True to the Tune (Part 5)
That evening, Gabi, Becky, Vivo, and Stella were all huddled in Gabi's garage, surrounded by the scattered components of the techno street organ.
The room was filled with the steady hum of their work, punctuated by the occasional click and clatter of tools.
Gabi held a circuit board in her hands, her gaze fixed on it.
She broke the silence with a sigh, her words carrying the weight of her frustration.
It was a disaster, Becky. The organ didn't just stop. It made this horrible noise...all discordant and wrong...and then it just...died."
Becky offered a sympathetic look, putting a comforting hand on Gabi's shoulder.
"I can definitely tell, Gabi. But we'll fix it. We've always managed to fix things before. After all, I didn't get a badge in beginner mechanics for nothing."
Gabi retorted with her frustration mounting, "But it's not just the organ that's the problem. We're up against so many talented acts. We don't stand a chance."
Across the room, Vivo echoed Gabi's sentiment.
His small brow was furrowed in concentration, but his eyes carried a distant look.
"Stella, I think Gabi's right. Our act...it feels so small compared to everything we've seen."
Stella watched him, her heart aching at the sight.
She tried to console him, "Vivo, you've faced challenges before. And you've always found a way."
But Vivo replied with his voice barely above a whisper, "But Stella, this isn't like before. This is bigger. We're out of our league."
As the room fell silent again, Gabi put down the circuit board and turned to Becky, her eyes glassy with unshed tears.
She admitted with her voice trembling slightly, "Becky, I don't think I can do this anymore. The competition...it's too much. I think we should quit."
Becky looked taken aback by Gabi's words.
And Vivo felt the same way.
He said, his voice resonating with the same defeat, "Gabi's right, Stella. We can't compete with them. Maybe we should...maybe we should drop out."
Stella looked at Vivo, her heart sinking at the sight of his downcast eyes.
She tried to reassure him, "Vivo, you don't mean that."
But the defeated look in his eyes told her otherwise.
They both were seriously contemplating withdrawing from the competition.
Their conversation was interrupted by the creak of the garage door as Rosa entered.
She had been listening from the doorway with her heart heavy with the weight of their despair.
They had been so excited about the competition, but now, they were on the brink of giving up.
Seeing her daughter and her beloved partner in such a state prompted Rosa to act.
She had seen them face challenges before, but never had she seen them this disheartened.
She knew it was time to step in, time to remind them of their worth and their unique talents.
Rosa, with a determined look on her face, walked into the room and closed the door behind her.
She looked at her daughter, at Vivo, and their two friends.
She took a deep breath and began.
Rosa addressed them, her tone soft but firm, "Gabi, I overheard your conversation and I understand why you're feeling this way. But remember why you and Vivo signed up in the first place. It was not just to win a competition, but to share your unique talents with the world."
Gabi looked up at her mother, tears welling up in her eyes.
"But, Mom, what if our talent isn't enough? What if people don't like our performance? What if... what if we're not good enough?"
Rosa moved closer to Gabi and gently cupped her face.
"Gabi, you are good enough. Both of you are. And you know how I know that? Because I have seen the passion you two put into your performances. You two have a spark that I haven't seen in many performers."
Vivo chimed in, his voice heavy with uncertainty, "But Rosa, we can't deny the fact that there are many talented performers out there. We saw them."
Rosa nodded, understanding Vivo's nonverbal concern.
"Yes, Vivo. There are many talented performers out there. But remember, talent isn't about being the best. It's about expressing yourself in a way that only you can. And that's what makes you two special."
Just as Rosa was about to continue, they were interrupted by a knock at the garage door.
Becky, closest to the door, opened it to reveal Ricky and Lola standing there, looks of concern etched on their faces.
The sight of the salsa dancing couple took them all by surprise.
"We heard the organ's discordant sounds from down the block," Lola explained, "We thought we could come over and see if you guys needed any help."
Gabi and Vivo exchanged surprised glances.
Ricky and Lola were here in their garage?
And they wanted to help them?
Gabi asked out of genuine curiosity, "Why would you want to help us? We're your competition."
Rosa said, "Gabi..."
Though Ricky laughed at that, shaking his head.
"No, it's ok. That's actually a fair question. And to answer, we're not here because of the competition. We're here because we know how hard it is to prepare for something like this. The pressure, the uncertainty...we've been there."
Lola nodded, adding, "We remember our first competition. We were so nervous. We thought our act wasn't good enough compared to the others. We felt like quitting."
Ricky continued, "But then we realized something. Our act was ours. We were the only ones who could perform it the way we did. That made it special. And it made us realize that we were more than good enough."
Hearing Ricky and Lola's story, Gabi and Vivo were silent for a moment.
They turned to look at each other, a new understanding dawning in their eyes.
Rosa smiled, sensing the change in their moods.
"See? Everyone feels nervous and unsure at times. But what matters is that you believe in yourselves and your act. Because your act is yours and yours alone. It's special and unique, just like you two."
Inspired by their words, Gabi and Vivo felt a renewed sense of determination.
They might have experienced a setback, but they weren't ready to give up.
Not yet.
Because their act was theirs, and that's what made it special.
With renewed energy, they returned to their repairs and preparations, ready to face the competition head-on.
They may not know what the outcome would be, but they knew one thing for sure - they were more than good enough, and they were ready to show the world their unique act.
