Solo Spotlight (Part 1)
It was a glorious night in Key West.
Most peaceful.
And most everyone in town was asleep.
Even at the usually crazy Hernández residence.
Rosa was in her bedroom, sleeping like the tired but happy mother she is.
And her little girl, Gabi, was peacefully sleeping in her own bedroom.
And her little kinkajou buddy, Vivo, was in his little suitcase bed next to her, with both eyes shut tight...
Until one of his eyes suddenly popped open.
In the darkened room, Vivo watched Gabi's peaceful slumber.
Her slow, rhythmic breathing was the only sound in the still night.
And that meant it was time to make his move.
Gently, Vivo slipped from his cozy case, his ears perked with excitement for what he he had planned for tonight.
Of course, he first had to slip out of his PJs, slip on his hat, bandana, and friendship bracelet before carefully slipping a teddy bear under the blanket in his bed in case Gabi woke up while he was gone.
As Gabi continued to dream, Vivo tiptoed out of the bedroom window, careful not to wake her.
Pretty soon, Vivo was out the window and walking down the sidewalk to another part of town.
His destination was the Scarlet Macaw, an enchanted hideaway known only to the pets of Key West.
By day, it was an ordinary restaurant and bar, but at night, it transformed into a magical haven for animals, run by Rico, a charismatic scarlet macaw.
Approaching the venue, Vivo located the hidden entrance concealed by a nondescript trash can.
He first checked to see if anyone else was around.
Once he saw the coast was clear, he gave the trash can a casual knock.
Not much later, the trash can slid over slightly and a voice was heard from the other side.
"Pass phrase?"
Vivo casually inquired from his side of the barrier.
"First flight's the longest?"
The voice responded, "But the view's the best..."
Vivo finished, "Under a scarlet wing."
That was the pass phrase; the trash can slid all the way over to reveal a hole in the building, allowing Vivo to enter the secret world of the Scarlet Macaw.
The first thing there was to see was the bouncer who allowed Vivo to enter; a fierce and serious-looking Doberman.
Though Vivo kindly tipped his hat to the dog, and the dog, in turn, gave a small salute of respect.
Afterwards, Vivo continued to admire how the place looked.
The interior was a symphony of sights, sounds, and scents.
Rich, warm lighting cast a golden glow over the eclectic furnishings.
Tables fashioned from driftwood were adorned with tropical flowers, while colorful tapestries draped the walls, depicting scenes of musical animals.
On a raised stage, a turtle played a smooth jazz tune on a saxophone, backed by a chorus of croaking frogs.
Their music enveloped the room, setting the tone for a night of relaxation and enjoyment.
Animals of all shapes and sizes mingled and danced, savoring the offerings from the bar.
Rico, the namesake scarlet macaw, supervised the acts as well as the servings of pet-friendly delicacies, such as dressed-up pet food, fruit, or veggies paired with milk, water, or even fruit-infused water.
Vivo's friends were nestled at the bar, each engaged in lively conversation.
Stella, Charlotte, Tiago, Roxie, Novella, and Vincent greeted Vivo with warm smiles.
He joined them on his own comfy barstool, in between his friends.
Not much later, tonight's bartender, a sheepdog named Mac, approached Vivo.
"Vivo, nice to see you again. The usual Macaw Melody Mix?"
Vivo replied casually, "You know it, Mac."
Mac already had it prepared; a bowl of water infused with tangy citrus fruits and sweet berries.
Mac said before sliding it down to Vivo, "Here you are, buddy."
Vivo caught the sliding bowl with ease.
"Muchas gracias."
Vivo then took a small sip from the bowl.
As Vivo began speaking with his friends, the cheerful banter flowed effortlessly.
Tiago exclaimed, "Vivo, amigo! You made it just in time for the main act. Isn't this place fantastic? Music, laughter, and the freedom to just be ourselves!"
Vivo said, grinning, "I couldn't agree more, Tiago. Performing in the Plaza is amazing, but there's something special about watching others shine on stage."
Charlotte chimed in, her voice bubbling with joy.
"Oh, I just love the way they dance together! It's like magic on stage!"
Vincent added, "Indeed. The rhythm, the harmony – it all blends together so perfectly."
Roxie nodded and said, "Nothing like a good beat to get the heart pumping. You should have seen the skateboard tricks I pulled off today, Vivo. I wish you were there!"
Novella, always the artist, remarked, "And speaking of blending, Vivo, that dance routine today was simply divine. It added such flair to your performance."
Vivo chuckled and said, "Well, it's all thanks to Gabi's creativity. We always find ways to make each show special."
They continued to chat, discussing their favorite performances, sharing tales of their daily adventures, and laughing at each other's jokes.
Then Stella leaned in, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
She said, "Speaking of performing, Vivo, have you ever considered taking the stage here? At the Scarlet Macaw?"
Vivo nearly choked on his drink, caught completely off guard by the question.
He sputtered, wiping his mouth, "Me? Perform here? Without Gabi? I don't really think I actually plan on doing that anytime soon."
His friends exchanged knowing glances, smiles turning into mischievous grins.
Roxie leaned forward and said, "Actually, we've been thinking about that, and we have a surprise for you."
Vivo's eyes widened, his heart pounding.
He said, "A surprise? What kind of surprise?"
His friends leaned in, their excitement palpable, ready to reveal the unexpected opportunity that awaited Vivo.
That was when Rico came onto the scene.
"There he is! The big showstopper for next week's show!"
When Vivo heard that, he had to stop himself from spitting out his water.
