Chapter 8
(Third Person POV)
"Nice to meet you Jinhee. My name is Kim Taehyung," the man in front of her – Taehyung, said. To Jinhee, he seemed like a harmless person, someone who just wanted to run a small cafe.
"The one who seems harmless is more dangerous," her mother's voice floated in her head. She shouldn't trust him . . . yet.
"Hello? HELLO! JINHEE!" Taehyung waved his hand in front of Jinhee and she snapped out of her thoughts.
"Huh?" she asked bewildered.
"I asked if you had previous experience working in a cafe," he replied.
"Yes, I did. I worked there for two years before it closed down due to the lack of customers," Jinhee answered. But of course, Taehyung knew that.
"I hope my cafe doesn't close down that way," he laughed and Jinhee managed a smile. "You will be in charge of the drinks, taking orders and you will work as a cashier as well. Do you think you can meet these requirements?" he asked and Jinhee nodded.
"I'll be observing you when our first customers come in. If they are pleased, you're in," Taehyung said and walked through the 'Staff Only' door. "You're free to explore!" he yelled from inside.
The cafe was tiny, yet cozy. At the front were two glass displays on either side of the door, one displaying various cakes and cookies, while the other displayed sandwiches, slices of bread and a few of the drinks. There were eight tables, each with two chairs, apart from the two at the back which had four chairs each. Near them was the counter with equipment to make every single drink she could think of. Behind the counter was the door that Taehyung walked through which led to the kitchen.
Jinhee walked through the doors and she gawked at the sight in front of her. She didn't know what she expected to see, but it definitely wasn't this.
It was a ginormous kitchen like the one professional chefs work in. There were multiple ovens, grills, cupcake moulds, cookie trays, loaves of freshly baked bread, sacks of flour, sugar and other ingredients. It even had a frosting station with types of nozzles she didn't even know existed.
"Woah..." she whispered as she walked around. In a corner was Taehyung, putting some jam on a tiny piece of bread.
"The kitchen is amazing, right? Do you want some of this? It tastes really good," he asked and showed the bread to Jinhee.
"Sure," she said automatically, not being able to resist hunger anymore. She took a bite and as the flavourful jam flooded her mouth, she felt like it was heaven. She didn't know whether it was because of the jam or her hunger and she didn't care. All she wanted was to eat more of this masterpiece.
"Do you like it?" Taehyung asked her.
"Like it? I love it!" Jinhee exclaimed and Taehyung smiled.
"Do you want more?" he asked Jinhee and she nodded vigorously.
"Okay, then here we go!" he yelled and started making more of them. It took him half an hour to make enough of them to satisfy poor Jinhee's hunger.
"Are you full now?" he asked for the hundredth time and, to his delight, Jinhee nodded. "Phew," he sighed and slouched on the kitchen counter. "You ate like you haven't eaten for a month."
"Not a month but yes, I haven't eaten in a while," she replied.
"Huh? Why?" Taehyung asked her.
"It's because . . ." she hesitated. She can't reveal why. A bell echoed across the cafe, indicating the arrival of customers and saving Jinhee from answering the question.
"I'll get their order," Jinhee replied and quickly slipped out of the kitchen, secretly thanking the customers for the interruption. "How may I help-" her voice got stuck in her throat.
In front of her were six gorgeous angels smiling at her.
"Am I in a parallel universe?" she asked herself.
"Hyungs! Kookie! You came!" Taehyung yelled excitedly as he burst through the door.
"You better pay us back. Do you have any idea how many hours of sleep I gave up in order to here at this time?" one of them snapped, clearly annoyed.
"Haha, mian. I'll pay you back with amazing drinks made by my wonderful assistant right here," he said and pointed at Jinhee.
"You better," he mumbled and collapsed into a chair nearby while everyone started yelling out their order.
"I'll get them in a few minutes," Jinhee replied politely and disappeared behind the counter, determined to make the best drinks they had ever tasted in their lives. And of course, she did. They had never tasted something so good in their whole lives.
"She is the perfect barista," one of them complimented with a smile.
"Thank you," Jinhee replied with a 90-degree bow.
"You did well," the man who was sleepy replied.
"So hyung was it worth it for you to come here at this time?" Taehyung asked him and he gave a tiny nod, small enough to go unnoticed. They hung around for a few minutes before leaving.
"Please come again," Jinhee said and returned to the counter, eager to hear whether she got the job or not. She looked at Taehyung for the answer but he walked straight past her into the kitchen. A familiar gloom settled onto Jinhee. She knew it. She didn't get the job. That's why he ignored her.
Shoulders drooping and cursing herself for not doing a better job, she walked into the kitchen to grab her coat. She walked slowly with her head down, hoping that Taehyung would change his mind, but he didn't utter a word. When she was at the door, Jinhee finally looked up. There was a creamy cake with chocolate frosting lit with candles, their light radiating Taehyung's face even more.
"Congratulations on your new job, Kang Jinhee," he said with a smile.
A/N: I don't know anything about jobs so don't judge this too hard.
