Chapter One - The First Sixteen Years of my Life
It all began when I was in Kindergarten. My parents dropped me off at school eight thirty AM sharp. They came in the class room with me till I was comfortable to be on my own. Mrs. Washwell was my teacher for the year. Very kind and gentle. She showed me to my seat that I would be sitting in. To my left was a little geeky girl with black plastic glasses and long bronze hair with brown eyes. Her name was Ginger Flight. To my right there was a boy with black short hair. His name was Ethan Hawkins. They were my two best friends. Ethan and I just kind of clicked and Ginger and I basically loved all the same things.
Second Grade, Ginger moved far away. I speak to her on the phone once in a while but never see her in person.
Ethan and I were best friends up to Fifth grade. A new kid came in Fifth grade, Jake Seeker. He had dirty blonde hair and it was long. Not too long. About, not even an inch above his eye brows. Ethan's hair is now that length. He grew it out over the years. Jake's eyes are a gray blueish color. Kind of black looking. I started hanging out with Jake and started pushing Ethan away.
Sixth Grade, Ethan found himself a girlfriend, Mya Rejor. She has bleach blonde hair, medium length, and green eyes. After I had a boyfriend and he had a girlfriend we went our separate ways.
Seventh Grade, I found out my parents died in a fire at work. I was thirteen had no other relatives but I managed to live on my own. We were rich and my parents had a lot of money saved. I lived off that money, no work or anything. The house was already paid off for six years.
Eighth Grade, I made a new friend. His name is Sam Piper. I started hanging out with him and Jake. Once in a while I'll hang out with Ethan but not alone, in a group. The only thing is I don't talk to him.
Tenth Grade, five days before school ends. Today is Monday; Jake is picking me up to go to school. I'm sixteen years old, I can drive but I don't usually because of Jake. I have long dirty blonde hair and my eyes are light blue. Ethan, Mya, Sam, Jake and I are all supposed to go to the movies tonight. Some horror movie Ethan wants to see. He always goes to see them.
Maybe if Ethan doesn't get in trouble we'll go. He's always getting in fights. He's been in detention so many times he has his own desk just for him. Mya never does anything about it; she always leaves him to fight. She's probably so use to it that she doesn't care.
I heard a car beep outside, Jake is waiting for me. I ran down stairs grabbed my black book bag with all my little key chains on it and went out the door. I made sure I locked it and got in the car.
"Hey, you doing okay?" Jake asked me like he always does.
"Yeah." I said like I always do.
"Got everything?"
"Yes let's just get these five days over with." I rushed him.
"Sounds good to me." He said driving out of the drive way.
Jake walked by my side into school. I looked around for Sam but there was no sign of him.
"Sam is going to be a little late. He was packing and lost some of his books." Jake explained.
"It's sad he's moving." I said.
"Yeah he's been here for three years."
The halls filled with the ringing bell telling everyone class was going to start.
"Better get to class." Jake said. "Don't wanna be late again, see ya later."
He walked away.
"Shut up!" I heard someone say.
It came from down the hall. Everyone was going to class leaving the halls empty, so I figured I'd take a look to see who it was. I heard a thud and I turned the corner. I figured as much.
Ethan pushed a kid down. His books all over the floor and had a bloody nose and no one else was around to witness it.
"I know you've been spreading rumors!" Ethan said angry.
"They're not rumors." The kid said. "It's true."
"If anything happens . . ." Ethan threatened.
"I can't stop him." He blurted out.
"You better tell someone about it then!"
The kid noticed me and Ethan turned around. His eyes were so blue, with his long black hair just above his eyes; it's the first thing you notice. But he was mad, I hate when he gets like that.
"Kasie, I . . ."
I put my hand up in front of me to stop him. "Don't wanna hear it."
I started to walk away.
"Kasie!" He yelled.
"Kasie Rose, Ethan Hawkins." I heard a deep voice say.
I stopped as I knew right there it was Mr. Baker the principal. I turned around to him and saw anger in his eyes.
"You two, my office now." He demanded.
I looked over at Ethan who had an angry expression as well as Mr. Baker. I bit my lip down and didn't argue.
We're in the office alone till Mr. Baker comes back with our files. The kid was sent down to Mrs. Gavin the nurse. They said he was going to be alright.
"How much did you hear?" Ethan asked not looking at me.
"They're not rumors to, tell someone."
A big sigh of relief came out from him.
"What were you talking about?" I asked.
"Nothing." He said softly.
"You never tell me anything."
"I'm never with you."
"Well you could at least tell me this one thing."
He looked over at me. "How about you keep your mouth shut and not tell anyone about what happened in the hall. Then me and you go back to not saying a word to each other."
"If I say no." I said.
"It's not like I'll hit you, I don't hit girls."
"But you want to, that's all that matters."
Mr. Baker came in with the files. I turned around from Ethan as Mr. Baker sat down.
"Ethan, it's the last week before school ends and you already hit another kid. What was the reason this time?"
"Nothing." He quickly answered in anger.
"Kasie, you're a bright young lady. Did you happen to know what happened?" He asked me.
I looked at Ethan; he had his arms folded across his chest and was staring toward the ground. I looked back at Mr. Baker.
"No, I was late for class and happened to pass by."
"Well, Ethan I'm not going to call your mom but it better not happen again. Detention for today, Kasie I'm going to let you off the hook."
"Of course." I heard Ethan say.
"Mr. Baker is it really necessary for Ethan to have detention?" I asked.
"Yes, he hurt a kid which is a violation to our rules."
"Can't get you out of this one." I whispered to Ethan.
"You two can leave now."
We got up and left the office. No one was in the halls when we came out. Ethan already had a head start down the hall.
"Ethan." I said walking fast after him.
"Just go to class Kasie."
"I am in your class."
"Oh, well keep your mouth shut so we can get to class."
"What happened to you?" I asked.
He stopped quickly and I ran into him hard and fell on the ground.
"Listen Kasie, you've changed I've changed, we're not the same anymore."
He reached his hand out.
"I don't want your help." I got up and headed the other way.
"Where you going?" He asked.
"Home."
"Won't you get in trouble?"
"No. I don't have parents remember!" I yelled at him.
I sat in my room alone and my phone rang. It was Jake, probably wondering where I was.
"Hey."
"Kasie, where are you?" He asked.
"I'm home."
"Why are you home?"
"I just needed to be home."
"I'll come there after school."
"Actually, can you not come? I just want to be alone."
"Uh yeah . . . But I'll just call you to make sure you're okay."
"That's fine."
"Are we still on for tonight though?"
"Yeah."
"I'll get you at nine."
"Kay."
"See ya."
"Bye." I pressed end.
Well this is how my life is. I can do whatever I want whenever I want and no one to tell me anything. I've been living alone most of my life. I'm not in an orphanage because of Jake. His parents watch out for me, I'm like part of their family.
Later at night, Jake was down stairs waiting for me. I got my jacket, my phone and my wallet and headed down stairs.
"Okay I'm ready." I said walking up to him.
He pulled me close and kissed me hard on the lips.
"You sure you want to go to this horror movie?" He asked staring deeply into my eyes.
"Yeah, let's go."
"Sam is in the car."
"Well he's waiting then." I mentioned.
We went to the car and I sat in the passenger seat and Jake drove.
"Glad you can join us." Sam said in the back seat.
"Yeah, yeah."
He chuckled and smiled.
At the theater Ethan and Mya were waiting for us when we got there. What a sight when we walked in. I knew he did it on purpose. Sometimes I just think he kisses her in front of me just to get me jealous or mad. He saw us and stopped, looked at me and winked. I stuck my tongue out at him then he shook his head at me. Of course no one saw us exchange looks. I wanted to go over there and punch him in the face. He wouldn't have pretty eyes if I do that.
I got my ticket from Jake and he said I could pick the seats. So I went to the middle and sat all the way to the end. I plopped down distraught.
"Did something happen today?" Jake asked.
"No." I lied.
"Something is wrong."
"Just a little tired. I went to bed late last night."
"Well you can always tell me . . . Do you want something to eat?"
"The usual please."
"Kay, I'll be back."
He kissed my forehead and got up.
"I'll come with you." Sam said.
They both left the row and Jake looked over at Ethan mad like he knew something. I also saw Ethan staring at him. It gave me the chills with the evil looks they had.
"I'm going to go use the bathroom." I heard Mya say behind me.
Figures they sit there.
"Okay." He said.
I heard her flip flops when she got up and walked away. I was getting cold because the air conditioning was on and I left my jacket in Jake's car. I was wearing shorts, flip flops, and my white spaghetti strap shirt that was long.
Mya's flip flops faded away. That was bad news because I don't want to be left alone with Ethan. Too late now.
Ethan hopped up next to me. I was just thankful that there were lots of people here for witnesses. He put his arm around me. I almost took my elbow and hit him in the side but I didn't.
"I'm sorry about earlier. I didn't mean for it to go that far." He apologized.
"Whatever."
"Kasie, come on. Don't be like this, you were my best friend."
I caught that one word in that sentence. '"You 'were' my best friend."
"I was?" I asked shocked.
"No, I didn't mean it as . . ."
I cut him off. "You know what." I took his arm and shoved it off me. "How about you shut your mouth then me and you go back to not saying a word to each other." I said the same words he told me back at school.
"Kasie, I . . ."
"Was just going back to your seat. You might want to before Jake comes back."
"The only reason I wouldn't beat him up is because he's with you."
I was completely shocked. He got up and hopped back over to his seat. I turned around confused.
"Why?" I asked.
"Why what?" He asked angry.
"Why because of me?"
He shrugged. "If you're happy I'm happy."
"I know you don't approve of him."
"We all know that Kasie."
Mya came back and I turned back around. Jake and Sam came back right after Mya did. Jake handed me my Sour Patch Kids.
"Thanks." I said.
Sam and Jake sat down.
"You're freezing cold." Jake said.
"Yeah I know. I forgot my jacket in your car."
Jake took his jacket off and gave it to me.
"Won't you be cold?" I asked.
"No, I'll be fine."
For some reason those words didn't quite make sense. 'I'll be fine.' Those words scare me for some reason.
Because no one will be fine.
