5: Misunderstanding
Jimin's by far a much more complicated boyfriend than what Jungkook was expecting from him.
And he was definitely not prepared for that.
In reality, he was prepared for the two to talk to each other more or act like those puke loving couples where they send heart emojis and love novels as text messages every morning - some ridiculous shit like that.
But, nope.
None of that.
In general, nothing.
The total opposite ended up happening actually.
That same day that they 'got together', Jungkook did ended up texting him saying that it's his number as confirmation.
Jimin didn't respond a back.
Jungkook sent a goodnight text, no response either.
And he sent it damn early too, so there's no way Jimin was sleeping at that time.
Following three days later, Jungkook waited for Jimin to text him back since like hell is he going to be chasing after anyone after being avoided twice, but still got nothing back. Those three days, Jungkook would just go to practice, focus on what he gotta do, and didn't even see Jimin before or after practice in the locker room.
Either this fucker is avoiding him now, or something is going on.
Jungkook doesn't know which one to make himself believe at this point, but it was slightly aggravating him this little silent treatment.
Now it's Thursday, past half a week of him being in a supposed relationship and still not hearing anything from Jimin.
So, in great dread, Jungkook decided to take this up a notch. He made sure this practice day to come early and stay in the locker room to wait for Jimin to come in, but throughout those thirty minutes not once did he see him. Even to the last volleyball player leaving, Jungkook did not see a glimpse of Jimin.
He ended up going to his practice five minutes late while the team was doing the field run, but coach isn't so strict with him since he knows Jungkook catches up pretty quick - to which he did.
Throughout the entire time in practice, Jungkook hates how all he thought about was Jimin and where the fuck he has been. He's the team captain for the volleyball team! He should be on time for his practice!
But then again, Jungkook couldn't even catch a glimpse of him after practice. Yesterday he did stay after for almost a damn hour, thinking that Jimin probably was practicing late or talking to his coach.
Yet he never saw him.
And still got no text from him.
Jungkook somewhat grew over his petty annoyed faze by this uneven ground him and Jimin are on at the moment, now entering this stage of sort of worry. Not exactly about their relationship status, but more so about Jimin. Maybe he did get annoyed with Jungkook's attitude and all, but to the point Jungkook doesn't see a glimpse of him anywhere, not even for practice, now that's a bit off.
Unless something actually happened to him....
Well, today he'll know for sure.
Jungkook made a mental note that after this practice, he was going to go directly to the gym instead of the locker room and see if he can spot him there.
Just to give himself that peace of mind that Jimin is okay, as in an athlete sense sportsmanship.
That's it.
That thought did make Jungkook become more focused for practice, unlike how he was earlier, but thankfully they were more so testing out their speed and stamina today rather than doing anything with the ball - coach's way on getting them in shape for the season.
It became a blur from there of these intense cardio work outs and whining players about a desperate break before practice finally ended. Jungkook didn't bother wasting time and quickly going to the locker room, hopping from foot to foot while he takes off his cleats and shoving a few people aside while he went to his locker and got his sneakers, shoving them on and not wasting time in dashing out the locker room again.
The volleyball team weren't in there yet, so that must mean they are still practicing, and hopefully meaning that Jimin is there.
Moving up a set of stairs and taking a turn to the wide open doors of the gym, he could already hear the noise of a ball smacking and intense shouting from the athletes.
Seeing it though, probably much more intense.
Usually Jungkook wasn't one to pay much attention to other sporting events. Perhaps women's football because the team is really close with the men's football, so they sometimes organize time to practice or see each other's games, but that's about it.
This is the first time Jungkook is entering unfamiliar waters.
And he was completely blown away.
The second he stepped into the gym, a loud smack echoed the walls brutally. Jungkook practically felt the damn air gush through the loose three strands of hair from his face, eyes dilating in shock when it came from a rough hand landing against the ball while the athlete jumped in the air.
A perfect serve.
The force was so hard that it flew to the other side, but immediately was received by a defender with a shout. The ball is in the air again, toss, toss, spike -
A wall of two players jumped up and blocked the ball from entering their zone, just as the person spiked it. The ball is falling now, nearly touching the ground if it wasn't for a fist that came to view and smacked the ball up in the air.
That followed by a loud and painful squeak.
Jungkook snaps his eyes to who took that beautiful save, and the air choked in his throat when he sees the familiar silhouette of the man he hasn't heard of in days. The save he did consisted of him literally throwing himself to the ground, gliding and forcing the ball into the game again.
Yet no matter how shrill the slide sounded, the man was on his feet again and ready for another ball.
With thighs and forarms burning pink.
"THAT'S OUR CAPTAIN! LET'S GO!"
"NICE SAVE SPEEDY!"
Speedy?
Is that what they call him by here?
Jungkook didn't think of it so much, but only kept his eyes on Jimin - who's to the other side of the court and definitely one to have a good view to where Jungkook is right now - but Jungkook quickly moves along the wall of the gym and goes to sit on one of the bleachers instead.
He doesn't want Jimin to lose his focus.
So Jungkook stayed on the side, watching this sport that he heard of before and knew about but never tried watching it since it just didn't catch his interest.
But now being here, this sport is equally just as intense as any other sport out there - even if it doesn't involve a lot of running or physical contact with the opposing team.
There's many good players in it too. There's this tall one that jumps and spikes like crazy, the one that hit the ball when Jungkook got here. He doesn't get too over hyped about his successful hits, but has this focus in his gaze as though now is not the time for celebration until there's a win for sure.
Then there's one that's in the same team as him, equally as tall with the biggest eyes Jungkook has ever seen. He's by the net most of the time, and with his height advantage he's like a brick wall whenever a spiker from the opposing team tries to get through him. He's more motivational, clapping it up for the team and pushing them to keep going.
Another one has to be from the opposing team - probably a defender? - most of the time in the back middle or either side of the back, or maybe Jungkook's eyes can't catch the positions well. Anyways, he's not so tall as the spiker or that blocker, but he's fast as hell when receiving a ball in his area, or just in general. There's no doubt that spiker gets annoyed with this player, since he can just never get through him.
Then lastly, Jungkook's loving and somewhat boyfriend, Jimin. Not to be biased, since Jungkook still doesn't like the guy, but Jimin has some of the fastest reflexes Jungkook has ever seen. It's as though he senses where the ball is going and coming, being ready to flung himself aside to receive it or put it into play. He doesn't play safe, if he has to throw himself on the ground or slide to the point his thighs rub against the polished floor, he doesn't care.
He does whatever it takes to not get that ball to touch the ground.
From Jungkook's sharp memory, he recalls the conversation Jimin had with his teammates when they first spoke to each other, about him being a Libero. Observing and judging the game well, Jungkook has came to notice that unlike anyone else, Jimin doesn't do the spike jumps or blocks. He just receives most of the time, but also is one of the only players that does switch out with another player often, but when he gets back in, he is always on either position on the back.
Jungkook doesn't know much about volleyball, doesn't quite get the rules either, but one thing for sure is that Jimin can sure as hell play well. For some reason there was a one time where he had to serve, and to say that his jump and strength against the ball blew him away would be an understatement.
At that moment, watching him play, Jungkook for a second did feel a twinkle of admiration act up. He's a sucker for athletes. He loves seeing a player putting their all into a game, stay so focused and demonstrate how this is anything but just a sport to them.
It's life.
And right now, Jimin is breathing in that life.
It shows how much this means to him. How much he's willing to go just to make sure his team doesn't lose, and having that thrive is something Jungkook also sees in himself too when he plays. Maybe that's why Jungkook is a little drawn to athletes, since he just feels as though he can relate to them in some way, or they can relate to each other.
And right now, this feels like the first time that Jungkook doesn't completely get annoyed by Jimin's guts.
If anything, he's fascinated by him.
Completely fascinated.
A loud whistle blows out, shuttering Jungkook out of his trance as he watches coach dismiss the team without so much as a meeting. Seems like he did all of that before their scrimage game, so he didn't let them suffer another earful talk.
The second Jimin heard the whistle, he completely collapses to the floor. An arm is shielding his eyes while the other is on his abdomen, breathing heavily while other players would tap him as they leave for the good game.
After all, his team won.
Jungkook didn't waste time in approaching him, not caring the odd looks he would receive from the team by seeing a football player in their territory, and only approaches Jimin on the floor calmly.
The closer he got, the more he captured the bruises on Jimin's legs and arms, along with the fresh red when he would slide and throw himself on the floor. He's glistening in sweat, panting heavily while his legs trembled.
He really did put a lot of effort out there today.
Standing there in front of him now, Jungkook did feel a tad bit bad. He knows how it feels to run out of energy, or to just burn out after such a hard day.
But Jimin can't leave here without at least proper stretching, athlete rule after a play.
So he glances to the leg that's knee plopped up and leans down, grabbing his ankle. Jimin just barely reacted, but he did raise his arm a bit to see who it was. Jungkook couldn't tell if he was grinning out of smugness or delusion from the game, but his lips did twitch up while Jungkook raised his leg up and keeping it straight in line before pushing it it towards him - holding it in place.
"I didn't see you come in."
Jungkook eases his leg a bit back to relax his muscles but then pushes it farther forward slowly, keeping it straight. Jimin flinches a bit but waves a hand for Jungkook to push his leg farther more to him before signalling him to stop and hold it there.
"Didn't want to distract you," Jungkook mutters back, avoiding Jimin's set of eyes while he ease the leg once again a bit but this time bends his knee and leans down, pressing it to Jimin's chest.
Once again Jimin flinches to the stretch on his muscles, but held himself together, "Aren't you generous."
"You weren't planning on leaving without stretching right?"
"I just jog it off most of the time going back home."
Now Jungkook winces to the thought of that. Stretching is the most important part after a tough work out. It helps ease the muscles and soothes them, keeping them flexible and prevent any serious injuries.
That little habit has to change just a bit.
Jungkook stretches his leg down and does the same process with the other leg, being surprised really by Jimin's flexibility as it is despite not relying so much on stretching, "Start stretching after practice, it'll be a life saver."
"Are you worrying about me? I thought you didn't like me so much?"
"Is that why you were avoiding me?"
"The semester hasn't started yet. I usually use this time for focus on volleyball and practice rather than which color to pick. Next week you'll have more of my attention."
So Jimin is being himself now.
Must be..... New waters for him.
Not like Jungkook is about to point it out either way.
"Just because the semester hasn't started doesn't mean we're not together."
For some reason Jimin's cheek grew a bit pink to this bold commentary, now looking away from Jungkook's gaze while he pressed his knee to his chest, "I-I mean yeah but it's more just a time for space for me to organize myself and you know.... Since you aren't so interested in me, didn't think it'd be a big deal for you."
"Oh it isn't," Jungkook assures, putting his leg down before reaching towards Jimin's hands, to which the other man lets him take and he gets him to sit up, "I just want us to have good communication. The last thing I want and need at the moment, and I'm assuming you can agree with this too, is for this to get toxic with conclusion jumping and that stuff. We both have busy schedules, but at least give me a sign that I didn't do something shitty."
Jimin processes this for a second, really thinking it through with a heavy gaze to the ground before he nods understandingly, "Yeah I get it, same goes for you though. I'll just be honest and say now that through messages I really suck at responding back, I just don't find time in doing so. Just don't take it too personally."
"Don't worry about it," Jungkook mutters, spreading Jimin's legs a bit by nudging his ankles aside, "I get that you need your space and I don't want you to have to feel pressured in doing anything, just.... Do what you gotta do," And Jungkook trails behind him, squating down while pressing his hand to Jimin's back, "But don't forget that I'm still your boyfriend."
Jimin once again smiles sheepishly to this and let's Jungkook's hands guide him to lean forward to the space between his parted legs. Once again did Jimin show his flexibility in being able to reach so far and even pushing himself more forward to a split.
He's way too flexible for a volleyball player.
Now Jungkook was curious, "Are you in the cheerleading team or something?"
"I was in high school, did it for freshman year of college but then decided to do basketball instead for the winter season," He says calmly, slowly stretching up while arching his back a bit while moving his head side to side, "You're looking at the captain now."
Captain of the basketball team too?
Good for him.
Jungkook tried not too feel a little leap in his chest, now hiding his own small smile while he guides Jimin's arms to stretch his upper body - being careful to not touch on the bruises.
"You probably heard about this but there's a party in celebration to the start of the season and going back to class this Saturday. Lacrosse team is hosting it and obviously our teams are included in going," Jimin suddenly says, letting Jungkook press on his back as he touched his toes, "Do you usually go to these events?"
"Not before, but as a captain I guess I have to participate this year since it's my last year."
"You're the captain?" Jimin questions, just as he was easing back, "Football right?"
"Mhm."
"Oh.... Well, this year I'm also going too," He seemed hesitant in asking the next thing, and Jungkook gave him the time and space to not rush, "Want to.... Go together? As a couple I mean."
Jungkook didn't have to think about it too much, since after all he doesn't have strong feelings about things in general.
So he gets to his feet, extending a hand out to him, "Now what kind of boyfriend would I be if I said no?"
"Did me ignoring you changed your whole personality or something?"
The scowl is now evident on his face, bubbling a laugh from Jimin's wet lips as he accepts Jungkook's hand and gets to his feet, "Guess not."
The ravenette remains with his scowl but didn't let go of Jimin's hand, nor did Jimin retreat his hand away from his, while the two now make their way to the doors, "Believe it or not, when I'm in a relationship I'm actually decent."
"I'm sure you are. That's why you asked me out to gain experience right?"
Oh right that lie.
Well, now Jungkook definitely does not know how to respond to that and Jimin seems to have taken that as his point being proven, smoothly interlacing their hands together while leaning to Jungkook's side.
"Your heart will melt right through me baby, you'll see."
Something about those words tweaked with Jungkook's head.
Simple words that provoked such a mass irritation in his body, maybe even aggravated because he absolutely hates when people try to be overly confident about his own feelings. Smug to how he's going to do something to their satisfaction.
And hearing that coming from Jimin, out of all people, pissed him off.
If only Jimin knew his real intentions, he wouldn't be talking so much right now.
This aggravation fired him up so much that it got to the point it made him calm.
Up until they reached the double doors to go down the stairs that leads to the hall where the locker rooms are. Jungkook yanked Jimin back by their hands when he was about to take a step down the stairs, forcing him to his chest but at the same time shoving him to the wall.
Now this caught Jimin a bit by surprise, but that smug grin was planting his lips when he notices Jungkook's evident glare. He lazily leans his head back against the wall, perking his eyebrows with this stupid smirk on his lips.
"Did I make you upset baby?" Jungkook is stepping closer to him, Jimin's condescending tone lingering his ears, "Don't like to be challenged huh?"
"Don't provoke me," Jungkook mutters bitterly, placing a hand against the wall and beside Jimin's head, "You never had someone like me as a boyfriend, so don't act cocky."
"Not the first time I've heard that before," Jimin whistles, his smirk slightly deflating, "What now? Force me to submit to you? Mark me up to behave? Kiss me until I can't breathe? Ha, anything you were planning to do I'm already one step ahead. You're not the first nor last one who has this alpha male tendency for others to do whatever he wants."
For the first time since Jungkook has met Jimin, this has to be the first time he has surprised him.
Did he really....
Does he really think Jungkook is like that?
What type of boyfriends did he have before?
Sure, Jungkook wants Jimin to fall for him, get payback or have him get back together with Yoongi - whatever he's meant to do - but not through force on him.
Not anything without his consent.
Jungkook studies him, Jimin looking back at him with a waiting stare as though he's waiting for Jungkook to do whatever he just said.
But clearly was surprised when Jungkook did the opposite.
He stepped back.
Now Jungkook looks at him a bit disappointed.
Sure, he's had people say he's a punk, looks like a delinquent and unmoral for the world.
But never disrespectful like that.
To act like..... That.
Sure, him and Jimin are dating, but just because they have a title doesn't give him the right to do things like that unless the other is okay with it. Vocally says they're okay with it.
This is stupid.
Whatever, Jungkook doesn't want to spoil him mind like this right now.
So without another word he just turns and goes down the stairs.
And Jimin definitely was not expecting that.
Jungkook at the moment didn't care whether he did or not, all he knew is that he just needed to get his mind away from that.
The labeling.
That specifically.
"Woah wait wait back up," A gentle hand on his elbow stop him as he was mid way down the staircase, but he didn't turn around, instead Jimin steps down to his side while studying his frosty eyes, "Did I offend you with what I said?"
Jungkook takes two more steps down but Jimin's grip tightens, stopping him again and following him down, "Hey stop okay. I'm sorry if what I said hurt you. I just.... Shit, this is new to me okay? I'm not use to being like this. I always have a color to go by and you're popping up before the semester and I don't know how to act-"
"Like yourself," Jungkook mutters, tugging his arm away from his hand, still not looking at him, "But that gives you no right to assume things about me just because of your experience with your past relationships, just saying."
And nothing more was said. Jungkook continues down the stairs, not bothering to turn around and just head straight for the locker room. There's a few volleyball players here, already leaving, so Jungkook only avoids them while trailing to his locker and shoving combination before unlocking it.
The first thing he sees there staring back at him is not just his duffle bag ready to change and head home.
But also his hockey skates with the stick.
For Winter Season, hockey is his sport. Captain as well, and definitely good in it too.
He loved skating so much, and now it's only been difficult because the rink wasn't open.
Now it is for preseason work outs, but Jungkook is doing football now so he can't exactly make time for it. It's not like he has to either way, it's more so for practice and keeping up the energy, more so optional.
Hmm...
Thinking it over for a good moment, Jungkook didn't hesitate in grabbing his skates with the stick along with his duffle bag, slamming his locker shut behind him. He takes out his phone and unlocks it while he exits the locker room, moving past the section where Jimin was changing his clothes.
Not noticing the heavy stare he's sending him, or the twitching frown on his lips. Jungkook just walks out of the locker room with a phone to his ear, hearing it ring.
It took three rings before Jungkook heard a familiar voice to the other line.
"What a surprise? You good?"
"Not really," Jungkook admits, "Are you in class?"
"No I'm home, what's up?"
"I'm heading to the rink, wanna join me?"
"Ugh..... I have homework to do."
Jungkook rolls his eyes, "Sleep over tonight and I'll help you."
"Ughhhhhhhhhh."
Now Jungkook is the one feeling like whining to his stubbornness, "Please Taehyung."
There's another groan in the other line, but Jungkook can physically imagine Taehyung's twitching smile through the call, especially by his tone to his following answer, "Fine, but let me warm up first when I get there. Don't want you getting rough on me when while I practice."
Now this made Jungkook smile, "You got it."
