Hayden - Too Soon

CherylMander

"Aren't you supposed to say 'I love you' after you get together?" She spoke with an amused giggle.

I was gaze down at the ground when my body freezes upon hearing her words. My relaxed mood suddenly took a complete 360 and I was now feeling anxious.

I straighten my posture. "R-Really?"

I sat leisurely on a bench outside of the palace, talking on the phone and enjoying the nice weather while talking to May on the phone. The air was a little chilly, but the sun shone down on the spot I sat, bathing me in its warm rays of light.

Though at first I was happy to talk to May, her comment, which she probably didn't think much of echoed in my head soon after we ended the call. She probably just said it as a joke but, somehow I let it get to my head, and I began over thinking it.

Too soon? Well, we did want to be with each other for a while, and just put it off because we knew it probably wouldn't work...but then again, he hadn't been clear about his feelings until we decided to get together...

I began walking back into the palace through the back entrance when I run into a familiar figure standing beside the heavy wooden door.

The tall man had dark, well combed hair and an elegant suit on. He had his hands folded in front of him as he impatiently tapped his foot as we stood.

"Um...excuse me?" I walk up to him, wondering if he was maybe a lost guest.

He turned and sighed upon seeing my face. "There you are. I was wondering when you would get off the phone. Do you usually talk for that long?"

Sieg seemed upset for some reason and his wording made it sound like he was waiting for me.

"Prince Sieg...It's been awhile since I last saw you. Um, right now...could it be that your lost?"

He huffed as he turned his head away. "No. I was looking for you earlier and I spotted you chatting away on your phone."

"Um...what can I help you with?"

"I just wanted to stop by to see if you had any good recipes to share with me." He says in his usual cool tone. His fowl mood quickly dispersed as he spoke of his intentions.

"Oh, of course I can share some with you." I smile softy, opening the door heavy door for him to enter the kitchens. We are met with the scents of various different foods that were being prepared for dinner. The cooks turn towards the door and greet us cheerfully, of course, tensing up upon spotting Prince Sieg.

Nonetheless, the Prince walks up to each pot and pan, curious to see what was cooking. When he began talking to the chefs, the tension that had visibly built up on their face was dispersed. Chatting about something that they had in common broke the ice as soon as it froze.

From the other side of the kitchen, Prince Hayden walks in scouting the area, looking for something, I quickly make my way over to him for no particular reason.

"Hayden...were you looking for something?" I ask after walking up to him. "If you're looking for Prince Sieg, he's right there." I point over to to the stove beside the door.

Hayden's blue eyes wonder to where Prince Sieg was before they land on me. "I was actually looking for you. You were with Sieg?" He asks with almost a frown.

Uh oh.

This had happened once before. That face of his. It's the face that causes his forehead to wrinkle a little and the ends of his mouth to tug downward ever so slightly.

"Y-Yeah. He just wanted to talk about baking." I reassure him, a little bit intimidated by his sour looking expression.

It felt a little awkward, Sieg and I got to talk about a little bit of baking, but Hayden was shadowing us all over the kitchen while it happened. I didn't mind, but Sieg was looking visibly uncomfortable.

"Listen Hayden...I'm not going to take your girlfriend so you can stop following us around." Sieg smirks, clearly poking fun at Hayden.

Hayden pauses in his hurried footsteps to catch up, and glares at Sieg. "I'm not worried about that, I just want to learn more about baking, that's all.

"Oh, is that right?" The Dres Van Prince smirks in amusement before turning back to me.

We wrap up our conversation after talking about carrot cake and head out to the dining room to have dinner. After that, Sieg went to the room he was staying at to rest, while Hayden and I went to ours,

I take a seat, stuffed from the delicious meal and sigh with content. "That was delicious. I bet Sieg can whip up something just as good too. He must have asked for the recipe earlier in the kitchens. He seemed to really enjoy it." I kept on the topic of his good friend.

Hayden kept his back turned to me as he walked further into the room, not uttering a single word.

I got a chill down my back from the silence emitting from his usual kind and cozy self. Somehow the atmosphere in the room felt somewhat tense, much like it did when we first met.

I was worried about his sudden change in demeanor but decided not take make much of it. I open the small notebook of recipes I had been carrying around with me and begin to scribble down random ideas that I had gotten throughout the day. If he wasn't going to continue the conversation, I wasn't going to try to force it.

"Sieg this, Sieg that. All you've been going on about, thinking about today... is Sieg."

I look up from my burgundy leather notebook and chuckle light heartedly. "Come on...you're really not going to blow that out of proportion are you? Sieg and I just have somewhat of the same hobby. You don't have to worry about us being too close."

"But I do have to worry. I might not have to worry about you, but I do have to watch out for him. It's not the first time that he looks at you with those eyes." He sighs, clearly irritated by my previous answer to his concerns. "Those eyes that look at you in wonder."

I go back to writing. "But you really don't have to worry. He would never look at me with such intent. I'm just a commoner to him and somehow we're acquaintances."

"You're wrong!"

My pen begins to bleed all over my notebook. It had broken from the tip somehow. I get up from the couch and make my way to the trash bin near the entrance of the room. I was feeling a little panicked about my pen, and his loud statement surprised me, but somehow, I was able to stay calm. "You may be overreacting a little-"

"I'm not overreacting, and quite frankly if you think I am, you're part of the problem."

I toss the broken pen into the trash can and face him from across the room. "Are you being serious right now? So I'm the problem?"

"If you're defending him then yes."

"I don't get your logic behind this..."

"You don't have to, all you have to know is that I don't like you being around him. Your better off not interacting with him at all."

"Look, he's just interested in my baking-we're just friends that don't even see eachother often, there's really nothing to-"

"That's how I fell in love with you!"

He turns around and finally looks me in the eye with his desperate looking ones. They looked blue in every sense of the word. The color, and the feeling.

Taken back by his bold words, I take a step back from the intensity of it all.

"That's how we fell in love. I was interested in your baking, we became friends, and then it took off from there."

He wasn't wrong.

But he wasn't right either.

"You don't get it do you...?" I look away from his strong gaze. "I fell in love with you, because it's you.

At this point, I felt the lump in my throat getting to me, and I rushed my way out of the room as quickly as I could.

I couldn't let him see me cry.

"Did I fall in love too fast?" I whispered to myself, remembering my friends earlier words that were only meant to amuse me. My mind was poisoning itself, and I didn't know what to do about. The more I wanted to stop thinking about it, the more I confused thoughts.

I looked down at my hands as I walked into the foyer of the palace. They were stained with the black ink from my broken pen. It looked like a mess...I looked like a mess.

Everything's a mess.

"Wait-!" Behind me, Hayden came after me, he paced up to me and grabbed my ink stained hand into his without batting an eyelash. "Wait..."

"You don't have to worry...because you're the one that I'm in love with." I muster up the courage to say to bring my mind out of its negative thinking.

It was true, so what if we had fallen in love too fast? It didn't matter when we said it, all we know is that it still held up to be true, and until it doesn't, it shouldn't have to matter.

Hayden held my hands in his, as if accepting this messy part of ourselves.

"I'm sorry."

He takes my hands up to his lips to kiss them. "I'm sorry, please forgive me..." He repeats again.

The tears threaten to well up again. "Of course I forgive you...it's the only thing I can do."
