Ch. 18: Rooftops and Inspiration
Wade stood on the roof of the warehouse, admiring the nighttime stars accompanied by the moonlight. It was hard to completely enjoy the view though after everything he just learned. Wade was lost in his thoughts about what was happening and what he and his friends were up against. He wasn't up there by himself for long though as Molly came up to join him.
"Hey" she said when she stepped out, capturing his attention. "Is it alright if I join you?"
"Sure"
He turned back to his sight seeing as Molly walked up next to him.
"Nice night" she said.
"Yea, it's always nice up here" he replied. "I used to hang out here a lot with Mark and Bob. It was always just nice to be up here, even if we didn't do anything"
"Seems like the perfect place to just clear your head" she said.
She side-glanced at Wade to see him take a breath through the nose and let it out. It seems clearing his head wasn't going to be that easy. He was one man going up against major odds, with a team of young men depending on him nonetheless. Molly had to get some inspiration out of him. Not just for him, but for herself as well. She had to ease his mind and make him believe that he could do this, cos he had to do this. They and so many others needed him to do this. And, she needed him to make her believe that she could do this as well.
"Wade, why did you choose to do this?" she asked.
Wade thought for a moment before finding his answer.
"I just... I've always wanted to do good. I've always wanted to help people in the best possible way I could. And whenever I do this, it just felt right"
Molly smiled in admiration before Wade continued.
"What about you? Why did you decide to join the Air Force?"
Molly let out a brief laugh under her breath before answering.
"I'm just a modern-day patriot looking to serve her country. And, I'll admit, I'm also a terrible action junky" she and Wade both giggled a little. "But I've also... wanted to be a difference maker. Do something that really counts, you know?"
"Yea, I get it. I'm the same way" Wade nodded. "I wanna make a difference as much as anybody. And I know that this could be the biggest thing that I'll ever accomplish. But, this is a really big thing. It's much bigger than what I had intended"
"Wait, I thought you were an ancient warrior bread for taking on armies and monsters and shit" she noted.
"Yea, but international conspiracies are a whole new thing for me" he half joked with a dry laugh, but it faded quickly. "I'm not sure if I'm prepared for something like this"
"Wade, nobody is ever prepared for the things they end up having to face. You just have to learn to live up to the challenge and conquer it" she stated encouragingly.
Wade actually gave her a side glance and a smirk in response, liking the way she put that. Molly knew she was getting through to him and tried to keep it going.
"I never imagined I would one day take on people with superpowers and when that time came, I was exactly where you are. I was terrified beyond believe, had no clue of how someone like me was going to fight, let alone defeat, super-powered individuals. I was a mess to be honest" a brief laugh rose from under Wade's breath, almost not believing that. "Most of all, it wasn't just me I had to worry about, it was also my team, just like you have your team to worry about" Wade's expression returned back into that concerned look he had. But now, he and Molly were facing more directly at each other.
"But I got it done, and me and my team were fine. It was scary and hard as hell, but we did it" she continued. "And you can do this, Wade. This is exactly what you were trained for, whether you know it or not. You also have a team with you, depending on you and willing to fight with you; but they're young and they can't do this without you. They need you to bring them out of this mess, along with any loved ones they have. And not to put pressure on you or anything, but there's a lot of people trapped in that facility waiting for you. And maybe, more people like the boys, just hiding wherever they can on a day-to-day basis, hoping they can just live normal lives. This is what you're about Wade, and I know you can do this" Wade took in every last word she spoke, feeling the most up for this than he had since it began.
"Also, I'll be with you" Molly added and that one shocked Wade. She was actually going to help them fight? Risk her life for theirs? That was crazy.
"I... appreciate that, but this isn't your fight. You've already done more than I can ask" he noted.
"You're wrong, this is my fight. Some of those people are in there because I put them there. I need to make that right. I need to do this just as much as you do" She had a point. Although Wade didn't want anything bad to happen to her, he knew there was no way he could talk her out of this.
"Besides, even if I didn't, or even if this wasn't my fight, I still couldn't let you do this without me" she admitted and Wade was really surprised. He could not believe she just said that.
"I'm with you... all the way" she added and that was probably the sweetest thing anyone had ever said to Wade.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"Positive" she nodded.
She then leaned up and pecked him on the cheek, which really caught him off guard.
"Now go be a leader" she ordered, and all he could do was just smile.
He was silent for a moment before saying, "Thankyou" and heading back. Molly let herself smile and blush once he moved past, and followed him back downstairs.
The others were waiting as the two returned. They stood upon their arrival, all with looks of worry, waiting, and hoping for good news. Wade and Molly stopped for a moment as they spotted their group, then continued until they were all back together.
"Ok guys, we know where they are, and I'm sure Molly has a plan to take them down" Wade began. "But I'm not gonna lie. This is the real deal here. We do this, they won't worry about capturing us, they'll just kill us on sight. And yes, there's a good chance that we could all die. But if we do this, we could make such a difference in this world. We could do so much for people who are like us. Not just the ones who are captured, but the ones who are hiding, or the ones they haven't even discovered yet. Them, along with all their loved ones. I'm talking not only setting free all those captured, but getting justice for all the ones who were murdered, and ensuring something like this never happens again. This could be the most important thing we've ever done in our lives guys"
The three let his words sink in for a moment. They thought about everything he just said and everything that was on the line. They knew the exact importance of this fight and it made them feel that much more determined about it. But there was still the matter of what a risky situation this was. They had never done anything this dangerous before, let alone risk this much. It was truly an all or nothing battle.
"But look, I know how serious this is too, and I'm not gonna force any of you to do this. So, if you don't wanna do this, then please don't. There's nothing wrong with that. But if you do, I'll be there with you guys every step of the way. I won't ask you to risk or do anything I wouldn't myself. And I swear to you guys, I'll do everything in my power to get you all out alive"
Molly felt so proud of Wade for how he was handling this. He seemed like the leader that most could only wish to have. Wade was a real caring man.
As for the others, they felt so moved by Wade and his words. Not to mention, his courage and caring tone. He truly cared for them, and would do anything to keep them safe. That was the absolute truth. They all glanced at each other for a moment before Patrick spoke up.
"Well Wade, none of us really want to do this, but none of us want to spend our lives running and hiding either; nor do we want that for anyone else. And anytime these guys ever came after us, we stuck it to them pretty damn well. I think taking the fight to them for a change is a hell of a move. So I say let's do it, let em have it"
"Damn right" Gar nodded. "We're with you, Wade. You lead, we'll follow"
"Hell yes" JP nodded too. "Besides, my family's in there, and I've been away from them for way too long now"
"I know, but JP?" Wade said. "It's not just your family here. We're talking hundreds, maybe thousands, if not more" he noted, making sure JP saw the big picture and stayed focus.
"I know" he nodded. "I'm in it for them too, and for you guys" everyone smiled from that notion.
"So, you're all sure about this? Cos if I'm gonna lead you guys in there, all of you will need to trust me" Wade notably stated.
"We do Wade, all the way" Pat nodded promisingly and the others agreed.
Wade glanced around his team of heroes, seeing all ready faces. He felt like a proud father watching his brave kids accomplishing wonders. He even glanced at Molly, who had the exact same look they did.
"So, what's your plan?" he asked her.
"According to what my friend gave me, she and some other friends of ours will respond as soon as the building's alert system sounds off. When that happens, Doctor Blue and the General will try to escape with a briefcase. It contains all the doc's main research and important stuff. We get them with that briefcase and turn them in to my friends, it's all over, we've won. But if they get away with the case, we're back to square one, and most of what we accomplish will be for nothing"
"And I'm sure it's not as easy as it sounds" Pat noted.
"No, we're gonna have to go through a lot to get to them, and then some" Wade promised.
"Well, at least they'll make it exciting" Gar smiled and the others giggled.
"I like it though, let's do it" JP nodded and everyone agreed. "Let's riggity riggity reck em!"
"Again, what the hell is that?" Wade asked and the others laughed.
"It's a metaphor" he shrugged.
"What kind of-you know what, forget it. So, is everyone ready?"
"I think we are" Gar nodded. "Let's fly out and do this!"
"Woah, wait, I can't fly" Wade noted. The room was quiet for a moment as everyone gave Wade these awkward, almost laughing, looks. "Why am I the only one here who can't fly?!"
"Cos nobody likes you" Gar said.
"Wade, can't you just like... use your mind powers to lift yourself up or something?" JP asked.
"Not that I've needed to, but I haven't really had the chance to test that out yet, JP!"
"Oh, forget it" Molly cut in. "That would get us all caught anyway. I have another way of getting us there without any trouble"
"Thank God" Wade rolled his eyes. "We'll need to save our energy anyway, cos we have a big fight waiting for us" he stated and everyone nodded. "Alright, everyone suit up" he ordered, but the three just awkwardly stood there, glancing at each other.
"Uh, we don't have suits" Gar brought up, leading to another awkward silence in the room.
Wade's jaw just hung open as he stared at the three, not believing this.
"You know what, just get ready. We'll deal with that shit later"
After that, the boys got themselves ready while Wade and Molly suited up. Wade's outfit felt incomplete without the staff, but it was only a matter of time now before he retrieved it. The chance they've waited so long for was now upon them. It was now time to fight.
