•32 - Zero for two•
Margot and Diego went together to meet with Reginald Hargreeves. As they entered the quiet and mostly abandoned building, neither was sure if the rest of the Hargreeves siblings were going to show up for this light supper.
As they stepped into the elevator, Margot could tell Diego was nervous and she reached out, taking his hand into her own, giving him an assuring squeeze. He looked down at Margot, squeezing her hand back.
"Wait up," Vanya called out as she rushed towards the elevator as it was closing. Diego reached his free hand in between the sliding doors and they slid back open as Vanya slid inside, sharing a look with Margot and Diego.
"Hold it," Allison called out as she and Klaus approached and Vanya held the door open for them.
"Hey, everyone." Klaus greeted with a slight slur as he and Allison slipped into the elevator.
Luther was the next to join them, awkwardly squeezing his way into the elevator. "Excuse me," he mumbled as he shifted, forcing everyone to stand against the walls of the elevator to make space for him.
Five was the last to join them, pressing the button for the top floor before he looked around at everyone. "Good. We're all here," he commented as he shoved his hands into his pockets.
The doors closed and the elevator began to slowly move up. Everyone was completely silent as they stood in the small elevator. Just as they were reaching the top floor, Luther shifted uncomfortably and a foul smell spread through the small space.
Everyone groaned and gagged, plugging their noses as they turned to Luther who looked shameful and guilty. "Luther!" Allison complained as her nose scrunched up.
"Sorry, I'm nervous." he apologized shamefully as he looked at them.
When the doors opened, everyone rushed to get out of the elevator, coughing and waving their hands in front of their noses. Margot scowled, cursing Luther for all those bowls of scrambled eggs he had been eating.
Together, they made their way into a Hawain-themed restaurant that was completely empty. They wandered inside, looking around. There was already a large table in the middle set up for them, with drinks already poured and bowls of fruits waiting.
"All right, when Dad gets here, I'll do the talking, okay?" Five told everyone as he walked ahead, going straight to the table.
"Got a few questions for him myself," Diego argued as he followed after Five with Margot right beside him.
"Hey, we don't wanna scare him off. He might be able to help us stop doomsday,
get us home." Five argued as he glared at Diego with a deep frown on his lips.
"No, we need to figure out why he's planning to kill the president," Diego argued right back and Margot couldn't help but lightly roll her eyes at Diego as she sat down at the table. She grabbed one of the cocktails and sipped on it while twisting the little umbrella.
"This is a matter of life and death, you imbecile." Five snapped at Diego as his frown deepened.
"Okay, yeah, maybe we should take turns talking. Yeah?" Vanya suggested as she looked around at everyone. She glanced around and saw a brown conch shell on a nearby table. She grabbed it and turned back to everyone else. £Here, whoever has got this conch shell gets to talk."
"Vanya, we don't have time for a debate, okay?" Five argued as he shook his head at his sister.
"Maybe I should lead. We all know I'm a better public speaker than the rest." Allison suggested as she held her head high and smug, taking the conch shell from Vanya.
"Okay, Daddy's girl," Diego commented in a snarky tone as he rolled his eyes.
Allison turned to Diego, her eyes narrowing at him. "Oh, jealous, Number Two?" she questioned as she quirked an eyebrow.
"Hey, no more numbers. No more bullshit." Diego replied sharply as he approached Allison. "We're Team Zero. We're all Team Zero." he insisted and Allison looked like she wanted to laugh.
"Uh, Diego. You don't have the conch." Luther spoke up as he pointed between Diego and the conch that Allison was still holding.
Diego held up a finger and gave Luther a petty little smile. He grabbed the conch shell from Allison and hurled it towards a wall, shattering it. "Classic," Allison commented before taking a seat at the table.
A door opened and Sir Reginald Hargreeves walked into the room with a file and a book tucked underneath his arm. He walked silently towards the table and everyone tensed as they stared at him. When he sat down, those who remained standing found their seats, except for Klaus.
"Not only have you burglarized my lab, set my chimp loose, conned your way into the Mexican consulate, repeatedly stalked and attacked me, but you have, on numerous occasions, called me..." Reginald went on a fierce rant as he looked around at everyone, pulling a pen out of his pocket.
"Hey, Pop. How's it hangin'?" Klaus interrupted in a drunken slur as he plopped himself down in a chair beside Reginald.
"Dad." Reginald finished in a tense voice as his brows furrowed. "My reconnaissance tells me you're not CIA, not KGB, certainly not MI5," he listed off as he continued to look between them. "So... who are you?" he questioned.
Everyone shared silent looks with each other. They opened their mouths to answer but none did. Five cleared his throat and looked at Reginald. "We're your children," he informed.
"Oh except me." Margot piped up as she raised her hand into the air and Reginald raised his eyebrows. "I am here completely against my will," she replied with a petty smile as she sipped on her cocktail. Reginald gave her an offended look for her comment.
"We're from the future." Five spoke up, taking over the conversation again. "In 1989, you adopted us all and trained us to fight against the end of the world. Called us the Umbrella Academy," he explained and Klaus raised a martini glass in a cheers motion.
Reginald frowned again as his brows furrowed. "Why on earth would I adopt six..." he began to question but was cut off.
"Seven." Allison corrected as she folded her hands together on top of the table. "One of us isn't here," she explained.
"Dead. One of us is dead." Diego corrected while his eyes shot towards Reginald with resentment in them.
"Yeah, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba." Klaus mumbled in irritation as he turned in his seat and looked at the empty space behind him. "Enough of that now." he snapped, and everyone looked at him with confusion. Klaus turned back around to see Reginald staring at him with furrowed eyebrows, and he made a motion for Reginald to continue.
"Regardless, what would possess me to adopt seven ill-mannered malcontents?" Reginald questioned as he looked between those who claimed to be his children.
"We all have special abilities." Five replied, motioning towards Margot to emphasize that not only Reginald's children had these special abilities.
"Special? In what sense?" Reginald asked curiously.
"In the superpower sense," Luther replied, pursing his lips with a tight smile as he nodded his head.
"Call me old-fashioned, but I'm a stickler for a pesky little thing called evidence. Show me." Reginald demanded as he looked between them.
"Everybody wants to see powers all of a sudden," Allison muttered sarcastically with a scoff as she fiddled with the straw in her cocktail.
"We're not circus animals, okay?" Luther muttered as he looked at Reginald with a frown. "We're not gonna bounce balls on our noses and clap our hands like seals for your amusement," he said as he sarcastically clapped his hands.
His words barely left his mouth when Diego pulled out a knife and without looking, he threw it past Reginald. It curved around the older man and hit a wooden post at the back of the room. Reginald looked at Diego with furrowed eyebrows before opening his journal and writing.
Everyone stared at him with confusion as they leaned in. "What are you writing?" Diego questioned as his eyebrows furrowed.
Reginald looked up, sending Diego a sharp look. "You are zero for two, young man." He informed in a sharp tone and Allison snorted in amusement.
Diego's face scrunched up in anger and he shot up to his feet, making his chair screech with the force of his actions. Five zapped in front of Diego and placed a firm hand on his brother's chest. "Stop!" he whispered firmly.
"Now that is interesting," Reginald commented as he looked at Five.
Margot reached out and took Diego's hand, tugging him back into his seat and he complied without a word as he sat down beside her. Five cleared his throat and turned to Reginald. "All right, uh, quick rundown," he said as he returned to his chair. "Luther: super strength. Klaus can commune with the dead. Margot has electricity running through her veins. Allison can rumor anyone to do anything." he listed as he pointed them out.
"Except she never uses it," Diego commented dryly.
Allison pursed her lips and stared at Diego, making intense eye contact. "I heard a rumor you punched yourself in the face," she spoke.
Diego's eyes went a silver color before he lifted his fist and punched himself in the face. "Aah!" he cried out in pain as he covered his face with his hands. "Damn it!" he groaned as he lowered his head and Margot placed her hand on his back.
Reginald turned to Vanya who had kept quiet the entire time. "And you?" he questioned as he raised his eyebrows.
"Uh, maybe we don't take Vanya for a test run," Luther suggested as he reached out and patted Vanya's arm, giving a tight-lipped smile.
"Oh, yeah, that's probably not a good idea." Klaus agreed as he sipped on his martini.
"It's fine." Vanya insisted as she shrugged her shoulders. "I can handle it." She assured everyone as she grabbed a fork from the table.
"Handle it?" Allison asked sarcastically as she raised her eyebrows. "Last time you handled it, you definitely blew up the moon." She reminded as she gave Vanya a tight-lipped smile.
"No, Vanya, don't!" Five yelled as he held his hands out to stop Vanya when she turned her focus to the cocktail glass in front of her.
Everyone except Reginald grew very concerned very fast, holding their hands out to stop Vanya as she focused and tapped the fork against her glass. A high-pitched tone erupted from the glass, sending energy waves across the table.
The fruit bowl in the middle burst when the energy waves crossed over it, sending fruits flying everywhere. Margo flinched as the tiny bits of fruit hit her and her mouth fell open, looking down at the pieces of pineapple stuck in her hair.
Everyone else had been hit with fruit bits as well and Reginald looked less than pleased as he pulled out a handkerchief and wiped down his face.
"This is my favorite shirt," Klaus complained as he picked fruit bits off his shirt.
"Oops," Vanya mumbled softly, an unapologetic smile on her lips.
"That was impressive," Luther commented and Margot hummed in agreement as she picked a piece of pineapple from her shirt, popping it into her mouth.
