Ch11
Third Person's POV
Because Our heroes arrived to the Oreburgh Gym just after Paul did, Ash and Volo waited for their turn to challenge Roark the Oreburgh Gym Leader by watching Paul's challenge first. what our heroes witnessed is Paul using his Pokémon in a unusually creative way without concern for their types and managing to gain the convened Coal Badge as a result. But now the curtain's about to come up on Ash and Volo's first Sinnoh Gym Battle Challenge.
"Aren't you gonna stay and watch my battle?" Ash asked. Paul just stared hard, thinking for a moment.
"Ash..." Volo whispers sounding concern.
There was silence in the air before Paul smirks as Ash ran over, now irritated. "What's so funny?!" Ash demands.
Volo sighs placing a hand on Ash's shoulder "Leave the heat to me, Ash"
"You want me to watch you lose?" Paul asked looking at Ash.
"Alright! Time out!" Dawn said as she got in between them with Pikachu and Vanilla to copy then the three of them looked at Paul as Dawn said "You've already battled Ash once, why not stay and watch?" she kindly offers.
Paul stared at her for a moment. Dawn got a little uncomfortable. "What...what's wrong?" She asked.
"What's wrong? Do I know you?" Paul asked.
Dawn looked as she was going to burst with pure rage. "Excuse me your rudeness, but we met once before, the name's Dawn!" Dawn shouts.
Volo remembers 'Oh I think we're in the episode where Ash loses to Roark' he thinks before looking at Brock and Gary "Brock, Gary" he calls which the mentioned look at Volo "you better hold Dawn back because this is about to get ugly" he warns them pointing at the enraged Dawn.
"Don't remember." Paul replied, feeling dull at the very moment.
That's when Dawn has turn red, steaming with anger! "You think you're funny, don't cha?! LISTEN MISTER! YOU NASTY SPOLIED BRAT! APOLOGIZE RIGHT NOW!" Dawn bellowed as both Gary and Brock quickly grab her under the arms.
"Dawn, no! He's not worth it!" Volo yells out, standing between her and Paul trying to get her to calm down as Pikachu watches them.
"You're welcome to stay." Roark assures
"With that enthusiasm, how could I refuse?" Paul smirks.
"Good! and I'm gonna show you a battle with a whole new battle!" Ash exclaims before turning to Roark. "Whenever you're ready, Roark! I'm ready!" Ash calls.
"Ash, would you mind terribly if we had our battle tomorrow?" Roark asked as Ash was confused. "You know, my Pokémon and I just went through a serious battling and to tell you the truth, we're exhausted." He explains.
"I hear ya. Hey, tomorrow will be just fine!" Ash agrees with a smile.
"Great! Thank you, Ash!" Roark thanks him, smiling.
Then Ash glares at Paul who just smirked but the smirk rapidly fade when he sees Volo frowning at him, not mad at the fullest but it made the atmosphere tense enough for everyone in the room feel a shiver up their spine.
-scene change-
Meanwhile, with the heroes, they were at the Pokémon Center, there was a loud beep was heard meaning the Pokémon were healed and Paul had taken the two Pokeballs before walking away then he heard noises and looked over to see Ash and his friends looking at Ash's Pokémon as they shouted for Ash, wanted to be in the Gym Battle.
"Okay, I know you all wanted to get out of this place as soon as you can, but I can only pick three!" Ash explains trying to calm them down.
"Try to understand that out of all of you the only Pokémon good for battling a Rock Type is Turtwig, who is a Grass type." Brock points out and
Turtwig had stepped up "Turtwig!" the Grass Type Pokémon cries nodding in acceptance.
"I'll be counting on you and your Razor Leaf, Turtwig!" Ash said, smiling
"Turt!" Turtwig replies happily.
"Of course it is true that Aipom's Focus Punch is really powerful too." Ash adds looking at the Long Tail Pokémon.
"Aipom!" Aipom jumps out of joy happy to be picked.
Then Ash Looks at his Partner "Not to mention your Iron Tail, Pikachu which is totally awesome!" he said.
"Pika!" Pikachu cheered.
"So that means I get to pick all of three of you!" Ash said to which Pikachu, Turtwig and Aipom cheered that they got picked.
"Staravia!" Staravia lets out a gasped chirp and upset that it got left out.
"Aw~ poor Staravia." Dawn speaks, feeling sorry for the Bird Pokémon due to not being picked by Ash.
"Staravia really loves to battle, alright." Brock chuckles nervously.
Gary sweat drops "You don't say" he responds
Staravia had went to a corner, deeply depressed about this, as Ash came over to it. "Man, I'm sorry, Staravia. But I promise, you'll go the next time." He assured.
"Staravia" Staravia lets out a sad chirp as the others came right over.
"A promise is a promise, don't worry!" Dawn assures.
"And that's when Dawn's mom says she worries the most." Ash laughed.
"What did you say?!" Dawn snaps in question glaring at Ash.
"Calm down." Brock told her before looking at Ash.
"One thing I learned from watching Paul's Battle with Roark is that Paul's speed making up a huge part of his secret to his victory" He explains.
"Of course, his moves was important, too. But I think that his amazing speed climbed him over the top" Gary adds.
Ash crossed his arms and started to think about that. "So do I. The thing is... what are we supposed to do?" He wondered.
"Now that should be a no brainer, just imitate me." Paul said, smirking as he came over, his hands in his pockets and that caused the group to look at him.
Paul then noticed Volo standing in front of him "and why should Ash be a cold-hearted trainer like you?" the blonde demands, glaring at Paul.
"Besides, I never do like you do! I wouldn't force Chimchar to battle the way you did for a million bucks!" Ash exclaims also glaring at him.
Paul can only scoff at that then a little boy had came over to look at Paul. "Hey, wow!" He said, amazed as Paul and the others looked at him. "Thanks a lot for the Azumarill, mister! We'll train real hard! So see ya!" The little boy said as he ran off, with Paul waving at him.
"So you gave him the Azumarill, huh?" Volo questions
"Yeah, so?" Paul asks.
"Because it lost?!" Ash shouts.
"That's as good as that Azumarill's going to get." Paul responds.
"Ash, you're going to cause a scene here, calm down" Volo emotionlessly says to Ash but the Kantonian ignores him.
"I thought it was your friend! You could have kept training, you know!" Ash explained.
"No, that one was a lost cause." Paul explains.
"I don't get you!" Ash exclaims.
"Ash" Volo warns.
"And I thought you wanted to win!" Paul said.
"I do!" Ash answers. "But not the way you go out and doing it!" he states.
Paul can only scoff as he walks away with Ash and Volo glaring at him. "He'll never beat me, again..." Volo hears Ash speaking to himself before he then looks at his Pokémon. "Alright, let's show that Paul that there are other ways to battle than to the way he does it!" He exclaims.
Dawn had sighed, not liking the situation. "What's wrong, Dawn?" Brock asked, looking at her.
"I guess...there are just different kinds of trainers, and I just wonder what Chimchar and Elekid think of Paul..." Dawn explained.
Gary thought "I get you, perfectly" he agrees.
Volo clenches his fist thinking of a strategy and who should he pick for when is his turn to battle.
-time skip-
The next morning was the day of Ash and Volo's first Gym battle as everyone had came as Volo decides to let Ash battle first since he himself haven't decided on who should be battling Roark. Volo, Gary, Dawn, and Brock were in the sideline with Petilil on Volo's lap and Paul was also in the sideline watching and looks curious at Petilil.
Roark was on corner and Ash in the other. "I trust you have a good night sleep and ready to go?" Roark asks.
"Yeah!" Ash replied
"Pika!" Pikachu agreed
"Good! My Pokémon did too and are in tip top shape! So feel free to give it all you got!" Roark said.
"Great!" Ash replies then glanced at Paul. "Get a load of this, Paul. Some real battle." He mumbled but Paul can only watch and scoff.
"Ash focus at the Battle in front of you!" Volo states.
"The Gym battle between Ash the challenger and Roark, the Gym Leader is about to begin." Ian announces "Each side will have a use of three Pokémon, and the battle is over when all three of each side's Pokémon is unable to battle! In addition, only the challenger will substitution any Pokémon." Ian explains the rules.
"Ash's first Sinnoh Gym Battle is here." Brock said, smiling.
"Mm! I can't wait!" Dawn squealed in excitement.
"Petilil, let's watch the battle closely, okay?" he said to the Bud Pokémon unaware that Paul's staring at him.
"Petilil!" Petilil cries happily.
"Let the battle begin!" Ian announced.
"Cranidos, let's go!" Roark calls.
The Headbutt Pokémon appeared, glaring at Ash for an opponent.
"Why's he doing that?" Ash asked, startled to see Cranidos being sent out first.
"Pika?" Pikachu asks looking as confused as its trainer.
"I was so sure Roark was going to save Cranidos for last but instead he's starting with it!" Dawn states out of shock.
"By switching up the order of his Pokémon Roark's testing Ash's reaction to surprise situations. It's a common technique in these kinds of matches." Brock explains.
"Wow, hope Ash's okay." Dawn said.
Paul just snorted, staring at Ash. "I don't care anyway! Roark's got Rock Types Pokémon! I'll just take them down one at a time! But I still need to deal with Cranidos' speed and that headbutt!" Ash exclaimed.
"And which Pokémon have you chosen?" Roark asked, feeling confident.
"Okay, Aipom! I choose you!" Ash called, sending his Normal Type Pokémon out to the rocky battlefield.
"Here we go, Aipom! I'm counting on you to confuse Cranidos with your quick moves! Aipom, use Focus Punch, now!" Ash yelled.
"Headbutt!" Roark called. Both Pokémon made their moves, with Aipom leaping in the air for the focused Attack and for Cranidos to go charging at her.
"A good move for Ash! He got Aipom up in the air, right off the bat!" Brock explains.
Gary nods "That gives it the advantage while Cranidos stuck on the ground" he adds.
"Do it!" Ash called. Aipom prepared to use Focus Punch, aiming it towards Cranidos
All of a sudden, Cranidos leaped toward the air and bashed into Aipom
"Oh no!" Ash gasped as Aipom looks shocked.
The Focus Punch was gone, out of focus once Cranidos bashed against Aipom. Aipom landed, falling on the ground, hard
"I knew Cranidos has great speed, but I have no idea it could jump up like that, too!" Dawn gasped.
"And that means it's gonna be a tough battle whether they are on the ground or not." Brock explains, frowning.
Volo looks at the battle focus as Paul stares at Ash thinking.
"Aipom, get up!" Ash called as Aipom quickly got up, getting ready to attack.
"Cranidos, use Flamethrower, now!" Roark yelled. Cranidos shot a hot fire towards Aipom.
"Double Team!" Ash called. Aipom made clones of itself, but the Flamethrower destroyed all of them "Quick Aipom, use Swift!" Ash yelled as Aipom destroyed Flamethrower with Swift.
"Dodge it!" Roark called.
Cranidos dodged the stars and skidded back to Roark as Aipom skidded back to Ash.
"Focus Punch!" Ash shouted. Aipom aimed the move once again, to Cranidos
"Zen Headbutt!" Roark called. Cranidos slammed into the Focus Punch with the powerful physical attack, creating an explosion! Cranidos skidded back again, with Aipom sent flying to Ash! Ash gasped as he caught Aipom, having the Long Tail Pokémon to be knocked out.
"Aipom is unable to battle! Cranidos wins it!" Ian announces as Cranidos roars in victory.
"You were awesome, Aipom! Now, take a good long rest." Ash said, returning the Normal Type to its Pokéball.
"Aipom battled hard." Dawn said, with a sad look.
"At least it gave Ash the opportunity to check out the way Cranidos moved. Which you can be sure that he will be remembering, here on out" Brock replies as Gary nods agreeing with him.
Paul only snorted with an insulting grin and Volo glares at him for that.
Dawn notices "Volo, just ignore him." She said.
Volo grunts 'I know I should've ignored him, I just forgot that Paul can be This rude' he thinks looking back at the battle
"So, Ash. Have you decided on your next Pokemon?" Roark asked.
"Kay, Pikachu, you're up!" Ash calls looking at his partner.
Pikachu nodded and leapt toward the battlefield, charging up electricity, while glaring at Cranidos.
Paul looked back, a little surprised with the choice of Pikachu.
"Let's show 'em, Pikachu! Use Thunderbolt, now!" Ash shouted as Pikachu let out of bolt of lightning towards Cranidos!
"Dodge, then Zen Headbutt!" Roark called. Cranidos easily dodged the Thunderbolt and charged the Psychic Type move towards Pikachu
"Oh no! Aipom's Focus Punch should've worn Cranidos down!" Brock gasps out of panic.
"This is bad for Both Ash and Pikachu!" Gary adds.
Pikachu grew startled to see Cranidos coming so fast "Here it comes! Iron Tail, let's go!" Ash yells.
Pikachu waited for the right moment to attack and struck Cranidos on the head, sending flying towards a rock.
"Alright!" Ash exclaimed.
"Bullseye!" Dawn exclaimed.
"Right on the mark!" Gary cheered.
"That did the trick!" Brock exclaims as Paul watches closely.
Volo also watches closely while holding Petilil close to him
"Excellent! A well-done place hit! Cranidos, Headbutt!" Roark called. Cranidos made a run towards Pikachu again
"Dodge, then use Thunderbolt!" Ash called.
Pikachu tries to use Thunderbolt by jumping, but Cranidos also jump and bashes into Pikachu. Pikachu gets sent flying towards the air.
"You can do it, Pikachu! Use Thunderbolt!" Ash calls as Pikachu tries it again.
"Zen Headbutt, quick!" Roark called. Cranidos rapidly bashed into Pikachu once again
"Whoa! That Cranidos is so fast, it beat us to the punch!" Ash gasped.
"Ash, Focus!!" Volo shouts as he sweat drops.
"Now use Headbutt!" Roark calls.
"Pikachu dodge it!" Ash shouts but Cranidos had bashed Pikachu to the ground, not giving the chance for Pikachu to dodge
"Pikachu, no! Those attacks; Headbutt, Zen Headbutt! Man, how are we supposed to deal with those?" Ash growled.
"Cranidos is so fast!" Dawn exclaims
"This is tough! Cranidos' speed along with the power of those Headbutt attacks are keeping Pikachu from doing much of anything!" Brock explains.
"If Ash doesn't come up with something fast, then Pikachu's gonna be knocked out by the time he takes on the next Pokémon!" Gary exclaims, getting a bit irritated.
"C'mon, Pikachu, I know you can do it, but you've just got to hang in there!" Ash cried. Pikachu struggled to get up but failed.
Dawn noticed that Paul is leaving. "Paul is leaving?" She asks as Volo noticed that even Ash.
"What the?" Ash questions.
"Whoever leaves is a Pussy!" Volo yells hat made Paul stop moving.
Pikachu let out a big growl as Paul turns to see Pikachu using Thunderbolt, unlike anything he has ever seen before as it fires it up in the sky.
"Pikachu..." Ash said surprised.
Paul grew a little amazed as he sat back down to keep watching.
Volo smirks "Ah, he's back as expected " Volo said to himself.
"Okay, Pikachu, let's show them, they'll never forget!" Ash exclaims.
"Pika!" Pikachu understands.
"Use Quick Attack, Let's go!" Ash calls.
Pikachu dashed to attack Cranidos! "Pikachu is fast. But if you mustn't forget that using Normal attack moves won't do much at all on Cranidos! Use Flamethrower!" Roark calls as Cranidos shot hot flames towards Pikachu.
"Dodge and use Iron Tail!" Ash calls.
Pikachu jumped over the Flamethrower, much to Cranidos' shock.
"See that?" Dawn gasps in question.
"That was so fast!" Roark gasps
"Do it!" Ash shouts and Pikachu used Iron Tail on Cranidos, sending it flying towards the air.
"Perfect!" Dawn exclaimed. "Using the Quick Attack for speed and Iron Tail was great thinking!" Brock commented.
Gary smirks proudly "You can thank Umbreon for it" he said as Both Brock and Dawn looks at the Brunette, while you were asleep Ash, and I stayed up for a half a hour mastering the Iron Tail, Quick Attack combo, and that trick pull off" he explains
Suddenly, as Cranidos landed, it stood up fast again!
"That should've put Cranidos away! But Cranidos is just standing there!" Ash gasped.
Volo frowns 'Here comes Head Smash' he thought.
"I'd liked the way you combined your moves, but now I want you to watch this! Cranidos, Head Smash!" Roark called. Just like that, Cranidos had blue aura surrounded him, creating a new move.
"Uh oh." Ash gasped, not liking what he is seeing.
"So, Roark did learn that move after all..." Paul whispers.
"That new to me!" Dawn comments looking at Brock and Gary who look back at the female.
"Head Smash. Of all the Headbutt moves in Cranidos' arsenals, Head Smash is by far the strongest and most dangerous move as well. Of course they're all powerful but Head Smash cause recoil damage, too. " Brock explains.
"If you're going for it, then we will! Pikachu, Volt tackle, now!" Ash smirks as Pikachu began to use his risky move as well.
"Volt Tackle?! But Ash knows that it could possibly hurting Pikachu!" Dawn gasps.
"Pathetic strategy." Paul mutters which Volo hears him as he frowns
Both Pikachu and Cranidos charged, using their powerful moves, smashing against each other and creating an explosion! Both Pokémon skidded back to their respective trainers.
"Pikachu!" Ash calls.
"Cranidos, no!" Roark calls as Paul continued to watch the battle before him.
Ash then notices that Cranidos' still standing "Cranidos is still standing!?" Ash gasped.
"As is Pikachu, too! You've raised your Pokémon well!" Roark chuckled.
"Pikachu, it's too dangerous for you to go on, so come back!" Ash calls back as Pikachu looked at him before running back to his side.
"I can't wait to see your team. So, who be your next Pokemon?" Roark asks.
"Turtwig, I choose you!" Ash calls out.
"Turtwig!" The Grass Type Pokémon appears from its Pokéball, ready to battle.
"A Turtwig? That should really advantage with a Rock Type Gym!" Roark complimented as Cranidos got ready to battle again.
"Razor Leaf, Turtwig!" Ash commands.
Turtwig shot some Razor Leaf at Cranidos but Roark intervenes.
"Flamethrower, now!" Roark calls as Cranidos let out a stream of fire, having the hot flames burn the leaves then headed straight for Turtwig
"Dodge then use Bite, Turtwig!" Ash calls.
Turtwig ducks under Flamethrower and charged at the Headbutt Pokémon
"Oh my, that might be the fastest Turtwig I ever seen!" Roark gasps out of amazement.
"I hate to admit it, but Turtwig's speed really improved." Paul mutters which Volo smirks at that.
"Zen Headbutt, Cranidos!" Roark cals.
Cranidos allowed Turtwig to use Bite on him and smashed Turtwig to the ground as Ash to gasps at this.
"I can't believe that after all this time, Cranidos can still be battling like that!" Brock exclaims.
"Use Flamethrower!" Roark called. The hot flames burned Turtwig through
"A Grass Type like Turtwig is weak against Fire Type attack and can really get hurt!" Gary exclaims.
"Turtwig, stay strong!" Dawn called.
"Razor Leaf!" Ash shouted. After enduring the Fire Type move, Turtwig knocked Cranidos down with a Razor Leaf attack! Cranidos had gotten knocked out.
"Cranidos is unable to battle! Turtwig is the winner!" Ian announces.
Turtwig lands with its backside facing Ash ""Way to go, Turtwig!" Ash compliments.
"Wow, Turtwig is awesome!" Dawn squealed with delight.
"Don't forget, Roark has two Pokémon that he hasn't brought out, yet." Brock reminds. That brought Dawn down for a bit
"Way to bring that down, Brock." Volo pouts and Brock smiles nervously.
"Cranidos, Rock solid." Roark compliments as he calls back his Pokémon to the Pokeball. "You toughed it out." He said, smiling before switching to Onix's Pokeball.
"Whoa, that's over with. We went through way too much to defeat just one Pokémon." Ash mumbled.
"Pika pi!" Pikachu cries out as Ash looked at him confused. "Pikachu!" Pikachu cries out, not wanted him to give up.
"Turtwig!" Turtwig agrees.
Volo smiles but then looks down in sadness knowing what's about to happen next Petilil looks up at its trainer with concern.
Volo notices "Oh, I'm fine, just remembering old memories that I rather forget" he assures the Bud Pokémon unknowingly that a concerned Gary, Brock and a confused Paul look at the blonde.
"It's still anyone's battle, you're right!" Ash agrees then looked at Paul. "Okay, Paul, watch this!" Ash calls Paul who only snort at that.
"Alright, Ash. It's time for my next Pokémon!" Roark said. "Let's go!" He calls out his next Pokémon and the Rock Snake Pokémon.
Onix appeared to the field as it let out a prideful roar.
"I'm gonna stick with Turtwig, Roark!" Ash tells the Gym Leader.
"Alright then, ready?" Roark asks.
"You bet! Turtwig, Razor Leaf!" Ash calls.
Turtwig swings its head and razor-sharp leaves shoot out from the leaves on its head at Onix
"Good one! That Razor Leaf should do a lot of damage!" Brock comments.
"Dodge, then Double Edge!" Roark called. The Rock Snake Pokémon dodged Razor Leaf and smashed onto Turtwig towards the ground
Turtwig gets knocked out in one hit "Turtwig is unable to battle! Onix wins!" Ian announces.
"Turtwig!" Ash calls.
"Pika!" Pikachu gasps.
Dawn looks shock "No way with one hit!?" She questions out of disbelief with what she just happened.
"Looks like Cranidos Flamethrower made a number on it" Gary states.
Brock nods "It must have down a lot more damage than I initially thought!" he sighs with disappointment.
"Kay, Turtwig! Return!" Ash calls back as Turtwig was sent back into his Pokeball. "You were great!" He praises the Grass Starter Pokémon before he looks at Pikachu. "So, Pikachu! I guess it's all up to you, now!" Ash calls.
Pikachu nodded and jumped towards the battlefield to face Onix.
"I know that it's your last Pokémon! But I am not going to go easy on ya!" Roark tells Ash.
"Right! Iron Tail!" Ash yells.
"Nice big Slam!" Roark shouted.
Both Pikachu and Onix made their strong physical moves, making an explosion, but both took damage, with Pikachu reaching its near limits.
"Iron Tail is a good match up, but I'm afraid Pikachu has reached his limit." Brock replied.
"Pikachu! I know you can do it!" Dawn calls.
"Pikachu, keep this up!!" Gary calls out
"Alright then, I know that Electric Types aren't going to do any damage on Ground Types, and what about that speed?" Ash questions himself thinking.
Then, Ash has an idea "Of course! Pikachu, use Thunderbolt on the field!" Ash calls.
The Electric Mouse Pokémon gave its last effort to shock the field, startling Onix "Now, Onix! Use Double Edge!" Roark called. As Onix tried to use his powerful move, but the rocks prevented Onix from moving Roark grew surprised by this.
"Brock, what's going on?" Dawn asks.
"This is great! Those rocks have slowed Onix down a lot!" Brock exclaimed.
"Okay, Pikachu! Now, use Quick Attack!" Ash called. Pikachu charged towards Onix to use Quick Attack.
"Onix, Screech Attack!" Roark shouts and Onix let out a high pitch screech, causing Pikachu to stop.
Pikachu tried to hold on, but Onix powered up the Screech, knocking Pikachu out! "Pikachu!" Ash calls out.
Volo covers his face with his hands 'Fuck! this is even scarier in person' he thinks out of fear even though he know how this will end up.
The smoke cleared, revealing Pikachu not knocked down yet. "You're okay!" Ash asks.
But Pikachu is not okay as it faceplanted on the ground, fainted.
Ash gasped with this and grows silent. "Pikachu is unable to battle! Onix is the winner, meaning that the winner is Roark, the Gym Leader!" Ian announces.
Ash grew silent as ever as he couldn't think of what to say.
Roark walked to Onix. "Onix, great work!" Roark compliments. Onix growled with pride.
"So, that's it. It's over, huh?" Dawn asks.
"It was going well. Up into the point when Pikachu used Thunderbolt on the field but who would have predicted that Onix's screech do any damage!" Brock sighed.
Gary also sighs "You can say that again" he agrees before seeing Volo getting up "Volo?" he questions making everyone look at the blonde.
"I'm going to train as I wait for Roark's Pokémon to be a hundred percent better" he explains before leaving with Petilil in his arms.
Ash walked over to Pikachu and picked him up. "Pikachu, you're the best..." Ash complimented. Pikachu denied it with a shook of its head. As Ash looked up, to see Paul leaving and he stood up. "Oh yeah." He mumbled.
Paul just snorted. "How pathetic." Paul sneered as he walked out of the Gym following Volo, leaving Ash only glaring at him.
And so, our Hero's first attempt at a Sinnoh victory ends in his first defeat. The road to a Sinnoh League victory may be a long and rocky one, but we'll be there every step of the way. But the real question is how's Volo going to take on this path of growth or what plans does he have against Roark?
