•6-Finding Five•

After getting a bowl of water and a cloth from Allison, Margot went back to the sitting room and joined Diego on the couch, resting the bowl on her lap. "Can I help clean that up?" she asked softly as her eyes darted to the cut just beside his eyes. He silently nodded. "Those people, why were they here?" she asked as she dipped the cloth in the water before carefully dapping it at Diego's cut.

"The boy they want...that's Five," he mumbled softly, eyes squinting as he flinched away a little when she pressed the cloth against his cut. She shot him a look that silently told him to not be such a baby.

"Five?" She questioned and Diego nodded in confirmation. Her eyebrows furrowed and her head tilted to the side. "How's twenty-nine a boy?" she asked in confusion as she continued cleaning Diego's cut.

He grunted softly as he shook his head. "No, when coming back to this timeline he messed something up. He looks like the day he disappeared," he explained, and Margot halted for a second as she looked at him.

She decided she didn't know enough about time travel to question it and cleared her throat. "So those people were the same ones from the department store," she commented as she quirked an eyebrow.

Diego grunted in agreement as he nodded his head. "And at the donut shop, the waitress saw a boy and an old man before a bunch of guys shot the place and each other up," he muttered. "Day later, the old man's dead too, but the boy's MIA."

"You think that was Five too?" she asked him as she put the bowl and cloth down by her feet and turned her full attention to Diego.

"Yeah," he confirmed as he threw his head back against the back of the couch. "Where the hell he is now or why those people want him, I don't know." he sighed deeply as he slowly shook his head.

Margot silently stared at him for a moment before reaching out and placing a hand on his shoulder. "We'll find him, we'll figure this out," she assured as she nodded her head.

Diego's head lulled to the side, his eyes landing on Margot as he raised his eyebrows. "We?" he repeated softly.

She smiled softly as she nodded her head in confirmation. "I already told you I was in." she reminded him, giving his shoulder a soft squeeze before her hand dropped to her lap.

Diego let out a raspy hum as he looked at her. "Yeah that was before two psychopaths shot at us," he replied as he quirked his eyebrow at her.

She gave him a small smile as she slowly shook her head. "I'm not abandoning you again," she told him softly.

Diego silently stared at her for a moment before reaching out and tugging a strand of hair behind her ear. "You've never abandoned me," he told her, brushing a finger underneath her chin before cupping her cheek. "You've always come running when I needed your help," he said as he slowly nodded his head. "I wish I had been there for you too."

"Well, I don't get in nearly as much trouble as you." She teased softly, giving him a crooked smile as she shook her head at him.

Diego hummed and rolled his eyes at her. "Little goody two shoes." he mocked her playfully and she laughed softly as she pushed his hand away.

The next afternoon, when Margot arrived home after her shift at the vet, she found Diego's car in her driveway and Diego sitting on the steps of her front porch. She couldn't help but smile a little as she climbed out of the car, slinging her bag over her shoulder before approaching Diego.

He stood up, stretching out his back as he offered her a smile. "Hey partner." he greeted her with a nod. His eyes briefly flicked to the bruise on her forehead and he felt a twist in his gut. He'd never liked seeing her like that. He even hated if she bumped into something and got a bruise on her leg.

"What's on the agenda today?" Margot asked him as she crossed her arms over her chest. She was oblivious to how utterly upset he was to see that bruise on her forehead again. "Mass murder? Robbery?" she suggested as she raised her eyebrows.

Diego gave her a light-hearted roll of his eyes. "Finding Five," he replied before nodding his head in the direction of his car. "Come on, let's go see if we find anything in his room," he told her as he started walking in the direction of his car.

"Oh yay, looking through a thirteen-year-old boy's room." Margot mockingly cheered as she turned and followed after Diego. He gave her an amused smile, humming as he opened the passenger side door for her.

They went down to the academy house and Margot followed Diego through the house. For a second Diego's footsteps faltered when they heard someone rummaging through Five's bedroom.

He walked into the room, looking at Pogo and then at Luther who was rummaging through a desk drawer. "What are you doing here?" Diego asked his brother as he stepped further into the room while Margot remained by the door.

Luther stared at Diego over his shoulder, remaining silent for a second before he stood up straight. "Uh...Do you know about Mom?" he questioned softly.

Diego lowered his head, sending a subtle side-eyed glance in Margot's direction. He turned back to his brother. "Well, It looks like you got what you wanted, one way or another, right?" he said as he nodded his head.

Margot's eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Diego. She was unaware he didn't tell his siblings about what he had done. But she remained silent. She wasn't going to out him if he didn't want his family to know. It was not her place.

Luther shared a frustrated look with Pogo before looking back at Diego. "Wanna tell me what you're doing here?" he questioned.

"Looking for Five," Diego replied as his gaze drifted around Five's untouched bedroom.

Luther returned to the desk, looking through the books and files. "Let me guess, you're gonna save the day," he commented sarcastically as he looked at Diego over his shoulder.

"It's what I do," Diego replied, rolling his eyes before turning to the door. "Asshole," he muttered under his breath before placing a hand on Margot's back to steer her out of the bedroom.

"Really? Last I checked, you mopped floors." Luther replied and Diego's steps halted. Margot's face fell as she glanced at Diego before looking at Luther, a frown tugging at her lips. Even Pogo's face fell at Luther's low blow.

Diego's hand dropped from Margot's back and slowly turned to face Luther. "And what do you do? Sit on the moon for four years, waiting for orders?" he questioned as he stepped back further into the room again.

"Boys," Pogo spoke up as he looked between the two of them. "This won't help us find Five," he said, pressing both hands on his cane to support him.

"Keep on being a loyal soldier after everything our father did to you." Diego continued like Pogo hadn't even spoken.

"What? You mean save my life?" Luther questioned as he stepped closer to Diego, eyebrows furrowing.

Margot looked between the two of them before looking at Pogo. The Chimp gave her a look that almost looked apologetic. He knew what was coming and he was sorry that Margot would have to hear it and stand witness to a Hargreeves sibling argument.

"No, I mean..." Diego spoke as he leaned with his shoulder against Five's closet. "Turn you into a monster." he finished his thought and Luther's fist slammed through the closet door. Margot flinched, eyes widening. "Can't hide it anymore, champ." Diego taunted as he smirked.

Luther pulled his fist out of the hole he had created in the closet door, glaring down at Diego. "He had a difficult decision to make, and he made it," he replied sharply.

Diego shook his head, still smirking like he found his brother's anger amusing. "Grow up, Luther. We're not 13 anymore," he replied.

"That's what leaders do, by the way." Luther snapped as he continued to glare down at his brother.

"He sent you on that mission all alone. Almost got you killed." Diego replied in a low voice as he slowly shook his head.

"Yeah, well at least he was there." Luther snapped at his brother. "Where were you? You and everyone else in this family?" he questioned as he raised his eyebrows at Diego. "You walked out," he said firmly.

"And thank Christ that I did, or I would have ended up just like you." Diego snapped at Luther as he pointed at him, letting his eyes drift over Luther's larger body to emphasize what he meant. Luther swallowed back the lump forming in his throat and shook his head. Diego pushed away from the closet and stepped closer to Luther. "Let me ask you a question. When you watch one of these nature shows..."

"Diego, please." Pogo quickly cut Diego off. Margot tensed. She didn't know where Diego was going with this but the mention of nature shows told her that it wasn't going anywhere good.

" ...does it turn you on?" Diego asked as his eyebrows furrowed. He spoke over Pogo like he didn't even note that he had said something.

"Boys a lady is present." Pogo snapped at them, and Diego tensed up as he gave a slight look over his shoulder at Margot, like he only now remembered she was also there in the room. He realized she saw and heard him being an asshole and dread filled him. What was she thinking of him now?

"So what? Is he just an animal to you, too now, Diego, huh?" Luther questioned his brother sharply as he pointed back at Pogo.

"Don't," Diego warned in a low voice as he shook his head and gave Luther a side-eye.

"Enough!" Pogo yelled and both men went silent. "This house was attacked. We barely got out with our lives. And Grace... she wasn't so lucky." he told them as both looked towards him with shameful looks on their faces. "Your brother is missing, and this is how you rise to the occasion?" he questioned and neither replied. "Take your nonsense elsewhere. Now," he demanded.

"Sorry, Pogo." Luther apologized.

"Yeah, sorry, Pogo." Diego apologized before turning around and walking out of the bedroom, followed by Luther and then Margot.
