Tom clenched his jaw as he heard Slughorn compliment Hermione on her potion.
All class Slughorn had been favouring her and talking about her potion when Tom's was just as good, if anything, better.
The boy tapped his finger against surface of the wooden desk as he waited for the old excuse of a professor to look at his potion. He looked over to find he was now at Hermione's shoulder, looking down at her potion.
"Now you see it, don't you?" A voice said from beside him. Tom let out an annoyed exhale as he turned to the Malfoy boy.
"See what, exactly?" He watched the boy grin.
"She's good-looking, and smart. And good at Dark Arts." Abraxas didn't even attempt at hiding his stare at the girl.
"It's almost like she were sent here to beat you." Tom felt his ego get hit. A random girl was not going to have him beat in his school.
"Anyway, she has nice blue eyes. Don't you think?" Tom furrowed his brown in confusion.
"Are you blind? They're brown." The Riddle boy shut his eyes in regret when he realized he fell for Abraxas' childish trap. The blonde began to erupt into laughter which attracted confused stares from their classmates, including Hermione.
"Quit being so juvenile, you cretin." Abraxas shrugged with a smile still on his face.
"Alright, Granger-Lover." Tom clenched his jaw. When Slughorn took the girl to the closet with ingredients, an idea struck him.
He slowly raised his wand, enough so it was directed at Hermione but also hidden from Slughorn.
"Locomotor." A bunch of alihotsy leaves that were on the table next to Hermione's cauldron levitated until he threw them in the pot.
"What are you doing?!" Abraxas whispered from beside him.
"Shutup and keep watch." He said as he stirred the leaves into the pot, hoping his plan would work.
"They're coming!" Abraxas whispered hysterically from beside him. Tom stopped stirring and hid his wand again as he watched the two return to her desk.
He pretended to work but watched from the corner of his eye as Hermione offered Slughorn the potion. Slughorn took a sip after a few seconds, he began to laugh uncontrollably.
The whole class looked over to find a stunned Hermione looking at Slughorn with the potion still in hand. Her mouth was parted in shock and her face was growing red.
"I'm so sorry. I...I don't know what-" She frantically spoke as the professor laughed louder.
"Office." He breathed out through laughs.
Tom felt a smirk on his face as he watched the entire mess. As if she knew, Hermione looked over and glared at him before walking out with a manic Slughorn.
"That was amazing!" Abraxas exclaimed from beside him.
"Guys, Tom did that!" He called over the other Slytherin boys and they too began to applaud him.
Tom knew it was petty, but he was willing to do anything to stay at the top.
Hermione stomped her foot like a child throwing a temper-tantrum when she reached the empty common room. She couldn't believe Tom actually messed with her potion.
She'd been keeping her rage in all day since Potions class in the morning. Dumbledore let her off since it wasn't her fault, but he was aware Tom was messing with her.
"No! Don't call him down...sir." She quickly said when he offered to talk to him about what he did.
"Why?"
"He'll think I'm a snitch. Look, he won't talk to me." Dumbledore nodded hesitantly before sending her out.
Hermione threw herself on the common room couch and bounced her leg up and down angrily. The cheat himself should've been here by now.
She decided to skim through a book to try and calm herself down. She'd gotten a bit in before the common room door swung open and in came Tom and his posse.
The brunette girl didn't look up from her book and decided to ignore him. Or at least that was her initial plan before his idiotic friends provoked her.
"Nice potion, Granger!" A raven-haired boy she didn't know started laughing. She'd been here for 2 days and yet she'd still not figured out everyone's names.
"Didn't know we were making laughing potions." Another voice said from behind her book. She tried to ignore it like she did with Draco Malfoy's stupid comments back in Hogwarts.
"I thought you were smart." She brought the book down and looked up to see who said that. She saw a blonde that eerily resembled Lucius Malfoy snickering.
"Actually, your conniving friend threw the alihotsy in my pot." She glared at Tom, feeling her rage grow all over again. He stood in front of all his little friends with an amused look on his face that Hermione wanted to slap off.
"You can't prove that." Abraxas shot back. Hermione scoffed.
"Do you always have people talk for you?" She spoke towards Tom.
"Uh oh. She's getting angry." A muffled voice said and all of them laughed.
"No one's scared of you. You think you're so much better than everyone when you're not."
The common room fell with silence. The tension between Tom and Hermione could've been sliced through with a knife.
"Excuse me." She stood up from the couch and walked into her shared room. She threw herself on her bed and felt her eyes become heavy. She didn't realize how tired she actually was in the midst of everything. Her eyes closed and she dozed off into a slumber.
What Hermione thought would be a nap ended up to be actually a deep sleep. She was awoken by the sound of her Slytherin roommates being loud per usual.
"Did you guys....No way, Lara!" Giggles erupted as Hermione tried to muffle the sound by covering her ears with her pillow.
"I know. I never thought he'd kiss me first but he did." Another voice, presumably Lara, spoke.
"Abraxas doesn't seem that loving." So Abraxas had a girlfriend.
"He's much different when he's away from Riddle." She spat his name like it was venom. Hermione's ears perked up at the conversation.
"Did you hear? Riddle got his ass handed to him in DADA the other day." A collective gasp came out.
"By who?" Someone else said. There was a silence that followed and Hermione could feel their eyes on her. She tried to stay still to try and convince them she was still asleep, which thankfully worked.
"Should we wake her?" Lara asked. "It's almost time to go."
"No. She should get used to it herself." One of the voices said. Hermione rolled her eyes at how welcoming they were.
"Okay let's go." When the door closed, Hermione quickly got up and rushed to get ready for the day. She had about 30 minutes to get prepared, which was more than enough since she didn't wear much makeup.
She threw on her green Slytherin robes, which was still weird to adjust to from her red and yellow Gryffindor robes. After taming her bed-head and brushing her teeth, she grabbed her books and sped out of the now empty common room.
Her classes went by fast, except for when she had to walk past Tom and his friends. She managed to successfully ignore their crude stares and gave them no attention.
In class, Tom seemed to stare and Hermione would catch him. She didn't know why he was constantly watching her, but she thought of it was a good thing.
If he began to trust her, she could get him to change his morales. Unless it was too late.
After a long day, Hermione couldn't restrain herself from entering the library. She was in search of a rare book she'd always wanted to read before it got lost from the Hogwarts Library.
The library was quiet, mainly because everyone was back in their rooms. The library always felt like her home because of how comfortable and homey it felt.
She quietly entered and bee-lined for the fiction section. As she searched through the tall bookshelf, she jumped when someone tapped her shoulder lightly.
The girl turned around with her hand on her chest to find the redhead that sat next to her in class looking at her.
"Merlin. You scared me." She laughed.
"Oh, sorry." He gave a small smile.
"It's okay." She looked around to find him alone. "Is something wrong?"
"Oh, no! It's just....well, I don't know. I know this sounds weird but, I've been watching you." Hermione raised an eyebrow.
"Not weird at all." He laughed.
"I mean, I've noticed that you're new. And you're really not like the other Slytherins." She held her breath. Was it really that obvious she didn't belong?
"Everyone knows about how you almost beat Tom Riddle in DADA." She nodded.
"That was nothing." She tried to brush it off, but a part of her wanted to flaunt it.
"It's not nothing! It's really cool." His eyes lit up adorably.
"Thanks." She smiled.
"I was wondering if you'd like to be friends? I know Gryffindor and Slytherins are really friends but..."
"Of course!" She interrupted without realizing.
"Really? Great! I'm Bryan. Weasley. Bryan Weasley." Weasley. Hermione could definitely see some Ron in him.
Ron. She suddenly felt sad remembering him.
"I'm Hermione Granger." He nodded before glancing down at his watch.
"Blimey. I've got to go, but I'll see you in class?"
"Yes, of course."
"Bye, Hermione." She smiled and watched him leave the library.
She turned towards the bookshelf again but froze when she felt another presence in the aisle. She looked around, but didn't find anyone.
"Hello?" She said loudly, which resulted in her being shushed by the librarian.
The girl shook it off as her hallucinating from lack of sleep and went back to searching.
"Bryan Weasley?" Hermione didn't even realize her wand was pulled out when she turned around to face the voice.
A pair of onyx eyes stared back at her as her wand rested under his chin. She debated putting it down, but kept it there to protect herself in case he tried anything.
"What are you doing here?" She said sternly. The question should've been, when did he get there? He wasn't there two seconds ago.
"You can put your wand down." He put his hand over hers and brought it down, but Hermione pulled away.
"Don't touch me." She stepped away from him but still brought her wand down.
"First rule you should know, Gryffindors and Slytherins aren't friends." He informed. She scoffed.
"Says who?" He straightened his back.
"Me." Hermione rolled her eyes and was about to turn around before he spoke again.
"I've figured you out." She laughed.
"Oh really? Do tell." She challenged, to which he returned a smug smirk.
"You like Abraxas." He said matter-of-factly. She stared at him in disbelief.
"Are you serious?" She couldn't tell if he was joking. Right, like he knew what a joke was.
"Well, it makes sense. You're always looking at him." She couldn't believe he actually thought that.
"You're crazy." She turned and walked off, but he grabbed her wrist. Hermione felt his cold hands wrap around hers and froze.
She turned and looked at him.
"What are you doing?" She hissed.
"Where are you from? No-one just randomly comes here knowing that much about magic like you do." He narrowed her eyes at her which made her brain slow down. She couldn't find a proper answer.
"I told you, I'm from Durmstrang." He smirked devilishly.
"You said you were from Beauxbatons." Hermione mentally cursed herself for slipping up like that.
"That's what I meant." He let go of her wrist and nodded.
"I'll figure out who you are. I don't care if it means I go through hell and back." She shrugged, trying to stay calm. But it was hard to stay calm when she had Tom threatening to dig up her past.
"Good. And you'll find nothing." He turned around and stalked off, his robes swishing behind him.
Hermione gripped her books tightly as she tried to make sense of what just happened. This was really going to be hard.
