Two: Launa
I loved her since the beginning. I just knew it. Being bisexual and all. Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up. I'm bisexual and I'm teased about it all the time back in Seattle. I was kinda glad I was moving down to Florida. Kinda like starting off on a blank slate, ya know? I had a feeling in my chest when she stood up and told off the teacher in home room.
The sun was flooding through the windows of the cafeteria. "Bet you don't get much sun up in Seattle," Jacklyn said, elbowing me a little with a joking smile. I smiled back, still a little shaken up by the confrontation between Skyler and Mr. McNeil. I was so afraid that he would hit her or something. My spine shivered when I remembered the fight between Kayla Green and our teacher, Mrs. Diaz.
That girl go hammered! I never, ever wanna see that again. And especially on my first day of school. Jacklyn lead me through the rows of tables where I got glances and glares and stares from fellow students. I swallowed my nervousness and felt my cheeks get red and hot with my nervous demeanor. My hands shook until my knuckles turned white. Then I saw that table where that one girl, Skyler, sits. "C'mon," Jacklyn said, pulling me along with her toward the table.
We found two empty seats across the table from Skyler. "Hey, guys," she greeted coolly. Her long brown hair hung over her shoulders and she wore a gray, knitted beanie that rested on the top of her head. It complimented her black nerd glasses perfectly, along with her light, light gray sweater that said, "No, you can't sit with us."
The irony..., I thought to myself. I smiled and waved at her. She seemed friendly. But she could be like those girls who hate sharing their social group with new comers.
"Hi. You're new around her, right?" I was stunned. She wasn't like those girls at all! I nodded and let my smile drop just a little.
"You gonna hang with us?" A boy to Skyler's left asked. His hair was a sandy brown with blond streaks at the tips of it.
His eyes were so dark brown that they almost looked black. But his skin was tan and his teeth were white and shaped in a smile. Skyler elbowed him in the ribs, causing him to yelp.
"Sky! What was that for?" He asked, still smiling.
"You know what it was for, Leo," she said, smiling at him before giving him a wink. Leo's eyes softened before he sat down next to Skyler again.
"Sorry, my friend here is just curious," she apologized. She pushed her glasses farther up on the bridge of her nose, making her look even more dazzling. "We were just wondering if you wanted to be part of our social group, ya know?"
I glanced around. Everyone at this table looked dangerous, dramatic, outspoken, and just all around different. They looked like they didn't care who fit in and who didn't. They didn't care if you were an outcast. They were what you had left to go to if you were thrown out of your social group.
I looked back at Skyler. "Who's the one in charge?" I asked timidly. Skyler smiled at me with her sly smile, her teeth white.
"You're looking at her," she replied, sitting back and lacing her fingers together behind her head. I stared at her, almost in disbelief. "What?" She snapped.
"N-nothing," I stammered, feeling a grin spread across my face. "Sure, I'll hang with you guys." The table cheered, everyone smiling and patting my shoulders. I finally kind of felt like I belonged.
"But first," Skyler said, "we're gonna need to take a shopping trip." Her smile sharpened, as if knowing something I didn't.
