Chapter 3

Over the next few days, Dasia was busying herself by going through old family things. She had started in the attic, figuring that was where her grandmother kept most of the old family stuff. Needless to say as she looked around the attic, there wasn't much left, ten boxes all together. Maybe her grandmother just didn't keep stuff she didn't need around? Instead, she kept what she thought might be useful in the future and got rid of the rest?

She was barely half way through the second box when she could hear a noise coming from outside. Unsure what could be causing the noise outside the window. Going to the window, she looked down and was surprised to see Jasper was there amongst the trees and the fallen multi-colored leaves. Puzzled as to why he would be in the woods next to her house, it did make Dasia cautious.

"What is he doing out there?" she mumbled to herself as she watched him from the window.

She could tell he was saying something, her curiosity was getting the better of her and she had managed to open the window just a crack, hoping to hear what he might be talking about. She felt like she would nearly have to stick her head out the window just to hear anything.

"I would do anything, I mean anything to not have to marry Meredith." Jasper moaned in a sad and depressed tone while taking a box out of his pocket. "This ring, this is what is going to keep me trapped here. All thanks to my family and hers."

She could tell he was miserable, he really didn't want to marry Meredith, not that she could blame him. Her past experiences with Meredith, had often given Dasia nightmares when she was younger.

"I hope this works, Dad says it's only ever worked one time." Dasia heard Jasper say as he opened the box, taking the golden ring out and holding it up.

What was he going to do? Purposely lose the ring? They could just buy another one, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Rolling her eyes, Dasia was about to walk away, when she saw him bending down and placing the ring on what looked like a branch sticking up out of the ground. Not sure what he was thinking at that moment, she felt like she had to see what would happen. She heard him then start saying something in a strange language. Then he stood up and made a run for it out of the woods, she watched him as he made a run for it.

Once he was out of sight, she turned back to where he had been thinking she would see the ring on the random tree branch but she couldn't see it. Confused, she rushed down out of the attic and to the part of the woods she had seen Jasper. She searched all around for the branch and ring but there was nothing there, it was like it had disappeared.

"There is no way...maybe he just took it with him?" Dasia said as she turned back to the direction he went. "What is going on with this place?"

Later that night, Dasia sat on the front porch of her grandmother's house just drinking a cup of hot chocolate. So many thoughts were running through her head, she had no idea what to make of what she had seen happen earlier in the woods with Jasper. She hadn't even noticed that George had pulled up to his own house and was just getting out of his truck when he saw her.

"You ok over there?" George called out to her.

She seemed to be in a world of her own, or she just hadn't heard him call out to her. Usually he would have just left her alone, but something told him to go over and check on her. Barely stepping on the last step, he waved his hands and she finally looked over at him.

"Oh, hi there." Dasia smiled.

"You seemed to be in a world of your own. Are you doing alright?" he asked as he went to sit down beside her.

"Yeah, just a lot going on in my head. So many memories to go through and to even think about selling is actually kinda stressful." Dasia sighed as she took a sip of her drink.

"I can only imagine, after all I've only heard what your grandmother told me about you. She mentioned quite a few times about how you never wanted to come back here but now it's like you have to." George explainsas Dasia listens, wondering what all her grandmother may have told him.

"Well, I have to figure out what to do with all of this." she says motioning to the house behind her. "Instead I manage to come here, run into one of the biggest jerks I've ever met, meet a new person who I just happen to sleep with on the first day I meet them."

George smiled and shook his head, yes things went fast with her but he didn't regret any of it. The connection he felt with her was something he had never felt before and he truly wondered if he would ever feel it again.

"I actually liked you taking the first step, in my eyes you are truly one of the most beautiful women I have seen. You didn't wait and yes I know part of it was to make Meredith jealous but I think there was more to it, maybe we could be more in the future, if you'd be willing to give me a chance?" he wondered as she looked him right in the eyes and nodded.

"I think I'd like that, but I don't know how long I'll stay, afterall I still hate this town and all the memories of this."

"Maybe I'd come with you, you never know." George shrugs as he moves to stand up right as an expensive car pulls into Dasia's driveway. "Well, speaking of jerks, here he comes now."

George then sat back down in his previous seat. Jasper got out of the car in a panic and didn't even acknowledge Dasia or George sitting on the porch, instead he ran past them and into the woods behind the house. Curiosity got the better of both of them, Dasia and George followed right after Jasper. He went right to the same spot that Dasia had seen him before. Jasper was in pure panic, he was looking all over the floor of the woods, picking up any and every branch he could find until he heard one break behind him.

Turning their way, Jasper was all sweaty and had the true look of fear in his eyes. Dasia gulped in response, he looked desperate and that made her nervous. George came and placed himself before Dasia as if he was defending her.

"I can't find it, it was accepted, oh god...what have I done?" Jasper began his search again.

"What are you talking about?" George called out to Jasper.

"The ring, it must have accepted my vows, now I don't know what it'll do." Jasper called back to George, though he didn't seem to make much sense.

"I didn't want to marry her and I remembered this old story. I was told that if I vowed myself to something else I couldn't get married then." Jasper sighed as he leaned back against a tree. "The ring is gone, something accepted my vows."

What could have possibly have done that? She didn't understand his cause of panic and to be honest it made her worry more for his mental health more than anything else.

"You aren't making any sense, you probably are just letting your nerves get to you." Dasia said in a calm and gentle tone, to make sure she didn't upset him any further.

"Nerves would be the least of my problems, this is bad, a new kind of bad that my family has avoided for centuries. I don't know what will happen just because I was so dumb as to think I could get out of this marriage." Jasper ranted, he even was walking around in circles trying to form any kind of plan in his head.

It was strange to see Jasper in such a panic, truly this was a sight that Dasia had never seen before. Jasper was the one who always kept his head, at least that was what she thought when she saw him in high school. This sight was more troubling than amusing to her.

"Hey man, calm down, I'm sure you can get another ring and Meredith will never even know the difference." George tried to reassure him.

George had barely finished his sentence when a cold gust of wind blew between the three of us. Suddenly they didn't feel like they were the only three in that spot anymore. Goosebumps crept up their arms, sending shivers down their backs. Whatever was with them was not of the natural world. It was something evil, just from their senses they could tell.

"We are in serious trouble." Jasper sighed in defeat.

"We? I don't think I understand what you mean. Whatever you think is going to happen is all due to you, this is your fault, we had nothing to do with it." George retorted to Jasper.

"It won't care about that, what I did, it doesn't just affect me, but the whole town." Jasper said as he started to walk away, as if in a trance and no one could snap him out of it.

George scratched the back of his head as he looked back to Dasia, both of them had no idea what Jasper was talking about. Maybe he was drunk? All the pressure of marriage was finally getting to him? Neither of them could do much but take a guess as to why he was acting the

way he was, but they both knew something about him wasn't right.

The next day was the rehearsal dinner for Meredith and Jasper. Dasia wanted nothing to do with it, but after much convincing from a few of her old friends in town and George practically begging her to be his date, she conceded and went with him. Wearing a long dark green dress that she hadn't worn since and old formal from a time even she couldn't remember. She did her hair and make up knowing that with it being all about Meredith she would want everyone to dress just like they came out of a fashion catalog. This would be her best shot at it.
