[Chapter 70]: Guilty

"Do you solemnly swear that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"

"I solemnly, sincerely and truly declare that I will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." You echoed back to the courtroom deputy.

"The trial has commenced, you may all take your seats." Judge Saito announced after you completed your oath.

And so they did.

You sat there on that cold wood chair and thought back to the day before you started attending UA. It felt the same. You shifted in your seat uncomfortably, gripping its edges, just trying to hold yourself together.

This is it.

It all depends on a few words.

Guilty or not guilty.

Shifting your gaze to the side, you eyed the panel of six jurors sitting in the pews a few feet away. They whispered amongst themselves, anxiously waiting for Judge Saito to begin so they could get on with their day. You sighed quietly and turned in your chair to catch a glimpse at Katsuki, who stood against the wall at the back of the courtroom. He was clearly too antsy to sit down. His eyes locked with yours before he mouthed a few words.

'You're fine you idiot.'

Heh figures...

Even if for a split second, Katsuki's typical shrewd comfort put your mind at ease. You looked around him, slightly saddened by the absence of your teachers.

I wonder where they are...

Turning back around, you peered up at the judge as he shifted through his papers.

"We will start by restating the aforementioned charges; Aiding in a criminal organization and destruction of federal property. Would anyone like to open further discussion about the presented charges?" The room remained silent. "Very well. We will now proceed in reviewing the evidence."

"The League of Villains and I had a mutual agreement. They get to exploit her quirk as much as they want, and (y/n) has to fight the people she cares about. You wanna know the best part Bakugou?! She's not resisting because I'm their hostage! Can you imagine the look on her face when she finds out this whole set up-"

Bakugou paused the recording and glared over at the jury.

"So there you have it." Katsuki grumbled, attempting to hold back any of his usual profanity. "Questions?"

He paused it right before Takashi got to the part about me losing control.

You were thankful to Katsuki about a lot of things, but especially now. Without that recording, you knew that there wouldn't even have been a trial.

The jury was absolutely shocked. They couldn't even believe their own ears. Each of them took turns glancing at you with pitiful eyes. The tension in the room made the air thick and heavy. You didn't want pity at this point, but if it helped you receive an innocent sentence you would take all the pity you could get.

"If I may ask Miss (y/n), what was the League of Villains doing with your quirk? What was their goal?" One of the men from the jury questioned.

Do I lie?

You looked up at the juror. He looked reasonable and sincere enough.

No. There's no point. It won't help me.

"They never told me directly. But I... I think I have some sort of an idea." In the weeks you spent with their 'training' you had kinda begun to piece it together. "Their leader was trying to train me to be able to split an atoms core... In combination with stealing the shipment of polonium there's no doubt in my mind that they..." You swallowed thickly. "They wanted to use me as some kind of nuclear bomb..."

Whispers exploded out across the room.

"I see... Thank you for answering honestly Miss (y/n)." The man sat down.

"Another question." A woman stood. "The night of the Hosu incident, you were there correct?"

"Yes ma'am."

"There was video evidence of you destroying the west Hosu law firm. Do you deny this?"

"No, it was me who destroyed it." You firmly responded. The women raised an eyebrow.

"You're not even going to try to deny this claim?"

"If I did it, then I deserve to pay for it."

Her eyes softened. While you both were complete strangers, she knew you were being completely honest this whole time.

"And your motivation?"

"I was told that Takashi would be killed if I didn't. That was the only reason I cooperated with the League of Villains in the first place."

"I see... It was also reported that you attacked a fellow student. Todoroki Shouto if I correctly recall. Is he not here to speak on your behalf today?" You had already noticed his absence before. None of your friends or teachers were there. It honestly confused and scared you.

Where on earth is everyone...

"No ma'am... I suppose not."

It went on like that for awhile. The lawyer that judge Saito had assigned to you did a good job mediating everything. The jurors questioned you and a few others. You told them the truth, all about the conditions you had dealt with and the tasks you had done. You told them how you remain resilient to their attempts at breaking you. It was going well.

And then it was time for the sentencing.

"As discussed, if the defendant is found guilty, the sentence will be up to six years in a juvenile facility. Does anyone have any concerns about this?"

"I do sir."

Your eyes shot over to land on Mr. Furukawa. His hand was raised in a polite manner, as he slowly lifted up from his seat.

"I would like to propose an alternative sentencing option."

What on earth...

Although Judge Saito didn't care for anything Mr. Furukawa had to say, he had to abide by the law and hear the man out.

"Alright, what's your proposal?"

"I propose that rather than a detention facility, (y/n) should once again be placed under the full custody of the military. We wouldn't want another accident to happen."

Your stomach twisted, sending a wave of terror through your body. When you were held there, they didn't treat you especially inhuman or anything. But you were stuck in what was practically solitary confinement. At least if you went to a detention facility you could interact with other people. You swore you could hear the sound of Katsuki's blood boiling and his teeth gritting together in protest. Truth be told, he was trying really hard to not just walk over and beat the shit out of this guy.

"If you don't mind me asking, what accident are you referring to? We weren't informed of anything in the briefing." One of the jurors questioned.

No... Anything but this.

"Well since you asked, I feel obliged to answer." Mr. Furukawa started. "You see a little over a year ago (y/n)-"

"HOLD ON A FUCKING SECOND YOU SUIT WEARING PIECE OF-"

"ORDER IN THE COURT." Judge Saito commanded just as Katsuki began to go off. The seething blond silenced himself as more whispers erupted throughout the room. "Mr. Furukawa, we talked about this."

"If the jury has a question for the advocates of this court, I am obliged by law to answer Judge Saito." The man smirked. The room was quiet for a moment before the old judge groaned and gave in.

"Proceed..."

All you could do was sit there in a bitter silence as the military supervisor spilled out all the details of your family in front of the courtroom. He talked about your tests, your genetically engineered quirk, you losing control. It was utterly exposing and humiliating. But not only that, you knew deep down within yourself that it would also seal your fate.

The courtroom gathered together once more, the jurors now looking clearly conflicted about what kind of decision they should make. You just sat there and stared at the floor.

Katsuki stood at the back of the room silently, knowing that any further outbursts would only make things worse for you.

"The jury has come to a final verdict." One of the jurors stood and announced. Your throat tightened as you resigned yourself to close your eyes and just pray for some outside force to change your fate.

"We, the jury, find the defendant to be guilty of both presented charges."
