True to the Tune (Part 2)
The next morning, Gabi and Vivo got up bright and early to head on over to the theater to start rehearsing for the music competition.
Vivo rode inside the organ while Gabi carried it on her scooter.
Once they got to the main entrance, some of the workers brought out a platform truck for the organ since the scooter couldn't go in.
It wasn't long before the organ was on the truck and Gabi and Vivo were on a roll into the theater...literally.
It wasn't long before they had made it to backstage behind the stage itself.
And it wasn't just them; there were actually other performers who signed up to participate in the music competition.
They saw an acoustic guitarist, a pianist, a violinist, a rock band.
They also saw an opera singer, a beatboxer, and even a steel drum band.
Gabi said in awe, "Huh? Looks like we're in for some stiff competition. But it's nothing we can't handle!"
Vivo replied, "Of course not. I mean, we've definitely faced a lot worse than stiff competition."
As Gabi continued rolling the organ to a good rehearsal spot, she was so amazed by how many performers there were...that she didn't see she was about to roll over a large rope.
When she hit the rope, the truck was hit so hard that the organ started shaking.
In fact, it was about to topple over, with Vivo inside!
Gabi quickly tried to catch it and flip it back on.
"Oh, no, no, no, no! Come on! Get back on!"
Just then, two other performers came to the rescue.
"Oh, here, sweetie, let us help!"
Thankfully, they were able to move it back up onto the truck.
Gabi and Vivo both sighed with relief.
Gabi then said, "Thanks so much. That could've been a disaster."
She turned to the people who helped her.
It was a middle-aged adult couple dressed for salsa dancing.
The lady said, "You're very welcome. My goodness, that thing is heavy. You must have a lot of things in there for your act."
Gabi responded, "Actually, it's not full of things for our act; it is the thing for our act."
The man asked, "Oh, 'our'? Are you performing with someone?"
Gabi answered, "Yep! My partner! He and I always do our shows together!"
The lady asked, "Oh, how wonderful! Performing with another is so much more fun than performing solo. So, when is he gonna get here?"
To that, Gabi responded, "Oh, actually...he is here."
The couple made slightly confused faces.
Gabi knocked on the side of the giant box, "Come on out, partner!"
And from inside the box came out...a small, fuzzy kinkajou.
He got on top of the box next to Gabi as she said, "I'm Gabi and this is my partner, Vivo."
Vivo chirped hello.
Seeing the cute honey bear, the lady immediately squealed and started rubbing his ears.
"What a cutie pie!"
Vivo wasn't one for just being touched, but he endured it just to be polite.
Gabi could see his slight displeasure and quickly said, "Uh, anyways, we've actually done our own performances daily in the Key West Plaza by the docks. But this is our very first music competition."
The man responded, "That sounds great! Good to have some professional experience under your belt."
He then said, "Oh, and my name is Ricky and this is my wife, Lola."
Lola stopped rubbing Vivo's ears and said, "Pleased to meet you both."
Gabi asked, "So, are you going to dance for the music competition?"
Lola answered, "Oh, yes. It's our favorite past time together. We spend all of our free time doing nothing but dance, dance, dance!"
Ricky said, "Although, salsa is our personal favorite."
Gabi said, "Huh. Salsa is actually my Vivo's favorite. Isn't that right, partner?"
Vivo chirped before he did a couple of cute salsa dance moves.
Ricky and Lola were amazed before they applauded.
Lola said, "That settles it; I cannot wait to see your rehearsal for the show."
Gabi and Vivo smiled with pride and excitement.
Just then, they heard the host of the music competition.
"Ok, everyone, we've got just one week before the competition! That means one week to practice your performances! So let's get started with rehearsals!"
Everyone backstage got into position to go onstage when they were called.
In the audience, the host said, "Ok, to get started, I would like to see...Mr. Gary O'Neal on acoustic guitar. Mr. O'Neal, to the stage, please! Thank you!"
The acoustic guitarist went onstage.
And when he started, he was very good.
He had a nice set of pipes and there was no wrong note in the song.
Gabi and Vivo were amazed.
But they were mostly excited to do their part.
After the guitarist came the pianist, then the violinist.
They were really good.
It was almost like listening to the radio because the songs went so fluently and perfectly.
Gabi and Vivo knew for sure they were going up against some real music pros.
But they weren't the least bit nervous about it.
Just then, the next competitor who went next was the beatboxer.
Now, this guy was really talented in his abilities.
His ability to mimic drum beats and rhythm using his mouth alone was just astounding.
He was somehow able to mimic many other instruments, too.
Gabi and Vivo had never seen a beatboxer with that good a talent.
With that in mind...Gabi and Vivo couldn't help but start thinking about how their act would compare to that.
Up next was an A Capella group.
This was a group of five individuals who used their individual voices to create a full musical experience, combining harmonies, melodies, and percussive sounds.
It was just...so impressive.
In fact, it was so impressive...Gabi and Vivo found it a little intimidating.
Vivo quietly said, "Wow. That is quite the vocal combination. Nothing like ours."
Finally, for the last rehearse of the day, it was Ricky and Lola.
Gabi quietly said as they went out, "Good luck out there."
Lola replied, "Thank you, sweetie. We just hope you like it."
When Ricky and Lola got onstage, salsa music started playing.
And the two danced their salsa routine.
And what a routine it was!
Vivo recognized what had to be the most complicated salsa moves.
He saw La Rueda, Titanic, 70 Complicado, Copa with Double Turn, El Dos, and even Sombrero Doble!
Gabi and Vivo were just in awe!
At the end of their dance, the couple received applause from everyone.
Even Gabi and Vivo.
Though Gabi then said, "I'm starting to wonder if we really were ready for a competition."
Vivo replied, "Uh...yeah. Might have to agree with you on that one."
