid to be yourself," Lana's mom says.

"Thanks Mom," Lana smiles. "I love you."

"I love you too," she replies.

"I told you it wouldn't be bad," Olivia whispers in Lana's ear. Lana smiles.

"You were right. That was not as horrible as I thought it would be... scary, but not horrible."

"So, Lana, do you have a girlfriend?"

Lana takes a deep breath. "Uh, not exactly," she laughs, as Olivia laughs along with her.

"She got rejected," Olivia teases.

"Shut up," Lana murmurs, playfully slapping her sister. "I didn't get... rejected, so to speak... we just... I think she wants to stay friends right now. She thinks I'm still not completely accepting of myself, or something like that... I'm not totally sure. I think she just thinks it's too soon after me being 'out' for me to get in a relationship..."

"Okay, that's fair," Lana's mom laughs. "Keep us posted."

"Will do," Lana laughs. "So Liv, how about you tell Mom about that guy you've been Snapchatting..."

"I hate you," Olivia laughs, glaring at her sister.

"Consider that revenge for telling me I got rejected."

"Olivia, I'd really like to hear this story," their mom says, as Olivia blushes a deep shade of pink.

"Yeah, so this guy from my school added me on Snapchat and we've been talking a little bit, and he might have asked me to his school's end-of-year dance..."

"Ahh! My little girls are all grown up!"

Olivia and Lana burst into giggles, and Lana knows that she will remember this day for the rest of her life. More importantly, she will remember it as a good day. The day that she finally felt free to be who she really was.
