Chapter 1: Kathryn

Kathryn Wallace sat back on her heels in the small shack where she lived alone. She hadn't used to live there alone, but the person who had brought her here no longer lived at all. In fact, she hadn't used to live here at all. Kathryn reflected back on the circumstances in her life that had brought her here. She had been born the only child of Vaughn and Margaret Wallace, high-standing, rich socialites. Their prestigious status as owners of a large company had gone to their heads. As a result, they cared more about attending and hosting expensive elaborate parties and drinking at bars than caring for their young daughter. Because of this, Kathryn had been cared for by a maid her whole life. Her first nanny was an old woman named Anna. Anna was only there for a year before she had become sick and had left the position. That's when Sailor had come. Sailor was not a typical "nanny." She was a girl with a dark sense of humor and who was very street smart. She only took the job because it paid well and because the Wallaces were willing to overlook her background so they didn't have to care for their daughter. Sailor thought at once that the Wallaces were despicable excuses for human beings, and she thought that their daughter couldn't help but be the same way. But Sailor was pleasantly surprised, because Kathryn was very sweet and not spoiled at all.
For the first few days Sailor was there, Kathryn was very uncomfortable with her. But soon she grew to love Sailor, as she seemed to know everything about anything, and would answer any questions Kathryn would throw at her. Kathryn was very smart and inquisitive, and the two of them would talk for hours on end about all different aspects of life. Kathryn especially liked that Sailor would teach her how to fight and how to pick locks, and how to do all manner of other things completely inappropriate for a rich young girl to know how to do. By the time Kathryn was seven, she was an expert at all of them. She was an incredibly quick learner, and Sailor recognized this, pushing Kathryn harder and harder as a result. Sailor, recognizing the girl's potential, arranged for her to be moved up to a higher grade level and placed in more challenging classes. Under this, Kathryn excelled. She and Sailor grew closer than ever, and Sailor even took to affectionately calling Kathryn Katie.
One day after Sailor had taught Kathryn a particularly hard fighting style, Kathryn got a thoughtful look on her face. "Sailor," she remarked, "I would love to live like you do, dangerously. You have all these great stories, and you don't have to worry about anyone else. It must be nice, not having people obey everything you tell them."
Sailor worried about these strange fantasies of Katie's, but she suppressed it. "I guess sometimes it's fun, but you should be thankful for all the things you have."
After that year, Kathryn's life was changed even further. Her mother was killed in a car accident, and that drove her father mad. He became addicted to alcohol and ended up in jail for driving under influence. Now, with no one to care for her except for Sailor, Sailor took the girl with her to where she lived. Kathryn quickly proved adept at stealing and working petty crimes for the two of them to make a living. Sailor was saddened at what she had made Kathryn become, but she knew if she hadn't, Kathryn would have ended up in foster care, which would have ruined her. Also, Sailor had grown to truly love Kathryn, and refused to give her up.
One day, Sailor made a discovery about Kathryn that made everything fall into place, including the strange remark Kathryn had made that day several years ago, about everyone following her every command. She realized after watching Kathryn get out of being arrested simply by telling the policeman it hadn't been her that Kathryn's words carried the power to hypnotize people. After talking to other crooks in the area, she found out that those were called Sirens, and they were extremely powerful. Sailor told Kathryn all this, and Kathryn promised that she would not abuse it, for it could attract unwanted attention. With this discovery, Sailor knew Kathryn could not be a thief, that she shouldn't become a lowlife simply because she could control people. Sailor got a job and earned enough money to buy a house and care for them both, and she used the money of Kathryn's parents to keep Kathryn in school. But the life of a thief can never truly leave someone, for Sailor continued committing crimes. But one day, she overstepped her bounds and was killed by someone who wanted revenge. After Sailor's death, Kathryn became a full-fledged criminal. Using her power, she quickly became feared and respected among the criminal world, not caring what kind of attention she attracted. However, she used her power to make people forget how she had done it, so that no one knew how such a young girl could have become such a criminal. Her first step was to eliminate the ones had and killed Sailor. With this done, she moved on to more petty crime. Soon, she did attract attention, and was recruited for a government mission. The mission: Steal the world's most valuable and guarded gemstone...
