Chapter 2: The Lantern Corps
When Lance opened his eyes, he found himself in front of a strange monument. It looked like it was a mix between ancient ruins and techno marvel, built together. It was a cool design. The sky was above was a swirl of colors, all blending together in harmony. He couldn't help but feel his breath be taken away from the sight.
"Whoa~" He hears and turned to see Hunk emerge from a swirl of yellow light, and Pidge appearing from green light. Lance looks behind himself to see the blue light that he came from as it disappears, along with the other masses of colored light. He turns back to his friends, and notices they're in similar outfits to him.
"Guys?" He asks and the two notice him, and each other.
"Lance? Pidge?" Hunk asks looking between the two.
"Where are we?" Pidge asked looking around the strange place.
"You are at the Lantern Corps Headquarters." A voice answered. The three look up to see a strange man literally float down and land in front of them. The only way to describe this man was, alien.
The guy is a tall, slender, with human-like appearance, but had a pale white skin tone and black tattooed markings on his face. His eyes were pretty much entirely blue. Not like whited out, but his sclera was light blue, his iris dark blue and pupils bluish-grey. He was wearing a red version of their outfit, with black leggings, red boots, gloves and a red helmet with two horns protruding from it.
"Welcome. It seems were have some new recruits. I am Razer, of the Red Lanterns." He introduces himself. "May I inquire your names?" He asks them.
"Uh... I'm Lance... The guy in yellow is Hunk, and the other is Pidge." Lance says.
"Excuse me, Mr. alien sir." Hunk suddenly spoke. "But where are we? What's going on? And what's the deal with these rings?" The yellow one asks nervously.
"Calm yourself. I'll take you to the guardians, they will explain everything." Razer replies and begins leading them up the steps of the building before them. Though hesitant, the trio decide to follow the guy as they figured it was the only way to get answers. The trio walked behind the alien guy, following him into the building and down the massive hallways.
"Razer." A voice called and from one of the halls, and came a human looking boy, dressed in a similar red uniform to the said alien guy. It didn't take long for Lance to recognize the boy. Especially from the hair-style.
"Wha-? Keith!?" He said in surprise. Indeed, standing before them, next to the alien guy was Keith Kogane himself. He had disappeared after he was booted from the Garrison about 6 months ago. The said boy turned to Lance when he spoke his name, he looked confused.
"Uh... who are you? New recruits?" He asked looking at them.
"What? Don't you recognize me?" Lance asked. Keith just shook his head. "The name's Lance. We were in the same class at the garrison." He said.
"Really? Were you an engineer?" the one clad in red asked.
"What? No I'm a pilot. We were like rivals. You know, Lance and Keith, neck and neck." He explained. A look of realization suddenly sprout on Keith's face.
"Oh, yeah. You were a cargo pilot." He said. That sentence miffed Lance.
"Well, not anymore. I'm fighter class thanks to you washing out." He says back.
"Oh, good for you then?" Keith said unsure, Lance looked upset. Just before it could escalate, Razer steps in between the two.
"Okay, it's clear there's history between you two but we'll have to discuss this later. For now we need to go see the guardians so they can explain to the new Lanterns." He says to them.
"Okay, far be it for me to interrupt." The red boy said and turned to walk away.
"Actually Keith, the Guardians want to see you as well." The alien guy stated with a stern expression, and Keith barely flinched. "Come along." He said and began leading them down the halls until they came to a door. The door opens and Razer proceeds to lead them into the room.
Said room was large, circular in shape and above them sat a sort of balcony with eight chairs situated in a curved pattern. Each chair was a different color, going in order, red, orange, yellow, green, black, blue, indigo and violet. Below the balcony was a path and a circular platform they were standing on. Suddenly, seemly from the ceiling, descended seven beings, all dressed in colored cloaks, with symbols on their chests, similar to the rings the trio had.
The cloaked beings landed in front of the seats that matched their cloak color, their arms all crossed. Only the orange seat was empty. It was hard to get a good look at their features because of their hoods. You could barely made out the bottom halves of their faces, despite that being the only part of their faces uncovered. The beings suddenly uncross their arms and sit down in the chairs with their hands on the chair arms.
"Keith Kogane of Earth." The one in black said in smooth mature voice. "We have heard of an incident involving you. Again." While the guy's, sounded like a guy, tone seemed neutral, there were undertones of annoyance. Keith looked down. The black one sighed.
"Once again, you caused a scene because you were unable to control your anger." The black one stated, then seemed to turn his attention to Razer. "Razer of Volkreg. You are his mentor, are you not? Can you not control him?" He asked. Razer looked at Keith before looking back up at the black guy.
"If I may?" The red one suddenly spoke. Sounded male too, only his voice was deep and gravely. "Keith and Razer are both part of my corp, shouldn't I be the one to talk to them?" He inquired.
"Yes, but as usual, you tend to pick ones that have severe discipline issues Crimsous." Stated the Indigo one, in a soft smooth voice, that made it hard to tell if it was a man or woman.
"Guardians, I understand, but if I may, I believe we have some newbies who have questions." Razer said and gestured their attention to the trio.
"Ah, it seems we do. We will talk more about this matter later." The black one said and turned his attention to the Garrison trio. "Welcome new recruits, to Lantern Corps headquarters. We are the Guardians, the council of the Lantern Corps. Each of us has our own Lantern Corp of different meanings." The black one introduced. "You three have been chosen by our fellow Guardians to be Lantern officers to protect the universe. We have summoned you here to train for just that." He explained.
"Uh..." Lance raised his hand, the black one gestured for him to speak. "I'm sorry, but I'm only getting like half of what you guys are saying here. You chose us? Why us specifically? What's the deal with these rings? What do you mean by corps? Also, what's with all the colors? I'm still confused." He rambled a little.
"As I stated, each of us Guardians has a color, a color that represents a different power. The rings you have grant you the power of the guardian that has chosen you." The black one explained. "You, Lance McClain of Earth, were chosen by Ceruleas here. His power is of hope." He said as he gestured to the guy in blue. Lance noticed he had the same symbol on his cloak as the ring and his chest.
"We guardians search the universe, granting power through the rings to those we find worthy. Those who will help protect the innocent from threats. Including another who has come." He said and seemed to look at the door. The others turn to see slight movement by the doorway, soon another person walked in. This one a human man, dressed in a black bodysuit, with grey markings, his symbol vastly different from theirs. Wait a sec, Lance knew this guy. No way! It was actually...!
"Shiro?" Before Lance could even open his mouth, Keith beat him to it. The raven-haired boy ran past the trio and hugs the man. Who was surprised for a moment before returning the embrace.
"So you're the famous Shiro I've heard so much about." Razer said as he stepped over to the two as they separated. "I'm guessing you are the new lantern that had been out for a while when you came here then?" He asked.
"I-I don't know, it's all a blur. I was told to come here." The human man replies.
"Takashi Shirogane of Earth." The black guy suddenly spoke and the Garrison pilot turned to him. "I take it you heard enough then. As I said, each of us have a Lantern corp and we choose individuals we feel best suit ours." He explains.
"Uh... what corp exactly, and how do you even know who we are? Or that we're best suited to these, "corps"?" Pidge suddenly asked. The Guardians looked down at the center of the platform, and the inner circle of it lit up.
"We Guardians are Spectrites. We each represent a power through color." The Black one began as the circle displayed the cloaked people and their colors.
"Crimsous Corp are the Red Lanterns, who represent rage. Year's Corp are the Yellow Lanterns, who represent fear. Willows Corp are the Green Lanterns who represent willpower. As said before, Ceruleas Corp are the Blue Lanterns, who represent hope. Inarious Corp are the Indigo Lanterns, who represent compassion. Starphire Corp are the Violet Lanterns, who represent love. And finally I am Reapier, my Corp are the Black Lanterns, who represent death." He explained the colored corps and their meanings. Shiro looked disturbed.
"Am I dead then?" He suddenly asked looking down at himself, particularly his metal prosthetic arm.
"No," the black one, Reapier, replied shaking his head. "My corp is made of individuals who have actually cheated death as you would. Those with top notch survival skills, and ability to keep going." He explains. "You were captured and held prisoner for a year, yet you managed to keep going and survive in that terrible environment. That is why I chose you. My lanterns in particular are very few. It's hard to find those who have the same strengths you have." He finished.
"As for how we know you..." The Black Lantern guardian said as he waved his arm and an image appeared in the circle. "We guardians search across the universe to find those to join us." He says as the images flashes, showing the four humans.
"Lance McClain of Earth." The blue one, Ceruleas, suddenly spoke. "Despite your struggles and constantly being overshadowed..." at that the blue one shot a look at Keith, who flinched. The circle below showed images of Lance and his time in the Garrison. "You have progressed and never lost sight of your goal, keeping a hopeful look in even the most impossible situations." The being explained.
"Tsuyoshi Garret of Earth." The yellow one, Year, spoke next. "While you constantly are crippled by your fear, you still find the strength to overcome it, in times when you are in need to help others. Fear is hard to concur, but learning to do so helps you channel that fear into power." The being spoke as the circle images showed Hunk and his shining moments. The said teen looked unsure, and Lance patted his best friend on the shoulder in support.
"Katie Holt of Earth." The green one, Willows, spoke now, causing said girl to flinch. "Despite suffering from tremendous loss, and being put down, you keep your resolve and willpower to find the truth and keep moving forward." They explained. Images appeared on the screen to show Pidge when she was Katie, with long hair and in a dress, the news of her father and brother, and Iverson.
"You have now heard our reasons and we have explained the powers." Reapier said then turn to Razer. "Razer of Volkreg, take them to the training grounds. We shall summon their respective instructors to teach them how to use their new powers." He said. The Red Lantern nodded.
"Um, excuse me." Lance suddenly spoke. "Sorry to interrupt, but I was wondering, why is the orange chair empty? Is there another corp we should know about?" He asks, directing towards the empty chair. The guardians all turned to said chair, as did the other newbie Lanterns. Actually they were curious about that as well.
"That seat is Abrarice's. His corp were the Orange Lanterns of avarice, or greed." Reapier answered. "But he is no longer a part of this council." He added.
"Oh... Was his lantern corps dangerous since it was of greed? So you had to kick him out." Lance followed up.
"No, actually Abrarice refused to give out any rings at all." Reapier answered. The trio, plus Shiro, all anime fell. Seriously? "He was so greedy he kept all rings to himself. We told him if he didn't recruit any Lanterns then he would have to leave, which he did, gladly. We have no idea where he is at this point. Most likely holed up somewhere with his treasures." The being added.
"Yes, well..." Razer suddenly cut in. "I shall escort you to the training grounds now." The Alien man said and led the others out of the room.
"Razer of Volkreg." Reapier suddenly spoke as they were at the door. "Make sure to keep you "student" under control." He said sternly. Before Keith could say anything, Razer intervened.
"Yes, sir." He said and they all walk out of the room and down the hall.
