Ch-24 A Duel

Skylar woke up the next morning. It was Halloween. It was a Tuesday morning so they had the most boring class ever first: History of Magic. It was the only class taught by a ghost teacher. Skylar was quite excited about it at first until she realized it was a big fat joke or something. The only real thing that was interesting was the rare Professor Cuthert Binns's entrance through one of the walls. This was not an abnormal sight at Hogwarts. There were ghosts everywhere and they were doing that all the time. The first-years are the only ones who get scared or surprised but they get used to it by the end of the year.

Skylar once heard that Professor Binns was very old when he sat next to the fireplace in the staff room. When he woke up the morning and got up to teach, he left his body behind and never noticed but the method of his teachings were never different. His method of teaching is to drool on and on and on and on about witches and wizards and other nonsense that they learn in Wizarding History until the class was done. Because of his teaching methods, almost everyone in his classes have a good long nap. Only a few kids sometimes wake up to copy down some dates or names but soon enough their heads are back on the table. The only person who was attentive was Riddle. Of course, the saintly, angelic, and PERFECT Riddle, Skylar sometimes thought.

Finally, the class ended and everyone filled out of the room. Eileen and Skylar went to the Great Hall. It was amazing. There were thousands of live bats flying in the ceiling and hundreds of Jack O'lanterns. A few feet away from them, there was a low sniffing sound. It was obvious. It was Myrtle Warren crying because she got bullied about something. So far she had not made any friends at Hogwarts at all except Skylar and Eileen.

 "Myrtle, what's wrong?" Eileen asked.

 "O-Oliver Hornb-b-by... m-made fun o-of m-me... a-again!" she whined.

"That kid and his sister needs to back off!"

Skylar noticed there were people looking at them. It was quite understandable. They were the three people who were the least likely to be together, or at least, people would not expect Skylar, a very smart but Muggle-born Slytherin, to be hanging out with Eileen, the Muggle-loving, unattractive, Gobstones-addicted girl or Myrtle, a crybaby who was bullied every other day. Skylar sometimes thought of just dumping them but, after all, they were her only best friends at Hogwarts. Mark and Cerilla had friend groups of their own so they never were really in the weird trio. Skylar called all of them friends but she had a small thought of her own.

Skylar left the Great Hall before the others because "I have a ton of homework to do" which was an excuse that always worked no matter what. Her real reason to go back to the Slytherin common room was to scare some more Slytherins. She reached the Slytherin common room and entered it. Who should she meet, other than the handsome, saintly, angelic, PERFECT Tom Marvolo Riddle? He was holding a book and sneering. The book was To Become The Greatest.

"Hello, there, Tenebriser. You came at exactly the right moment. You seemed to have left this lying around in the common room. Let's take a look shall we? I don't like the look of this book for some reason."

Skylar started to panic. Surely he was Skylar's worst enemy but she would never try to kill him in that way, or not at this moment when they were the only ones in the common room and all the evidence would point to her and ruin her cover as a saintly Muggle-born who was put into Slytherin for some unlucky reason.

"Riddle, if you know what's good for you, DON'T OPEN THE BOOK!"

He gave a mischievous but uncertain look and opened the book. Skylar braced herself for what was going to come. However, it did not happen.

"What is this, Tenebriser? Why would you not want anyone to read thi- Oh, look what I found. Unforgivable curses... and a lot more... HA! You're lucky it was me who found it, Tenebriser, if it were found by someone else they would go straight to Professor Dippet. Well, as much as I feel the urge to do that, I don't think I will but..." he stared at Skylar with a sneer. "On one condition."

 "What?"

"Duel. Wands only. Tomorrow at the Duelling Dungeon. You win, your secret is safe, I win... prepare for the worst. Also..." he closed the book and threw it to Skylar. She caught it and raised one of her eyebrows at Riddle. He had already set off towards the boys' dormitory. Just as he was about to close the door he shouted, "No Dark Arts from you, Tenebriser!!!!!"

Skylar opened the warning on the book.

'I have not read  it the wrong way... If a person who does not have Slytherin's blood shall open this book, blood will spurt out of his eyes, causing him a painful death... WAIT does that mean...'

Skylar looked at the direction of the boy's dormitory.

'Riddle is a descendant of Slytherin, too?!'

"WHY THE HELL DID YOU DECIDE TO DUEL WITH RIDDLE? ARE YOU INSANE?!", Eileen asked when Skylar told her and Myrtle about the duel.

Maybe Skylar was. But this was a once in a lifetime opportunity which was too sweet to give up. She and Riddle already got a warning from Professors Slughorn and Dumbledore that duelling on grounds was prohibited but Riddle sought permission from Professor Dippet by saying it was for educational purposes. Professor Dippet gave permission, but under the condition that it should be under teacher supervision. Eileen and Myrtle tried to get Skylar to give up. Skylar never caved in. Once she was in the field, she was going to fight her way until she won. If she was dragged out, she was going to come back and put up a more severe fight in whatever form she could. Getting out on her own foot without fighting was out of her mind.

A week or two at most later, Skylar stood at the center of the Duelling Dungeon, facing Riddle. Almost the whole Slytherin house was there along with a few people from other houses like Sylen from Hufflepuff and Myrtle and Cerilla from Ravenclaw. They were all filled with excitement. This was a duel between two of the best pupils in their year.

They bowed and drew their wands. Riddle went first.

 "Flipendo!"

Skylar easily dodged and almost at the same time, said, "Rictusempra!"

 "Protego! Expelliarmus!"

 "Locomotor Wibbly!"

They dodged, fired spells and defended themselves. Sometimes, the watchers got hit with the curses and jinxes but luckily, since it was under teacher supervision, they were not much hurt. It lasted for hours and it was getting near lunchtime.

"This is the last one, Tenebriser!" shouted Riddle. His eyes flashed a red gleam which only Skylar seemed to notice. "SERPENSO-"

 "OCUSTOSERVO!"

In astonishment everyone froze, some with mouth hanging open. There was a stream of fire issuing out of the tip of Skylar's wand. Then it solidified into a bright red vixen. The vixen dashed towards the snake conjured by Riddle. She was following the direction of Skylar's wand. The snake vanished when the vixen came in contact with it. Riddle fired many spells at the fox but she seemed to absorb it all. Skylar thought in her mind, 'I trained for days, Riddle. Nothing can repel this spell... except one or two things you do not know...'

Riddle started backing away as the vixen started to get closer. He shouted "Protego!"; it ignored the shield and went on. He did some jinx at Skylar to stop her controlling it; the vixen absorbed the jinx just in time to save Skylar. Nothing Riddle tried worked. Nothing. He knew the situation was hopeless. The professors were all astonished. It was quite a complicated spell; it was probably beyond N.E.W.T. (which is for seventh-years) level.

'Just disarm him. He would've got more than that but unfortunately it is under teacher supervision,' Skylar said to the vixen in her mind when Riddle was standing against the wall. The vixen tried to get Riddle's wand out of his hand.

'It's alright to use heat,' Skylar muttered under her breath. Her eyes gleamed red for a moment, not like the usual very, very faint one but it was only noticed by Riddle. The vixen now lunged at Riddle's wand arm. Riddle's hand was almost burning because of the heat. He let his wand go and fell to the ground, moaning. The vixen picked the wand up and handed it to Skylar.

 'Thanks.'

As Skylar said it with a flick of her wand, her guardian disappeared. She looked around gave Riddle's wand to Professor Dumbledore and said, "I think he needs to be taken to the hospital wing. I fear I might have lost control of the vixen for a few seconds..."

"It's alright. Be careful next time. Congratulations."

Skylar left the dungeons with Eileen and Myrtle behind her.
