Voice of Truth [Chpt 10]

Chapter 10 - Sick

I woke up in the middle of the night coughing. I had a stuffy nose and I didn't feel good. I'm not supposed to get sick. I was having a good night too. Mya and I watched a scary movie with some popcorn. Actually the movie wasn't even scary. It was more like a mystery movie. But I had fun with Mya. Now I'm lying on the pull out couch with a stuffy nose. Ugh. This totally sucks.

"Hey, Kasie."

I got startled and turned over. Mya was sitting up.

"Are you okay? You don't sound too good." She said.

"I don't feel good." I said.

She rubbed her eyes and reached over to the stand that was next to the couch. She opened her cell phone and called someone.

"Hello." I heard someone say in the background half asleep.

"Ethan, Kasie isn't feeling well. Maybe you should take her home."

"It's three in the morning Mya." He said.

"I know, but I feel bad. I don't want her to suffer here all night. Take her home and make her feel better."

"You want me to take care of her."

"Yes. I'm not going to let her get sick alone at her house."

He sighed. "I'll be over in a couple of minutes."

"Thanks."

She hung up.

"Why'd you have to call him?" I asked her.

"You didn't want me to?"

"No." I said.

"I'm sorry. But, he - I - uh. He's just going to bring you home."

I sighed and turned over looking away from her. "I don't like him around me." I whispered.

"Why?"

I shouldn't have said that. Now she's going to tell Ethan . . .

"Never mind." I said.

"No I want to know. Is there something wrong?"

"Not really."

"What's wrong with him?"

I shook my head. "I don't know." I said.

"Yes you do."

"I just hate him." I whispered.

"What?"

"I don't like him." I said louder.

Man, she does the same thing Ethan does. They're the perfect couple.

"Why don't you like him though?"

"Because I just don't."

She got silent for a couple of minutes.

"Do you know about his father?" I asked.

"His father? Yeah, I know about it."

"Do you . . . get scared when Ethan gets angry?"

"Ethan doesn't usual get angry at me. It's more for me than it is at me. Did, he do something to you?"

I shook my head. "No . . . Can you keep a secret?"

"Yeah."

"Promise you won't tell Ethan."

"I promise." She said in curiosity.

"The truth is . . . I'm scared of him."

"Why are you scared of him?" She asked.

"You've seen him beat up all those kids. Doesn't that just scare you even a little? Then what his father did to him . . . Sometimes I'm afraid he'll take all his angry out on me. That he'll act just like his father."

"Kasie, that will never happen."

"How do you know? People change Mya . . . He was so nice when I knew him. Now, I feel like ever since I pushed him away, his anger has gotten worse."

"He just has anger issues."

"That's the thing. You're his girlfriend aren't you scared one day he'll end up dead like Jake?"

Words popped up in my head. 'He never loses.'

That's right. Those were the words Mya told me when they were fighting. He never loses . . . That doesn't mean he'll never die.

I heard a knock on the door.

Mya didn't say anything she just got up and unlocked the door. Ethan came in rubbing his face. He had a dark blue hoodie on and he wore black pajama bottoms and I think a gray shirt.

"Come on." He told me.

I got up and my head started pounding. I put my hoodie on; which was still Ethan's hoodie. Then I grabbed my bag.

"Thanks for having me over." I told Mya.

"Uh, yeah. Call me if you need anything."

"Okay." I went outside.

"See you." Ethan said to Mya. He shut the door behind him.

I got in the car still half out of it. The car was still running when I got in. Ethan got in the other side and drove down the road.

"You're sick, huh?" Ethan said.

I shrugged.

"I came out here in the middle of the night to take you home. So you better be sick."

Harsh! There is no 'I hope you get better Kasie.' 'Oh thanks Ethan, I will get better real soon.'

Jerk.

Ethan pulled up in my drive way. I got out of the car and so did he. I'm guessing he's coming in.

"Do you have medicine here?" He asked.

I shrugged.

"You're a lot of help."

I got my keys from my bag and unlocked my door. I went inside and threw my bag on the couch. I could really care less where my bag was placed. Ethan went in the kitchen where I keep the medicine. He has to make sure I take my medicine. I am a responsible adult. I think I can take medicine on my own.

"Do you have a fever?" Ethan asked me.

"I don't know." I said.

He came out to the living room and put a hand to my forehead. "Yeah, you have a fever." He took his hand off from me and went back to the kitchen.

I sat on the couch waiting for him to come back. I can fall asleep right now if I wanted to. Ethan came back with a little pill and a bottle of water.

"Here take this." He handed me the pill and water.

I took the pill and then sat the water down on the coffee table. I looked over at Ethan.

"Are you going to leave?" I asked.

He sat down on the couch to the far right of me. "I'm going to stay and see how you're doing."

I stood up. "If you're going to stay, stay down here." I said and went upstairs.

I closed my door and plopped down on my bed and stared at the ceiling. I'd feel more comfortable if Ethan left but it looks like I'm going to have to deal with it.

I heard the door open but I didn't open my eyes to see who it was. I already had a pretty good guess on who it was. A cold hand touched my cheek. I still have a fever I'm guessing. But it felt good on my cheek. The hand was removed from my face. After a couple of minutes I couldn't tell if he left or not. I didn't pay attention to it and I went back into my deep sleep.

I woke up. I felt very sick to my stomach and I think my fever got worse or something. I sat up and I noticed my door was open. I looked over on the floor to my right and noticed Ethan sleeping on the ground. How long has he been there? He had his arm under his head for a pillow and he was curled up like he was cold. I laid down the opposite way and looked over the side of the bed looking down at Ethan. I took my hand and moved his hair away from his eyes. He looks so cute when he's asleep. Ha, what am I saying?

I sat back up and took a blanket off my bed. I put the blanket over Ethan and got off my bed. I felt a little dizzy after I got up but it passed. I went out of my room and shut the door quietly. I went downstairs and plopped down on the couch. I don't feel like going to the kitchen to get more medicine. I don't even know which one Ethan gave me. It's nine o'clock. Ugh, it feels earlier than that. I heard a creak and quickly looked over. Ethan was over by the stairs rubbing his eyes.

"You're lucky my mom works nights." He said walking over to the couch.

"I never told you to stay." I said looking away.

"I know, I wanted to make sure you were fine."

"As you can see, I feel horrible."

"Do you want me to pick you up something?"

"No."

"Are you sure?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'm sure."

He went into the kitchen and came out with a little bottle. He put it on the coffee table.

"Take one of these in the morning and at night until your fever goes away, okay?"

"Yeah."

"I'll be back later."

"Yeah, okay."

He looked at me and then left the house. I went to go fall asleep but then I heard something ring. I sat up and looked at my bag that was sitting on the ground next to me. I grabbed it and took my phone out of my bag. Unknown Caller. Maybe it's Sam's new home number. He would tell me if it is though. I picked it up.

"Hello?" I said. My voice was kind of raspy.

"Uh, is Hunter there?" Someone said.

Hunter?

"I think you have the wrong number." I said.

"Wait, who is this?"

"This is Kasie." I said not too sure if I should be giving out my name.

"Kasie? Kasie, I know you."

"You do?"

"Yeah, I'm Alec. We met the other day at school."

"Alec?"

"Yeah, funny I got your number." He said.

"Yeah, that's weird."

"Are you sick or something? You don't sound good."

"I have a fever and I really don't feel good."

"Oh, I'm sorry. That kind of sucks right on the second day of summer."

"Yeah."

"I'll let you go so you can get some rest."

"Okay."

"I'll talk to you some time."

"Sounds fine."

"Bye."

"Bye." I hung up.

I went to received calls and added the number to my contacts. I put the phone on the coffee table and plopped back down on the couch. It's kind of weird that he was calling someone and it ended up to be me.

I sighed to myself and then my stomached growled. I want something to eat but I don't really have anything. Also I don't feel like getting a stomachache. But I don't care. That's no reason to starve myself. I reached over for my phone and again and texted Ethan.

'When you come back over can you bring some chicken noodle soup?'

I pressed send and I put the TV on and waited for his reply. As soon as it rung I quickly looked at it.

'I asked if you wanted me to get you something. But yes I will. Anything else?'

'Nope. Thank you.'

I'm actually kind of happy that Ethan and I are getting along good. But that still doesn't change the fact that I get scared of him. No matter what he'll always be that short tempered person. But at least he'll be my short tempered friend.
