Chapter 14

"Alright, cast meeting, in the green room, in five minutes," the girls hear someone calling outside of their dressing room. Pippa groans.
"Here, have some Advil," Jazzy says, tossing a travel-sized bottle that she keeps in her purse at Pippa.
"You are a lifesaver, Jaz," Pippa says, grabbing her water bottle and popping two pills.
"Let's get going to the meeting now. I have a feeling I know what's up, and it's not going to be pretty," Jazzy says.
"You and me both Jas, you and me both," Kaitlyn says as the three girls drag themselves off of the couch and into the green room, a few doors down the hall.
Most of the cast is already there. The three girls take their seats on a couch right by the door, and then Lin and Alex start the meeting.
"Alright, I'm sure a lot of you know what we are here to talk about. In case you don't, we had some mishaps tonight during 'The Schuyler Sisters,'" Lin begins.
Jazzy can't help but roll her eyes, remembering the terrifying moment onstage.
"We just wanted to tell you all that we are proud of you for how you covered tonight. I know that it was far from an ideal situation, especially for an opening night, but you did all that you could. That's all that I could ever ask of you," Lin continues. He looks Pippa, Jazzy, and Kaitlyn right in the eyes as he says this.
"We are going to take proper actions to make sure that this won't ever happen again, and if it does, Lin and I have discussed casting changes that may need to happen. Kaitlyn, be ready to step in at any given time for Angelica," Alex says.
A brief look of panic crosses Kaitlyn's face, but she tries not to let the news phase her.
"Yay Kait!" Jazzy whispers, trying to encourage her friend. Pippa musters up a smile at Kaitlyn, too.
"Everyone go back to the hotel and get a good night's sleep. The show will go better tomorrow," Lin tells the company. "There are some fans waiting at the stage door, but you should be able to get through them quickly."
The meeting is dismissed, and the three girls head back to the dressing room to grab their purses and personal belongings that are in there that they don't trust to leave at the theater. Just as they're about to head outside, they hear a knock on the door.
"Oh gosh," Pippa says, flopping down on the couch. "What now?"
Jazzy opens up the door and is surprised to see Brett standing there.
"Is everyone decent in here?" he asks, covering his eyes.
Jazzy rolls her eyes.
"You can come in, Brett."
They head into the dressing room, and Jazzy closes the door behind him.
"I just wanted to offer my congratulations to the ladies of the show. Especially Kaitlyn, my wonderful dance partner. You all had to put up with some absolute crap tonight, and I feel awful about it."
Kaitlyn can't help but blush.
"Thanks, Brett," she says, staring at her feet.
"Honestly, I hope that you end up performing as Angelica. You know it better than Lana anyway."
"Thanks," Kaitlyn tells him.
"Alright, well, I'll leave you girls alone to your girl stuff. See you all tomorrow," Brett says, and then walks out of the dressing room.
"Well that wasn't awkward at all," Jazzy says, after he leaves.
"Shut up," Kaitlyn mutters, with a hint of laughter in her voice.
"Can we please just go back to the hotel?" Pippa groans.
"Yeah, you need some rest," Jazzy says. The three girls walk out of the theater, and have to deal with the twenty or so fans that have stuck around by the stage door.
Pippa badly wants to just push through them and go sleep, but her instincts get the better of her. She signs playbills and takes pictures with the fans, and then is finally able to go back to her room.
"What a birthday," she mumbles under her breath.
"I feel so bad for you Pip," Jazzy says sympathetically.
Suddenly, Jazzy gets an idea.
"Let's do a 'birthday makeup' on Monday. We can have presents and get Voodoo donuts or something. Just you, me, and Kaitlyn," she suggests.
"That sounds wonderful," Pippa says. "This is why you're my best friend."
"Love you too, Pip," Jazzy says. The girls share a hug. "Do you want me to make you some tea or anything before you go to sleep?"
"Do we have any of that berry stuff left?" Pippa asks.
"I think so. I'll check. Get your jammies on."
Pippa laughs- she hasn't heard that term since she was a teenager. She grabs her fuzzy pants with Sven from Frozen on them and a Juilliard tee shirt, and throws them on, then climbs under the covers of her bed. She piles her fluffy music blanket on top.
After laying there for a few minutes, Jazzy brings over a styrofoam cup with a pink liquid in it.
"Drink up," she says.
"You're amazing," Pippa tells her friend, cracking a small smile.
After drinking the tea, Pippa is tired and ready for bed.
"I'm going to sleep, Jazzy. You can stay up and watch TV if you want; I don't care."
She turns off the lamp next to her and slides down into her bed.
"Goodnight Pip," Jazzy says. It's the last thing that Pippa remembers before she is swept into a dream world where, due to her sickness, isn't a very pleasant one. That night, she has to relive the drama from the show, despite how badly she wants to forget about it.
By the time that Jazzy heads to bed, Pippa is tossing and turning. Jazzy can't tell what she's dreaming about, but considers waking her up to put her out of it. She knows how important that sleeping is to Pippa's health, though, and leaves her be.
